The landscape of foreign language education, particularly Arabic language instruction, is currently undergoing a fundamental transformation driven by the emergence of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) and Large Language Models (LLMs). This Systematic Literature Review evaluates recent developments in the integration of GenAI into the Arabic language learning ecosystem, encompassing trends in the evolution of language models, pedagogical effectiveness, the utilization of automated assessment systems, as well as the linguistic and cultural challenges involved. Through a thematic synthesis of empirical and theoretical literature published between 2019 and 2026, this review confirms that GenAI significantly enhances learner engagement, instructional personalization, and language skill acquisition, particularly in vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension. These improvements are driven by the adoption of general-purpose models such as ChatGPT, as well as leading Arabic-centric models such as JAIS and ALLaM. Nevertheless, this innovative integration encounters the inherent structural complexity of the Arabic language. Generative models frequently experience technical limitations in handling syntactic rules (nahwu), morphology (shorof), diacritic disambiguation, and regional dialect variations, as evidenced by performance gaps in linguistic benchmarks such as AraLingBench and AlGhafa. Furthermore, this review discusses rapid advances in trait-based Automated Essay Scoring (AES) supported by precise prompt engineering. Based on these findings, the study concludes that although GenAI has significant potential to bring positive disruption, its successful implementation depends heavily on pedagogical readiness, digital literacy, the application of Human-in-the-Loop (HITL) collaboration, and the development of ethical frameworks aligned with the epistemology of Islamic higher education.
Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly used in dental education, but research has focused mainly on answer accuracy. Whether LLMs can identify the cognitive demand of examination items remains unclear. This study evaluated LLM classification fidelity for endodontic multiple-choice questions (MCQs) across three educational taxonomies and compared four publicly accessible models. Two hundred endodontic MCQs from the Turkish Dentistry Specialty Examination (DUS, 2012–2025) were classified by ChatGPT, Gemini, Kimi, and DeepSeek according to Revised Bloom’s Taxonomy, the SOLO Taxonomy, and Miller’s Pyramid. A three-layer expert consensus procedure comprising calibration training, procedural audit, and structured joint deliberation established the expert consensus reference standard. Agreement was assessed using weighted Cohen’s kappa (κw) with bootstrap 95% confidence intervals; classification performance was evaluated using accuracy and macro-averaged F1. Inter-model differences in item-level accuracy were tested using Cochran’s Q with Kendall’s W, followed by Holm–Bonferroni-corrected pairwise McNemar tests. For Revised Bloom’s Taxonomy, Gemini (κw=0.676) and DeepSeek (κw=0.667) achieved substantial agreement, while Kimi (κw=0.428) and ChatGPT (κw=0.365) performed lower. For SOLO, Gemini achieved substantial agreement (κw=0.622), while the remaining models showed moderate agreement. For Miller’s Pyramid, agreement did not exceed fair, with ChatGPT highest (κw=0.372). Inter-model differences were significant for all three taxonomies (all p<0.001). ChatGPT ranked lowest for Revised Bloom and SOLO but highest for Miller. Revised Bloom levels of expert consensus reference standard increased significantly across examination years (Spearman ρ=0.301, p<0.001). LLMs showed meaningful classification fidelity for Revised Bloom and SOLO taxonomies, particularly Gemini and DeepSeek, but performance for Miller’s Pyramid remained weak. Bloom, SOLO, and Miller should not be treated as interchangeable frameworks, and LLM selection should be tailored to the taxonomy and assessment purpose. Answer accuracy and taxonomy classification fidelity represent distinct capabilities that warrant independent evaluation.
Generative AI, and more precisely large language models, have nowadays rapidly become useful in education, professional work, and everyday tasks. While these systems offer notable benefits to make work efficient and improved accessibility, the recent evidence suggests that their usage has cognitive costs. This paper presents a structured review of 16 reviewed studies investigating the impact of Gen AI usage on cognitive offloading, metacognitive engagement, automation bias, and human skill. By studying experimental, survey-based, qualitative, and theoretical research, this review synthesizes several findings across several fields to identify recurring mechanisms through which GenAI usage reshapes cognition. Our analysis reveals a consistent pattern, where GenAI often improves short-term task performance, but it frequently minimizes effortful cognitive processing, diminishes self-regulation, and changes skill developments. Rather than constant de-skilling, this paper points out reconfiguration of skills, favoring efficiency-oriented competencies such as prompting and verification over generative reasoning and critical reflection. Our study further highlights these outcomes are not unavoidable but are strongly mediated by interaction design, educational practices, and socio-technical environments. By showing these effects as the “cost of convenience,” this paper contributes an integrative perspective on the cognitive effects of Gen AI and highlighting the ways to make AI design, education, and governance cognitively sustainable.
Sentiment analysis from video streams requires effective modeling of both temporal dynamics and multimodal cues. This paper presents a lightweight multimodal CNN-LSTM framework, designed for low-latency operation on live video streams, that classifies individuals' affective states as negative, neutral, or positive by jointly exploiting audio and visual information. The proposed system consists of four lightweight deep neural network models that fuse sequences of audio and visual features into a unified temporal stream, enabling the accumulation of sentiment evidence over time for robust prediction. To further enhance discriminative power, dynamic mouth state classification is incorporated, allowing the model to better capture subtle visual cues related to speech and sentiment. Experiments conducted on the Ryerson Audio-Visual Database of Emotional Speech (RAVDESS) demonstrate that the proposed approach achieves a test accuracy of 84.89% on the three-class sentiment recognition task, competitive with substantially larger audio-visual architectures, while using an order of magnitude fewer parameters and maintaining low-latency operation. In addition, we provide a comprehensive comparison with multiple multimodal large language models (LLMs), evaluated under diverse input configurations and prompting strategies. The results offer practical insights into the strengths and limitations of contemporary LLMs for audio-visual sentiment analysis and highlight the continued effectiveness of compact, task-specific neural architectures for streaming audio-visual input.
Background Large language models are increasingly used for informal mental health support, yet their safety during escalating suicide-risk conversations may depend on how prior information is presented. Native multi-turn conversations and reconstructed cumulative prompts differ not only in the presence of prior model responses but also in prompt reconstruction, information concentration, message positioning, explicit integration cues, and conversation-state processing. Objective This study compared suicide-risk recognition, direct safety inquiry, response urgency, and timely real-world intervention across isolated current-turn prompts, reconstructed cumulative user-only prompts, and native continuous multi-turn conversations. Methods We conducted a controlled repeated-measures evaluation of ChatGPT, Gemini, and Doubao using 12 standardized five-turn trajectories: 4 direct suicide-risk trajectories, 4 implicit or internally inconsistent risk trajectories, and 4 non-suicidal high-distress controls. Each trajectory was evaluated under three context-presentation formats. The 24 model-trajectory combinations were treated as matched repeated-measures units nested within 8 independent risk-trajectory blocks. Primary contrasts were estimated using exact trajectory-level sign-flip tests and trajectory-block bootstrap confidence intervals. Turn-level outcomes were analyzed using multilevel mixed-effects models. Exploratory condition-by-model heterogeneity was assessed using a trajectory-blocked exact permutation sensitivity analysis, with a trajectory-clustered interaction model used only as a secondary asymptotic check. Results Timely appropriate intervention occurred in 10/24 isolated current-turn observations (41.7%), 21/24 reconstructed cumulative observations (87.5%), and 12/24 native continuous observations (50.0%). On average across the three systems, reconstructed cumulative presentation exceeded isolated input by 45.8 percentage points (95% trajectory-block bootstrap CI, 25.0 to 66.7; Holm-adjusted exact P = .031), whereas native continuous performance was 37.5 percentage points lower than reconstructed cumulative performance (95% trajectory-block bootstrap CI, −50.0 to −25.0; Holm-adjusted exact P = .031). Exploratory model-specific analyses indicated substantial heterogeneity: the native-versus-reconstructed contrast was largest for Doubao, smaller and statistically imprecise for Gemini, and absent for ChatGPT. Conclusions On average across the three evaluated systems, reconstructed cumulative user-only prompts outperformed native continuous conversations, although exploratory model-specific patterns were heterogeneous. Because the formats also differed in prompt reconstruction, information salience, message positioning, explicit integration instructions, and native conversation-state processing, the contrast cannot isolate the causal effect of prior model responses.
To handle the problem of resource scarcity and lack of personalization and adaptability in the traditional approach to mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) in dealing with college students with anxiety disorders, this study proposes the use of the natural language interface and adaptability properties of large language models (LLMs) to come up with an intelligent college-level MBCT intervention system. To begin with, the system functional requirements and the logic of the system intervention were explained in line with the fundamental ideas of MBCT and the cognitive features of students with anxiety. Second, it was created through a four-stage adaptive architecture that includes perception analysis, intervention, and feedback, providing a dynamic process for user status identification, personal generation of intervention plans, and real-time optimization of the intervention process. Finally, there was a randomized controlled trial whose subjects were 120 college students with anxiety who were separated into an experimental group and a control group. The effectiveness of the intervention was assessed using tools such as the Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), the Mindful Attention Awareness Scale (MAAS), and the Automatic Thoughts Questionnaire (ATQ). The findings indicated that the SAS score of the experimental group (38.26 ± 5.12) was significantly less than that of the control group (45.89 ± 6.34), the MAAS score (68.73 ± 7.25) was significantly higher than that of the control group (56.41 ± 8.13); and the ATQ score (42.15 ± 6.08) was significantly less than that of the control group. The study reveals that an adaptive MBCT system using large language models may be effective in reducing anxiety symptoms among college students, improving mindfulness, and enhancing cognitive processes, offering a new, readily available strategy for addressing anxiety in college students.
Contemporary debates about large language models (LLMs) remain shaped by the logical structure of Searle’s Chinese Room Argument (1980). Sceptics routinely argue that since LLMs merely manipulate statistical patterns without understanding the content they process, they possess no genuine understanding or mentality. This inferential pattern recapitulates Searle’s move from “the person in the room does not understand Chinese” to “running a program is insufficient for mentality”. This paper argues that this inference is illegitimate. It accepts Searle’s premise that the person in the Chinese Room does not understand Chinese. However, it shows that the person does understand something else: the rule system itself. This understanding is genuine and intrinsic by Searle’s own criteria, and it is acquired during the process of running the program. Searle’s argument therefore contains an unacknowledged inferential gap: from “no understanding of the processed content” to “no understanding whatsoever”. Furthermore, Searle’s structural equivalence premise, that the person and the computer are doing the same thing, is shown to constitute a double-edged sword: if consistently applied, it prevents Searle from denying that the machine may possess an analogue of the person’s understanding. The Chinese Room Argument cannot establish its intended conclusion.
Words and colors are intimately associated in humans, a sign of the close relationship between verbal, linguistic expression and cognition. Word-color association therefore plays an important role in areas of communication such as marketing and literature. Traditional efforts to build a general, scalable, and quantitative mapping of word-color association have often relied on surveys, experiencing difficulties in curating large-scale data sets, enrolling sufficient participants, and excising potential inherent researcher biases in the choice of the words and the colors to be mapped. Even the most recent computational efforts based on Large Language Models (LLMs) do not overcome these problems due to their near-complete lack of transparency in data and methodology that results in low confidence, consistency, and reliability. Here we propose a framework that overcomes these limitations via the use of freely accessible large-scale web image data, and fully transparent and reproducible methods that allow one to build color associations for almost any given word. We also showcase the methodology in action through analyses of color usage in corporate branding and 20th-century Anglo-American poetry. These show that our framework can help form new answers to and perspectives on long-standing questions in communication. Additionally, our framework by design can be readily adopted for use in any language supported by a web image search engine, and its code is freely available in open source; we therefore expect it to contribute towards achieving a universal, multilingual understanding of word-color association.
Three interconnected clusters of questions: 1. What sort of thing is an AI, how many of them are there, where are they and how long do they exist? 2. Is an AI the sort of thing that can have beliefs, desires and goals? 3. When we say to an LLM, “Your argument is confused”, what does that 'you' refer to? When it replies, “I'm sorry for the confused argument”, what does that 'I' refer to? In this paper, our focus is on reference and coreference: we approach 1 and 2 by first trying to answer 3. Three views are argued for. First, don't start with metaphysics or philosophy of mind-start with reference questions. Second, the practice of referring to LLMs is being engineered; it's unsettled and currently so vague that there's no fact of the matter about which of many candidates we're talking about. Third, what will make reference more determinate is a range of institutional factors: laws, regulations, authorizations and various practical arrangements. The answers don't come from the philosophy of mind or from metaphysics. They come from the institutions and practices we embed LLMs in.
Previous research has suggested that culturally mismatched interventions may cause resistance and reduce the effectiveness of music-based interventions. This pilot randomized exploratory study examined the implementation and preliminary outcomes of a music-based intervention incorporating large language model (LLM)-generated, culturally adapted verbal suggestions among Chinese undergraduate students. A total of 113 participants were randomly assigned to three multicomponent conditions: (1) Chinese film music accompanied by LLM-generated verbal suggestions involving Eastern imagery, (2) a standardized music therapy recording with conventional verbal guidance, or (3) piano music without verbal guidance. Following a 40-minute cognitively demanding task, participants completed pre- and post-intervention measures of state anxiety, positive and negative affect, and heart rate. Baseline-adjusted ANCOVAs showed no group differences in positive affect, F (2, 109) = 1.03, p = .360, η p 2 = .019, or state anxiety, F (2, 109) = 0.68, p = .511, η p 2 = .012. A significant group effect was found for negative affect, F (2, 109) = 4.60, p = .012, η p 2 = .078; the Eastern imagery group had lower adjusted post-intervention scores than both comparison groups (Holm-adjusted ps = .026). Heart rate also differed across groups, F (2, 109) = 10.56, p < .001, η p 2 = .162, with lower adjusted values in the standardized therapy group than in the other two groups. The findings identify potentially meaningful response patterns but do not establish efficacy or the independent effect of culturally adapted verbal suggestions because the conditions differed in musical material and duration. Larger, controlled trials are required. (ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT07359950).
(ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT07359950).
Large language models (LLMs) are rapidly reshaping digital mental health, yet how these systems are designed, used, and evaluated remains poorly characterized. We conducted an HCI-centered scoping review of 84 studies examining mental health tasks, stakeholders, interaction paradigms, foundation models, evaluation methods, and outcome measurement. Counseling and support and self-help and well-being accounted for 73.8% of studies, while clinician support and crisis and risk support remained uncommon. Mixed-methods user studies predominated (42.9%), with only three randomized controlled trials and eight studies classified as longitudinal or field evaluations. Technical and response performance was assessed in 81.0% of studies, compared with 29.8% assessing mental health symptoms and clinical outcomes and 7.1% including longitudinal follow-up. Outcome profiles differed across intended tasks. Building on these findings and established evaluation guidance, we propose a task-oriented framework aligning evaluation domains, measurement approaches, and assessment timing with intended use.
This study examines human–AI collaboration in Qur’anic interpretation by reconsidering the epistemological role of the mufassir within the emerging ecosystem of algorithmic religious knowledge. The development of generative artificial intelligence, particularly large language models (LLMs), has transformed how Qur’anic knowledge is accessed, produced, and disseminated. Although AI demonstrates significant capabilities in generating coherent interpretations, synthesizing information, and retrieving textual references, its outputs raise critical questions concerning interpretive authority, methodological validity, source reliability, and epistemic accountability. This study employs a qualitative approach with an analytical-comparative design to investigate the relationship between AI-generated interpretations and established classical and contemporary Qur’anic exegesis. Data are analyzed through three interconnected stages: AI interpretation generation, human critical evaluation, and exegetical validation. The study argues that AI should not be positioned as a replacement for the mufassir, but rather as a computational instrument that facilitates textual exploration, source retrieval, and interpretive synthesis. Accordingly, this research proposes the concept of Human-Centered Algorithmic Tafsir, which repositions the mufassir as an epistemic validator, contextualizer, curator, and ethical supervisor. This framework emphasizes that technological efficiency cannot independently establish interpretive legitimacy, as Qur’anic interpretation requires methodological competence, contextual awareness, and human responsibility.
The use of subjective reports and questionnaires to evaluate chronic pain, while the gold standard, conveys a limited scope of the patients’ experience and is burdensome. Here we demonstrate that large language models (LLMs) can evaluate patient-provided texts and automatically generate specific, clinically meaningful, and reliable scores for the sensory, affective, and social dimensions of chronic pain. LLMs can also generate assessor-dependent constructs such as agency and personal narrative.
This study aims to map the global development of Arabic language education research through a bibliometric analysis of publication trends, journal sources, contributing institutions, countries of corresponding authors, and the most-cited documents. It also analyses keyword co-occurrence to identify major research themes, emerging trends, and potential future directions. Data were collected from the Scopus database using a structured search query, resulting in 166 documents after a rigorous screening process. Prior to analysis, metadata were cleaned using OpenRefine to ensure consistency and accuracy by standardizing author names, institutional affiliations, and keyword variations. Bibliometric analysis was conducted using Biblioshiny (R) and VOSviewer. In the VOSviewer analysis, a thesaurus file was applied to standardize terminology and eliminate duplication, ensuring accurate thematic mapping. The findings indicate a significant increase in publications over the past decade, reflecting growing academic interest in Arabic language education. The results show a strong dominance of technology-oriented journals, particularly in artificial intelligence and natural language processing. Research productivity is concentrated in the Middle East, especially in Saudi Arabia and Egypt, although international collaboration is gradually increasing. Highly cited documents tend to focus on computational approaches and the development of linguistic resources, highlighting their central role in advancing the field. Thematic analysis reveals five major research clusters, including machine learning, pedagogy, computational linguistics, speech processing, and natural language processing. The evolution of research topics shows a shift from traditional teaching approaches to advanced technologies such as deep learning and large language models. These patterns indicate an increasing integration of pedagogical and technological perspectives in the field. Future research directions include the development of large-scale Arabic datasets, the integration of explainable artificial intelligence, adaptive learning systems, and ethical considerations in AI-based education. These findings provide empirical insights for researchers and policymakers to support evidence-based development in Arabic language education.

Mobile GUI Agents powered by multimodal large language models (MLLMs) show promise in human-computer intelligence. However, current research primarily focuses on reactive task execution while lacking a comprehensive “understanding-prediction-execution” process for user intentions, which are the core requirements of active agents. In this paper, we propose the Act2Intention framework that builds an active mobile agent by integrating understanding, predicting user intentions, and executing decisions. Firstly, we constructed the Act2Intention Bench through collection and validated generation, comprising 72,511 intentions and over 700,000 actions across 52 apps, thereby establishing the first benchmark for evaluating proactive agents via continuous “intention-actions” trajectories. We further develop the Act2Intention Agent, achieving proactive services through Proactive-oriented Intention Understanding, Personalized Proactive Intention Prediction, and Experience-guided Intention Execution. Experimental results show that supervised fine-tuning on Act2Intention Bench yields absolute improvements of +32.0 Acc-S, +10.25 Acc-S, and +6.9 SSR points over non-fine-tuned counterparts under the same agent framework for intention understanding, prediction, and execution, respectively. This success underscores the necessity and value of the Act2Intention Bench, which establishes a standardized platform for developing and evaluating proactive agents and consequently paves the way for research on intention-driven human-computer interaction. To facilitate further research, we open-source our code and Act2Intention Bench at: npuNancy/Act2Intention.
Researchers often want to measure a variety of constructs such as anxiety, discrimination, or loneliness in text data from surveys, interviews, social media, and electronic health records. Using large language models (LLMs)-although optimal for text classification-remain infeasible for some researchers due to concerns around computational expertise, cost, privacy, and compute requirements. Therefore, some researchers prefer to use lightweight models for large data sets or interpretable models to avoid mistakes in high-stakes scenarios. Lexicons offer simple baselines to LLMs by searching for relevant phrases and can be used together with LLMs to guarantee capturing specific keywords. However, building new lexicons is resource intensive. In this study, we found that GPT-4 Turbo was able to automatically create a lexicon for 49 known risk factors for suicidal thoughts and behaviors, which we release as the Suicide Risk Lexicon. Generating a lexicon with LLMs quickly measures most constructs relevant for suicide risk detection, resulting in high content validity. This lexicon was able to accurately predict risk in crisis counseling conversations. After validating the lexicon with clinician ratings, the lexicon modestly outperformed the linguistic inquiry and word count lexicon, which has low content validity for mental illness, and performed similarly to some black-box deep learning models. We discovered that active suicidal ideation and direct self-injury were stronger indicators of imminent risk than passive suicidal ideation and depressed mood in this ecological setting of crisis counseling conversations. To simplify creating new lexicons for other research domains, we introduce a Python package, construct-tracker. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2026 APA, all rights reserved).
Mental health is a growing global concern, prompting interest in AI-driven solutions to expand access to psychosocial support. Peer support , grounded in lived experience, offers a valuable complement to professional care. However, variability in training, effectiveness, and definitions raises concerns about quality, consistency, and safety. Large Language Models (LLMs) present new opportunities to enhance peer support interactions, particularly in real-time, text-based interactions. We present and evaluate an AI-supported system with an LLM-simulated distressed client ( SimClient ), context-sensitive LLM-generated suggestions ( Suggestions ), and real-time emotion visualisations. 2 mixed-methods studies with 12 peer supporters and 6 mental health professionals (i.e., experts) examined the system’s effectiveness and implications for practice. Both groups recognised its potential to enhance training and improve interaction quality. However, we found a key tension emerged: while peer supporters engaged meaningfully, experts consistently flagged critical issues in peer supporter responses, such as missed distress cues and premature advice-giving. This misalignment highlights potential limitations in current peer support training, especially in emotionally charged contexts where safety and fidelity to best practices are essential. Our findings underscore the need for standardised, psychologically grounded training, especially as peer support scales globally. They also demonstrate how LLM-supported systems can scaffold this development–if designed with care and guided by expert oversight. This work contributes to emerging conversations on responsible AI integration in mental health and the evolving role of LLMs in augmenting peer-delivered care.
Group decision-making often suffers from uneven information sharing, hindering decision quality. While large language models (LLMs) have been widely studied as aids for individuals, their potential to support groups of users, potentially as facilitators, is relatively underexplored. We present a pre-registered randomized experiment with 1,475 participants assigned to 281 live groups completing a hidden profile task—selecting an optimal city for a hypothetical sporting event—under one of four facilitation conditions: no facilitation, a one-time message prompting information sharing, a human facilitator, or an LLM (GPT-4o) facilitator. We find that LLM facilitation increased information shared within a discussion by raising the minimum level of engagement with the task among group members, and that these gains came at limited cost in terms of participants’ attitudes towards the task, their group, or their facilitator. Whether by human or AI, there was no significant effect of facilitation on the final decision outcome, suggesting that even substantial but partial increases in information sharing were insufficient to overcome the hidden profile effect studied. To support the design and evaluation of LLM-mediated group decision-making systems, we release our data and our experimental platform, the Group-AI Interaction Laboratory (GRAIL), as an open-source tool.
Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI), including large language models and large multimodal models, is increasingly used to support psychological assessment and digital mental health measurement. This review proposes a lifecycle framework for evaluating these uses without weakening psychometric standards. The framework covers construct definition; item, prompt, indicator, or signal generation; evaluation of content, response processes, usability, and data quality; piloting and calibration; validation; fairness and measurement invariance; scoring and interpretation; documentation; and post-deployment monitoring. We argue that digital traces from smartphones, chatbots, ecological momentary assessment, wearables, social media, clinical notes, and multimodal systems should not be treated as psychometric measures by default. They should remain raw data, candidate indicators, or algorithmic scores until their construct interpretation and intended use are theoretically specified, technically verified, empirically calibrated, and validated with human data. GenAI may help generate candidate items, refine wording, classify open-text responses, extract structured information, support multimodal integration, and assist scoring under explicit rules. These uses may improve efficiency and scale, but they do not establish validity, objectivity, fairness, or clinical meaning. We distinguish two complementary facets: GenAI for psychometrics, in which models support measurement development and scoring, and psychometrics for GenAI, in which psychometric methods evaluate model behavior when LLMs are part of measurement workflows. Key risks include construct drift, face validity without structural validity, compressed variability in synthetic respondents, algorithmic bias, lack of invariance, prompt sensitivity, model drift, automation bias, data-security and privacy failures, and loss of subjectivity and disagreement. Responsible use requires human oversight, transparent reporting, validation with human data, fairness evaluation, secure data governance, and continuous monitoring. GenAI should augment, not replace, psychometric science.
Large Language Models (LLMs) have demonstrated significant capabilities in generating human-like and contextually relevant responses across a wide range of applications. However, their reliability is affected not only by factual hallucinations but also by failures to correctly understand and follow user instructions. This emerging issue, referred to as intent hallucination, occurs when an LLM omits, misinterprets, or fails to satisfy one or more requirements contained in a user's request, even when the generated response may be factually correct.Such failures can reduce the reliability and usefulness of LLM-based systems, particularly in complex tasks involving multiple constraints. This paper proposes a systematic review of existing research on intent hallucination and instructionfollowing capabilities in Large Language Models. The study will examine major types and causes of instructionfollowing failures, existing benchmarks and evaluation techniques, methods for detecting such failures, and approaches proposed to mitigate them. The review will also compare current evaluation frameworks and investigate limitations in existing research, particularly concerning complex, multi-constraint, and dynamic user instructions.Based on the reviewed literature, the study aims to organize existing approaches into a structured taxonomy covering instruction-following failures, detection and evaluation methods, and mitigation strategies. Finally, the paper will highlight open research challenges and future directions for developing more reliable and intent-aligned LLM systems. The study aims to provide a consolidated understanding of intent hallucination and support future research toward more dependable human-AI interaction.
