This study develops and analyzes a learning design supporting students’ understanding of quadratic functions as patterns of change through representational transitions, using design research with qualitative retrospective analysis at two public senior high schools in Riau Province, Indonesia, within the Kurikulum Merdeka curriculum. Preliminary data came from 80 tenth-grade students through observations, an initial representation test, and interviews with 12 selected students. A separate teaching experiment with 80 tenth-grade students was implemented across two cycles, integrating a walking activity, the PhET Moving Man simulation, and GeoGebra, with worksheets classified using a three-level representational coding scheme. Students’ initial understanding was predominantly symbolic and procedural, with combined achievement across three representation indicators of only 34.53%. The learning sequence supported movement from contextual situations to numerical patterns, symbolic generalization, and graphical interpretation, though recognizing second differences and generalizing them symbolically remained the central bottleneck. Cycle revisions, notably a structured walking procedure and an added generalization row, were associated with more groups reaching representational coordination (4 of 10 to 7 of 10) and higher quiz scores (63.13% to 84.13%), though this is not a controlled comparison, since cycles occurred at different schools. This study offers a literature-grounded design moving students from procedural recognition toward conceptual understanding of nonlinear change, and identifies second differences as a representational bridge between numerical and symbolic forms. Three design principles are proposed: beginning with contrastive situations, using second differences as a bridge, and formalizing the general form after students recognize the structure of change.

Bridging barriers through technology integration in mathematics education: a qualitative multiple-case study of rural schools

Shonisani Agnes Mulovhedzi Frontiers in Education, 2026, Vol. 11 https://doi.org/10.3389/feduc.2026.1818616

Introduction This study explores how barriers to technology integration in mathematics education can be bridged within rural and resource-constrained school contexts. Although technology is increasingly recognised as a catalyst for improving access, equity, conceptual understanding, and learner engagement, meaningful ICT integration remains limited in many under-resourced schools due to persistent structural and pedagogical barriers. Guided by the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) framework, the study contributes to the literature by examining how teachers employ contextually responsive strategies to integrate digital technologies in mathematics classrooms. Methods This qualitative multiple-case study explored mathematics teachers’ experiences and perceptions of technology integration across three rural secondary schools in the Vhembe District, South Africa. Data were generated through semi-structured interviews with six mathematics teachers and three Departmental Heads. An interpretivist paradigm guided the study, and Framework Analysis was used to systematically analyse the data. Results The findings revealed four interrelated themes shaping technology integration: structural barriers related to infrastructure and connectivity; pedagogical barriers linked to teacher confidence and assessment challenges; opportunities for transformative instruction through dynamic visualisation and AI-supported learning; and the enabling role of professional development and instructional leadership. Technologies such as GeoGebra and graphing applications enhanced conceptual understanding by dynamically linking algebraic, graphical, and geometric representations. However, limited infrastructure and insufficient professional development in mathematics constrained transformative integration. Discussion The study contributes a Global South perspective by demonstrating how teachers in rural schools employ adaptive strategies such as offline preparation, blended learning, and collaborative device-sharing to sustain mathematics instruction despite resource constraints. The findings highlight the need for equitable ICT investment, mathematics-focused professional development, and leadership-driven support to promote transformative and inclusive mathematics education.

Enhancing Economics Education with GeoGebra: An Affordable and Customizable Tool

Kara Grant Applied Economics Education and Extension, 2026, Vol. 8, Issue 4 https://doi.org/10.71162/001c.169635

Economics students often struggle with the mathematical analysis of the discipline. Interactive tools created by textbook publishers overcome some of these challenges but often impose additional costs on students and lack customizability that would optimize learning. GeoGebra is an alternative tool for students with no additional explicit cost that promotes active engagement. Through GeoGebra apps, educators can create interactive assignments, embed reflective activities into case studies, and develop other applications, all based on the instructor’s creativity. Originally designed for mathematics, GeoGebra’s graphing, spreadsheet, and algebra capabilities can be adapted to help students learn and apply economic concepts in an immersive way. Additionally, the web-based application makes it possible for activities to be used in in-person, online, or hybrid settings. The objective of this paper is to introduce economics instructors to GeoGebra by providing several examples and applications of the tool and discuss its advantages and disadvantages to better inform instructor course tool selection. It contributes to future economics pedagogy by raising awareness of an innovative, cost-effective, accessible tool that enables educators to share activities with others and create their own immersive learning environments in economics. This paper provides educators with practical insights for leveraging GeoGebra’s capabilities.

Logical-mathematical reasoning is essential for interpreting representations, applying procedures, justifying relationships, and solving problems; however, evidence regarding students’ performance in Ecuadorian school contexts remains limited. The aim of this study was to characterize students’ diagnostic performance in logical-mathematical reasoning and to examine differences in its distribution across the participating educational institutions. A descriptive, exploratory, non-experimental study with a quantitative approach was conducted. A total of 843 third-year upper secondary school students, aged 15 to 17 years, from 21 educational institutions in Chone Canton, Ecuador, participated in the study. Logical-mathematical reasoning was assessed using a five-task diagnostic test, with each task scored from 0 to 4 points and aggregated into an overall score ranging from 0 to 20 points. Of the participants, 76.39% were classified at the low level, 17.08% at the regular level, 5.93% at the good level, and 0.59% at the very good level; no student reached the excellent level. Statistically significant differences were identified among institutions, χ²(60) = 392.62, p_MC = 0.00001, Cramer’s V = 0.394; H(20) = 208.51, p < 0.001, ε² = 0.229. The study provides a multi-institutional baseline of logical-mathematical reasoning in a relatively understudied Ecuadorian context. The findings may support the identification of educational needs and the planning of differentiated support according to students’ initial performance. Because no comparison group or quantitative pretest–posttest measurement was available, it was not possible to evaluate changes in logical-mathematical reasoning or attribute the results to the use of GeoGebra.
