Evolution of the educational system and micro-psychological mechanisms: a comparative study of academic motivation and engagement in Shanghai, China and Kazakhstan

Zhan Zhou; Aigul Alchimbayeva; Xiaogang Jin Frontiers in Psychology, 2026, Vol. 17, pp. 2005404 https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2026.2005404

Introduction As noted in successive OECD assessment reports, global education systems are shifting from standardized assessments toward prioritizing students’ psychological wellbeing and autonomous agency. However, cross-cultural quantitative evidence regarding how these macro-policy transformations relate to students’ micro-psychological perceptions and academic behaviors remains limited. Methods Utilizing a cross-sectional survey, this study analyzed data from 1,309 university students in Shanghai, China, and Kazakhstan. Multi-Group Confirmatory Factor Analysis and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) were employed to examine the structural associations and measurement invariance among Perceived Educational Transformation (PET), Intrinsic Motivation (IM), and Learning Engagement (LE). Results The three-factor model demonstrated strict measurement invariance across both samples. SEM findings indicated that IM partially mediated a significant indirect associative mechanism the positive structural relationship between PET and LE (indirect effect = 0.098, 95% CI [0.076, 0.122]). This statistical mediating pathway was consistent across both cohorts, showing only trivial inter-group differences (all parameter Δ p > 0.05). Baseline comparisons revealed the Shanghai sample reported higher PET, yet IM and LE levels exhibited no significant quantitative differences between the two groups (Cohen’s d < 0.10). Discussion Higher perceptions of educational transformation do not linearly correspond to enhanced motivation, potentially constrained by unobserved systemic evaluation pressures. The findings suggest that autonomy-supportive educational environments are consistently associated with higher Intrinsic Motivation and academic engagement, regardless of differentiated macro-educational contexts. However, due to the cross-sectional design, these findings represent structural associations rather than directional causality.

From 1931 to 1945, Japanese wartime photography was determined by a censorship system that shaped what could and could not be seen. The survival of the Mainichi Shimbun’s wartime negatives, hidden in an underground temple vault at the end of the war despite official orders to destroy them, offers rare material traces of this censorship process. This article examines how claims about photographic evidence framed as authenticity, veracity, and proof have been mobilized in debates over Japanese wartime imagery by analyzing two highly contested images from 1937 published in the Mainichi newspaper and the international press: H.S. Wong’s widely circulated “Bloody Saturday” photograph of a wounded infant in Shanghai and Satō Shinju’s portrait of two officers celebrated in the fabricated “Hundred-Man Killing Contest.” Both illuminate instances of how wartime photographs function simultaneously as representations of fact, propaganda, and sites of denial. While the photograph of an injured baby in Shanghai became well known internationally, prompting fierce disputes over its representation of the event, the “Killing Contest” photograph represented a staged domestic fiction that made it possible to imagine a violence not visible in the mass press due to censorship. Publications and investigative reporting in the 1970s reignited debates over these images, exposing how photography continues to structure memory, forgetting, and denial of Japanese atrocities. By interrogating how censorship, mediation, and circulation shaped these photographs’ afterlives, this article frames them as unstable yet indispensable tools for reckoning with the past.

Inclusive education competency in early childhood: the mediating role of self-development in achieving sustainable development goal 4

This study reconceptualizes Inclusive Education Competency (IEC) in early childhood as a product of activation rather than accumulation. We argue that Inclusive Education Disposition (IED) and Inclusive Education Knowledge (IEK) are necessary but insufficient conditions for inclusive practice; Self-Development (SD)—defined here as disciplined cycles of goal setting, monitoring, help-seeking, and reflection—functions as the proximal mechanism through which what teachers value and know is translated into what they consistently do in classrooms. Using a cross-sectional survey of in-service preschool teachers in Shanghai ( N = 355), we tested this activation framework through covariance-based structural equation modeling (CB-SEM) with 5,000-resample bootstrap inference. Reliability and convergent validity were strong, although SD–IEC discriminant validity was borderline under the item-level HTMT criterion (0.904); the structural model demonstrated adequate fit. SD was the strongest predictor of IEC ( β = 0.743, p < 0.001), while IED and IEK retained modest direct effects and significant indirect effects via SD, supporting partial mediation. The model explained 68.7% of the variance in SD and 86.2% of the variance in IEC. These findings shift the explanation of inclusive competency from static attributes to dynamic processes of professional change. In practical terms, systems pursuing Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG4)—that is, inclusive and equitable quality education for all—should institutionalize routines that support teacher self-development, including protected collaborative planning time, goal-based coaching, short plan–do–study–act cycles, peer observation, and formative evidence use. The study offers an empirically supported four-construct framework and practical implications for policy, leadership, and professional learning design.
