Cognitive flexibility enables individuals to navigate unpredictable situations and rapid changes. Because the prefrontal cortex governs both cognitive flexibility and emotional input, lifetime traumatic experiences may influence its development. Despite this, research examining the impact of childhood trauma on cognitive flexibility in early adulthood remains limited. This study investigates the relationship using a sequential explanatory approach. A total of 275 undergraduate and diploma students (ages 18–25) from Gadjah Mada University completed the Adverse Childhood Experiences-International Questionnaire (ACE-IQ) and the Cognitive Flexibility Scale (CFS). Simple linear regression and thematic analysis indicated that childhood trauma predicts cognitive flexibility in early adulthood. These findings highlight the importance of understanding the long-term impact of childhood trauma on cognitive adaptability, which may inform interventions to enhance resilience in early adulthood. Future research should consider developmental timing, sociocultural environment, education, socioeconomic status, and spirituality, as well as experimental performance measures.
Executive function (EF) is foundational for school readiness, mental health, and social adaptation. Although cross-national studies document cultural variation in EF, less is known about whether EF differs across ethnic groups within the same national and educational context. In China, Yi, Bai, and Naxi children may differ in home language, childrearing practices, and educational beliefs, making them informative for examining universal and context-specific patterns of EF development. This study examined Executive Function (EF) development in a sample of 190 Chinese ethnic children (Yi, Bai, Naxi; 115 boys, 75 girls) aged 4–6 years. These findings revealed that, (1) Overall EF scores were highest for Bai children, followed by Naxi children, and than Yi children. (2) For inhibition control (IC), at ages 4 and 5, Bai and Naxi children performed significantly better than Yi children, whereas no significant differences were observed among the three ethnic groups at age 6. (3) For cognitive flexibility (CF), Bai and Naxi children are significantly better than Yi children. On the size, color, and shape sub-dimensions, pass rates were highest for Bai children, followed by Naxi and then Yi children; on the quantity sub-dimension, pass rates were highest for Naxi children, followed by Bai and then Yi children. (4) For working memory (WM), at ages 4 and 6, the ranking of scores across the three ethnic groups showed that Bai children obtained the highest scores, followed by Naxi children and than Yi children; at age 5, Bai children scored significantly higher than Naxi and Yi children. These findings contribute to theories of EF development by revealing both age-related convergence and cross-ethnic variation, and they inform culturally responsive early childhood education and intervention.
Orthorexia Nervosa (ON) is widely regarded as an emerging eating disorder although it is not currently recognised as a formal diagnosis. It is characterised by a strict adherence to “pure” eating which becomes excessive and can lead to nutritional deficiencies, psychological distress, and impaired daily functioning. Restrictive eating behaviour in ON shows overlap with Restricted Repetitive Behaviours (RRBs) observed in autism. However, the conceptual relationship between ON and autism remains underexplored. This perspective article synthesises existing literature to explore potential overlapping and diverging mechanisms of RRBs across ON and autism. Intolerance for Uncertainty is highlighted as a possible shared mechanism that may contribute to RRBs observed in both ON and autism, whereas Cognitive Inflexibility and Perfectionism may mechanistically differentiate the conditions. We consider that autistic RRBs reflect neurodevelopmental divergence, whereas orthorexic RRBs may be influenced by evaluative belief-centred cognitions. We propose a conceptual model outlining how cognitive, affective and functional factors may interact to produce and maintain RRBs. Clarifying these distinctions is important in supporting clinicians to appropriately consider the drivers and mechanisms underlying RRBs across ON and autism, therefore supporting accurate diagnosis, formulation and treatment.
Executive functions (EF) predict school readiness and later adjustment. The cultural-historical tradition gives play a central place in preschool education, yet it remains unclear which types of play, under what conditions, and through which pathways support EF between the ages of 3 and 6. This article aims to critically analyze the evidence on play and EF in this age range, distinguishing between efficacy, association, and mechanism. The method was a systematic review with narrative synthesis, reported according to PRISMA 2020. Of 88 records (2000–2026), 21 primary studies provided direct evidence and 26 works provided complementary evidence. Rule-based games and pretend play showed favorable effects in studies with active control conditions, particularly on inhibitory control. However, the largest-scale curricular study found no effects, and block play showed no main effects. Benefits tend to be concentrated among children with initial disadvantages, and evidence on working memory, cognitive flexibility, and transfer to the classroom is scarce. In conclusion, play appears to be a promising context rather than an effective intervention in itself; its effects depend on executive demand, adult mediation, progression, and implementation fidelity.
Objective Executive function may protect against internalizing and externalizing problems, but it may also be compromised by these problems. This longitudinal study examined the developmental transactions between executive function and internalizing and externalizing problems across late childhood to adolescence using a Chinese sample.Method A total of 285 fifth-graders (younger cohort, 10.81 years, 58.6% boys) and 269 ninth-graders (older cohort, 14.74 years, 47.2% boys) were assessed for five waves across 3 years. At each wave (starting November 2020), youth reported internalizing and externalizing problems and completed inhibitory control, shifting, and updating tasks, and caregivers reported their child’s executive functioning by questionnaire. Results Random-intercept cross-lagged panel models revealed that poorer task-based executive functions predicted later externalizing problems in the younger cohort. In the older cohort, bidirectional associations emerged between rating-based executive function and internalizing problems, with component-specific analyses revealing that rating-based updating showed the most consistent associations. Gender differences emerged: parent-rated poorer executive functions predicted increases in externalizing and internalizing problems among girls in the older cohort. Conclusions These findings suggest the variations across age cohorts and measurement approaches in the associations between executive function and internalizing and externalizing problems from late childhood through adolescence. Further, these findings, derived from a Chinese cultural context, highlight the need for cross-cultural replication to determine generalizability.
Abstract This study examined the relationship between early learners’ cognitive flexibility and the effectiveness of child-centred pedagogies in early childhood classrooms. It had three objectives: to explore how cognitive flexibility relates to learner engagement and participation; to examine its relationship with independent learning and autonomy; and to assess its connection with critical thinking and creativity. The study used a descriptive survey design, supported by a correlational approach. Data were collected through teacher questionnaires, classroom observation checklists, and semi-structured interviews. Of the 40 teacher questionnaires distributed, 36 were returned, representing a 90% response rate. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize questionnaire responses, while observations and interviews provided qualitative evidence about classroom behaviours and teachers’ perceptions. Correlation coefficients were calculated to examine associations between cognitive flexibility and selected indicators of child-centred learning. The results showed positive relationships between cognitive flexibility and learner engagement (r =. .78), independent learning (r =. .74), and critical thinking (r =. .81). Observations and interviews also indicated that learners who adapted more readily to changing activities tended to participate actively, attempt tasks more independently, and generate alternative ideas during play, inquiry, and problem-solving activities. The findings suggest that cognitive flexibility is an important learner characteristic in child-centred classrooms, and that these environments can offer children opportunities to practise adaptive thinking. The study recommends deliberately incorporating flexible, play-based, inquiry-oriented, collaborative, and problem-solving activities, alongside appropriate scaffolding for learners who have difficulty with transitions. These findings should be interpreted as evidence of association rather than causal effects. Keywords: Cognitive flexibility, early learners, child-centred pedagogy, learner engagement, independent learning, autonomy, critical thinking, creativity.
This article argues that the persistent burden of burnout reflects a fundamental conceptual problem—burnout continues to be framed primarily as an individual condition rather than as an occupational phenomenon shaped by interacting structural, organizational, and leadership conditions. Burnout has emerged as a major occupational health challenge. In a 2024 survey across eight predominantly high and upper-middle-income countries, 48% of respondents reported currently grappling with burnout. Separately, depression and anxiety cost the global economy approximately one trillion dollars annually in lost productivity. Drawing on evidence from neuroimaging, stress biology, cognitive neuroscience, and organizational research, this article examines plausible pathways through which leadership behavior may influence conditions that contribute to or protect against burnout, including social threat–reward processing, cognitive flexibility, emotional intelligence, psychological safety, emotional contagion, and stress-related neurobiological responses. Among physicians, burnout has been associated with depression and anxiety, while evidence regarding substance abuse is less consistent. These proposed mechanisms are proximal and potentially modifiable, but operate within broader structural conditions that constrain or enable their effects. Human-centered work design and neuroleadership-informed leadership practices are proposed as complements to broader structural interventions, with implications for health systems, workforce sustainability, and policy design.
Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly embedded in second language (L2) learning, yet the cognitive demands of AI-mediated environments, particularly for logographic languages such as Chinese, remain underexplored. This study investigated the interrelationships among executive function (EF), reading-related linguistic skills, AI literacy, and Chinese L2 reading comprehension in 155 Form 4 Southeast Asian ethnic minority students in Hong Kong. Using a quantitative design, we validated a three-factor EF model (working memory, cognitive flexibility, inhibitory control) and examined how these components, together with orthographic and morphological skills, relate to L2 reading outcomes. Structural equation modeling showed that all three EF components significantly predicted reading comprehension, underscoring the importance of executive control for processing a complex logographic script. AI literacy significantly supported both foundational reading skills and overall reading comprehension. A key finding of the integrated model is that cognitive flexibility significantly predicted AI literacy, which in turn significantly predicted reading comprehension, indicating an indirect pathway from EF to reading via AI literacy. This pattern highlights the cognitive underpinnings of digital engagement in L2 learning. The study extends the Reading Systems Framework by positioning AI literacy as an external scaffold that interacts with learners’ cognitive resources, and offers practical implications for designing cognitively supportive, AI-enhanced Chinese L2 instruction for ethnic minority learners.
Abstract Hostile attribution bias (HAB) is a well-established predictor of aggression and related psychopathologies. Yet the early factors shaping its development are not yet fully understood. In particular, it remains unclear (1) how early conflictual relationships with significant adults and children’s cognitive capacities contribute to later HAB, and (2) whether these pathways differ by gender. The present study addressed these gaps in a longitudinal sample of 279 Arab and Jewish children (138 girls; 106 Arabs; 173 Jews), assessed in early (M age = 5.7, SD = 0.53; range: 4.3–7.0) and late (M age = 10.6, SD = 0.86, range: 9.0–12.75 years) childhood. Mother- and teacher–child conflict, executive functions (EFs), and early HAB were assessed in early childhood and HAB was assessed in late childhood. Multi-group analyses revealed gender-differentiated pathways: among boys, one EF (cognitive flexibility) predicted lower HAB ( β = −0.24); among girls, higher teacher–child conflict predicted higher HAB ( β = 0.36). These findings refine social information processing theory by showing that relational inputs to children’s social database are ecologically specific and that the balance between relational and cognitive pathways to HAB is gender-differentiated.
Cognitive flexibility requires rapid updating of internal representations when action–outcome contingencies change. Yet how feedback on a single trial reshapes the distributed activity patterns that implement these internal representations remains poorly understood. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during probabilistic reversal learning, we show that a Q-learning model with separate learning rates outperforms a standard model and reveals stronger learning from positive than negative reward prediction errors (RPE). Reversal increases prediction error magnitude and induces rapid multivoxel reorganization in medial temporal and adjacent subcortical regions. During early reversal, RPE-related activity in right striatal and medial orbitofrontal regions predicts subsequent changes in right lateral orbitofrontal cortex (lOFC) representations; these effects occur only after nonrewarded outcomes. Moreover, greater representational change in lOFC is associated with weakening of the action policy, and this pattern change in right lOFC is related to reward-stay behavior. Together, these findings link lOFC updating to behavioral policy adjustment during reversal learning.
