Rethinking the Criminology Curriculum

Daniel Williams International Journal of Criminology and Policing Education, 2026, Vol. 1 https://doi.org/10.70386/ijcpe.v1i1.47

This article reviews the evidence base for a range of contemporary, student-centred curriculum design methodologies, including inquiry-based learning (IBL), problem-based learning (PBL), project-based learning (PjBL), challenge-based learning (CBL), place-based learning and competency-based education (CBE), and considers their applicability to the design of a contemporary undergraduate criminology degree. Drawing on systematic reviews, meta-analyses and recent empirical literature, the article evaluates the theoretical underpinnings, andragogical benefits and structural limitations of each approach. It situates these findings within the requirements of the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education Subject Benchmark Statement for Criminology (QAA, 2022), which explicitly positions research and critical enquiry as foundational to the discipline and calls for curriculum designs that embed equality, diversity and inclusion, education for sustainable development, and professional partnership. The article argues that no single methodology is sufficient on its own and that a principled hybrid model, drawing selectively on the strengths of each approach, offers the most coherent and evidence-informed basis for criminology curriculum design. Implications for degree revalidation, staff development, assessment design and partnership are discussed.

As universities, within the UK and internationally, strive to promote equality, diversity and inclusion in their practices, policies and, ultimately, cultures, it is imperative to prioritise student voice and co-production with equity-denied groups. This study examines students’ views, particularly those of equity-denied groups, on student voice mechanisms and explores opportunities to develop more inclusive approaches to policy and practice design in higher education. This article draws on the literature on co-production and student-staff partnerships to critically explore the process of moving from transactional to dialogical approaches to eliciting and responding to the ‘student voice’, emphasising how relationship builiding in policy design can facilitate a more inclusive environment. The article is underpinned by student-led focus groups with students, a survey and roundtable discussions with Equality, Diversity and Inclusion leads nationally. The findings emphasise the importance of moving from transactional feedback methods towards adopting a dialogical, partnership-based approach to policy and practice design and evaluation. The article contributes a framework for when and how to co-produce with students in higher education, particularly those from equity denied groups. We contend that when conducted meaningfully, promoting dialogical student voice mechanisms and co-producing change with students can enhance student experience and ultimately inclusion, while promoting social justice in higher education.
