Objective: This study investigates the common characteristics of countries with high happiness index scores using a cluster analysis of 20 nations. Design: The study is an ecological study where the unit of observation is the population in a country. Setting: Data were drawn from the World Happiness Report, World Bank, WHO, and World Population Review (2023–2025). Main outcome measures: The study focused on five variables: social support, GDP per capita, healthy life expectancy, crude death rate, and health expenditure. Results: Results revealed that countries in higher-performing clusters exhibited consistently strong social support systems, moderate to high GDP per capita, high healthy life expectancy, moderate crude death rates, and substantial public health spending. Among these factors, social support emerged as the most influential determinant, aligning with recent literature emphasizing the psychological and societal benefits of strong interpersonal networks. GDP alone was not a sufficient predictor of happiness; countries with high economic output but lower investment in health and social infrastructure ranked lower in overall well-being. Conclusions: This study demonstrates that countries with high happiness cannot be characterized by economic prosperity alone. The cluster analysis showed that high happiness may coexist with different combinations of economic, social, and health conditions. The study therefore characterizes countries with high Happiness Index scores as heterogeneous rather than uniform.
The WHO Adolescent Well-being Framework identifies agency and resilience as a central domain of adolescent well-being, yet its expression from a health promotion perspective remains insufficiently understood. Although previous research has often focused on specific behaviours or isolated factors, less attention has been given to how interconnected personal and relational resources coexist as patterns reflecting the WHO domain of agency and resilience. This study explored such patterns among young Swedish persons aged 15–18 years and examined gender differences across these patterns. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 419 students in Swedish upper secondary schools. Agency and resilience were operationalised through measures of salutogenic health, positive youth development (PYD), playfulness, goal orientation, and physical activity. A person-oriented cluster analysis was used to identify patterns of interconnected resources, and gender differences between patterns. Three distinct resource patterns were identified: a low-resource group (26%), a high-resource group (28%), and an asymmetric-resource group (47%), characterised by relatively favourable intrapersonal resources alongside lower relational PYD resources. Girls were significantly overrepresented in both the low-resource and asymmetric-resource groups. Together, these findings suggest that young persons with seemingly favourable individual resources may nevertheless exhibit underlying vulnerabilities when resources are considered as interconnected patterns rather than isolated characteristics. This perspective contributes to the empirical understanding of the WHO domain of agency and resilience and may inform person-centred, relational approaches to promoting young persons’ well-being.
Creativity is a core competency within Kenya’s Competency-Based Education framework, and Integrated Science offers opportunities for learners to investigate, collaborate, experiment, and apply scientific knowledge. However, limited context-specific evidence exists on how teachers combine instructional strategies to foster creativity in Junior School Integrated Science. This study assessed variations in teachers’ combined use of inquiry-based, collaborative, experiential and hands-on, and technology-enhanced strategies in public Junior Schools in Ainabkoi Sub-County, Uasin Gishu County, Kenya. Guided by Piaget’s Cognitive Constructivist Theory, it adopted a pragmatic worldview and convergent parallel mixed-methods design. Questionnaires were completed by 81 Integrated Science teachers, and semi-structured interviews were conducted with 15 Lead Integrated Science Teachers. Quantitative data were analysed using descriptive statistics and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA), while qualitative data underwent thematic analysis. Collaborative learning recorded the highest use (M = 4.06, SD = 0.65), followed by inquiry-based learning (M = 3.94, SD = 0.66), experiential/hands-on learning (M = 3.54, SD = 0.53), and technology-enhanced instruction (M = 2.92, SD = 0.37). HCA yielded three exploratory profiles distinguished by relative emphasis on technology, inquiry and experiential learning, and collaboration. Interviews indicated that teachers adapted strategy combinations to lesson demands, resources, time, class size, and preparation requirements. The findings show variation in teachers’ reported practices, supporting differentiated professional development and improved access to practical and digital resources. Learner creativity was not directly measured.
This study examines the status of science identity of physics among middle school students, adopting a mixed-methods approach combining survey data and qualitative interviews, thereby addressing a gap in research on science identity in physics within the transitional context from integrated to discipline-specific curricula in early middle school. Quantitative analyses, including descriptive statistics, cluster analysis, correlation analysis, t-tests, and MANOVA, examined students’ science identity status, patterns, and gender differences. Qualitative interviews were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis to explore underlying factors. The findings indicate that students’ science identity is moderately positive overall but characterized by an internal imbalance. While interest in science classes emerges as the strongest dimension, science role recognition remains notably weak, revealing an interest–recognition gap. A substantial proportion of students cluster within a neutral identity category, suggesting that the transition from integrated science to subject-based curricula represents a critical and malleable stage in identity development. Gender differences are significant across all dimensions of science identity and become more pronounced at higher grade levels, particularly in learning competence, practical performance, and career interest. Qualitative evidence suggests that these patterns may be associated with increasing academic demands following the transition to discipline-specific curricula, shifts in evaluation approaches, and internalized gender stereotypes. Additionally, limited peer discourse, low perceived proximity to the scientist role, and insufficient exposure to authentic scientific practices further constrain identity formation. Teacher recognition is a critical factor, with female students showing heightened sensitivity to it.
Stigmatisation can undermine participation, belonging and well-being in higher education. This study examined how students represent stigmatisation and connect it to diversity, inclusion and perceived institutional responsibility. Grounded in social representations theory, it used a cross-sectional qualitative textual design. A non-probabilistic snowball sample of 519 students from one Spanish university completed an online free-association task based on the Grid Elaboration Method, providing four words and brief explanations in response to “stigmatisation”. Spanish-language responses were analysed in IRaMuTeQ using similarity analysis and descending hierarchical cluster analysis (Reinert method). Seven classes formed two broader branches. The first constructed stigmatisation as categorisation and discrimination affecting LGBTQ+ people, migrants, and people with mental health conditions or functional diversity, with perceived consequences including emotional suffering and academic harm. The second connected stigmatisation to unmet support needs, rigid assessment practices and insufficient institutional responsiveness. By mapping spontaneous associations across multiple forms of difference, the study shows how social marking, psychosocial and educational consequences, and perceived institutional responsibility are organised within a shared representational field. The findings suggest that responses to stigmatisation may benefit from combining awareness-raising with attention to support provision, pedagogical and assessment practices, staff preparation, and communication about inclusion initiatives.
Introduction The rapid integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into education requires teachers to develop new competencies and manage their own learning. While research has examined teachers’ AI attitudes, acceptance, and literacy, less is known about how they regulate their learning in AI contexts. This study examined teachers’ self-regulated learning (SRL) profiles and their associations with demographic characteristics and AI-related experience. Methods In a descriptive survey, 213 in-service teachers completed the Artificial Intelligence Self-Regulated Learning Scale for Teachers (AI-SRLS). Two-Step Cluster Analysis was conducted using five dimensions: task planning, self-monitoring, help seeking, institutional support, and self-evaluation. Results Two profiles emerged: High Strategic Learners, who scored consistently higher across all five dimensions, and Limited Strategy Users, who reported comparatively lower strategy use. Profile membership was significantly associated with prior AI experience and AI-related training. Gender, age, and professional experience did not significantly differentiate the profiles. Discussion Teachers’ AI-related SRL strategies co-occur in distinct profiles, supporting a differentiated approach to professional development. Teachers with limited strategy use may benefit from structured guidance, scaffolded AI learning opportunities, and stronger institutional support, while highly strategic learners may benefit from more autonomous and advanced learning opportunities.
In recent years, psychological strain among young people has increased worldwide due to numerous social crises. School and classroom performance requirements are primary sources of stress for students. Classroom stress emerges when the demands of a teaching situation surpass personal resources, such as self-efficacy beliefs (SEB). Scientific inquiry-based activities, including experiments or modeling, pose a significant challenge in science lessons because students have limited resources in this area, even by the end of lower secondary school. Consequently, an elevated stress level is anticipated in such situations. This exploratory study examined secondary school students’ heart rate variability (n = 86 valid data sets), an indicator of physiological stress, during inquiry-based and non-inquiry-based (communication) situations in science lessons. Moreover, a hierarchical cluster analysis was conducted to investigate whether stress levels differed as a function of individual dispositions that encompassed both stress levels and scientific SEBs. Overall, no significantly elevated stress level was observed during inquiry-based situations. Nevertheless, three types of students with different physiological stress responses were identified, suggesting that individual dispositions are pivotal in guiding personalized stress prevention in science lessons.
Objectives Among people seeking sports-specific musculoskeletal specialty care we sought to determine 1) whether level of athletic identity mediates or moderates the relationship between thoughts and feelings and levels of capability and pain intensity, and 2) whether levels of pain intensity and capability differ among statistical groupings based on age and mindsets including athletic identity. Methods Adult patients seeing a sports medicine specialist (n = 135) completed measures of levels of capability, pain intensity, thoughts and feelings regarding sensation, and identification as an athlete. We planned mediation/moderation analysis. When that was not feasible, weadded an unplanned, exploratory cluster analysis of mindset factors. Results The lack of correlation between athletic identity and levels of capability and pain intensity precluded moderation/mediation analysis. An exploratory cluster analysis suggested that relatively younger people who identify as athletes and middle-aged people with somewhat greater feelings of distress may have greater pain intensity on average. Conclusions The finding that feelings of distress, independent of athletic identity, are associated with greater pain intensity and incapability is consistent with evidence that mindsets are a key aspect of musculoskeletal health, perhaps independent of specific identities.
Depression represents a complex, multifactorial disorder influenced by the interplay of biological, behavioral, and social determinants. While extensive health surveys, including the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), gather comprehensive multidomain data, existing studies tend to analyze these domains independently, overlooking the potential to identify integrated, data-driven patterns of depression risk. We have developed SYNERGY-VAE, an interpretable and multimodal deep learning framework that is designed to identify latent health subgroups and facilitate the transparent prediction of depression risk, utilizing NHANES-derived multimodal data from a large analytic cohort that spans five distinct domains from 2005 to 2018. SYNERGY-VAE utilizes a variational autoencoder to learn a shared latent representation derived from five modalities of NHANES, specifically demographic, dietary, examination, laboratory, and questionnaire data. Clustering within this latent space revealed subpopulations exhibiting distinct health signatures. To enhance interpretability, we triangulated insights utilizing encoder weights, standardized mean differences, and permutation feature importance (PFI). Machine learning classifiers were trained within each cluster employing the top 30 PFI-ranked features, with performance evaluated through the receiver operating characteristic area under the curve (AUC) in a 70/30 train-test split. Three latent clusters emerged, each demonstrating markedly different observed prevalence rates of depression within the analytic sample, ranging from 6.8% to 10.9%. Cluster-specific models consistently surpassed pooled models in performance, with the highest predictive accuracy identified in Cluster 2 utilizing XGBoost (AUC = 0.839, 95% CI:0.804–0.874). The importance of features varied across clusters, indicating unique depression risk profiles specific to each subgroup. SYNERGY-VAE demonstrates the power of generative, explainable deep learning for the identification of latent health phenotypes, thereby furthering the objectives of precision mental health. By integrating high-dimensional, multimodal data and facilitating transparent subgroup discovery, our model may inform future stratified and context-aware screening research and contribute to precision psychiatry-oriented research in large health survey datasets.
