Background and Purpose: Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a global concern in adolescent mental health. Rural boarding middle school students, as a unique and vulnerable population, remain understudied regarding the potential heterogeneity and longitudinal trajectories of NSSI. This study aimed to identify latent classes of NSSI among this group, examine their transition patterns over time, and evaluate the effectiveness of an emotion management group intervention. Methods: Study 1 cross-sectionally surveyed 927 adolescents; we split samples into non-NSSI and NSSI subgroups and ran latent profile analysis (LPA) only among participants with NSSI ( n =285). Study 2 conducted a 6-month follow-up of 550 participants and applied latent transition analysis (LTA) to examine class shifts and predictive factors. Study 3 was a randomized controlled trial in which 30 students from the High-NSSI received an 8-week emotion-management group intervention. Intervention effects were evaluated using repeated-measures ANCOVA with demographic covariates. Results: Within the NSSI subgroup ( n = 285), two classes were identified: a High-NSSI class ( n = 21, 7.4%) and a Low-NSSI class ( n = 264, 92.6%). Poor sleep quality and bullying victimization independently predicted High-NSSI membership. Longitudinal analysis revealed high stability in the Low-NSSI class (91%) and high fluidity in the High-NSSI class (83% transitioning to low-risk). The emotion-management intervention significantly reduced both NSSI frequency and negative affect. Discussion: These findings demonstrate that clinically meaningful NSSI subtypes exist among rural boarding adolescents and that sleep quality and bullying are key modifiable risk factors. The results support a stepped-care approach in school settings, where the High-NSSI class requires intensive intervention and the Low-NSSI class may benefit from less intensive, universal supports. The emotion-management group intervention is an effective school-based program for the most severe NSSI subtype. Developing effective therapeutic protocols for LGBTQIA+ individuals requires a commitment to practices that do not perpetuate suffering. Addressing negative internalizations and minority stress are two common transdiagnostic aspects within this population. Therapeutic models, such as Schema Therapy (ST), have emerged as a promising strategy; however, research in this area is scarce. This study aimed to evaluate an Affirmative ST program for LGB individuals. The program was tested in a pilot study involving nine participants. A total of 10 sessions were conducted, and the evaluation focused on: positive and negative affect, anxiety, stress (including minority stress), and depression. The effects of the intervention were analyzed using the Hageman-Arrindell approach and GEE. Significant differences were found for: reduction in depression; stress; anxiety; negative affect; and an increase in positive affect and stigma perception. This research represents a pioneering effort in the field of ST with LGBTQIA+ individuals, and further studies are encouraged.
As AI virtual influencers (AIVIs) proliferate, understanding human-AI emotional engagement is vital for advancing affective computing. To examine whether AIVIs evoke comparable affective responses to human influencers (HIs), we analyzed 156,918 Instagram comments that received 12+ million likes, integratinglarge language model (LLM)-derived knowledge graphs, emotion analysis, and machine learning. HI-directed discourse shows more differentiated emotional expression and a pattern consistent with more cohesive semantic networks than AIVI-directed discourse. AIVI-directed comments are less likely to express positive affect (24.8% vs. 41.5%) and also less likely to express negative affect (5.8% vs. 9.3%), indicating reduced affective expression of either valence rather than heightened negativity. This group-level tendency is not uniform: affective engagement varies substantially across AIVIs, and that variation is more closely associated with positive than with negative expression. Our Multi-Signal Embedding Network (MSEN), incorporating behavioral metrics and OpenAI semantic embeddings, classified influencer types from behavioral, affective and semantic features (F1 = 0.89), outperforming baselines including a state-of-the-art zero-shot LLM. These findings identify a boundary condition for the Computers Are Social Actors (CASA) paradigm: human-like appearance can elicit social responses without producing affective and semantic response patterns as rich as those elicited by HIs.
The research aimed to examine the effects of gamification environments on university students' achievement, flow experiences, and emotional states. This study utilized a mixed-methods design, incorporating a quasi-experimental approach for the quantitative phase and a phenomenological approach for the qualitative phase. The study group consisted of 80 students (Quizizz, n = 32; Quizlet, n = 48) enrolled in the Educational Psychology course at a state university. Data were collected through the Achievement Test, Flow Experience Scale, and Positive and Negative Affect Scale. Both groups showed significant pre-test to post-test gains in achievement, with no significant difference between the two groups. Flow experience was positively correlated with positive emotion in both groups, but with achievement only in the Quizlet group. In the Quizizz group, achievement was moderately and negatively correlated with negative emotion, whereas no such relationship was found in the Quizlet group. No significant relationship was found between achievement and positive emotion in either group. Qualitative findings revealed that students actively engaged in both environments, reported higher motivation, and found learning more enjoyable. However, they experienced the platforms differently. Quizizz users emphasized excitement through competition and scoring, whereas Quizlet users highlighted confidence gained from repetition and individual progress. Overall, these results indicate that gamification tools led to similar achievement gains, but through different flow and emotional processes.
Introduction Taking a positive education perspective, this study investigates the link between subjective well-being (SWB) and student engagement. Although many studies have found a positive link between the two multidimensional constructs, the literature lacks longitudinal analyses. Methods Based on the broaden-and-build theory and the upwards spiral hypothesis it was hypothesised that the dimensions of the two constructs would show bidirectional relationships. To test this, 1,762 fifth-grade students in Austria completed an online survey at two time points; the data were then analysed using a cross-lagged panel model with a three-factor model of SWB (positive affect, negative affect and life satisfaction) and a bifactorial model of student engagement (a general factor for student engagement and a specific factor for emotional engagement). Results Only one bidirectional relationship was found – between general student engagement and positive affect – but significant positive effects of both the general and specific student engagement factors at Time 1 on life satisfaction at Time 2 and of the specific engagement factor at Time 1 on positive affect at Time 2 were also identified. However, no significant relationships were found between either of the student engagement factors and negative affect. Conclusions Overall, the findings highlight the positive association between SWB and student engagement. Therefore, the results provide support for the upward spiral hypothesis and partial support for the broaden-and-build theory.
How do expert teams manage uncertainty and emotion when lives depend on coordinated performance? We present the first dual-channel analysis of team cognition in action: how a crew distributes information, coordination and affect between its private (crew-to-crew) and public (crew-to-ground) channels across a complete spaceflight mission. All 13,114 Apollo 11 statements (161,954 words) were coded with a validated six-category taxonomy and an emotional valence scheme. The crew expressed uncertainty at more than double the rate privately (21.11%) compared with the public channel (10.28%), while negative affect was four times more prevalent in private communication (2.82% versus 0.71%). This pattern persisted during the life-threatening descent and landing sequence. The private channel supported iterative uncertainty processing, with an uncertainty statement followed by further uncertainty in 18.78% of cases privately against 8.46% publicly, while the public channel exhibited a tight information–confirmation protocol. An expert team can thus actively partition cognitive and affective processing even under genuine life-or-death conditions, with implications for communication architecture, training and crew autonomy in future deep-space missions.
Irritability is a common and functionally impairing affective experience in young adults, yet its momentary dynamics and connections to everyday functioning remain poorly understood in non-clinical populations. Using ecological momentary assessment, this study examined how stable trait irritability relates to fluctuating state irritability in college-attending young adults, and how these dimensions are differentially associated with daily physical and mental functioning in the context of perceived stress and affective states. Trait irritability was associated with poorer physical functioning but showed no statistically meaningful association with mental functioning, suggesting a more enduring connection with somatic and activity-related domains. In contrast, state irritability emerged as the primary within-person correlate of impaired mental functioning, with only a modest association with physical functioning, indicating that day-to-day fluctuations of irritability are more related to impairments in psychological well-being. Both between-person differences and within-person changes in perceived stress and negative affect were linked to corresponding shifts in state irritability. Positive affect notably was associated with better daily functioning across physical and mental domains. Together, these findings position irritability as a multidimensional construct with distinct trait and state pathways to physical and mental functioning, underscoring the importance of contextual stress and affective states in the expression of irritability.
Previous research has suggested that culturally mismatched interventions may cause resistance and reduce the effectiveness of music-based interventions. This pilot randomized exploratory study examined the implementation and preliminary outcomes of a music-based intervention incorporating large language model (LLM)-generated, culturally adapted verbal suggestions among Chinese undergraduate students. A total of 113 participants were randomly assigned to three multicomponent conditions: (1) Chinese film music accompanied by LLM-generated verbal suggestions involving Eastern imagery, (2) a standardized music therapy recording with conventional verbal guidance, or (3) piano music without verbal guidance. Following a 40-minute cognitively demanding task, participants completed pre- and post-intervention measures of state anxiety, positive and negative affect, and heart rate. Baseline-adjusted ANCOVAs showed no group differences in positive affect, F (2, 109) = 1.03, p = .360, η p 2 = .019, or state anxiety, F (2, 109) = 0.68, p = .511, η p 2 = .012. A significant group effect was found for negative affect, F (2, 109) = 4.60, p = .012, η p 2 = .078; the Eastern imagery group had lower adjusted post-intervention scores than both comparison groups (Holm-adjusted ps = .026). Heart rate also differed across groups, F (2, 109) = 10.56, p < .001, η p 2 = .162, with lower adjusted values in the standardized therapy group than in the other two groups. The findings identify potentially meaningful response patterns but do not establish efficacy or the independent effect of culturally adapted verbal suggestions because the conditions differed in musical material and duration. Larger, controlled trials are required. (ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT07359950).
Introduction Parent-child physiological synchrony may reflect coordinated regulatory processes, but its meaning appears to vary across developmental and interactional contexts. Greater synchrony has been associated with more and less adaptive functioning, suggesting that synchrony should not be interpreted as inherently beneficial. The current study examined whether mother-youth trend-level physiological synchrony during a dyadic stressor was associated with multiple indicators of wellbeing in preadolescence. Method One hundred seventy-three mother-child dyads (Mothers: M age = 41.60 years; Youth: M age = 9.54 years, range = 8–12; 53% female) completed the Performance Challenge Task, during which youth attempted unsolvable puzzles while mothers observed. Respiration rate, root mean square of successive differences (RMSSD), and respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) were assessed simultaneously in mothers and youth. Youth reported positive and negative affect, depressive symptoms, anxiety, and aggression; mothers reported youth internalizing and externalizing symptoms. Growth models estimated each participant's physiological trajectory across the task, and mother and youth trajectories were covaried to estimate trend-level synchrony. Results Greater RSA synchrony was associated with higher post-stressor positive affect after accounting for pre-stressor positive affect, higher mother-reported internalizing symptoms, and lower mother-reported externalizing symptoms. RMSSD synchrony showed a nonsignificant trend toward higher youth-reported anxiety ( p = 0.08), and respiration-rate synchrony showed a nonsignificant trend toward lower mother-reported externalizing symptoms ( p = 0.06). Most other associations were nonsignificant. Discussion Findings did not support a uniformly adaptive interpretation of physiological synchrony. Instead, associations varied across outcomes and physiological indices, underscoring the importance of considering what form of synchrony is measured and the context in which it occurs.
Mood follows a well-documented circadian rhythm. Sleep timing and duration are similarly shaped by biological and social factors. However, large-scale, real-world data on how these patterns vary across demographic groups remain limited. Prior studies often rely on laboratory data or social media linguistic analysis, which lack direct self-reports. This study examines hourly, weekly, and demographic trends in mood and sleep duration reports using one of the largest online datasets of directly self-reported behavioral health: 468,092 Lumosity users (aged 20–79) who reported daily mood (−2 to +2 scale) and sleep duration (≤5–9 + hours). We assessed variation by time of day, day of week, and interactions of age, gender, and race/ethnicity using ANOVA and linear regression. Mood was higher among users reporting in the afternoon and evening, and lower from late night through morning. Mood showed a U-shaped pattern with age, consistent throughout the week, and longer sleep duration was linked to better mood reports throughout the day and week. Sleep duration varied by time of report and by day of week, with longer durations in the afternoon/evening and on weekends. Women reported longer sleep overall, Black users reported shorter sleep, and sleep duration declined from young adulthood through midlife before rising slightly among older users. Higher mood was associated with longer sleep, and the weekday-weekend mood difference was larger among users reporting longer sleep. These findings demonstrate the value of large-scale digital data for public health insight, highlighting demographic disparities in sleep and the importance of midlife as a key intervention period. Because the sample is likely skewed toward higher educational attainment and health engagement, disparity estimates may understate true population-level differences. The late-night peak in negative affect aligns with literature on nocturnal suicide risk, though this nonclinical sample cannot directly speak to clinical risk or crisis-service need.
