Automatic imitation is a stimulus-response compatibility effect wherein observing an action automatically influences motor performance. However, the mechanism underlying this effect remains controversial. Associative Sequence Learning suggests that automatic imitation arises from contingent visual and motor activity associations. Prior studies have shown that exposure to counter-imitative training can alter these visuomotor associations, suggesting that automatic imitation can be modulated by experience. Here, we aim to bring new insight into how this modulation occurs by exploring the time course of automatic imitation before and after counter-imitative training. If automatic imitation is merely a result of contingent associations, as previously suggested, the effect should consistently be modulated following such training. However, our findings show that automatic imitation is not significantly reduced after counter-imitative training at all the tested time points. This suggests that automatic imitation does not depend on contingent association, at least not as currently understood.

Large Language Models (LLMs) have demonstrated significant capabilities in generating human-like and contextually relevant responses across a wide range of applications. However, their reliability is affected not only by factual hallucinations but also by failures to correctly understand and follow user instructions. This emerging issue, referred to as intent hallucination, occurs when an LLM omits, misinterprets, or fails to satisfy one or more requirements contained in a user's request, even when the generated response may be factually correct.Such failures can reduce the reliability and usefulness of LLM-based systems, particularly in complex tasks involving multiple constraints. This paper proposes a systematic review of existing research on intent hallucination and instructionfollowing capabilities in Large Language Models. The study will examine major types and causes of instructionfollowing failures, existing benchmarks and evaluation techniques, methods for detecting such failures, and approaches proposed to mitigate them. The review will also compare current evaluation frameworks and investigate limitations in existing research, particularly concerning complex, multi-constraint, and dynamic user instructions.Based on the reviewed literature, the study aims to organize existing approaches into a structured taxonomy covering instruction-following failures, detection and evaluation methods, and mitigation strategies. Finally, the paper will highlight open research challenges and future directions for developing more reliable and intent-aligned LLM systems. The study aims to provide a consolidated understanding of intent hallucination and support future research toward more dependable human-AI interaction.

Brittle threshold: When adaptive success is the warning sign

Sayra Cristancho Medical Education, 2026, pp. medu.70322 https://doi.org/10.1111/medu.70322

CONTEXT: What happens when a system keeps working-not because it is well designed but because people keep absorbing the strain? That question stayed with me after studying a community-led vaccination clinic during the COVID-19 pandemic. It delivered hundreds of vaccinations a day, with no formal chain of command or protocols. By any measure, it was a success. What it cost to sustain that success was never examined. Across my empirical work, I kept encountering the same pattern: systems functioning because people stretched roles, coordinated through workarounds and relied on relationships that were not designed to carry the full load. These adaptations were effective. Yet they were also hiding strain. CONCEPTUAL CONTRIBUTION: In this paper, I introduce Brittle Threshold as a concept for attending to this condition. Rather than treating adaptive action as evidence of success, Brittle Threshold frames adaptive action as diagnostic information: evidence of how a system is coping and how close it may be operating to its limits. Drawing on resilience engineering and on empirical patterns from studies of team adaptation and community crisis response, I argue that adaptive success and vulnerability regularly coexist. The more smoothly work appears to run, the more it may depend on fragile support. IMPLICATIONS: Brittle Threshold offers three contributions. It translates what adaptive success conceals in health professions education, it shifts what counts as evidence of system strain and it unsettles the moralisation of endurance as professional virtue. The question it opens is not why systems fail, but when is endurance no longer enough?

Audiovisual interactions modulate visuocortical gain

Minsun Park; Sam Ling Communications Biology, 2026 https://doi.org/10.1038/s42003-026-11033-x

How is vision shaped by other senses? Visual cortex is not merely a passive recipient of retinal inputs. It is also responsive to other sensory modalities, particularly audition. While auditory signals have been shown to penetrate early visual cortices, the mechanisms driving these responses remain poorly understood. To examine how audition shapes vision, we used functional MRI to investigate whether audiovisual interactions modulate the gain of responses in human early visual cortices. Specifically, we measured voxel-wise contrast-response functions (CRF), while participants viewed horizontally drifting gratings paired with auditory motion that was directionally congruent or incongruent with the visual motion, or stationary. We show that congruent audiovisual motion enhances voxel-wise contrast sensitivity whereas incongruent motion reduces it, manifesting as a robust contrast gain modulation across areas V1–V3. This direction-selective enhancement is nicely captured by a divisive normalization model incorporating auditory-driven feedback modulation. Our findings provide compelling evidence for cross-modal interactions at early stages of visual processing, driven by contrast gain modulation –a bidirectional modulation in sensitivity that maintains the balance between local excitatory and inhibitory activity. Together, these results reveal that audiovisual interactions can alter a cornerstone property of vision, highlighting the dynamic role of early visual cortex in multisensory processing.
