This research aims to analyze and compare the effectiveness of authoritarian and democratic leadership styles in improving student discipline in schools. The method employed is a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) using content analysis of ten reputable scientific articles published within the last decade. The results demonstrate that authoritarian leadership tends to produce only instant and fragile compliance based on fear of punishment. Conversely, democratic leadership is proven to be significantly more effective in fostering sustainable discipline by building students' intrinsic awareness through persuasive communication, dialogue, and role modeling. This democratic-transformative pattern successfully cultivates independent, responsible, and emotionally mature student characters. Therefore, democratic leadership is recommended as the primary paradigm in modern educational management to create a conducive school ecosystem.
In South Africa, the persistent issue of graduates being ill-prepared for the job market highlights the deep-seated inequalities within the country's higher education system. Often, employability is attributed to student motivation or individual “skills gaps,” but these explanations overlook the structural mismatches that affect the transition from university to employment. This paper explores how curriculum design, Work-Integrated Learning (WIL), and the digital divide interact to contribute to career unpreparedness among students at a Historically Disadvantaged Institution (HDI) that serves many rural and low-income communities. This study addresses that gap by foregrounding the perspectives of institutional actors, lecturers, WIL coordinators, and academic advisors at a single HDI. Through an interpretivist qualitative study using semi-structured interviews with lecturers, WIL coordinators, and academic advisors, the paper examines how these institutional figures perceive the relationship among academic programmes, labour market demands, and students' real-life circumstances. The findings reveal that curriculum updates often lag behind the fast-evolving job sectors, particularly in Information and Communication Technology (ICT); that WIL systems are fragile due to limited placement opportunities, inconsistent employer engagement, and brief placement periods; and that students from rural and economically disadvantaged backgrounds face compounded challenges, including transport costs, weak professional networks, barriers to digital access, and limited knowledge of recruitment platforms. Additionally, the study highlights that the digital divide extends beyond mere connectivity issues to encompass disparities in access to devices and data, digital confidence, and digitally facilitated career opportunities. Amidst the discourse on the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR), globalisation, sustainability, and equity in African higher education, this paper calls for a transformation of the curriculum to be more collaborative, data-informed, and attuned to social needs. It proposes strengthening partnerships with advisory boards, co-creating curricula with industry, employing AI tools to align curricula, and coordinating policies among universities, employers, the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), and technology developers. The paper concludes that improving graduate employability in South Africa requires more than technical reforms alone; it necessitates addressing the structural inequalities that shape who can transition from higher education to meaningful employment. The paper contributes a structural-misalignment framework, a clear distinction among empirically grounded, analytically derived, and forward-looking implications, and a methodologically transparent account of qualitative analysis in a sensitive institutional setting.
Education in Yenagoa LGA, Bayelsa State, faces persistent vulnerability to environmental, infrastructural and socio-economic shocks-annual floods, riverine isolation, poor school infrastructure, and weak community ownership-leading to disrupted learning continuity and low retention. The paper contends that resilient education extends beyond the confine of a school-centric model and requires a robust, strengthened learning ecosystem. Through an integrative review of literature and the theoretical synthesis of Bronfenbrenner, Ecological System Theory, Epstein, Overlapping Spheres of Influence, and Resilient Theory, conceptualized as Yenagoa Resilient Learning Ecosystem Model (YRLEM). The model places the learner at the Centre of six interconnected pillars/layers: Immediate Learning Environment/Resilient learner: (1) Community Engagement Pillar, (2) Technology and Digital Access Pillar, (3) Environment and Climate Resilience Pillars (4) Infrastructure and Schools Pillars (5) Governance and Policy Pillars (6) Livelihood and Skills Pillars. It argues that by intentionally engaging indigenous institutions-traditional rulers, CDCs, women and youth groups, and SBMCs-and fostering structured multi-stakeholder collaboration between government, oil and gas companies, tertiary institutions, NGOs, and faith based-organizations, educations can be transformed from a fragile service into a community owned resilient system. The paper contributes a context-specific framework for policymakers, the Bayelsa State Universal Basic Education Board, and development partners, and advances propositions for future empirical validation in the Niger delta context
Despite extensive research on critical thinking instruction, approaches for supporting the maintenance of procedural argument-evaluation performance, particularly among struggling learners, remain underexplored. This exploratory study evaluated the Formalization and Argument Reasoning Evaluation Framework (FAREF), a flowchart-guided procedural scaffold integrating the Triangular Logic Model. In a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest design, 29 undergraduates received FAREF instruction ( $$n = 15$$ ) or conventional instruction ( $$n = 14$$ ). An omnibus item-level analysis yielded a significant three-way interaction between condition, initial skill, and pre-test response state, $$\chi ^2(1) = 4.08$$ , $$p =.043$$ , consistent with a consolidation-specific benefit for lower-skill learners; the interaction was fragile to single cases (leave-one-out range: $$p =.024$$ –.127) and marginal when initial skill was modeled continuously ( $$p =.053$$ ). No acquisition effect was detectable, and an equivalence test showed the study was insensitive to effects smaller than $$\pm\;0.10$$ on the proportion scale. The pre-test performance clustered near the chance level of the binary format, bounding all inferences. The findings are hypothesis-generating and motivate a powered, randomized replication with a validated instrument.
This study explores the professional identity development of pre-service English teachers through Possible Selves Theory (PST). It examines how they envision their ideal and feared selves while they are reflecting on their current selves during their practicum experience. Despite growing interest in PST in teacher education, previous research has largely relied on cross-sectional designs and has paid limited attention to how pre-service EFL teachers’ current, ideal, and feared selves evolve during the practicum, a critical period of professional identity formation. Using a phenomenological qualitative design, the researchers followed six final-year students of an English language and literature program during a twelve-week compulsory practicum. Because practicum is an important initial stage for preservice teachers to reflect on their professional identity, exploring how they express their current and future selves offers useful insights for teachers’ professional development. Data were gathered through observation tasks, reflection papers, and focus group interviews and analyzed thematically. The two overarching themes identified were fragile instructional self-efficacy and ambivalent professional identity. These themes indicate that ideal selves were associated with aspirations for pedagogical competence, student engagement, and professional recognition, whereas feared selves reflected concerns over classroom management, ineffective teaching, and professional stagnation. These future-oriented self-conceptions functioned both as motivational drivers and preventive safeguards, influencing teaching behaviors and identity formation. These future-oriented self-conceptions served as reference points that should influence teaching behaviors and identity formation. By tracing the dynamic interplay between current, ideal, and feared selves through longitudinal, practicum-embedded qualitative inquiry in a Turkish EFL context, the study provides a process-oriented account of professional identity development that is often overlooked in cross-sectional PST research. The findings suggest that structured reflection and mentor-supported practicum experiences may foster more intentional and adaptive identity construction, offering practical implications for teacher education programs seeking to integrate identity-oriented reflective practices into professional preparation.
Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education has become central to Africa’s development aspirations and technological transformation. However, persistent gaps in scientific capability, technological agency, and innovation outcomes continue to widen. This article examines how global science and technology (S&T) asymmetry shapes African STEM education systems: structurally, institutionally, and epistemically. Using a conceptual analytical approach, the study analyzes how inherited institutional cultures and structures, economic constraints, epistemic hierarchies, and emerging digital dependencies converge to influence STEM education systems across the continent. The analysis is organized around four interconnected domains: systemic foundations, curriculum packages, human capital, and innovation ecosystems. Across these domains, the findings show that African STEM education systems are deeply embedded in externally shaped policy frameworks, donor-driven priorities, and global benchmarking regimes. At the policy level, reliance on imported models and weak coordination undermines long-term system building. At the practice level, fragile institutional capacity, inadequate funding and infrastructure, talent loss, and fragmented innovation systems constrain meaningful implementation. These conditions weaken the capacity of STEM education to inspire learners, support teachers, foster technological agency, and connect scientific learning to local problem-solving and development pathways. Drawing on illustrative country cases and development experiences from non-African contexts, the article argues that Africa’s STEM education challenges are primarily structural and institutional. The paper concludes by outlining general pathways for strengthening African STEM education via reclaiming policy autonomy, ecosystem-based approaches, strategic public investment, and alignment with national and continental development priorities.
Consciousness is the one thing each of us knows with absolute certainty — and the one thing science has the hardest time explaining. It is also fragile. Certain molecules, taken deliberately or by accident, can rearrange it within minutes; certain illnesses can entrench false beliefs so stubbornly that no argument can dislodge them. This article tells the story of two ways the mind's grip on reality can loosen: hallucinogens, the classic psychedelic compounds now undergoing a remarkable clinical renaissance, and mixed delusions, the clinically common but under discussed condition in which a person harbours two or more delusional themes at once.
Values are transmitted from family to child not through explicit instruction but within the ordinary flow of everyday life and, more often than not, without words, which renders this transmission at once durable and fragile. This study examines how value transmission has been transformed by digitalization through the narratives of a transitional generation that spent its childhood within traditional patterns of settlement and relationships yet carries out its parenting in a digitalized environment. Within an interpretive phenomenological design, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 21 parents living in Afyonkarahisar, and the data were analyzed thematically. In childhood narratives, transmission operated without recourse to words, through the gaze, example, and shared space. The entry of digital media into the home fragmented this shared time-space, and children’s capacity to verify their parents instantly brought the family’s relative monopoly over knowledge to an end. Authority has not disappeared; rather, its legitimacy has shifted from threat and fear to persuasion and negotiation. Privacy has emerged as a new domain of value which, when read through the lens of contextual integrity, operates as a local order woven from gendered visibility and religious-moral references. Narrative-level comparison shows that traditional and negotiated elements coexist within individual narratives, including those of the youngest and oldest participants. While the family has lost its epistemic authority, it retains its moral authority; the process thus amounts to a restructuring rather than a dissolution.
CONTEXT: What happens when a system keeps working-not because it is well designed but because people keep absorbing the strain? That question stayed with me after studying a community-led vaccination clinic during the COVID-19 pandemic. It delivered hundreds of vaccinations a day, with no formal chain of command or protocols. By any measure, it was a success. What it cost to sustain that success was never examined. Across my empirical work, I kept encountering the same pattern: systems functioning because people stretched roles, coordinated through workarounds and relied on relationships that were not designed to carry the full load. These adaptations were effective. Yet they were also hiding strain. CONCEPTUAL CONTRIBUTION: In this paper, I introduce Brittle Threshold as a concept for attending to this condition. Rather than treating adaptive action as evidence of success, Brittle Threshold frames adaptive action as diagnostic information: evidence of how a system is coping and how close it may be operating to its limits. Drawing on resilience engineering and on empirical patterns from studies of team adaptation and community crisis response, I argue that adaptive success and vulnerability regularly coexist. The more smoothly work appears to run, the more it may depend on fragile support. IMPLICATIONS: Brittle Threshold offers three contributions. It translates what adaptive success conceals in health professions education, it shifts what counts as evidence of system strain and it unsettles the moralisation of endurance as professional virtue. The question it opens is not why systems fail, but when is endurance no longer enough?
