Purpose Academic procrastination (AP) is a pervasive self-regulatory problem that undermines students’ academic functioning and psychological well-being. This study examined the direct and indirect relationships between growth and fixed mindsets, internal and external locus of control, and AP in sports science students. Method Internal and external locus of control were tested as parallel mediators in separate growth and fixed mindset models. A cross-sectional predictive design was employed with 544 undergraduate sports science students in Eastern Anatolia, Türkiye. Participants completed measures of mindset, locus of control, and AP. Parallel mediation analyses were conducted using PROCESS Macro (Model 4) with 5,000 bootstrap samples, controlling for age and gender. Results The direct effects indicated that a growth mindset was negatively associated with AP, whereas a fixed mindset was positively associated with AP. A growth mindset was positively associated with an internal locus of control and negatively associated with an external locus of control, whereas a fixed mindset was negatively associated with an internal locus of control and positively associated with an external locus of control. An external locus of control was positively associated with AP and significantly mediated the relationships between both mindset dimensions and AP. In contrast, the internal locus of control did not significantly mediate either relationship. Male students reported higher AP levels than female students, and age was negatively associated with AP. Conclusion These findings suggest that an external locus of control is a key behavioral mechanism linking mindset beliefs to AP. Interventions targeting maladaptive external control beliefs may help reduce AP among sports science students.
Introduction Children’s flourishing has become a central outcome in the study of child development, but its link with the cumulative burden of family risk remains poorly understood. This study examined whether two school-based relational resources—relationships with teachers and with peers—account for the association between cumulative family risk and flourishing in primary school children. Methods A questionnaire survey was completed by 1,673 fourth and fifth-grade children in Shaanxi province, Northwest China. A parallel mediation model with bootstrap confidence intervals was estimated, with sex, only-child status, and household registration entered as covariates. Results Cumulative family risk was negatively associated with flourishing, and the decrement was approximately linear across the number of risk factors rather than accelerating at higher levels. Teacher–student and peer relationships each carried an independent part of this association, and the peer pathway carried the larger share. Discussion Interventions should give priority to children exposed to several family risks. Where school resources are limited, restoring peer relationships deserves precedence, while the teacher–student relationship retains an independent contribution and should not be neglected.
The in-depth penetration of artificial intelligence (AI) technology has reshaped career forms and the structure of the labor market, exerting a profound impact on university students’ cognition and orientation towards career development. Based on the conservation of resources theory and self-determination theory, we conducted three studies—an experimental study and two survey studies—to explore correlational linkages between AI awareness and university students’ boundaryless career. Studies 1 and 3 consistently demonstrated that AI awareness is indirectly associated with boundaryless career through the parallel mediating pathways of intrinsic motivation and future job insecurity. Study 2 provided experimental evidence that heightened AI awareness increases both intrinsic motivation and future job insecurity. This research enriches the application scenarios of boundaryless career theory in the context of technological change, deepens the understanding of the mechanism linking technological perception to youth career psychology, and offers practical implications for career guidance in universities.
