Abstract Amid growing calls for Australian universities to engage meaningfully with Indigenous knowledges, this article examines how Indigenous-led, place-based inquiry can reorient academic practice toward culturally regenerative possibilities. Drawing on a Cooperative Inquiry conducted with Whadjuk Noongar Boodjar, we follow six Noongar-led experiences involving Country, language, ceremony, deep time, embodiment and more-than-human relations. Through cycles of experiential, presentational and reflective practice, these engagements restructured attention, temporality and conduct, foregrounding relational ethics of permission, reciprocity and refusal. Multimodal forms including movement, image and creative response were treated as epistemic practices, enabling us to register affective and relational reorientations that are not readily accessible through propositional forms alone. Our analysis traces how these reorientations unsettled extractive research habits and repositioned knowledge-making as embodied, participatory and accountable to Country. We argue that culturally regenerative university practice does not emerge through policy statements, curricular add-ons or inclusion alone, but through lived, relational engagements that reconfigure how knowledge is generated, held and shared. The study contributes empirical insight into how such reconfigurations unfold in practice and highlights the institutional conditions required to sustain accountable relationships with place.

INFLUENCE OF SOCIAL PRACTICES OF THE BAKA PEOPLE ON THE IMPLEMENTATION OF GEOGRAPHY CURRICULUM IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN THE EAST REGION OF CAMEROON

Esamazo Walters Azee; Yaro Loveline; Frida M. Mbounda International Journal of Developmental Issues in Education and Humanities, 2026, Vol. 02, Issue 04 https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.23478527

Abstract The Baka people, an indigenous forest community in Cameroon's East Region, hold a distinct body of social practices, ecological knowledge, and cultural values shaped by their historical relationship with the forest environment. This study examines the influence of social practices of the Baka people on the implementation of the geography curriculum in schools within the East Region of Cameroon. The study adopted a mixed-methods research design, combining quantitative and qualitative approaches. The target population comprised of Geography teachers and students especially Baka students enrolled in secondary schools in selected Baka community of the East region in the study area. Two instruments were used to collect data which were questionnaires and interview guides. Quantitative data obtained from the questionnaires were coded and analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Descriptive statistics included frequencies, percentages, means and standard deviations. These statistics were used to describe the prevalence of particular Baka social practices and participants' perceptions of their influence on Geography curriculum implementation. Inferential analysis was used to examine relationships between selected dimensions of Baka social practices and indicators of curriculum implementation. The findings indicate that Baka social practices have significant implications for curriculum implementation, although their influence should not be understood exclusively in negative terms. Baka livelihood practices, language, cultural values, traditional learning processes and Indigenous environmental knowledge interact with formal schooling in complex ways. Some practices may contribute to irregular attendance or difficulties in adapting to conventional classroom routines, while others provide valuable knowledge and experiences that can enrich Geography education. The study contributes to broader debates on curriculum relevance, indigenous knowledge integration, and educational equity for marginalized populations in Cameroon, and offers recommendations for curriculum policy and teacher training that better reflect the sociocultural realities of indigenous learners. Based on the findings, the researcher recommends that Geography teachers should incorporate local examples into classroom instruction. Lessons on ecosystems, natural resources, agriculture, environmental conservation, settlement and human–environment relationships should make use of geographical features and activities familiar to Baka learners. Teacher-training institutions should strengthen preparation in culturally responsive pedagogy. Curriculum developers should provide greater flexibility for the inclusion of Indigenous and local knowledge. schools should make greater use of experiential learning. Keywords Baka people, social practices, curriculum implementation, geography education, indigenous knowledge, East Region Cameroon

Land, culture, voice, and economics: an Indigenous land based framework for STEM and agricultural education

Quintana M. Clark; Olivia Perez; Jennifer L. Freeman Frontiers in Education, 2026, Vol. 11 https://doi.org/10.3389/feduc.2026.1877168

As Tribal Nations explore emerging opportunities in bio-based economies, hemp education offers a meaningful platform for integrating land stewardship, cultural knowledge, community priorities, and workforce development. Yet existing science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) and agricultural education models rarely provide culturally grounded approaches that integrate Indigenous epistemologies, land-based pedagogy, and sovereignty-centered economic development. This article introduces a conceptual Indigenous land-based curriculum framework for culturally grounded STEM and agricultural education, using hemp education as an applied and relational learning context. Grounded in Indigenous research methodologies and guided by a Two-Eyed Seeing orientation, the framework was developed through qualitative conceptual inquiry and iterative synthesis of scholarship on Indigenous epistemologies, culturally grounded STEM education, land-based learning, and community-centered economic development. Centered on Land, Culture, Voice, and Economics as foundational dimensions of curriculum design, the model is represented through a flower metaphor that emphasizes holistic, experiential, place-based, community-based, and intergenerational learning. Indigenous values of reciprocity, relationality, responsibility, and respect further shape how teaching and learning are enacted within the framework. By articulating a cohesive pedagogical structure that bridges Indigenous knowledge systems, applied STEM learning, and sustainable bio-based economic futures, the article offers a conceptual model for designing culturally grounded curricula, advances scholarship on Indigenous land-based curriculum design, and provides a foundation for future curriculum development and research.

Reimagining African leadership models for peace education and epistemically just knowledge systems in higher education

Sulaimon Adewale; Ntokozo Dennis Ndwandwe Discover Education, 2026, Vol. 5, Issue 1 https://doi.org/10.1007/s44217-026-02234-x

This study examines how Indigenous African leadership philosophies, particularly Ubuntu and participatory governance models, can transform higher education institutions into sites of peace education and epistemic justice. It responds to the enduring marginalisation of Indigenous Knowledge Systems within African universities. A qualitative comparative institutional analysis design, underpinned by document-based research, was adopted. The study analysed 67 institutional documents from universities in Rwanda, South Africa, and Ghana. Rwanda’s post-genocide education reforms served as a critical embedded case. This offered insights into context-driven educational transformation. Eurocentric leadership structures remain deeply embedded across the cases, perpetuating epistemic injustice. Yet pockets of Afrocentric innovation are emerging. For instance, governance restructures in Rwanda incorporate restorative justice principles, gender equity initiatives are evident in South Africa, and curriculum reviews in Ghana propose Indigenous Knowledge Systems integration. Evidence from these institutional documents points to a gradual shift toward locally grounded leadership. Student movements like #RhodesMustFall further reveal how institutional hierarchies are being contested. The study proposes an epistemically just leadership framework, anchored in participatory governance, Ubuntu-informed pedagogy, and restorative policies. By centring Indigenous Knowledge Systems and African philosophical traditions, this research contributes to broader efforts toward epistemic justice, social cohesion, and the transformation of post-colonial institutions. It positions leadership transformation as foundational, not peripheral, to broader decolonisation efforts in African higher education.

Reimagining rural STEM by integrating traditional agricultural knowledge into engineering design practices through culturally responsive approaches

Rif’ati Dina Handayani; Triyanto; Nila Mutia Dewi; Sutarto Discover Education, 2026, Vol. 5, Issue 1 https://doi.org/10.1007/s44217-026-02266-3

STEM education often marginalizes rural students by privileging urban-centric engineering standards and forms of technical representation. This study investigates how traditional agricultural knowledge can be translated into engineering design learning through a Culturally Responsive STEM (CR-STEM) approach in rural classrooms. Using a qualitative case study design, data were collected from 12 tenth-grade students through classroom observations, design activities, and student-generated artifacts during an engineering project. A six-phase thematic analysis revealed that integrating agricultural knowledge enabled students to transform everyday experiences into functional engineering strategies. Instead of relying on conventional two-dimensional technical drawings, students demonstrated sophisticated problem-solving through direct hands-on experimentation, material adaptation, and the adaptive use of locally available resources. However, the findings also revealed a pedagogical tension stemming from a disconnect between students’ practical skills and formal communication. While students demonstrated strong physical engineering competence during construction, they struggled with formal technical drawing and academic presentation, which constrained their ability to articulate and formalize their design reasoning. These findings suggest that culturally responsive STEM education should support students in translating tacit local expertise into formal engineering representations. The study contributes to discussions on equitable STEM education by proposing alternative approaches to recognizing and assessing rural engineering competencies in culturally diverse learning contexts.

Weeds as teachers on country: Management through seasonal story calendars

Crystal Arnold Global Environmental Change, 2026, Vol. 101, pp. 103243 https://doi.org/10.1016/j.gloenvcha.2026.103243

This paper reconceptualises weeds through Australian Indigenous knowledge systems, presenting them not as invasive threats, but as teachers; living beings that offer ecological insight, support restoration, and contribute to cultural renewal and resurgence. Drawing on relational governance theories, the study employs Indigenous methodologies, including yarning with Country and the development of a storying seasonal calendar, to examine the behaviours and teachings of Fireweed (Senecio madagascariensis), African Lovegrass (Eragrostis curvula ), and Lantana (Lantana camara). Through attentive engagement with these plants across the seasons, the research reveals how each species responds to ecological disturbance in ways that reflect deeper patterns of damage, resilience, and adaptation. Fireweed emerges as a guard of soil exhaustion and overgrazing, while African Lovegrass plays a stabilising role in degraded landscapes during ecological transitions, and Lantana offers both refuge and warning through a chemically mediated defence of disturbed ground. These findings unsettle adversarial and militaristic paradigms of weed management and instead highlight the importance of Country-centred, seasonal, and relational approaches. By weaving Indigenous knowledge with ecological observation, the paper demonstrates that weeds are not only invasive but also teachers, whose messages can guide more ethical and restorative forms of environmental governance. • Weeds can be ecological indicators and teachers for landscape governance. • Introduces Weed Seasonal Story Calendars as a place-based methodology. • Challenges conventional eradication models via relational repair frameworks. • Grounds multispecies justice in Indigenous Knowledge Systems.

Hegemonic articulation, paradigm incommensurability, and the discursive exclusion of Humanities and Social Science Research in the South African Open Science Policy 2026

Nyna Amin; Donrich Willem Thaldar; Janet Oriel Bruce-Brand; Siyabonga Dlamini; Wayne Hugo; Lucinda Kok; … Humanities and Social Sciences Communications, 2026 https://doi.org/10.1057/s41599-026-09187-4

The South African Open Science Policy 2026, published by the Department of Science, Technology, and Innovation, is formally committed to the democratisation of knowledge and epistemic equity. Yet a critical reading reveals that the Policy reproduces, through its own discursive architecture, the epistemological hierarchy it claims to dismantle. This article analyses the Policy as a discursive text, drawing on Laclau and Mouffe’s discourse theory and Foucault’s concept of the regime of truth to explain how a policy committed to democratisation can simultaneously enact epistemic exclusion. The primary argument is threefold. First, the Policy constructs “Open Science” as a nodal point around which a chain of equivalences is built from STEM-derived norms, including reproducibility, FAIR data principles, journal metrics, and natural science models of citizen science. Second, we argue that this hegemonic articulation reconstitutes a hidden antagonism between positivist and interpretivist epistemological traditions, reawakening a binary opposition that the paradigm wars of the twentieth century had ostensibly resolved. Third, the incommensurability between these traditions means that applying STEM-derived criteria universally to all research constitutes not evaluation but category error institutionalised as governance. Six dimensions of epistemological closure are examined: the reproducibility criterion, the FAIR data mandate, the marginalisation of CARE principles, the protective rather than epistemic treatment of indigenous knowledge, the structural absence of humanistic output forms, and the natural-science-centred design of the citizen science framework and its consequences for participatory research traditions. Five policy interventions are proposed through which the Policy’s stated commitment to epistemic equity could be made operational across the full disciplinary spectrum.
