Classroom Participation in Beginner Arabic Courses: Barriers and Pedagogical Responses

Mahmoud Abd El Fattah Ibrahim Essa Lecture Notes in Education Arts Management and Social Science, 2026, Vol. 4, Issue 6, pp. 145-152 https://doi.org/10.26689/lne.v4i6.15919

Classroom participation in beginner Arabic courses is often interpreted through the number of students who answer questions aloud. This conceptual and practice-oriented paper argues that such a measure obscures differences between willingness to communicate, linguistic capacity, and the opportunity to participate. Drawing on research in Arabic learning, willingness to communicate, classroom discourse, interaction, and corrective feedback, it develops a barrier–indicator–response matrix for teacher decision-making. Six barriers are paired with provisional observable indicators, proportionate instructional responses, and limits on the evidence supporting each response. Three hypothetical Arabic classroom applications illustrate how the matrix can guide preparation, participation opportunities, and feedback without turning visible participation into a proxy for learning. The matrix is a heuristic rather than a validated diagnostic or intervention instrument. Future observational and intervention studies are needed to test its utility in beginner Arabic settings.

The Dynamics of Educators' Professional Competence Development through Assertive Communication in Junior High School Leadership

Nur Indah Fitriani; Harjito Harjito; Ghufron Abdullah Jurnal Ragam Pengabdian, 2026, Vol. 3, Issue 3, pp. 11606-11620 https://doi.org/10.62710/xf1cdq93

Teachers’ participation in professional development is often high, yet it does not always translate into classroom innovation, a persistent transfer-of-learning gap. This study explores how principals’ assertive communication was associated with teachers’ professional competence development in two junior high schools (one public, one private) in Brebes Regency, Indonesia. An explanatory sequential mixed-methods design was used: baseline teacher competence was descriptively mapped from the Ruang GTK platform and the Education Report (Rapor Pendidikan), followed by a qualitative phase with 22 purposively selected informants (principals, vice-principals, teachers, students, and parents). Data were gathered through surveys, interviews, observations, and document analysis, and analyzed using Miles et al.’s interactive model with triangulation. Baseline data showed high training participation (score 4) but stagnant instructional innovation and classroom management (scores 2–3). Four interactional dimensions of assertive communication emerged: directive transparency, dialogic respect, non-blaming corrective feedback, and facilitative advocacy. These were associated with reduced teacher defensiveness and greater openness to interactive and digital teaching, and varied with institutional readiness. The study frames assertive leadership as a dynamic system of instructional communication rather than a fixed trait. Given its two-school, non-causal design, the findings are context-specific; they suggest that sustaining competence requires structured post-training clinical supervision and a constructive feedback culture.

Classroom feedback through learners’ eyes: non-English major students’ growth-oriented learning behavior in EFL higher education

Ruedeerath Chusanachoti; Tatchakrit Matyakhan Language Testing in Asia, 2026, Vol. 16, Issue 1 https://doi.org/10.1186/s40468-026-00477-x

Although corrective feedback has been widely studied in EFL contexts, limited research has examined how specific types of classroom feedback relate to non-English major students’ growth-oriented learning behavior (GOLB), particularly in higher education. Previous research has tended to emphasize linguistic accuracy, with less attention to the affective, motivational, and behavioral processes through which learners receive and use feedback. To address this gap, this quantitatively driven convergent mixed-methods study investigated non-English major EFL students’ perceptions of different types of feedback and their perceived contributions to GOLB. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected from 598 non-English major university students in Thailand. The quantitative phase examined 10 feedback types across four dimensions of GOLB: motivation to improve, learning from mistakes, willingness to apply feedback, and persistence and effort. The qualitative phase analyzed responses to open-ended questionnaire items to contextualize the statistical results. Based entirely on participants’ self-reported perceptions, the findings revealed a clear preference for positive reinforcement, delayed feedback, and explicit correction. Participants rated these three types as receiving higher mean ratings for their motivation, confidence, and intended engagement with feedback than repetition, metalinguistic feedback, and self-correction. Positive reinforcement emerged as the most consistently valued feedback type across all four dimensions. Qualitative findings further showed that students preferred feedback that was encouraging, clear, actionable, and accessible, with many favoring feedback delivered in both Thai and English. The findings suggest that effective feedback is not only corrective but also affectively supportive, cognitively accessible, and linguistically responsive to learners’ needs. The study concludes by proposing the 3C2A Feedback Guideline as a provisional, data-informed framework for learner-responsive feedback in non-English major EFL classrooms.

Generative AI-Mediated Feedback and L2 Grammatical-Lexical Development: A Scoping Review of Longitudinal Research Gaps

Le An; Xuan Hong Nguyen International Journal of Language and Linguistics, 2026, Vol. 14, Issue 5, pp. 189-198 https://doi.org/10.11648/j.ijll.20261405.12

The rapid adoption of generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools such as ChatGPT in second language (L2) writing instruction has produced a fast-growing body of research on AI-generated written corrective feedback. Two recent scoping reviews have mapped this literature broadly, focusing on feedback quality, learner uptake and pedagogical integration. However, neither review specifically examined how this literature treats grammatical and lexical development as distinct, measurable constructs, nor how it addresses the moderating role of learner proficiency over time. This scoping review synthesizes 30 empirical and methodological sources, identified through a targeted, PRISMA-ScR-informed search of Google Scholar, Scopus-indexed journal content and ERIC, together with citation networks, to map the state of longitudinal research on generative-AI-mediated feedback and grammatical-lexical development in L2/EFL writing. The review finds that most intervention studies remain limited to a single semester or shorter, that grammatical accuracy and lexical development are rarely measured as separate, co-tracked outcomes and that only a small number of very recent studies (2025-2026) have applied longitudinal growth-modelling techniques, none of which disentangle grammar from vocabulary or systematically test proficiency level as a moderator of developmental trajectories. No such study appears to have been conducted in the Vietnamese EFL context, based on the sources identified in this review. The review proposes a research agenda for longitudinal, multi-proficiency-level, construct-differentiated research on generative-AI-mediated feedback and outlines implications for instructional design and future primary research.
