Joselina Espinosa International Journal of Education, Research, and Innovation Perspectives, 2026, Vol. 2, Issue 10 https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.23271372

This study determined the organizational climate of Rizal High School and the leadership styles manifested by its administrators during School Year 2017-2018 as a basis for a transformational leadership training program. The thesis characterized the inquiry as a mixed quantitative-qualitative study and operationalized it primarily through a descriptive-correlational survey design. The entire population of 170 Junior High School student-leaders served as respondents. Leadership style was assessed using the 37-item Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire 5X-Short, while school climate was measured using the 42-item Student Development Program-School Climate Survey for High School-Revised Edition. Weighted mean was used to describe leadership styles and school climate; Pearson product-moment correlation and a t-test of the correlation coefficient were used to test relationships. Administrators were perceived to always manifest idealized influence-attributed (M = 3.24) and inspirational motivation (M = 3.26), often manifest idealized influence-behavior, intellectual stimulation, individual consideration, contingent reward, and active management-by-exception, and sometimes exhibit passive management-by-exception and avoidance. Student-leaders described sharing of resources (M = 3.14) and student-teacher relations (M = 3.32) as positive, while order and discipline, school building, student interpersonal relations, and parent involvement were somewhat positive. Significant relationships were reported between transformational leadership and physical climate (r = .98, p < .05), transactional leadership and academic climate (r = 1.00, p < .05), and laissez-faire leadership and social climate (r = 1.00, p < .05). The findings supported the development of a transformational leadership training program for administrators, teachers, and student-leaders to strengthen the school’s physical, social, and academic climate.

In higher education, student mental and emotional health and wellbeing continue to be a pressing matter of concern for administrators, policymakers, and students alike. For student leaders, this toll is often exacerbated by different modes of campus involvement and engagement; in this study, this includes college student government. While studies have examined students’ experiences more broadly, in this article, we illuminate findings from a larger study on 25 elected student government presidents and vice presidents who talked about the intense health circumstances they faced in their leadership roles. Through constructivist grounded theory methodology, we add to trauma stewardship frameworks to make some timely and important considerations for supporting college student government presidents and vice presidents. As a result, it is imperative for student government advisors and university administrators to address these concerns for student leaders. At the conclusion of this article, we introduce a model for Trauma Stewardship in Student Government.

Legislating and Leading on Student Basic Needs: College Student Government Efforts Toward Inclusion

Michael A. Goodman; Sarah Edmondson; Kate Carpenter; Ethan Foley New Directions for Student Services, 2026, pp. ss.70051 https://doi.org/10.1002/ss.70051

ABSTRACT As colleges and universities respond to students’ basic needs, structures and resources such as food pantries, emergency scholarships, housing access, transportation accommodations, mental and physical health efforts, and more become mechanisms for support. One additional structure to respond to and support students’ basic needs is a campus student government. Student governments often act as the voice of the student body to administrators and community members (Goodman 2021; Goodman and Licata‐Hoang 2023; Miller et al. 2006; Patrick 2023; Templeton et al. 2018), and addresses various issues associated with students’ needs (Goodman et al. 2021; Houze 2021). From campaigning to governing, student government leaders across the United States focus intently on how their advocacy efforts can support student access to fundamental necessities (Goodman et al. 2023). This article illuminates student governments’ role in addressing students’ basic needs. Institutions are called on to listen to and support student government leaders through legislation in the form of decision‐making, and leadership in the form of student leaders’ work and advocacy efforts.
