A Comparative Study of VR Therapy and Traditional Methods for Stress Management

Anshika Verma; Mrs. Divya singh International Journal of Research Publication and Reviews, 2026 https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.23830848

Stress arising from academic, professional and financial demands is common among students and young professionals, and the coping methods within easiest reach, such as listening to music, do not always suffice. This paper presents a survey-driven design for a virtual reality (VR) gadget that combines selectable immersive natural environments, environment-matched sound therapy and heart-rate biofeedback for short relaxation sessions. An online questionnaire completed by 24 respondents, mostly college students, supplies the user requirements. Among those who answer the relevant items, 65.2% report daily stress, 73.9% name academic or job pressure as the main cause, and 47.8% state that a busy schedule prevents regular yoga or meditation. Music is the most common coping method (63.6%). Asked about a 10–15 minute VR relaxation session described as free of side effects, 83.3% answer “yes, definitely” and 8.3% answer “maybe” if the price is under Rs. 5000. The findings yield design requirements, a system architecture, a session workflow and a protocol for comparing the gadget with guided breathing, meditation and relaxing music. That comparison is planned, not yet carried out: the prototype has not been tested with users, and the paper makes no claim of clinical effectiveness.

Background Emotional distress is common around clinical procedures, cancer supportive care, and health-professions training. Aromatherapy and music are easy to deliver, yet it remains unclear when combining them is worthwhile and whether the combination offers more than either component alone. Objective To synthesize experimental studies of aromatherapy combined with music or sound published from January 2019 through September 7, 2026; identify the populations and settings in which benefits were most consistent; and separate benefit over inactive care from incremental benefit over a single sensory intervention. Methods We searched PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, APA PsycINFO, Scopus, Web of Science Core Collection, CENTRAL, CNKI, and Dentistry & Oral Sciences Source from January 1, 2019, to September 7, 2026. Randomized trials and controlled nonrandomized or quasi-experimental studies were eligible when they included an identifiable arm combining aromatherapy with music or sound and reported emotional-distress or related physiological outcomes. Two reviewers independently screened records, extracted data, and assessed risk of bias. Clinical and methodological heterogeneity precluded meta-analysis; findings were synthesized narratively using SWiM guidance. Results Twenty-four studies involving 2,530 participants from 12 countries or regions were included. Of these, 21 were randomized studies and three were controlled nonrandomized or quasi-experimental studies. The evidence covered procedural and perioperative care, dentistry, nursing education and occupational stress, and cancer or palliative care. Results were most consistent in pediatric dentistry, magnetic resonance imaging, nursing examinations or skills testing, and some repeated cancer-support programs. Two lithotripsy trials and the adult endodontic study did not show a clear benefit. Although combined treatment often outperformed inactive care, it frequently failed to outperform aromatherapy or music alone. Adverse events, acceptability, and economic outcomes were poorly reported. Conclusion Combined aromatherapy and music or sound showed the most consistent reductions in anxiety or distress in pediatric dentistry, MRI examinations, nursing examinations or skills training, and some perioperative and cancer-support settings. Clear benefit was not demonstrated in lithotripsy or endodontic care; in general surgery, pregnancy non-stress testing, coronary angiography, palliative care, and outpatient oncology, the combination generally did not outperform a single modality. Future adequately powered factorial trials should standardize the interventions and use prespecified between-group comparisons, longer follow-up, and systematic reporting of adverse events and costs. روش‌ها: پایگاه‌های PubMed، Embase، CINAHL، APA PsycINFO، Scopus، Web of Science Core Collection، CENTRAL، CNKI و Dentistry & Oral Sciences Source از ۱ ژانویه ۲۰۱۹ تا ۷ سپتامبر ۲۰۲۶ جست‌وجو شدند.

Objectives Childbirth is a universally intense physiological and psychological event. For primigravida women, the lack of prior experience often leads to heightened anxiety and lower pain tolerance during the first stage of labour. This study evaluates the efficacy of a specialized instrumental sound therapy as a non-pharmacological nursing intervention to manage these outcomes. Material and Methods A quasi-experimental pre-test/post-test control group design was utilized at a tertiary care hospital in Mangaluru. Sixty-eight primigravida women were recruited via purposive sampling and divided into intervention ( n = 34) and control ( n = 34) groups. The intervention consisted of two 30-min sessions of traditional Indian instrumental music administered via headphones during the latent phase (2-4 cm dilatation) with a 30-min rest interval. Pain was assessed using the Numerical Pain Rating Scale (NPRS), and anxiety was measured via the Visual Analogue Scale for Anxiety (VASA). Results The study of 68 primigravida mothers found that following the music intervention, the experimental group showed highly significant reductions in mean pain score (6.44–5.00) and anxiety (4.50–3.59) score, whereas scores in the control group naturally increased as labour progressed. Post-test comparisons confirmed that traditional Indian instrumental music significantly lowered pain and anxiety levels compared to standard care, establishing it as an effective non-pharmacological labour aid. Conclusion Specialized instrumental music is a highly effective, low-cost tool for improving maternal comfort and psychological stability during labour. These findings support the integration of structured music therapy into standard obstetric care protocols to enhance the birthing experience in modern, home-like labour environments.
