Healthcare workers (HCWs) face elevated risk for burnout and stress-related disorders, yet conventional self-report assessments are limited by professional stigma and underreporting. We evaluated whether multimodal computational analysis of brief, remotely collected stress narratives could distinguish longitudinal stress profiles. In a prospective six-week cohort study, N = 750 HCWs were invited to provide weekly naturalistic narratives describing recent stressful experiences and repeated measures of anxiety, depression, burnout, and subjective distress. Among 553 participants with sufficient repeated self-report data, multivariate longitudinal clustering identified two distinct profiles: Resilient ( n = 295) and Vulnerable ( n = 258). Linguistic, acoustic, and facial expression embeddings were extracted from the recordings and integrated using a hierarchical multimodal transformer. In a held-out test set, the model achieved an AUROC of 0.75, outperforming unimodal (linguistic embeddings; AUROC = 0.63) and bimodal (linguistic + acoustic; AUROC = 0.70) configurations. These findings provide proof of concept that multimodal embeddings extracted from brief stress narratives are associated with occupational stress profiles, potentially complementing traditional assessment methods and informing targeted prevention strategies.

Effects of Interpersonal Traumatic Experiences and Interpersonal Problems on Psychological Symptoms among College Students: Moderated Mediating Effect of Expressive Flexibility

Hajin Lim; Boyoung Kim Korean Journal of Stress Research, 2026, Vol. 34, Issue 3, pp. 165-174 https://doi.org/10.17547/kjsr.2026.34.3.165

Background: This study examined whether interpersonal problems mediated the relationship between subjective distress from interpersonal trauma and psychological symptoms, and whether emotional expression flexibility moderated this indirect effect. Methods: Self-reported measures were completed by 241 college students with interpersonal trauma experiences. Data were analyzed using correlation, mediation, and moderated mediation analyses. PROCESS Macro for SPSS was used. Results: Interpersonal problems partially mediated the relationship between interpersonal trauma-related distress and psychological symptoms. Furthermore, emotional expression enhancement significantly moderated the association between interpersonal trauma-related distress and problems; conversely, emotional expression suppression did not. The indirect effect through interpersonal problems was significant only at low and average levels of emotional expression enhancement. Conclusions: Emotional expression enhancement may buffer the negative effects of interpersonal trauma on interpersonal problems and psychological symptoms. These findings suggest that interventions for enhancing context-appropriate emotional expression may be useful for college students with interpersonal trauma experiences.
