Background Helping professionals face elevated risks of compassion fatigue and burnout, yet the daily processes through which emotional transformation occurs during therapeutic interventions remain poorly understood. This study examined how participants’ daily reflections shifted across the Emotion-Focused Training for Helping Professions (EFT-HP), analyzed through three complementary theoretical frameworks: Emotion-Focused Therapy's inner dialogue model (self-criticism, self-compassion, self-protection), Compassion-Focused Therapy's three-systems framework (threat, drive, soothing), and Ekman's basic emotion theory (primary emotions). Method Two hundred twenty-five helping professionals (88.0% female; M age = 38.7 years) from healthcare, social work, psychology, and education began the 14-day online EFT-HP intervention. Primary analyses focused on the 146 participants who completed at least 9 of the 14 days (completers), whose daily written reflections yielded 7,307 coded reflection units. Reflections were analyzed with directed content analysis and frequency quantification, applying non-exclusive, AI-assisted coding within three theoretical frameworks—EFT inner-dialogue categories, CFT emotion-regulation systems, and Ekman's discrete emotions—with a verbatim textual evidence excerpt retained for every assigned code. Results Across the intervention, participants’ reflections shifted from threat- and self-criticism-related content toward soothing and self-compassion. Within the EFT inner-dialogue framework, Self-Compassion was the most frequent category (17.9% of units) and was sustained throughout (Day-13 peak 30.8%), while Self-Criticism fell from 14.3% on Day 1 to 3.9% on Day 14 (73% relative decrease) and Self-Protection peaked on Day 6 (11.3%). Within the CFT emotion-regulation framework, the soothing system was the most frequently coded system overall (31.8% of units), followed by drive (20.4%); over the 14 days the threat system declined from 35.4% on Day 1 to 7.0% on Day 14 (80% relative decrease). Within Ekman's discrete-emotion framework, specific emotions were named less frequently: Fear declined from 2.7% to 0.8%, Anger peaked on Day 6 (15.0%), Joy rose to a Day-13 peak (14.8%), and Love was comparatively prominent (11.9% overall, Day-5 peak). Conclusions Across the 14-day intervention, participants’ daily reflections showed substantial shifts in emotional content, characterized by marked self-criticism and threat reduction alongside sustained self-compassion and soothing activation. Triangulated findings across three analytical frameworks: EFT inner dialogue, CFT emotion systems, and Ekman's primary emotions, are consistent with the emotional-transformation processes proposed by EFT-HP and with findings from previous controlled trials. Because the three frameworks were applied to the same reflection data, their convergence reflects analytic (theoretical) triangulation rather than independent confirmation.
Background: Spouses of persons with psychosis carry a distinct caregiving burden, but Indian studies often group them with other relatives. The study aims to assess anxiety and stress among spouses of persons with psychosis, examine their association with coping and family functioning, and explore differences by gender and marriage duration. Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional analytical study, 80 spouses (32 men, 48 women) were recruited by purposive sampling at a tertiary psychiatric hospital in Goa. Anxiety and stress were measured with DASS-21 subscales, family functioning with the General Functioning subscale of the McMaster Family Assessment Device (FAD-GF), and coping with a 10-item researcher-constructed questionnaire. Results: Severe or extremely severe anxiety was reported by 95.0% of spouses, while 86.3% had moderate stress. Anxiety (ρ = 0.31, p = 0.005) and stress (ρ = 0.42, p < 0.001) were positively correlated with FAD-GF scores, indicating poorer family functioning with greater psychological distress. Coping scores were negatively correlated with anxiety (ρ = −0.27, p = 0.015) and FAD-GF scores (ρ = −0.30, p = 0.007), indicating that lower coping scores, defined as more frequent and effective coping, were unexpectedly associated with greater anxiety and poorer family functioning. The correlation between coping and stress was not statistically significant (ρ = −0.21, p = 0.062). Women reported higher anxiety than men (p = 0.047). Family functioning differed across marriage-duration groups (p = 0.036), although no pairwise differences remained significant after Bonferroni correction. Conclusion: Severe anxiety was very common among spouses and was associated with poorer family functioning. Because the design is cross-sectional, the sample is small and from one centre, and the coping scale is not validated, the findings show association only. Routine assessment of spouses and family-focused support are indicated. Keywords: Spouses; psychosis; anxiety; stress; coping; family functioning
Background Rooted in positive psychology, human flourishing scholarship focuses on the presence of health and wellbeing beyond the absence of illness. Contemporary flourishing research has increasingly expanded its focus beyond individuals to larger systems, including families. Family flourishing is an emerging concept with limited clarity in its conceptualizations and measurements. This scoping review synthesized existing literature on the unit-level conceptualizations and operationalizations of family flourishing and wellbeing and examined the extent to which existing measures align with contemporary understandings of human flourishing. Methods Arksey and O'Malley's methodology and the PRISMA-ScR reporting guidelines were followed. Searches were conducted in PubMed, CINAHL, ERIC, PsycINFO, Social Work Abstracts, Academic Search Premier, and Web of Science. Eligible studies presented explicit unit-level conceptualizations or quantitative measures of family flourishing or wellbeing as a multidimensional construct. Only studies written in English and published since 2000 were included. Title and abstract screening, full-text screening, and data extraction were conducted by two independent researchers, while monitoring inter-coder reliability. Discrepancies were resolved through consensus in consultation with the PI. Data extraction utilized a standardized form for consistency, which was iteratively revised through discussion. Results The final sample included 13 studies, which represented diverse regions, including China, Japan, Taiwan, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, New Zealand, the Philippines, and the United States. Studies were published between 2005 and 2025, with most studies published since 2020. Seven quantitative measures of family wellbeing were identified while no family flourishing measures were found. Conceptualizations represented diverse roots including Aristotelian eudaimonia, Indigenous cultural beliefs, and local spiritual teachings. While boundaries were often unclear, six broad categories of conceptualizations were identified, including relational/functional. eudaimonic/existential, hedonic/emotional, social/community, socioeconomic/environmental, and spiritual/religious domains. Relational/functional domains were most frequently covered while spiritual/religious domains were least frequently covered by existing measures. Most measures were developed more than a decade ago, and psychometric evidence beyond internal consistency was limited. Conclusion Family flourishing is an underdeveloped but promising area of scholarship. Further studies are needed to achieve greater conceptual clarity and to develop culturally responsive and psychometrically robust measures. Introduction Hybrid teaching, in which students attend lectures either in the physical presence of a lecturer or synchronously via video link from another location, has become increasingly common at multi-campus institutions, yet research systematically comparing student satisfaction and perceived learning in this format remains limited. Methods This study examined synchronous hybrid teaching in an undergraduate Social Work programme delivered across two Swedish campuses, in which the defining difference between student groups was not physical attendance as such, since students at both sites were present in university classrooms, but whether the lecturer taught in person or via videoconference from the other campus. A total of 282 students completed a study-specific questionnaire across three consecutive semesters, assessing overall satisfaction, perceived learning under both lecturer conditions, ability to focus, sense of community, and technical problems. Results Perceived learning was consistently higher when the lecturer was physically present than when teaching remotely (d = 1.24), a pattern that held within students at both campuses, indicating that it was not attributable to campus affiliation alone. Students at the satellite campus reported significantly higher overall satisfaction than students at the main campus, but this campus-level difference was no longer statistically significant once pedagogical and technical factors were accounted for in a multiple regression model; instead, perceived learning during remote-lecturer sessions, ability to focus, sense of community, and technical problems emerged as the strongest independent predictors of satisfaction, together explaining 57.4% of its variance. Discussion These findings suggest that satisfaction and perceived learning represent partly distinct dimensions of the hybrid teaching experience and suggest that local pedagogical support and reliable technical delivery during remote-lecturer sessions may matter more for student satisfaction than physical co-location with the lecturer itself.
This article examines the subject positions taken by or given to social workers when working with a grieving child. The research data were based on five group interviews with Finnish public-sector social workers (N = 17) collected in January–June 2022. The data were analysed through subject-positional analysis that identified four subject positions representing the social workers’ actions in dealing with a child experiencing grief and the consequences of these actions. The positions of service system navigator, visibility enabler, listener, and referrer make visible the social workers’ actions and their concrete consequences for the bereaved child. They highlight not only the important role of social work in identifying children’s emotions, but also the effect of confusing work practices on children’s access to help.
Peer Recovery Support Services are increasingly integrated into child welfare contexts to support parents with substance use disorders, yet there is limited research on how peer support specialists understand their role identity and enact core peer values within systems with conflicting value structures. This qualitative study explores the values, identity, and role boundaries of peer support specialists working with child welfare-involved parents. Drawing on in-depth interviews with twenty certified peer support specialists, we examine how peers define recovery-oriented practice, utilize lived experience, and navigate tensions between relational, autonomy-centered peer work and the demands of the child welfare system. Findings highlight three core principles of peer work - purposeful use of lived experience, relational equality characterized as “walking alongside,” and peer autonomy – and provide insight into how peer support specialists protect these principles in the child welfare context. Participants describe how maintaining fidelity to the peer support specialist role requires education, active negotiation, and boundary setting with courts, child welfare agencies, and multidisciplinary teams. This study contributes to the knowledge base on peer support for parents impacted by both substance use disorder and child welfare involvement. By centering the perspectives of peer support specialists, we identify organizational and systems-level conditions that support successful integration of peer support in child welfare systems while preserving its foundational values.
Introduction Emotional and behavioural problems (EBPs) in early childhood have long-term implications, yet little is known about how family caregivers experience family-based primary prevention and how this prevention is conceptualised within Indonesian sociocultural, educational, health-service, and policy settings.Theory The Neuman Systems Model, Family-Centred Care, and the Correlated Constraints Model were used as sensitising theoretical lenses to interpret family experiences without imposing predetermined themes.Method This qualitative phenomenological study involved 34 purposively selected participants in Banjarmasin, Indonesia. Eight family caregivers in individual interviews and 26 health professionals, teachers, and policymakers in three focus group discussions (FGDs). Individual interviews elicited family caregivers’ personal caregiving experiences, whereas FGDs examined collective professional and system-level perspectives. Data were collected in Indonesian or Banjar and analysed using a hybrid inductive-deductive framework and thematic analysis. Results Seven themes were identified: adaptive functioning, perceived difficulties, multilevel stressors, everyday prevention, supportive resources, prevention constraints, and holistic support needs.Discussion Families experienced prevention as everyday, relational, and context-dependent work shaped by emotional caregiving, family routines, access to support, and social and service constraints. Findings support culturally responsive, family-centred public health strategies for strengthening early prevention of EBPs in preschool children.
Anglicare Southern Queensland (Anglicare) is a not-for-profit organisation that delivers community and human services. With a long history of hosting applied student placements in aged care, social work and community services, mental health and wellbeing, youth support, and nursing and allied health, Anglicare has in recent times begun to expand our hosting of work-integrated learning (WIL) relating to research and evaluation, advocacy, and community outreach. Proceeding from the principle that different types of WIL are advantageous to social science and humanities students at all levels, we currently host a variety of industry research projects, student placements, and internships. These arrangements encompass everything from formal assessment to projects that are co-designed between student/s and supervisor/s. The benefits of hosting WIL include supporting the future careers of emerging professionals while simultaneously expanding our capacity in research, evaluation, and advocacy. As working with students who are new to a corporate workplace can also be time intensive, WIL programs need adequate university staffing to support students’ engagement with industry hosts and moderated timelines for assessment and reporting requirements. In this practitioner reflection, we discuss how Anglicare’s Centre for Research and Social Change establishes and manages community engaged WIL partnerships, welcoming undergraduate and postgraduate students in all areas of the social sciences and humanities.
Reduced resources in the public sector, combined with an ageing population and increasing existential needs, mean that social service caseworkers need strategies to manage and limit their workload. Social service caseworkers consequently need to develop new ways to manage the population’s increased existential needs. The purpose of the study is therefore to analyse and understand how social workers handle existential issues during the needs assessment process for home care services. Data have been collected through semi-structured interviews with social service caseworkers (N = 15) (2022–2024). The results show that shifting responsibility (e.g. delegation and integration) and professional sensitivity (e.g. tacit knowledge, empathy and adaptation) were two prevalent strategies. The study uses the term neglective restrictiveness to further explain how social service caseworkers combine the two strategies in order to consciously disregard and transform existential needs into a non-issue. A hard-to-manage area is dealt with through actions including delay, omission, disregard and delegation. The study develops the SLB theory, particularly in relation to situations that require an emotional stance.
