This study aims to examine the concept of economic justice from the Qur’anic perspective through an exegetical analysis of QS. An-Nahl [16]:90, QS. Al-Hasyr [59]:7, and QS. Al-Maidah [5]:8. Employing a qualitative method and a thematic exegesis (tafsir maudhu’i) approach, this study explores the meanings of justice and wealth distribution, as well as the moral values embedded in these verses. The findings indicate that economic justice in the Qur’an is grounded in the integration of the principles of al-‘adl (justice and integrity), al-ihsan (benevolence and excellence), and distributive justice. The concept of al-‘adl emphasizes the importance of balance, honesty, and respect for rights in economic activities, while al-ihsan extends the meaning of justice by incorporating social concern and an orientation toward public welfare (maslahah). QS. Al-Hasyr [59]:7 demonstrates that the Qur’an promotes equitable wealth distribution and rejects the concentration of wealth within certain groups. The findings further affirm that the Qur’anic economic framework is not solely oriented toward ownership and material growth but also places social responsibility at the core of wealth management. This concept remains relevant to contemporary issues of economic inequality through an economic paradigm that integrates spiritual, moral, and social dimensions.
Rhode Islanders voted in 2020 to remove the phrase Providence Plantations from the state's official name despite overwhelmingly rejecting an identical ballot measure in 2010. Drawing on intersecting literatures on critical toponymies, memory-work, and issue framing, we argue that the 2020 ballot measure succeeded where the 2010 measure failed because of three interrelated factors. First, the ongoing memory-work of racial justice advocates in Rhode Island and beyond significantly altered the repertoire of acceptable narratives, images, and symbols available to Rhode Island's political elite between 2010 and 2020. Second, the intense Black Lives Matter protests in May and June 2020 represented a critical juncture that gave supportive Rhode Island politicians the opportunity to reintroduce the name-change ballot measure under the broader banner of reckoning with systemic racism in the United States. Finally, activists and supportive politicians learned from the mistakes of 2010 and in 2020 mounted a more organized public advocacy campaign framed around contemporary racial justice issues designed to persuade Rhode Island voters to adopt the name change.
We conduct a large-scale, randomized controlled trial of a six-month intervention combining intensive mentoring and group cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for youth in Chicago, following study participants for up to five years. The program was designed to engage young people at higher risk of involvement with the criminal justice system, and successfully did so with a take-up rate of 62%. Participants averaged 177 hours with mentors and nine hours of group CBT. After 24 months, youth offered the program experienced a 19% reduction in the probability of being arrested. Notably, this impact persists into adulthood, as effects remain stable through five years post-randomization. A reduction in arrests for violent offenses is driving this overall arrest reduction, with a 23% reduction in the probability of a violent-crime arrest after 24 months. The program does not impact school enrollment persistence (graduation or being enrolled), but shows suggestive improvements in school behavior and school mobility. We conclude that programs that combine mentoring and CBT can serve as a model for engaging a harder-to-reach population of youth, and can be effective in reducing criminal justice contact in the longer run.
As universities respond to global challenges through local partnerships, Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) has become a key strategy for preparing students for complex career landscapes. This comparative study examines community-engaged WIL in criminology and justice sector programmes within Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom (UK). Drawing on key policy frameworks from these three countries, we explore various contexts that shape WIL design, delivery, and sustainability. We begin with a policy landscape analysis of funding mechanisms and regulatory frameworks that enable or constrain WIL. Three case studies illustrate how programmes navigate these contexts: (1) an Australian example showcasing low-cost simulation models such as community surveys; (2) a Canadian case highlighting structured partnerships with criminal justice-related organisations; and (3) a case study from the UK examining WIL integration within policing apprenticeships. Our analysis highlights shared strategies including partnerships in community, common challenges such as risk management, partnership sustainability, and tensions between disciplinary fields. Findings offer a practical framework for implementing community-engaged WIL. We argue that innovation often emerges from the margins through creative pedagogy, cross-sector collaboration, and commitment to student and community voice, alongside policy recommendations to strengthen employability, identity development and sustainable community partnerships.
