Irja Rzepka; Ivo Dönnhoff; David Kindermann; Hans‐Christoph Friederich; Christoph Nikendei; Estella Alejandra Tambini Stollwerck Social Psychiatry and Psychiatric Epidemiology, 2026 https://doi.org/10.1007/s00127-026-03244-8

Abstract Purpose Forced migration increases vulnerability to exploitation. Globally, around 50 million people are affected by human trafficking, which often involves trauma with negative mental health effects. Forced migrants already face elevated risks of PTSD, depression, and anxiety, yet the specific association of trafficking on their mental health remains unclear. Methods Symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, anxiety, and overall stress were assessed using standardized screening instruments (PC-PTSD-5, PHQ-4, and the Distress Thermometer). Experiences of human trafficking were measured with a modified version of the Adult Human Trafficking Screening Tool (AHTST) among forced migrants in Germany. Missing data were handled using multiple imputation. Logistic regression analyses were conducted to examine the association between human trafficking and positive screenings for the respective mental health conditions. Results A total of N = 1108 forced migrants participated in the study. Depending on the imputation model, between 49% and 56% of all participants screened positive for PTSD, 60% to 71% for depression, and 41% to 52% for an anxiety disorder. Among participants who screened positive for these mental health conditions, a positive screen for human trafficking was associated with a 30–40% higher probability of screening positive for PTSD and a 15% to 20% higher probability of screening positive for depression or anxiety disorder. Conclusions Forced migrants with a history of human trafficking are at elevated risk for PTSD, depression, and anxiety than those without, underscoring the need for early identification and tailored psychosocial support.

Paulina Želvienė; Agnietė Kairytė; Ema Pakeltytė; Evaldas Kazlauskas European Journal of Psychotraumatology, 2026, Vol. 17, Issue 1, pp. 2726598 https://doi.org/10.1080/20008066.2026.2726598

Background: Previous studies have investigated the levels of distress reported by children and adolescents while participating in trauma-focused research. However, the role of complex PTSD in responses to participation in trauma-focused research is unknown. The aim of the study was to investigate adolescents’ positive and negative reactions to trauma-focused research and their associations with lifetime trauma exposure, PTSD, and complex PTSD.Methods: The sample comprised 834 school-based adolescents (40.9% boys), aged 13–18 years (M = 16.17, SD = 1.34) from the general population. Lifetime trauma exposure was measured using the Child and Adolescent Trauma Screen (CATS); PTSD and complex PTSD were measured with the Child and Adolescent version of the International Trauma Questionnaire (ITQ-CA). Positive and negative responses to research were measured with the short version of the Reactions to Research Participation Questionnaire for Children (RRPQ-C).Results: Most adolescents reported neutral or positive reactions to participation: 73.4% did not feel upset or sad, 81.4% did not regret participating, 34.3% reported being glad about participating, and 61.0% felt good about helping. 6.6% reported feeling upset. Lifetime trauma exposure was reported by 74.5% of participants (M = 2.18, SD = 2.18); 6.8% met criteria for PTSD, and 13.1% for complex PTSD. Lifetime trauma exposure, PTSD, and complex PTSD were associated with feeling upset or sad, as well as being glad to participate. PTSD increased the odds of negative reactions to research 2.07 times, and complex PTSD 5.78 times. On the other hand, 42.2% of those with complex PTSD reported being glad they had participated. Conclusions: Adolescents generally responded positively to participating in the study. However, complex PTSD was associated with a higher likelihood of research-related distress, highlighting the need for tailored safety and risk protocols for adolescents with complex PTSD.

Background The International Trauma Questionnaire (ITQ) is a widely used self-report measure of PTSD and Complex PTSD (CPTSD). ‘Clinical checks’ – brief follow up questions verifying respondent comprehension of the symptom item – have recently been developed for the ITQ to reduce false-positive diagnostic cases. This study tested whether the ITQ with clinical checks generates psychometrically sound scores and adds clinically relevant information to standard symptom assessment. Methods Data ( N = 5,070) were collected using quota-based sampling procedures from adults living in five European countries (Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, Romania, and Slovakia). Results Overall, 82.2% of respondents were trauma-exposed, and 19.2% met diagnostic requirements for PTSD (7.2%) or CPTSD (12.0%) on the standard ITQ. With clinical checks, these fell to 9.8% overall, 3.9% for PTSD, and 5.9% for CPTSD. The ITQ with clinical checks produced scores with excellent factorial validity, internal reliability, and latent classes corresponding to PTSD and CPTSD. Associations with clinically relevant variables including suicidality and anxiety-depression symptoms were stronger with than without the clinical checks. Females, those with more extensive trauma histories, and higher concurrent anxiety-depression symptoms were more likely to retain than lose their diagnostic status when the clinical checks were used. Conclusions The ITQ with clinical checks generated scores with excellent psychometric properties, captured additional clinically relevant information, and yielded more plausible prevalence estimates compared to the standard ITQ scores. The potential value and limitations of using clinical checks in self-report questionnaires are discussed.

Systematic review and meta-analysis: the effectiveness of cognitive behavioral therapy and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing in children and adolescents

Irada Meoon; Aungsana Khlaisuk; Siriyupa Nansunanon; Teerapon Dhippayom European Journal of Psychotraumatology, 2026, Vol. 17, Issue 1, pp. 2731855 https://doi.org/10.1080/20008066.2026.2731855

Background: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is prevalent among children and adolescents, with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) widely used treatment options. This study compared the effects of CBT and EMDR in children and adolescents using a meta-analysis approach. Methods: PubMed, EMBASE, CENTRAL, CINAHL, ProQuest Dissertations & Theses, and PsycInfo were searched in March 2025. Randomized controlled trials that compared the effectiveness of CBT and EMDR on PTSD symptoms in children and adolescents aged 6–18 years who had been exposed to traumatic events were included. The Cochrane Risk of Bias version 2 was used to assess the methodological quality of the included studies. A random-effects model was applied to calculate the standardized mean difference (SMD) along with 95% confidence interval (CI), and the I2 statistic was used to quantify statistical heterogeneity. Results: Five trials (248 participants) were included. There was no statistically significant difference in PTSD symptoms between the CBT and EMDR groups, whether reported by children (SMD: 0.18; 95% CI: –0.07–0.43; I2 = 0%) or by parents (SMD: 0.23; 95% CI: –0.02–0.48; I2 = 0%). For anxiety, the pooled estimate did not reach statistical significance (SMD: 0.44; 95% CI: –0.19–1.07; I2 = 69%). Depression symptoms were higher in the CBT group than in the EMDR group (SMD: 0.44; 95% CI: 0.13–0.76; I2 = 0%).Conclusion: The comparative effects of CBT and EMDR in reducing PTSD and anxiety symptoms remain inconclusive. Although CBT was associated with higher depression symptoms compared with EMDR, the current evidence is based on a small number of trials, and the pooled estimates should be interpreted with caution.

Post-traumatic stress disorder: outline and updated insights focusing on occupational factors

Lea S. Lewandrowski; Doris Klingelhöfer; Dörthe Brüggmann; David Alexander Groneberg Journal of Occupational Medicine and Toxicology, 2026, Vol. 21, Issue 1 https://doi.org/10.1186/s12995-026-00530-8

BACKGROUND: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a stress-related disorder associated with substantial psychological distress and functional impairment, and it carries major relevance for occupational health because it frequently follows traumatic exposure in both high-risk professions and occupations not traditionally classified as high risk. This narrative review focuses on occupational risk factors, prevalence, work capacity, and implications for workers' compensation and return to work. METHODS: A non-systematic (narrative) literature search was conducted in PubMed/MEDLINE and Google Scholar for English- and German-language articles, with supplementary hand-searching of reference lists and institutional/guideline sources (e.g., WHO, AWMF). No protocol was registered, consistent with conventions for narrative reviews. Reporting follows the general principles of the Scale for the Assessment of Narrative Review Articles (SANRA), the checklist commonly used to appraise this review type, rather than PRISMA, which applies to systematic reviews. RESULTS: Occupational risk is particularly elevated in military service (including soldiers and veterans), public safety and disaster management, and occupations with structurally frequent severe incidents (e.g., transport, construction, industrial production), while unpredictable bystander events can also trigger PTSD in occupations not traditionally classified as high risk settings. Risk is shaped by trauma type, severity, and recurrence, as well as pre-traumatic, peri-traumatic, and post-traumatic factors. Prevalence varies substantially by context and is not directly comparable across studies, which differ markedly in population, exposure severity, diagnostic method, and assessment period. With this caveat, particularly high burden is reported in conflict-affected populations, healthcare workers during the COVID-19 pandemic, and trauma-exposed occupational groups such as military personnel, police officers, paramedics, train drivers, construction workers and industrial workers. Established treatments (trauma-focused psychotherapy, with pharmacotherapy as an adjunct) are distinct from early post-event interventions such as screening and Psychological First Aid, which aim to prevent chronicity rather than treat established illness. Routine single-session debriefing is not supported by the evidence. Occupational medicine must also address work capacity, return to work, compensation, and rehabilitation, since symptomatic improvement does not necessarily restore functional ability. CONCLUSION: Stronger workplace prevention, early screening after traumatic exposure, organizational support, and clearer compensation and return-to-work pathways are needed to reduce the long-term occupational consequences of PTSD. Evidence specifically comparing treatment of occupational versus non-occupational PTSD remains limited, and prevalence estimates should be interpreted in light of substantial heterogeneity across the underlying studies.

Attachment Styles and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Among Trauma-Exposed Older Adults: Evidence From a non-Western Context

Nermien Alshraifin; Nedal Alshraifin; Hardwa Mohammad Alsharari North American journal of psychology, 2026, Vol. 28, Issue 4 https://doi.org/10.65696/001c.171158

This study aimed to examine the relationship between post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and attachment styles among older adults exposed to traumatic events. A descriptive–correlational design was employed using a stratified random sample of 534 participants from Irbid Governorate, Jordan. The study makes three key contributions to the literature by addressing the underrepresentation of elderly populations in trauma research, particularly within non-Western and Arab contexts. Data were collected using validated measures of PTSD and attachment styles. The findings indicated that PTSD symptoms and attachment styles were present at moderate levels. Anxious attachment was the most prevalent style, followed by avoidant and secure attachment. Correlation analysis revealed that secure attachment was negatively associated with PTSD, whereas anxious and avoidant attachment styles showed significant positive associations with PTSD symptoms. These findings highlight the dual role of attachment styles as both protective and risk factors in trauma-related outcomes. The results underscore the importance of developing culturally sensitive interventions that enhance secure attachment, strengthen social support, and improve emotional regulation among older adults. The study provides valuable cross-cultural evidence that contributes to the global understanding of PTSD and attachment processes in later life

School belonging moderates the relationship between childhood trauma and psychopathology in adolescence

Lucinda Grummitt; Sasha Bailey; Kirsty Rowlinson; Isobel Ivison; Louise Birrell; An Nguyen; … Journal of Applied Developmental Psychology, 2026, Vol. 107, pp. 102009 https://doi.org/10.1016/j.appdev.2026.102009

Objectives This study examined whether school belonging moderates associations between childhood trauma and internalising and externalising mental health symptoms among Australian adolescents. Methods Data came from baseline of a school-based prevention program trial in 9 Australian schools. Participants were 750 students (Mage = 13.8 years; 60.4% male; 36.9% female; 91.3% Australian-born). In 2023, students completed self-report measures of lifetime trauma, school belonging, anxiety and depressive symptoms, conduct problems, and hyperactivity. Linear mixed-effects models tested interactions between trauma and school belonging, adjusting for school clustering, age, and gender. Results Trauma exposure and greater number of traumatic events were associated with lower school belonging and higher symptoms across all domains. School belonging moderated associations between trauma and depression and anxiety, and between number of traumatic events and depression, anxiety, and conduct problems, but not hyperactivity. Conclusion Higher school belonging buffered symptoms of depression, anxiety, and conduct problems, underscoring the importance of school environments.
