The transition from early childhood education to kindergarten is a critical developmental period for all children, and one that can be particularly demanding for those with special educational needs (SEN). This article presents findings from a mixed methods case study conducted in two private schools in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. This study investigates how parental attitudes, teacher preparedness, communication gaps, and structural barriers influence school transitions. Findings reveal a consistent divergence in perspective: parents generally regarded transition difficulties as normal and time-limited, whereas teachers identified sustained, complex challenges related to emotional regulation, large class sizes, limited specialist training, and insufficient information about incoming children. Parental reluctance to accept a formal diagnosis was viewed as a significant barrier in both schools. Given the small and unevenly distributed sample, reported divergences are viewed as illustrative rather than generalisable. The study contributes to a growing body of research evidence on inclusive educational transitions in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) context. Its originality lies in comparing perspectives within an under-researched educational and cultural context, revealing differences in how parents and teachers perceive transition difficulties. This context-specific evidence has implications for educational policy and practice.
Learners enter Further Education (FE) for diverse reasons, and previous experiences of educational transitions influence how they approach new transitions. FE offers fresh opportunities for learners in providing both vocational and academic pathways. Understanding the transition experiences of learners is critical in ensuring the engagement and retention of learners. By listening to the voices of learners from three FE settings in South Wales who had considered withdrawing during their first year, this study offers new insights into what supports continued participation and what challenges learners face, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds. Findings suggest that early relationships with staff play a crucial role in helping learners settle into FE. Over time, friendships and meaningful engagement with the course become key factors in learners’ decisions to remain. This study therefore emphasises the need for FE settings to prioritise early transitions support and to recognise the ongoing importance of social connections and course relevance in sustaining learner engagement.
ABSTRACT Objective To examine how transnational family life and parent–child co‐agency shape educational decisions among Ukrainian refugee children in Poland. Background Since Russia's full‐scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, many Ukrainian families have relocated to Poland, where children navigate educational transitions amid legal, emotional, and educational uncertainty. Little is known about how these decisions are negotiated within transnational families whose members may remain dispersed across borders. Methods This qualitative study draws on interviews with 40 refugee children in the final grades of Polish primary school and 40 parents, conducted as part of the EduMAP research project. Results Parent–child co‐agency was dynamic and often asymmetrical, which is shown within two aspects: gendered parental asymmetry and parent–child asymmetry. Conclusions Educational transitions emerged as negotiated processes of agency and co‐agency within transnational family networks, rather than exclusively parental or child‐led decisions. Implications Schools should support refugee children and parents by providing guidance on recruitment procedures and school options. Family‐oriented support may strengthen children's participation while reducing excessive responsibility and helping mitigate educational inequalities.
Access to post-compulsory education remains highly unequal for socioeconomically vulnerable students. This qualitative case study examines the factors enabling successful educational transitions in a school located in one of Spain's most disadvantaged communities. Through semi-structured interviews with five students from Roma and migrant backgrounds who progressed to post-compulsory education, thematic analysis identified key interconnected success factors. These include a school culture of high expectations, personalised guidance, dialogic practices, extended learning opportunities, strong family-community engagement, and educational role models. Together, these elements transformed student aspirations. The findings offer insights into possible enabling factors, suggesting that integrated, community-based educational approaches may support equitable access to post-compulsory education in highly disadvantaged contexts.
