Since the large-scale displacement of Ukrainian families following the escalation of the war in 2022, community- and school-based initiatives have become increasingly important in supporting refugee children's adaptation in host countries. Although play, resilience, and belonging have each been widely recognised as important for children's well-being and development, they have largely been examined within separate strands of scholarship. This theoretical article develops an integrated three-tier framework that brings together Bronfenbrenner's ecological systems theory, social-ecological resilience theory, and research on play and belonging to explain how displaced children adapt within host-country contexts. The proposed framework conceptualises children's adaptation as a recursive process operating across three interconnected tiers. Tier one situates children within their ecological environments; tier two identifies resilience as a multisystemic process emerging through interactions between children and the protective resources available within those environments; and tier three positions play as the primary mechanism through which resilience processes are enacted, while belonging functions as both an outcome and a reinforcing relational process. The framework is illustrated through the context of Ukrainian refugee children in Estonia and generates empirically testable propositions to guide future research. By integrating ecological context, resilience processes, and play-based relational mechanisms into a single explanatory framework, the article offers a conceptual foundation for understanding children's adaptation following forced displacement and provides implications for the design and evaluation of community- and school-based initiatives supporting displaced children.
Background: Refugee students newly enrolled in U.S. schools encounter academic, socialization, and mental health challenges because of trauma, language barriers, and cultural differences. Many have had limited or interrupted access to formal education in their home country. This study aimed to gain the perspectives of refugee students on their lived experiences and explore the impact of an occupational therapy intervention guided by the Kawa model on the well-being of this student population. Methods: The researchers employed a convergent mixed-methods design. Refugee students (n = 8) created Kawa models, which provided rich, qualitative data. Participants completed pre and posttest surveys. Quantitative data gathered from surveys were used to measure students' understanding of their supports and barriers. Results: All participants demonstrated a 49% positive change in their perceived knowledge of their strengths, challenges, and supports. Qualitative analysis of participants’ Kawa creations revealed multiple collective themes throughout the migration stages of refugee students. Conclusion: This study's findings support existing evidence that culturally sensitive, person-centered interventions, such as one guided by the Kawa model, result in positive outcomes for refugee students. As school districts examine equitable practices for refugee children, occupational therapy support guided by the Kawa model may be a valuable contribution.
ABSTRACT Objective To examine how transnational family life and parent–child co‐agency shape educational decisions among Ukrainian refugee children in Poland. Background Since Russia's full‐scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, many Ukrainian families have relocated to Poland, where children navigate educational transitions amid legal, emotional, and educational uncertainty. Little is known about how these decisions are negotiated within transnational families whose members may remain dispersed across borders. Methods This qualitative study draws on interviews with 40 refugee children in the final grades of Polish primary school and 40 parents, conducted as part of the EduMAP research project. Results Parent–child co‐agency was dynamic and often asymmetrical, which is shown within two aspects: gendered parental asymmetry and parent–child asymmetry. Conclusions Educational transitions emerged as negotiated processes of agency and co‐agency within transnational family networks, rather than exclusively parental or child‐led decisions. Implications Schools should support refugee children and parents by providing guidance on recruitment procedures and school options. Family‐oriented support may strengthen children's participation while reducing excessive responsibility and helping mitigate educational inequalities.
Millions of children across the world are affected by war and displacement. In addition to having experienced traumatic war-related events, many refugee children end up living in adverse conditions with little access to basic resources. It is well established that children exposed to war and displacement are at increased risk for the development of mental health problems, including post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, depression, and behavioural problems. In this paper the Biological Pathways of Risk and Resilience in Syrian Refugee Children study (BIOPATH) is introduced, which was conducted over the last 10 years in order to investigate the complex interplay between psychosocial and biological factors in the development of risk and resilience among a large sample of vulnerable Syrian refugee children (N = 1,600) living in informal refugee settlements in Lebanon. Key findings from the BIOPATH study are summarized and reported, including the prevalence and predictors of mental health problems, predictors of risk and resilience, the development of resilience over time, the relationship between war exposure, hair cortisol levels and epigenetic factors (i.e. DNA methylation), as well as the role of the trait of environmental sensitivity for refugee children’s mental health.
This comparative ethnographic study draws on fieldwork in England and Brasil to analyse how refugee and (im)migrant children's educational rights are undermined in these two contexts. I argue that inclusion operates as enclosure: rather than guaranteeing rights, inclusion frameworks reproduce the structural conditions that sustain exclusion. In England, the hostile environment subordinates education to migration control through asylum dispersal, No Recourse to Public Funds, and the Prevent Duty’s surveillance. In Brasil, despite stronger legal protections, the humanitarianisation of Venezuelan displacement obscures the role of US sanctions and uses educational materials to reinforce donor influence. Across both contexts, systemic barriers such as housing instability, language exclusion, and policy fragmentation perpetuate enclosure. The findings challenge universal inclusion frameworks and call for justice-oriented, context-sensitive alternatives to advance educational equity for all children.
