The experiential meaning of emotions in young people’s reflective writing: The contexts of family and self

Mahmut ERDİL Opus uluslararası toplum araştırmaları dergisi, 2026, Vol. 23, Issue 2026, pp. 1-16 https://doi.org/10.26466/opusjsr.2013784

This study examined how university students related emotion labels to family relationships, social environments, and lived experiences in the elective course “Family Psychology and Education.” A classroom-based qualitative descriptive design was used to examine six writing activities conducted across five calendar weeks between May 20 and June 17, 2026, after ethics approval. Of 33 enrolled students, the 30 women who completed all activities formed the analytic sample; the all-women sample was not selected by gender. The dataset comprised 180 coded written forms. Meaningful text segments were coded inductively and semantically, developed into themes, and then interpreted through selected concepts of symbolic interactionism. Three themes addressed the distance between emotion labels and experiential meaning; emotions within loss, injustice, belonging, and autonomy; and connections among emotion, self, and relational roles. In final reflections, students described seeing more clearly how emotions took shape in everyday life, family relationships, and social experience. These statements were analyzed as accounts of perceived learning. Because the activities used different prompts, the study identifies contextual patterns of written meaning-making rather than a causal course effect or measured change.

Halise Arslan Şekkeli; Aynur Feyzioğlu İstanbul Gelişim Üniversitesi Sosyal Bilimler Dergisi, 2026, Issue Advanced Online Publ, pp. 591-602 https://doi.org/10.17336/igusbd.1695369

Aim: This study explores the interaction between emotion regulation (ER) processes, adult attachment styles, and interpersonal relationship styles. The primary aim is to identify key determinants of interpersonal relationship styles by examining how ER strategies and difficulties shape social interactions in combination with attachment patterns.Method: The sample consists of 420 adults between 18 and 65 recruited using a snowball sampling. Participants were given several self-report questionnaires, including the Demographic Information Form, ER Questionnaire (ERQ), Difficulties in ER Scale-Short Form (DERS-16), Experiences in Close Relationships Scale-Revised (ECR-R), and Interpersonal Relationships Scale (IRS). The relationships between the continuous variables of the study were evaluated by Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient; the predictor variables were evaluated by Multiple Linear Regression Analysis. Results: The findings indicate significant correlations between ER strategies, ER difficulties, attachment styles, and interpersonal relationship styles. Specifically, engagement in cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression and difficulties with impulse control and emotional clarity emerged as important predictors of interpersonal relationship styles. Individuals with higher scores on emotional clarity and adaptive regulation strategies tended to engage in more supportive and constructive interpersonal interactions. In contrast, difficulties in managing emotions were associated with higher levels of conflict-oriented inhibitory relational tendencies. Additionally, attachment styles played an important role; anxious and avoidant attachment scores were significantly correlated negative interpersonal tendencies. Conclusion: By emphasizing the dynamic interaction between emotional processes and attachment experiences in shaping social dynamics, these findings offer valuable insights for psychological interventions to improve ER skills and build healthier relationships in adulthood.

Social interaction requires the integration of information about self, other, and shared context. One of the proposed mechanisms supporting this coordination is interbrain synchrony – correlated neural activity between interacting individuals – yet its role in shaping social behavior remains unresolved. Here, we show that theta band synchrony in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) is closely linked to social interaction in mice and often precedes its onset. In male Shank2 mutant mice, a genetic model of social dysfunction, mPFC interbrain synchrony was diminished, along with a reduced population of mPFC neurons encoding multiple dimensions of social information. Optogenetic entrainment of theta synchrony was accompanied by increased interbrain coupling and social interaction in male Shank2-/- and Tbr1+/K228E mutant mice, two well-established genetic models of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). These findings identify prefrontal theta synchrony as a neural substrate that supports social behavior and provide a framework for understanding how coordinated neural activity across brains contributes to social interaction. Brain rhythms of interacting mice become synchronized, but this coordination is reduced in mouse models of autism. Here the authors show that theta-frequency stimulation is accompanied by increased interbrain synchrony and social interaction.
