The Cost of Convenience in Human-AI interaction: Cognitive Offloading and Skill Reconfiguration

Samriddhi Gautam; Samarth Dubey; Praveena Joshi Praveena Joshi; Shreyas Pagare International Journal of Research and Review in Applied Science Humanities and Technology, 2026, Vol. 3, Issue 4, pp. 35-43 https://doi.org/10.71143/eyz05m97

Generative AI, and more precisely large language models, have nowadays rapidly become useful in education, professional work, and everyday tasks. While these systems offer notable benefits to make work efficient and improved accessibility, the recent evidence suggests that their usage has cognitive costs. This paper presents a structured review of 16 reviewed studies investigating the impact of Gen AI usage on cognitive offloading, metacognitive engagement, automation bias, and human skill. By studying experimental, survey-based, qualitative, and theoretical research, this review synthesizes several findings across several fields to identify recurring mechanisms through which GenAI usage reshapes cognition. Our analysis reveals a consistent pattern, where GenAI often improves short-term task performance, but it frequently minimizes effortful cognitive processing, diminishes self-regulation, and changes skill developments. Rather than constant de-skilling, this paper points out reconfiguration of skills, favoring efficiency-oriented competencies such as prompting and verification over generative reasoning and critical reflection. Our study further highlights these outcomes are not unavoidable but are strongly mediated by interaction design, educational practices, and socio-technical environments. By showing these effects as the “cost of convenience,” this paper contributes an integrative perspective on the cognitive effects of Gen AI and highlighting the ways to make AI design, education, and governance cognitively sustainable.

Metacognitive disengagement and knowledge innovation quality in human–AI collaboration: the mediating role of cognitive offloading and the moderating roles of task complexity and AI literacy

Wei Xiao; Cheng-Hao Men; Jia-Cong ZHANG Frontiers in Psychology, 2026, Vol. 17, pp. 1975833 https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2026.1975833

Generative artificial intelligence is fundamentally reshaping the cognitive conditions of knowledge innovation. While human–AI collaboration improves the efficiency of knowledge production, it may also induce creators to outsourcing cognitive work to AI systems. This study conceptualized this tendency as task-level metacognitive disengagement, defined as the immediate reduction of planning, monitoring, and reflection within a specific AI-assisted task, and, drawing on metacognition theory, cognitive offloading theory and self-regulated learning theory, examined its impact on knowledge innovation quality, its psychological mechanism, and boundary conditions through four complementary experiments. Experiment 1 showed that higher AI assistance significantly increased metacognitive disengagement. Experiment 2 revealed that cognitive offloading partially mediated the relationship between AI assistance and metacognitive disengagement. Experiment 3 confirmed the negative effect of cognitive offloading on knowledge innovation quality, specifically on novelty, usefulness, and developability, with metacognitive disengagement partially mediating this effect. Experiment 4 tested the proposed moderated mediation model and found that task complexity strengthened, whereas individual AI literacy weakened, the negative indirect effect of cognitive offloading on knowledge innovation quality through metacognitive disengagement. These findings reveal a hidden cognitive cost behind the efficiency gains of human–AI collaboration and provide empirical evidence and theoretical implications for cultivating innovative talent and designing human–AI collaborative mechanisms in the era of artificial intelligence.

The crisis of critical thinking in higher education: rethinking what universities should teach in an age of information abundance and generative AI — a critical narrative review of international evidence

Walid Salameh Frontiers in Education, 2026, Vol. 11, pp. 1981900 https://doi.org/10.3389/feduc.2026.1981900

Higher education has historically operated under a paradigm of information scarcity, positioning universities as premier institutions for curating and transmitting knowledge. The convergence of digital hyper-abundance, algorithmic curation, and generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) has disrupted this model, producing what educators increasingly describe as a crisis of critical thinking in higher education. The purpose of this review is to examine how information abundance, algorithmic curation, and GenAI use may influence university students’ critical thinking, and to synthesise what this evidence implies for what universities teach and how they assess. Using a critical narrative review design with thematic synthesis, the review analyses 45 verified sources (empirical studies, systematic reviews and meta-analyses, conceptual works, and policy guidance) identified through citation chaining and targeted searches; empirical GenAI studies date from November 2022 to 2026, and foundational theoretical works from 1976 onward. The synthesis is anchored in an integrative framework that combines cognitive load and dual-process theory, cognitive offloading, scaffolding theory, self-regulated learning, and epistemic cognition, with critical thinking as the principal outcome. Five themes emerged: (1) information abundance appears to shift the central cognitive challenge from retrieval to evaluation; (2) unguided GenAI use is associated with reduced cognitive engagement and, in several experiments, with weaker independent performance once AI support is removed, although guardrailed designs appear to mitigate this; (3) fluent AI output can be mistaken for validated knowledge, and AI-detection tools are unreliable and biased; (4) lateral reading, guided AI use, and process-visible assessment have promising but uneven support; and (5) workload, equity, and policy constraints limit adoption. From these themes, the review derives the Fade–Visibility Matrix, which crosses AI support structure (persistent versus fading) with assessment design (product-only versus process-visible) to yield four diagnostic states. The evidence is early and methodologically uneven, but it is most consistent with a structural rather than individual explanation. Universities should therefore teach evaluation, verification, and metacognitive regulation explicitly, design AI support to fade, and redesign assessment so that the learning process, not only the finished product, can be observed.

Generative AI summarization tools and deep reading comprehension among Chinese university students: the mediating role of elaborative processing and the moderating role of reading motivation

Ruyu Bai Frontiers in Psychology, 2026, Vol. 17 https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2026.2002898

Generative AI tools that condense texts into summaries have become a routine part of student reading routines, and educators increasingly worry that convenient summaries displace the effortful processing on which deep comprehension depends. This study drew on cognitive offloading theory and the levels-of-processing framework to test a moderated mediation model in which elaborative processing statistically links generative AI summarization tool use to deep reading comprehension, and reading motivation moderates the negative association between tool use and processing. Undergraduate students ( N = 608; 53.6% female; mean age 19.9 years) from three universities in Changchun, China, completed a six-item scale of generative AI summarization tool use, an eight-item elaborative processing scale adapted from the deep-processing subscale of the R-SPQ-2F, a seven-item reading motivation measure adapted from the Motivation for Reading Questionnaire, and a researcher-developed deep reading comprehension test. Scale reliabilities were satisfactory (Cronbach alpha = 0.88, 0.87, and 0.86). Tool use correlated negatively with elaborative processing ( r = −0.41) and comprehension ( r = −0.24); elaborative processing correlated positively with comprehension ( r = 0.59). PROCESS analyses (Model 7) with 5,000 bootstrap resamples showed that tool use negatively predicted elaborative processing ( b = −0.310, p < 0.001) and that this association weakened as reading motivation rose (interaction b = 0.433, p < 0.001). Elaborative processing, in turn, predicted comprehension ( b = 10.097, p < 0.001), whereas the residual direct path of tool use did not reach significance. The indirect effect of tool use on comprehension through elaborative processing was significant and negative at low (−6.142, 95% BC CI [−7.353, −5.091]) and average (−3.130, [−3.851, −2.497]) reading motivation but nonsignificant at high reading motivation (−0.117, [−0.876, 0.629]); the index of moderated mediation was 4.374 [3.428, 5.402]. These results are consistent with an account in which elaborative processing statistically links summary reliance to lower deep reading, with reading motivation associated with a weaker negative indirect association; given the cross-sectional design, the modeled paths represent associations rather than established causal effects. They suggest that motivation-oriented reading instruction should accompany, rather than follow, the integration of AI tools into academic reading.

The impact of AI service quality on researchers’ work wellbeing: a dual-path moderated mediation model

Shuyang Liu; Tongyao Liu Frontiers in Psychology, 2026, Vol. 17 https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2026.1946487

As AI tools permeate scientific research, a critical question emerges: does better AI actually make researchers happier? Grounded in the Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) model, this study proposes and tests a dual-path moderated mediation framework in which perceived AI service quality influences researcher work well-being through two parallel psychological routes. The motivational gain pathway posits that higher quality is positively related to research self-efficacy, while the loss-alleviation pathway posits that higher quality is negatively related to cognitive verification load. AI trust is introduced as a moderator of both first-stage paths. Using data from 439 researchers and PROCESS macro models 4 and 7, we found that AI service quality did not directly affect well-being ( β = 0.07, p = 0.260), but exerted a fully mediated total effect. The loss pathway via cognitive verification load reduction was the sole significant mediating mechanism (indirect effect = 0.08, 95% CI [0.028, 0.135]). AI trust significantly moderated only the loss pathway ( β = −0.21, p < 0.001): the cognitive-relief effect became significant only at medium and high trust levels, remaining inoperative for low-trust researchers. These findings reframe the value of AI quality in research settings as cognitive offloading rather than competence enhancement, and position trust as a threshold condition rather than a continuous amplifier of AI benefits.

The Reflection Penalty: when managers accept leadership coaching from a human but not an AI agent

Tessa Forshaw; Jacob Hale; Mari Longmire Human-Computer Interaction, 2026, pp. 1-26 https://doi.org/10.1080/07370024.2026.2744236

Leadership coaching develops managers but is expensive and difficult to scale. AI may be able to help scale access, but “answering machine” like AI coaching agents invite cognitive offloading and weaken learning. We instantiated a human coaching protocol, supported across prior cycles, as a text-based AI coach built to prompt reflective questioning. In the fourth cycle of a design-based research program at a global consulting firm, eight managers received the same protocol from a human coach and the AI coach, applied each session in an observed onboarding activity, and reflected on both in interviews. All eight welcomed the probing questions and preferred the human coach. Notably, they resisted the same protocol of questioning from the AI coach and wanted answers from it instead. This study’s theoretical contribution is the Reflection Penalty, the cost an AI coach pays for asking a user to do the reflective work that makes human coaching effective. Its practical contribution is a jobs-to-be-done map for AI coaching, assembled from proposals participants raised on their own. It divides coaching into distinct jobs and assigns each to the human or the AI best suited to it. Both contributions are offered to those designing AI tools that aim to support reflection

Beyond the clicker: rethinking student response systems as pedagogical infrastructure for healthcare professions education

Rune Johan Krumsvik; Vegard Slettvoll Frontiers in Medicine, 2026, Vol. 13 https://doi.org/10.3389/fmed.2026.1967058

Large-group lectures (150 students and upwards) remain a central component of healthcare professions education despite longstanding concerns about passivity, limited interaction, and difficulties in providing formative feedback at scale. These concerns have acquired renewed relevance as educators face digitally connected student cohorts, ubiquitous smartphones, and growing concerns about digital distraction. Student response systems (SRS), initially introduced through dedicated “clickers” and now commonly accessed through students’ own digital devices, offer one approach to transforming the large lecture from a predominantly transmission-oriented format into an interactive learning environment. Meta-analytic evidence indicates positive effects of SRS on cognitive and non-cognitive learning outcomes, while research across psychology, nursing, medicine, dentistry, and other higher education settings suggests that their educational value depends less on the technology itself than on the pedagogical processes it enables. In this Perspective , we argue for a shift from viewing SRS primarily as engagement technology towards understanding it as pedagogical infrastructure for retrieval, formative assessment, peer discussion, feedback, self-monitoring, and metacognitive calibration in large lectures. Drawing on nearly two decades of research and educational experience with response technology, we propose an evolution from SRS 1.0 , centred on response and participation, through SRS 2.0 , centred on formative feedback and dialogue, towards SRS 3.0 , where artificial intelligence may enable adaptive questioning, misconception detection, personalised feedback, and instructor decision support. This development creates new opportunities for healthcare professions education, but also requires renewed attention to pedagogy, digital competence, privacy, cognitive offloading, and the role of the educator.

A Scoping Review of Generative AI's Dual Role as Scaffolding or Substitution in Self-Regulated Learning and Learner Autonomy in EFL Contexts

Nguyen Ngoc; Xuan Hong Nguyen International Journal of Language and Linguistics, 2026, Vol. 14, Issue 5, pp. 180-188 https://doi.org/10.11648/j.ijll.20261405.11

Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) is increasingly embedded in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) instruction, with self-regulated learning (SRL) and learner autonomy positioned as key outcomes of interest. A growing evidence base reports positive effects of GenAI on self-regulatory strategies, alongside a parallel and largely separate literature warning that GenAI use may foster dependency, cognitive offloading and the externalization of self-monitoring. This scoping review maps this apparent paradox, in which GenAI appears simultaneously as scaffolding and as substitution, across the SRL and learner-autonomy literature, with particular attention to its implications for EFL learners. Following a PRISMA-ScR-informed approach, 12 empirical and review studies published between 2025 and 2026 were thematically synthesized alongside four foundational theoretical works. As a result, four thematic clusters emerged: (1) evidence of GenAI functioning as scaffolding for SRL; (2) evidence of GenAI functioning as substitution, fostering dependency and cognitive offloading; (3) design and timing features that moderate which role GenAI plays; and (4) existing reviews and meta-analyses, together with their methodological limitations. Across clusters, a consistent pattern emerges, in that nearly all studies rely on short-term or cross-sectional designs, and several recent reviews explicitly call for research measuring learners’ delayed, unsupported performance so as to distinguish durable internalization from temporary dependency. No identified study has applied a longitudinal design incorporating a structured AI-withdrawal phase to directly test this distinction among EFL learners. This review argues for such a design and outlines its theoretical and methodological implications for Vietnamese EFL contexts.
