Introduction Research on associations between pornography viewing and sexual violence has been limited by the absence of validated instruments that differentiate exposure along a violence continuum within pornographic practices, with existing measures focused on consumption frequency or problematic patterns rather than on the specific content consumed. The Pornography Violence Exposure Scale (PVES) was developed to assess exposure to pornographic content graded across three violence levels: non-violent material and domination-without-pain (Level 1), coercive content (Level 2), and explicit physical aggression (Level 3). Methods A cross-sectional study with 2,181 Spanish young adults aged 18–35 years who reported viewing pornography examined factor structure, measurement invariance across sex and age, convergent, nomological, and incremental validity, and discriminative capacity for sexual violence outcomes via Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) analysis. Results A bifactor model demonstrated good fit (CFI = 0.978, TLI = 0.957, RMSEA = 0.076), with a dominant general factor (ωH = 0.84, ECV = 0.81) capturing graded exposure to violent content. Strict measurement invariance was supported across sex and age groups. Convergent correlations with sexual violence outcomes (mean | r | = 0.24) substantially exceeded near-zero nomological associations with sexual function and partner-evaluation indicators (mean |r| = 0.03), and the general factor produced significant incremental validity for both victimization (Δ R 2 = 0.088) and perpetration (Δ R 2 = 0.200), with acceptable discrimination for perpetration (AUC = 0.753). Discussion The PVES is the first psychometrically validated instrument for measuring differentiated exposure to violent pornographic content, enabling more precise investigation of content-specific associations with sexual violence outcomes.

BACKGROUND: There is limited research on how neighbourhoods influence harsh and abusive parenting practices in the home, particularly in low and middle-income countries. OBJECTIVE: We investigated associations between caregiver-perceived neighbourhood characteristics (community violence and social cohesion) and later harsh parenting practices. Additionally, we examined whether higher levels of social cohesion would mitigate the association between neighbourhood violence and harsh parenting. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Data came from 3731 child-mother dyads enrolled in the 2015 Pelotas (Brazil) Birth Cohort Study. METHODS: Neighbourhood contexts were assessed when children were age 4 years and included caregiver perceptions of violence occurrence in the neighbourhood in the past six months (fights with weapons, fights between gangs, robbery and sexual violence) and perceived neighbourhood social cohesion. Harsh parenting was measured using the parent-report version of the Parent-Child Conflict Tactics Scale at age 6-7 years. Negative binomial regression analyses were performed to estimate associations. Adjusted models included mutual adjustment for neighbourhood violence and social cohesion, as well as sociodemographic confounders. An interaction between neighbourhood violence and social cohesion in predicting harsh parenting was tested. RESULTS: After adjusting for confounders, higher violence in the neighbourhood and lower perceived neighbourhood social cohesion were associated with later harsh parenting practices (IRR = 1.05; 95% CI: 1.02 to 1.07 and IRR = 1.04; 95% CI: 1.01 to 1.06, respectively). There was no evidence that social cohesion moderated the relationship between violence in the neighbourhood and harsh parenting. CONCLUSIONS: The findings suggest that interventions to tackle community violence and to increase social cohesion have the potential to decrease parental harsh parenting in independent ways.

Abstract This paper examines trauma as a psychological wound that can affect memory, identity, behaviour, relationships, and the individual's sense of safety. It focuses particularly on childhood trauma, maternal abandonment, dissociation, repression, traumatic memory, repetition, sexual violence, and the struggle to return to a sense of wholeness. Drawing on the ideas of Revital Goodman, Sigmund Freud, Susan L. Bloom, Cathy Caruth, George Hartman, Sándor Ferenczi, Jay B. Frankel, and Kali Tal, the paper considers how traumatic experiences can remain active long after the original event has ended. It argues that childhood trauma is especially significant because it can shape the developing sense of self and influence how individuals respond to later experiences. Maternal care is considered an important source of security, while parental failure and abandonment can leave the child vulnerable to further trauma. The paper also examines dissociation as a protective response to overwhelming experiences and explores how repressed memories may return through repetition, flashbacks, behaviour, and storytelling. The idea of a Sisyphean cycle is used to describe the repeated struggle of the trauma survivor to escape the past while continually returning to it. Particular attention is given to sexual violence and the experiences of women, especially African American women, whose psychological wounds may be intensified by racial and social oppression. The paper concludes that trauma may fragment the psyche, but remembering, narrating, and confronting painful experiences can also become part of the movement towards healing and psychological reintegration. Keywords: trauma, childhood trauma, maternal abandonment, dissociation, fragmented psyche, memory, repression, repetition, sexual violence, African American women, healing
