Intersectional Barriers to Academic Access and Success for Rural Students in South African Higher Education: A Systematic Review and Social Justice Perspective

Cele Siyanda Mluleki Kenneth International Journal of Learning Teaching and Educational Research, 2026, pp. 626 https://doi.org/10.26803/ijlter.25.10.26

Rural-origin students in South African higher education face multiple, overlapping forms of marginalisation that collectively hinder their academic access and success. Despite significant policy reforms aimed at expanding access and addressing historical injustices, the educational paths of these learners are still disproportionately affected by a combination of socio-economic deprivation, linguistic exclusion, gendered vulnerabilities, and technological marginalisation. This systematic review synthesises current empirical evidence to clarify how these intersectional barriers merge to obstruct the educational journeys of rural-origin students in South African higher education. It also critically examines how institutional policies and technological interventions may unintentionally reinforce or potentially alleviate these inequities. The study followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, conducting a comprehensive search across multiple academic databases for studies published between 2018 and 2026. After a rigorous screening and eligibility process, 52 studies met the inclusion criteria and underwent thematic analysis guided by Nancy Fraser's trivalent social justice framework. Five overarching themes emerged: The multidimensional digital divide; linguistic exclusion and the devaluation of vernacular knowledge; gendered vulnerabilities and the burden of social reproduction; algorithmic bias and the risks associated with technological solutionism; and governance gaps alongside the failure of participatory parity. The findings revealed that existing equity frameworks inadequately address the structural dimensions of rural marginalisation. Achieving educational equity necessitates a fundamental shift towards intersectionality-aware, context-sensitive institutional policies that prioritise resource redistribution, cultural recognition, and the meaningful representation of students from rural backgrounds in decision-making processes.

Aim and background: Sleep is a biological necessity essential for physical and mental well-being, yet many young adults, particularly college students, experience sleep disruptions due to major life changes and poor sleep hygiene. This study aimed to identify the determinants of insomnia among undergraduate female students in a rural area of Haryana.Materials and methods: A mixed-method study was conducted between May 2024 and May 2025 involving 340 undergraduate female students.Quantitative data were collected using a semi-structured socio-demographic questionnaire and the insomnia severity index (ISI).Qualitative insights were gathered through in-depth interviews (IDI) with 15 students identified with clinically significant insomnia.Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS software version 26, with significance set at p < 0.05.Results: The prevalence of clinically significant insomnia in the cohort was 5.6% (n = 19).Quantitative analysis revealed that the participant's state of origin was the only statistically significant socio-demographic determinant (p = 0.031).Students from states other than Haryana reported a significantly higher insomnia prevalence (12.5%) compared to those from Haryana (4.2%).Factors such as age, socio-economic status, and type of occupancy showed no significant correlation.Qualitative themes highlighted academic performance, overuse of electronic devices, social environment, and psycho-social stress as primary triggers. Conclusion: While the prevalence of insomnia is relatively low, it is significantly driven by academic transitions, excessive screen time, and communal living challenges.A notable awareness-action gap exists, as students recognize the importance of sleep but prefer self-management or mindfulness over professional clinical help.

Reimagining rural STEM by integrating traditional agricultural knowledge into engineering design practices through culturally responsive approaches

Rif’ati Dina Handayani; Triyanto; Nila Mutia Dewi; Sutarto Discover Education, 2026, Vol. 5, Issue 1 https://doi.org/10.1007/s44217-026-02266-3

STEM education often marginalizes rural students by privileging urban-centric engineering standards and forms of technical representation. This study investigates how traditional agricultural knowledge can be translated into engineering design learning through a Culturally Responsive STEM (CR-STEM) approach in rural classrooms. Using a qualitative case study design, data were collected from 12 tenth-grade students through classroom observations, design activities, and student-generated artifacts during an engineering project. A six-phase thematic analysis revealed that integrating agricultural knowledge enabled students to transform everyday experiences into functional engineering strategies. Instead of relying on conventional two-dimensional technical drawings, students demonstrated sophisticated problem-solving through direct hands-on experimentation, material adaptation, and the adaptive use of locally available resources. However, the findings also revealed a pedagogical tension stemming from a disconnect between students’ practical skills and formal communication. While students demonstrated strong physical engineering competence during construction, they struggled with formal technical drawing and academic presentation, which constrained their ability to articulate and formalize their design reasoning. These findings suggest that culturally responsive STEM education should support students in translating tacit local expertise into formal engineering representations. The study contributes to discussions on equitable STEM education by proposing alternative approaches to recognizing and assessing rural engineering competencies in culturally diverse learning contexts.

The hidden classroom: how psychosocial infrastructure shapes academic achievement and educational equity in China

E. Lin; Kexin Wang; Zhongyu Deng; Junbing Xu Frontiers in Psychology, 2026, Vol. 17 https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2026.1902392

Objective While investments in physical school infrastructure are widely recognized as important determinants of student learning, the academic role of psychosocial infrastructure remains insufficiently theorized and empirically underexplored. This study examines whether psychological counseling room infrastructure (PCRI)—defined as the availability and facility condition of school-based psychological counseling rooms—is associated with better students’ academic performance and contributes to educational equity in China. Methods Using nationally representative data from the 2014-2015 China Education Panel Survey (CEPS), this study estimates the association between PCRI and students’ academic achievement. PCRI is measured at the school level, while student performance is captured by standardized test scores. The empirical analysis controls for a rich set of student, family, classroom, and school characteristics, and exploits the quasi-random assignment of students to classrooms within schools to reduce selection concerns. Mechanism analyses are conducted to examine the psychological well-being and motivational enhancement channels, and moderation analyses are used to assess whether PCRI has stronger effects among structurally disadvantaged student groups. Results PCRI is positively and significantly associated with students’ academic performance. The estimated coefficient is 4.467 with a 95% confidence interval of [3.908, 5.027]. A one-standard-deviation increase in PCRI is associated with a 3.26-point increase in test scores, with a 95% confidence interval of [2.853, 3.670], equivalent to 4.92% of the sample mean. Mechanism analyses reveal two distinct pathways: a psychological well-being channel, reflected in improved mental health and enhanced confidence in the future, and a motivational enhancement channel, reflected in higher educational self-expectations and stronger learning engagement. Moderation analyses further show that the academic returns to PCRI are larger among migrant students, students from less-educated families, students in schools with fewer psychologically trained teachers, and rural students. Conclusion The findings suggest that school-based psychological support infrastructure is not merely an auxiliary school resource, but an important component of the educational environment associated with students’ academic achievement and educational equity. By identifying psychological counseling room infrastructure as a distinct school resource, this study highlights how school resources may be linked to academic performance not only through instructional and material conditions, but also through students’ psychological well-being and motivational development.
