Linguistic and Stylistic Over-Elaboration in AI-Permitted Arabic Writing Tasks: Evidence from Beginner Learners

Mahmoud Abd El Fattah Ibrahim Essa Educational Innovation Research, 2026, Vol. 4, Issue 6, pp. 197-204 https://doi.org/10.26689/eir.v4i6.15920

چکیده

This study examines linguistic and stylistic over-elaboration in beginner Arabic writing produced during a classroom task permitting generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) and electronic translation. The study emerged from an Arabic language course involving undergraduate accounting students at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Terengganu Branch, Malaysia. Students were instructed to write a simple birthday invitation addressed to friends, using accessible vocabulary and including specified invitation elements. During the review of approximately 100 submissions, the instructor observed recurring instances of vocabulary, courtesy expressions, and sentence formulations that appeared more sophisticated or formal than expected for the learners' proficiency and the task's communicative purpose. Adopting an exploratory qualitative approach, the study draws on these professional classroom observations, supplemented by the direct examination of three available invitation texts. The analysis considers lexical overreach, stylistic over-elaboration, unnecessary syntactic complexity, register mismatch, and learner-level appropriateness. The findings highlight a pedagogical distinction between linguistic correctness and the suitability of written expression for a beginner's level and communicative situation. They also suggest that apparently sophisticated writing should not automatically be interpreted as evidence of independent linguistic proficiency. Because individual tool use and writing processes were not documented, the study does not attribute particular expressions to GenAI or establish causal effects.

Trajectories of syntactic complexity and subordination across Spanish and English in bilingual children with and without developmental language disorder

Lourdes Martinez-Nieto; Kendra Ames; María Adelaida Restrepo; Carol Mesa; Melissa Pierce-Rivera; Theresa Moen; … Frontiers in Education, 2026, Vol. 11, pp. 1940578 https://doi.org/10.3389/feduc.2026.1940578

چکیده

Purpose This longitudinal study examined the development of complex syntax in Spanish–English bilingual children with and without developmental language disorder (DLD) from prekindergarten (PK) to 3rd grade. We evaluated syntactic complexity and grammaticality using Subordination Index (SI) and ungrammaticality (UG), overall subordinate clause use using the percentage of complex utterances, and subordinate clause-type development (nominal, adverbial, and relative clauses) in English and Spanish. Method Fifty-four bilingual children (39 typically developing TDL, 15 DLD) completed narrative retells in English and Spanish in PK, 1st, and 3rd grade. Language samples were analyzed using SALT-derived SI and UG measures, and utterances were coded for subordinate clause presence and type. Linear mixed models examined the effects of Grade and Group separately by language and outcome. Results Both groups showed developmental increases in syntactic complexity and subordination across grades, but patterns differed by language. In English, TDL and DLD children showed broadly similar growth, with no significant group differences in SI, overall subordinate clause use, or clause-type production. In Spanish, the heritage language, group differences were more pronounced. TDL children showed significant gains in overall subordination and nominal clause use, whereas children with DLD showed limited growth after 1st grade. Clause-type analyses revealed reduced growth and lower diversity of subordinate clauses in Spanish among children with DLD, particularly for nominal clauses. Conclusions Complex syntax developed in both groups across languages; however, Spanish showed greater vulnerability than English, particularly for children with DLD. Clause-type analyses revealed group differences not fully captured by global syntactic measures, highlighting the importance of examining complex syntax in the heritage language. This study provides longitudinal evidence of distinct syntactic trajectories across the two languages in bilingual children with and without DLD.

Linguistic complexity and writing proficiency in assessing L2 Spanish writing

پیچیدگی زبانی و مهارت نوشتاری در ارزیابی نگارش زبان دوم اسپانیایی

Peiyu Yang; Wenqian Huang; Guangyuan Yao Language Teaching, 2026, pp. 1-17 https://doi.org/10.1017/s0261444826101426

چکیده

Abstract Although linguistic complexity is widely used to assess second language (L2) writing proficiency, the linguistic correlates of L2 Spanish writing proficiency remain relatively underexplored. This study addresses this gap by examining how selected lexical, syntactic, and morphological complexity indices predict L2 Spanish learners’ standardized proficiency scores. We analyzed a corpus of 3,034 essays from L2 Spanish learners, utilizing their standardized placement test scores as a continuous measure of proficiency. A multiple linear regression model identified a concise set of complexity indices that effectively predicted proficiency scores, explaining a significant portion of the variance ( R 2 = .557). Results reveal a clear proficiency-based linguistic profile: advanced writing was significantly predicted by greater phrasal complexity, sustained clausal subordination, and higher lexical sophistication. In contrast, beginners’ writing was characterized by simpler syntactic strategies. These findings provide a robust, empirically derived profile of L2 Spanish writing development, offering valuable implications for pedagogical instruction, assessment rubrics, and automated evaluation tools.

Input and uptake for complex syntactic structures in child language development: Implementing structural priming with diverse learner populations

ورودی و جذب ساختارهای نحوی پیچیده در رشد زبان کودکان: به‌کارگیری آغازگری ساختاری در جمعیت‌های متنوع یادگیرندگان

Jiuzhou Hao; Patrick Sturt; Jason Rothman; Vicky Chondrogianni Cognition, 2026, Vol. 278, pp. 106734 https://doi.org/10.1016/j.cognition.2026.106734

چکیده

Language development depends on both the quantity of linguistic input children receive and their ability to uptake input, yet the relationship between these two factors remains unclear. This study adopted the structural priming paradigm to examine how input and uptake shape syntactic development in three groups of Mandarin-speaking children aged 5–9 years ( N = 75, N female = 39): neurotypical monolinguals (optimal input and uptake), monolinguals with Developmental Language Disorder (optimal input, reduced uptake), and Mandarin-English heritage bilinguals (reduced input, optimal uptake). All groups had acquired the target non-canonical structures (the BA-, BEI-, and OSV-constructions). However, reduced input and reduced uptake were associated with distinct production patterns. Heritage bilinguals produced more canonical structures (the SVO-construction), whereas monolingual children, particularly those with Developmental Language Disorder, favoured the BA-construction, suggesting differences in underlying learning mechanisms and production strategies that may be shaped by their language (learning) experience. Moreover, while richer input enhanced uptake, reduced input did not diminish it, suggesting input quantity and processing ability play separable yet interacting roles in development.
