The influence of attachment style and fear of intimacy in early adulthood in romantic relationships

R. Arum Sekar Tanjung; Nandy Agustin Syakarofath Cognicia, 2026, Vol. 14, Issue 2, pp. 137-143 https://doi.org/10.22219/cognicia.v14i2.44076

This study examined the influence of attachment style on fear of intimacy among emerging adults aged 18–25 years. A quantitative approach involved 152 participants who were currently or had previously been in romantic relationships, recruited through convenience sampling. Data were collected using the Experiences in Close Relationships–Revised (ECR-R) and Fear of Intimacy Scale (FIS). Linear regression analysis showed that insecure attachment significantly predicted fear of intimacy (β = 0.570, p < .001). Both attachment avoidance (β = 0.432, p < .001) and attachment anxiety (β = 0.368, p < .001) were significant predictors, with avoidance showing a stronger association. These findings suggest that discomfort with emotional closeness and anxiety in romantic relationships are associated with greater fear of intimacy. The results highlight the potential value of psychological interventions that support emerging adults in developing safer and healthier romantic relationships.

Specific Aspects of Dental Hygienists' Work with Patients with Eating Disorders

Aušra, Rudžianskienė; Jovita Beržinė; Viktorija Paulauskienė; Monika Balčytienė; Greta Staponkute International Journal of Innovative Research in Multidisciplinary Education, 2026, Vol. 05, Issue 10 https://doi.org/10.58806/ijirme.2026.v5i10n11

Eating disorders are complex mental health conditions that typically develop during adolescence or early adulthood and may have a significant adverse impact on both physical and mental health. The main types of eating disorders include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge-eating disorder, all of which are characterized by altered eating behaviours and associated health problems (Robatto et al., 2024). Eating disorders may be associated with a range of psychological and somatic complications, including depression, anxiety, cardiovascular and endocrine disorders, as well as an increased risk of mortality (Mushtaq et al., 2023). The effects of these disorders may also manifest in the oral cavity. Therefore, in dental hygiene practice, particular importance should be placed on the early recognition of potential oral health changes, individualized assessment of the patient’s oral health status, and the selection of appropriate preventive measures. Dental hygienists may play an important role not only in the prevention of oral diseases but also in the early recognition of oral manifestations potentially associated with eating disorders and in encouraging patients to seek timely multidisciplinary professional care.

The Role of Childhood Traumatic Experiences in Cognitive Flexibility During Early Adulthood

Tsania Nadhira; Satwika Rahapsari; Kwartarini Wahyu Yuniarti Gadjah Mada Journal of Psychology (GamaJoP), 2026, Vol. 12, Issue 2, pp. 162 https://doi.org/10.22146/gamajop.105406

Cognitive flexibility enables individuals to navigate unpredictable situations and rapid changes. Because the prefrontal cortex governs both cognitive flexibility and emotional input, lifetime traumatic experiences may influence its development. Despite this, research examining the impact of childhood trauma on cognitive flexibility in early adulthood remains limited. This study investigates the relationship using a sequential explanatory approach. A total of 275 undergraduate and diploma students (ages 18–25) from Gadjah Mada University completed the Adverse Childhood Experiences-International Questionnaire (ACE-IQ) and the Cognitive Flexibility Scale (CFS). Simple linear regression and thematic analysis indicated that childhood trauma predicts cognitive flexibility in early adulthood. These findings highlight the importance of understanding the long-term impact of childhood trauma on cognitive adaptability, which may inform interventions to enhance resilience in early adulthood. Future research should consider developmental timing, sociocultural environment, education, socioeconomic status, and spirituality, as well as experimental performance measures.

The secondary school transition as a turning point for internalizing symptoms: Trajectories, correlates, and early adulthood outcomes

Heather L. Brittain; Tracy Vaillancourt Development and Psychopathology, 2026, pp. 1-13 https://doi.org/10.1017/s095457942610203x

Abstract Internalizing disorders are the most common adolescent mental disorders. Using complementary variable-centered and person-centered approaches, we examined whether internalizing symptoms across eight years of adolescence (Grades 5–12) followed a continuous developmental trend or were disrupted by the transition to secondary school, and if different subgroups followed different pathways. Participants were 701 Canadian youth (52.9% girls; 75.9% white). Annual self-reported internalizing symptoms (ages 11–18) were examined using piecewise latent growth curve analysis (LGCM), revealing significant curve and level discontinuity at the transition, with distinct developmental phases in elementary and secondary school. Girls, youth with lower household income, and those with higher bullying victimization and lower social support showed elevated symptoms and/or steeper growth. An LGCM yielded four classes: Low (51.8%), Moderate (32.5%), Increasing (10.6%), and Declining (5.1%). The Declining and Moderate classes had comparable risk for early adulthood outcomes, demonstrating equifinality. Although beginning with similar levels, the Increasing class was at elevated risk compared to the Moderate class, demonstrating multifinality. Findings underscore that the secondary school transition can be viewed as a transition-linked turning point for a subset of adolescents, with implications for targeted screening and intervention beginning in elementary school.

The Effect of Covert Narcissism on Relationship Addiction in Early Adulthood: The Double Mediating Effects of Distress Tolerance and Emotion Dysregulation

Hyo Jin Kim; Jong-Nam Kim Korean Journal of Stress Research, 2026, Vol. 34, Issue 3, pp. 125-134 https://doi.org/10.17547/kjsr.2026.34.3.125

Background: This study examined the pathway through which covert narcissism leads to relationship addiction through distress tolerance and emotion dysregulation in early adulthood. Methods: Data were collected from 394 Korean adults aged 18–39 years who were recruited using online convenience sampling. Participants completed measures of covert narcissism, distress tolerance, emotion dysregulation, and relationship addiction. The PROCESS macro was used for data analysis. Results: Both distress tolerance and emotion dysregulation partially mediated the relationship between covert narcissism and relationship addiction. Their double mediating effect was also significant, and the direct effect of covert narcissism on relationship addiction remained significant. This pattern remained when gender was included as a covariate. Conclusions: Individuals with high covert narcissism are sensitive to negative evaluations and easily hurt, thereby lowering their capacity to tolerate distress and intensifying difficulties in emotion regulation. Subsequently, they attempt to fulfil their unmet needs through others and become excessively absorbed in relationships. Therefore, interventions may be more effective when self-compassion-based approaches are used first to strengthen distress tolerance, followed by emotion regulation skills training, such as dialectical behavior therapy.
