Introduction Event nominalizations are a central feature of academic language: they compress complex events into nominal structures, increasing informational density while reducing the transparency of thematic-role assignment. The present eye-tracking study examined whether nominalizations impose greater processing demands than corresponding active and passive constructions in developing readers, and whether these effects vary across readers with different linguistic and literacy profiles. Methods Seventy-nine fifth- and sixth-grade children participated in the study: 28 typically developing monolingual Italian children, 21 monolingual Italian children with developmental dyslexia, and 30 typically developing bilingual children with migrant background and Italian as the societal language. Participants silently read short passages in which the same target event was expressed either as a nominalization, a passive construction, or an active construction, and then answered comprehension questions while their eye movements were recorded. Accuracy, standard eye-movement measures, and scanpaths were analyzed to capture comprehension outcomes and online reading strategies. Results Nominalizations did not significantly reduce comprehension accuracy, but they affected online processing during both initial reading and the question-answering phase. Scanpath dissimilarity was higher for nominalizations than for both verbal constructions during initial reading, and than for passives during question-answering in correctly answered trials. In these trials, nominalizations were also associated with a higher probability of partial rescanning and a lower probability of minimal rescanning relative to active texts, indicating greater reliance on rereading when answering questions correctly. Moreover, children with dyslexia showed a generalized increase in processing effort, whereas bilingual children displayed an intermediate profile, with increased reliance on rereading during question-answering. Discussion These findings indicate that nominalizations significantly influence online reading processes even when questions are answered correctly, suggesting additional demands in retrieving information about event participants. Overall processing patterns differed across reader groups, and children with dyslexia showed the greatest effort in both online reading and question-answering.
Abstract This study investigates how L1–L2 typological distance moderates the predictive validity of large language model (LLM)-based metrics in L2 reading, alongside the compensatory role of cognitive resources. Eye-tracking data from Chinese learners with L1 Lao, Burmese, Thai and Vietnamese revealed that surprisal predicted processing difficulty across all groups, whereas contextual entropy effects were group-specific and qualified by cognitive differences. Cognitive abilities explained unique variance only in Vietnamese learners, with verbal short‑term storage (VSTS) showing an independent effect. Additionally, VSTS and reading comprehension accuracy showed significant interactions with typological distance, such that higher learner-level memory and comprehension-performance indices were associated with reduced processing burden under greater L1–L2 divergence. These findings demonstrate that LLM metrics’ validity is constrained by typology and modulated by cognitive resources, supporting adaptive L2 processing models and the Cognitive Resource Coordination Model (Robinson [2001, Second Language Research 17(4), pp. 368–392]).
Mental health chatbots increasingly rely on conversational interaction to support users' emotional well-being, yet little is known about how users interpret temporary silence while waiting for system responses. Existing research on social presence and anthropomorphic interaction has primarily focused on conversational content after a response is generated, whereas the waiting phase remains underexplored. Drawing on social presence theory, this study conceptualizes anthropomorphic latency cues as socially meaningful signals that may shape users’ emotional and interactional experiences during temporary conversational silence. Two studies were conducted. Study 1 developed and semantically validated three categories of anthropomorphic latency cues (empathic, effortful, and playful). Study 2 employed a within-subjects laboratory experiment with university students, comparing five latency-cue conditions (text, progress bar, empathic, effortful, and playful) using subjective evaluations, eye-tracking measures, and semi-structured interviews. The results showed that anthropomorphic latency cues were associated with lower anxiety and greater pleasure in several condition-level comparisons relative to non-anthropomorphic feedback. Perceived interaction continuity was significantly associated with reduced anxiety and enhanced pleasure. Within the anthropomorphic conditions, mediation analyses revealed significant indirect associations among perceived anthropomorphism, social presence, and emotional and interactional outcomes. Eye-tracking results indicated longer fixation durations on anthropomorphic latency cues during temporary silence. Qualitative findings further suggested that participants often interpreted latency cues as signals of attentiveness, responsiveness, and interaction continuity rather than merely as technical loading indicators. Overall, temporary conversational silence may function as a socially meaningful phase of AI-mediated interaction rather than a purely technical delay. The study extends social presence research into temporally silent phases of conversational AI interaction and provides preliminary design implications for chatbot-based support systems.
Abstract Many studies have used post-tests to examine word-related factors, such as encounter frequency, that influence L2 learners’ incidental acquisition of single words. However, less is known about how context affects the processing and acquisition of multi-word units, such as non-literal English phrasal verbs (PVs), which are particularly challenging for L2 learners to master. This eye-tracking study investigated how contextual richness influences L2 learners’ processing and acquisition of non-literal English PVs. Fifty-seven Chinese-L1 postgraduate students were randomly assigned to three groups, each reading eight low-frequency PVs in contexts varying in informativeness: more informative , less informative and uninformative. Vocabulary post-tests and delayed post-tests assessed incidental learning gains. Results indicated that more informative contexts enhanced form retention, whereas less informative contexts facilitated meaning recognition. These findings contribute to cognitive theories of word learning and offer practical insights for L2 vocabulary instruction.
