The role of speaker accuracy and mutual exclusivity in children’s novel word learning

Shalini Banerjee; Ishanti Gangopadhyay PLoS ONE, 2026, Vol. 21, Issue 10, pp. e0361483 https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0361483

چکیده

Children draw on multiple sources of information during word learning, including speaker testimony and lexical expectations. Yet, little is known about how these cues jointly influence children’s ability to learn new words. The present study examined the combined effect of speaker accuracy and mutual exclusivity (ME) on short-term retention of label-object associations in 4- to 7-year-old monolingual English speaking children. Children were presented novel and familiar object pairs, and were taught novel labels by either an accurate speaker (one who previously labeled familiar objects correctly) or an inaccurate speaker (one who previously labeled familiar objects incorrectly). Novel labels were introduced under two conditions: Align-with-ME (speakers labeled the novel object with novel names) and Conflict-with-ME (speakers labeled the familiar object with novel names, conflicting with ME). Results showed that children retained novel labels for novel objects from both accurate and inaccurate speakers when speaker testimony aligned with ME expectations. This suggests that children are open to learning novel words from speakers regardless of their prior accuracy and may also draw on other available cues, such as label–object co-occurrences, during learning. However, when speaker testimony violated ME expectations, children performed poorly, possibly due to difficulty disambiguating between speaker testimony and their existing lexical knowledge. Together, these findings suggest that children’s short-term retention of label–object associations is supported when available cues align, irrespective of speaker accuracy status. These associations, however, become less robust when ME and speaker cues provide conflicting information.

Input and uptake for complex syntactic structures in child language development: Implementing structural priming with diverse learner populations

ورودی و جذب ساختارهای نحوی پیچیده در رشد زبان کودکان: به‌کارگیری آغازگری ساختاری در جمعیت‌های متنوع یادگیرندگان

چکیده

Language development depends on both the quantity of linguistic input children receive and their ability to uptake input, yet the relationship between these two factors remains unclear. This study adopted the structural priming paradigm to examine how input and uptake shape syntactic development in three groups of Mandarin-speaking children aged 5–9 years ( N = 75, N female = 39): neurotypical monolinguals (optimal input and uptake), monolinguals with Developmental Language Disorder (optimal input, reduced uptake), and Mandarin-English heritage bilinguals (reduced input, optimal uptake). All groups had acquired the target non-canonical structures (the BA-, BEI-, and OSV-constructions). However, reduced input and reduced uptake were associated with distinct production patterns. Heritage bilinguals produced more canonical structures (the SVO-construction), whereas monolingual children, particularly those with Developmental Language Disorder, favoured the BA-construction, suggesting differences in underlying learning mechanisms and production strategies that may be shaped by their language (learning) experience. Moreover, while richer input enhanced uptake, reduced input did not diminish it, suggesting input quantity and processing ability play separable yet interacting roles in development.

Lexical learning and language change: raising in English from the perspective of acquisition and diachrony

یادگیری واژگانی و تغییر زبان: بررسی پدیدهٔ رِیزینگ در زبان انگلیسی از منظر اکتساب و تحول تاریخی

Sigríður Mjöll Björnsdóttir; Lisa Gotthard; George Walkden English Language and Linguistics, 2026, Vol. 2026, pp. 1-21 https://doi.org/10.1017/s1360674326100793

چکیده

Abstract Raising and control structures in Present-day English are surface-identical, yet differ in crucial ways both syntactically and semantically. We study the difference between the two from a diachronic and acquisitional perspective. Historically, raising has been argued to have emerged out of control (Higgins 1990). Similarly, raising has been found to be developmentally delayed compared to control (e.g. Wexler & Culicover 1987). We use quantitative methods to study the spread of TO -infinitives in child-directed and child naturalistic speech. In parallel, we study the same process in Early Modern English and what distributional properties may have facilitated the emergence of the distinction. Furthermore, we put to the test a learning model, the Tolerance Principle (Yang 2016), against the diachronic data. We argue that the emergence of raising historically was most likely a consequence of the broader rise of the requirement for an overt subject – an argument that has a clear parallel in recent research on the acquisition of raising using the same methods (Irani 2019).
