Bilge Hakan Şen; Aslıhan Yekeler; Duygu Kürklü Arpaçay; Jülide OCAK; Oğuzhan Akkoçan BMC Medical Education, 2026 https://doi.org/10.1186/s12909-026-10746-1

Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly used in dental education, but research has focused mainly on answer accuracy. Whether LLMs can identify the cognitive demand of examination items remains unclear. This study evaluated LLM classification fidelity for endodontic multiple-choice questions (MCQs) across three educational taxonomies and compared four publicly accessible models. Two hundred endodontic MCQs from the Turkish Dentistry Specialty Examination (DUS, 2012–2025) were classified by ChatGPT, Gemini, Kimi, and DeepSeek according to Revised Bloom’s Taxonomy, the SOLO Taxonomy, and Miller’s Pyramid. A three-layer expert consensus procedure comprising calibration training, procedural audit, and structured joint deliberation established the expert consensus reference standard. Agreement was assessed using weighted Cohen’s kappa (κw) with bootstrap 95% confidence intervals; classification performance was evaluated using accuracy and macro-averaged F1. Inter-model differences in item-level accuracy were tested using Cochran’s Q with Kendall’s W, followed by Holm–Bonferroni-corrected pairwise McNemar tests. For Revised Bloom’s Taxonomy, Gemini (κw=0.676) and DeepSeek (κw=0.667) achieved substantial agreement, while Kimi (κw=0.428) and ChatGPT (κw=0.365) performed lower. For SOLO, Gemini achieved substantial agreement (κw=0.622), while the remaining models showed moderate agreement. For Miller’s Pyramid, agreement did not exceed fair, with ChatGPT highest (κw=0.372). Inter-model differences were significant for all three taxonomies (all p<0.001). ChatGPT ranked lowest for Revised Bloom and SOLO but highest for Miller. Revised Bloom levels of expert consensus reference standard increased significantly across examination years (Spearman ρ=0.301, p<0.001). LLMs showed meaningful classification fidelity for Revised Bloom and SOLO taxonomies, particularly Gemini and DeepSeek, but performance for Miller’s Pyramid remained weak. Bloom, SOLO, and Miller should not be treated as interchangeable frameworks, and LLM selection should be tailored to the taxonomy and assessment purpose. Answer accuracy and taxonomy classification fidelity represent distinct capabilities that warrant independent evaluation.

Ujwala S. Shetty; Haneesh Kiran PT; Pramod Machani; Alok Misra; Ratna Rachel Ponraj Archives of Dental and Medical Sciences, 2026 https://doi.org/10.71354/pbgs5r77

Background/Aim: Ageism can influence the quality of geriatric dental care, yet evidence among dental students remains inconsistent across cohorts. This study compares ageism between students at two institutions within the same district sharing identical training requirements and evaluated the questionnaire's internal consistency. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, the 15-item, six-component ageism questionnaire was administered online to 100 undergraduate dental students (65 from Institution 1; 35 from Institution 2). Internal consistency was measured using Cronbach's alpha; Welch's t-tests compared institutions, with a Bonferroni-adjusted significance level ≤ 0.008 for the six component comparisons. Results: The mean total score was 48.81 (SD 5.83). Overall internal consistency was weak (α = 0.521). The total score did not differ significantly between institutions (48.58 vs. 49.23; t (54.12) = 0.48, p = 0.634), and no component difference was observed with Bonferroni adjustment. Conclusions: Ageist attitudes did not differ between institutions, but the questionnaire's weak overall reliability limits interpretation. Larger samples, confirmatory factor analysis, and testing of measurement invariance are warranted.

Farheen Masood Pakistan Armed Forces Medical Journal, 2026, Vol. 76, Issue 5, pp. 725-729 https://doi.org/10.51253/pafmj.v76i5.12560

Objective: to analyse the effect of Flipped classroom with the use of 3D atlas as a positive impact on the active learning of anatomy in undergraduate dental students. Study Design: Quasi-Experimental study. Place and Duration of Study: Margalla Institute of Health Sciences, Rawalpindi, Pakistan from Aug to Sep 2023. Methodology: There were 75 first-year BDS students who were randomly assigned to one of two Groups (4 were excluded): one Group got the standard classroom instruction (n=35), and the other Group got the flipped classroom with 3D atlas (n=36). Prior to the classes, there was a pre-quiz, and afterwards, there was a post-quiz. Final evaluation was based on 25 multiple-choice questions. We compared the scores from each Group. In order to assess views and experiences, a questionnaire with a 5-point Likert scale was utilised. Results; Out of seventy-five students, four students were absent, therefore, they were excluded from the study. Forty-one (57.7%) students had less or equal to 12 marks or fail in pretest while in after test ten (27.0%) students failed. Moreover, 25 (35.2%) students had 13 to 16 marks in pretest and 5(13.5%) had 13 to 16 marks in posttest. Furthermore, only 5(7.0%) Students had >16 marks in pretest whereas after flipped class, 22(59.5%) Students scored >16 which is significantly increased as p-value <0.001. Conclusion: This study demonstrates that flipped classrooms are successful for teaching anatomy, since they led to a small but statistically significant increase in the number of students passing.

The role of digital twin technology in transforming medical education: a scoping review

Sogand Sarmadi; Akbar Zare‐Kaseb; Neda Sanaie; Shabnam Shariatpanahi; Mahsa Boozari Pour npj Digital Medicine, 2026 https://doi.org/10.1038/s41746-026-03263-4

This scoping review mapped the current landscape of digital twin applications in health professions education and identified gaps in the evidence. The review followed Joanna Briggs Institute methodology and PRISMA-ScR reporting guidelines. Six bibliographic databases (MEDLINE via PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, CINAHL, and IEEE Xplore) were searched from inception to March 10, 2026, supplemented by a register search (ClinicalTrials.gov) and a search of Google Scholar as an additional source. Studies describing the development, implementation, or evaluation of digital twins in health professions education were included. Data were extracted using a standardized charting form, and methodological quality was assessed with appropriate JBI critical appraisal tools. Findings were subsequently reviewed in a one-round modified Delphi consultation with stakeholders. Seventeen studies published between 2022 and 2025 met the inclusion criteria. Because three publications report the same critical care platform, these 17 reports describe 15 distinct systems. Digital twins were applied at patient-, organ-, device-, and environment- or institutional-levels across surgery, critical care, anatomy, radiology, and dentistry. Each included system was verified against three defining characteristics of digital twins: personalization, a counterpart-derived data pathway, and generative or predictive capability. Four studies satisfied all three, eight satisfied two, four satisfied one, and one proposed all three without implementing any; only a single study reported continuous closed-loop bidirectional synchronization between a physical and a virtual counterpart. Most studies were technical reports or proof-of-concept demonstrations, and no controlled educational trials were identified. Evaluations focused primarily on learner perceptions and satisfaction, whereas only one study reported quantitative learning outcomes. No study assessed behavioral transfer to clinical practice or patient-level outcomes. Digital twin technology in health professions education is, therefore, best characterized as an active area of technical development that remains educationally unvalidated. The principal contribution of this review is a structured map of what has been built, how it has been verified against the digital twin construct, and precisely where educational evidence is absent. Future research should emphasize theory-informed development, rigorous experimental designs, and validated educational outcomes to determine the educational value of these approaches.

Reimagining mentorship in competency-based dental education: An AI-enabled mentoring network framework

Vivek Kumar Bains; Prashant Kumar Singh; Shruti Singh; Devika Bhat; Sreenivasan Venkatraman; Rhythm Bains Journal of Healthcare Research and Education, 2026, Vol. 2, pp. 16 https://doi.org/10.25259/jhre_20_2026

Mentoring is increasingly recognized as a critical determinant of academic achievement, professional identity formation, career advancement, and well-being in health professions education. Conventional mentor-mentee models, typically centered on a single assigned faculty mentor, may be inadequate to address the diverse and evolving needs of contemporary dental learners and early-career faculty. The transition towards competency-based dental education (CBDE) under emerging National Dental Commission (NDC) reforms further underscores the need to enhance mentoring approaches that support competency attainment, reflective practice, research engagement, and career development. Recent mentoring literature advocates the development of mentoring networks and individualized mentoring pathways that extend beyond conventional dyadic relationships. Concurrently, advances in artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and learning analytics offer new opportunities to deliver personalized educational support at scale. This perspective explores the potential of AI-enabled mentoring networks as a strategy to strengthen mentoring and competency development in Indian dental education. Drawing on established mentoring theories, health professions education literature, and emerging educational technologies, we propose a conceptual framework integrating learner profiling, faculty profiling, intelligent mentor matching, dynamic mentoring road-maps, and longitudinal competency tracking. AI-enabled mentoring systems have the potential to enhance CBDE implementation and support the improvement of competent, adaptable, and future-ready oral health professionals. Future work should focus on ethical implementation, faculty preparedness, and evaluation of educational outcomes associated with technology-enhanced mentoring ecosystems.

Body Dysmorphic Tendencies and Maxillofacial Aesthetic Perception Among Dental Students

Pelin Aydın; Mustafa Özkan; Eda Deniz Akyol; Beyza Avran; Feyza Tetik; A.aslı Sağlam EurAsian Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, 2026, Vol. 5, Issue 3, pp. 114-122 https://doi.org/10.66702/ejoms.2005054

AbstractObjective: To assess body dysmorphic tendencies among dental students and examine their association with maxillofacial aesthetic perception and consideration of aesthetic intervention. Methods: A cross-sectional questionnaire study included 100 undergraduate dental students. Data were summarized descriptively. Bivariate associations with consideration of a maxillofacial aesthetic intervention were examined using Pearson's chi-square or Fisher's exact tests, and the association with the continuous body dysmorphic tendency score was examined using univariable binary logistic regression. Results: Previous aesthetic procedures were reported by 23% of students, and 38% were considering a maxillofacial aesthetic procedure. The nose was the most frequent specified region of dissatisfaction (38%); 43% selected an unspecified other region. Dissatisfaction lasting more than 3 years, a perceived facial defect, and checking or camouflaging behaviors were reported by 47%, 25%, and 59%, respectively. Sex, checking or camouflaging behavior, and perceived facial defect were not significantly associated with procedure consideration (all p>0.05). A higher body dysmorphic tendency score was associated with greater odds of considering intervention (odds ratio=1.75; p=0.036).Conclusion: Greater body dysmorphic tendencies were associated with consideration of aesthetic intervention. Psychological awareness and appropriate screening should be incorporated into dental education and aesthetic treatment planning.
