Background: Young adults' extensive use of smartphones has resulted in several health concerns and one of which is Text Neck Syndrome. Prolonged neck flexion during smartphone use can lead to neck pain, disability and functional limitations. The study focused on determining the prevalence and knowledge regarding Text Neck Syndrome and identify predicting factors associated with the condition. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out among 240 undergraduate students selected using convenience method of sampling from four colleges in East Khasi Hills, Meghalaya. A standardized questionnaire with questions on demographics, participant behaviour and understanding of text neck syndrome was used to gather data. Two standardized tools neck disability index and the smartphone addiction scale-short version were used with prior permission to assess neck disability and smartphone addiction.8,9 Results: The results demonstrated that, prevalence of Text Neck Syndrome among the participants discovered to be 35.8% (95% CI:29.8%–42.3%) and 41.0% participants had smartphone addiction. Majority (71.7%) participants had adequate knowledge regarding Text Neck Syndrome and smartphone addiction was identified as a significant independent predictor of Text Neck Syndrome, with 2.2 times higher odds of developing the condition. Additionally, there was a significant positive correlation found between smartphone addiction and neck disability. Conclusions: Text Neck Syndrome is a prevalent health issue among undergraduate students in Meghalaya, affecting more than one-third of the study population. Although most of the participants had adequate knowledge regarding text neck syndrome, the occurrence of the syndrome suggests the need of targeted educational, ergonomic and behavioural interventions among young adults.
Smartphone use during face-to-face interaction may be experienced as a disruption of relational presence. This cross-sectional study examined whether perceived partner phubbing (PPP) was associated with relationship satisfaction directly and indirectly through an overall attachment-related behavior score. Participants were 396 unmarried and noncohabiting adults in Türkiye who owned a smartphone and had been in a romantic relationship for at least six months (331 women, 64 men, and one other; mean age = 23.20 years). Participants completed the Partner Phubbing Scale, the Couples Satisfaction Index, and the Brief Accessibility, Responsiveness, and Engagement Scale. Correlational and bootstrapped indirect-effect analyses were conducted. PPP was negatively associated with relationship satisfaction and attachment-related behaviors, whereas attachment-related behaviors were strongly and positively associated with relationship satisfaction. A significant indirect association emerged through the overall attachment-related behavior score, while the direct association remained significant. The findings suggest that perceived phone-related inattention may be linked to relationship evaluations partly through a broader pattern of attachment-related behaviors involving perceptions of both self and partner behavior. Longitudinal, dyadic research is needed to establish temporal and causal ordering.
This study investigates children’s understandings of smartphones and their usage configurations in the context of emerging global policies aimed at regulating young people’s smartphone use. Drawing on China’s early implementation of similar regulatory initiatives, we conducted in-depth interviews with children to explore how they conceptualize smartphones in their everyday lives. Coding analysis reveals that children possess differentiated concepts of smartphones. These include “everyday concepts” derived from children’s lived experiences and what this study analytically terms “scientific concepts,” referring to more structured, school-mediated, or institutionally transmitted discourses about smartphone structures, mechanisms, and risks. Building on these findings, the study employs the cognitive–affective–conative (CAC) framework to analyze children’s smartphone usage tendencies, highlighting the crucial role of emotional experience in shaping usage intentions. The analysis further explores how children reinterpret the meaning of “playing with smartphones.” These findings provide insights into the development of targeted media education interventions that build on children’s existing understandings while addressing potential misconceptions. This study situates children’s cognition of smartphones within the global research framework on children’s digital rights, offering empirical insights into how children engage with digital technologies as meaning-makers.
