Negotiating expectation–reality mismatches during university transition: A qualitative study of first-year students in South Africa

Molokwane Revelation Matthews Serathi; Oluwatoyin Ayodele Ajani International Journal of Studies in Psychology, 2026, Vol. 6, Issue 3, pp. 88-96 https://doi.org/10.66434/ijspsy.v6i3.612

The transition from secondary school to higher education is a critical period that shapes students' academic engagement, social integration, and persistence. Despite increased access to higher education in South Africa, many first-year students enter university with expectations that differ substantially from their subsequent experiences, creating adjustment challenges. Guided by Tinto's Theory of Student Integration and Educational Transition Theory, this study explored first-year students' expectations. It examined how students perceived and experienced mismatches between these expectations and the realities of university life. The study adopted an interpretivist qualitative research paradigm and an exploratory descriptive design. Data were collected through three focus group discussions with 21 purposively selected first-year students at a comprehensive university in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. They were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis. The findings revealed an expectation–reality mismatch in three areas: social integration and peer relationships, course selection and academic guidance, and academic workload alongside self-directed learning demands. Participants who identified as first-generation students described experiencing additional transition difficulties, which they associated with limited social and cultural capital, inadequate career guidance, and low digital literacy. Participants also associated persistent socioeconomic inequality with these difficulties. The study concludes that expectation–reality mismatch is a psychologically meaningful mechanism through which structural inequality translates into experiences of uncertainty, diminished belonging, and academic disengagement during the first year. Strengthened orientation, mentoring, academic advising, and digital literacy support are recommended to improve student adjustment, engagement, and retention.

Preservice teachers’ interpretations of culturally responsive teaching in Hong Kong: beyond benevolent integrationism

Ying Ji; Jan Christian C. Gube Pedagogy Culture and Society, 2026, pp. 1-18 https://doi.org/10.1080/14681366.2026.2751522

This study investigates how preservice teachers in Hong Kong interpret culturally responsive teaching (CRT) and what conditions might shape their interpretations. The findings indicate preservice teachers’ orientation towards benevolent integrationism in interpreting CRT, featured by a primary focus on linguistic mediation between English and Cantonese and a strong ethos of benevolent interpersonal care by teachers to facilitate ethnic minority students’ integration in mainstream classrooms and society. The underlying values of this orientation resonate with Confucian discourses of care, harmony, benevolence and relationality noted in international research on education in Chinese contexts. However, in reference to the Western-based theorisation of CRT, preservice teachers’ interpretations represent a synthesis of the celebratory and integrationist stances, while the critical, equity-oriented stance remains largely absent. Therefore, we argue that recourse to Confucian discourses in education for ethnic minority students risks obscuring or perpetuating systemic inequalities and discuss how teacher education and institutional efforts might extend the orientation of benevolent integrationism among preservice teachers towards critical engagement with inequality. Overall, the findings demonstrate how global educational paradigms, such as CRT, are interpreted in specific socio-cultural contexts and show how local interpretations and socio-cultural contexts can serve as foundations for a more equitable education for ethnic minorities.

Special Issue Introduction: Expanding Qualitative Inquiry on Student Loan Debt

Daniel Collier; Christopher Mariscano Higher Education Politics & Economics, 2026, Vol. 12, Issue 2 https://doi.org/10.32674/7feg9d41

This special issue introduction argues that qualitative inquiry is essential for understanding student loan debt beyond the scale and distributional patterns documented in quantitative research. Drawing on eight contributing papers, the authors demonstrate that borrowing is a lived, emotional, and evolving experience shaped by identity, mental health, and shifting life circumstances. The collection examines borrower decision-making that resists rational economic models, the embedded perspectives of higher education practitioners who advise students while managing their own debt, structural inequalities that constrain choice, and the confusion produced by a complex loan system. Together, these studies call for a methodological shift toward centering lived experience in debt research and policy.
