Qiuyu Yuan; Chenlu Yao; Changping Zhai; Xiaoqin Zhou Frontiers in Psychology, 2026, Vol. 17, pp. 1930200 https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2026.1930200

Objective Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is an urgent and substantial public health concern among adolescents. This study is aimed at identifying the independent psychological predictors of NSSI and developing and validating a logistic regression-based risk discrimination model focused on coping styles. Methods A cross-sectional study involving 206 adolescents (104 with NSSI and 102 healthy controls) was conducted. All the participants provided general demographic data, and completed the Experiences in Close Relationships Inventory (ECR), the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire-Short Form Version (CTQ-SF), and the Coping Styles Questionnaire (CSQ). Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to identify the independent predictors of NSSI. A nomogram was constructed in accordance with the final multivariate model. Model performance was evaluated using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves, calibration plots, the Hosmer-Lemeshow (HL) test, and a decision curve analysis (DCA). Results Multivariate logistic regression revealed that a higher level of self-blame (OR = 1.062; 95% CI: 1.023–1.102; P = 0.002) was an independent risk factor, whereas a better problem-solving capacity (OR = 0.911; 95% CI: 0.867–0.957; P < 0.001) was an independent protective factor for adolescents with NSSI. Attachment dimensions and childhood trauma did not retain independent significance after adjustment. The nomogram showed excellent discrimination (AUC = 0.951, 95% CI: 0.922–0.980), good calibration (HL test P > 0.05), and superior clinical net benefit across a wide threshold (0.01–0.99). Conclusion Targeting self-blame and enhancing problem-solving skills may be effective styles for the prevention of adolescent NSSI. As a preliminary finding, the nomogram developed in our study is a useful tool for exploratory differentiation.

Digital phenotyping for mental health monitoring and personalized prediction in people with diabetes: a Python-based scoping review

Wenhui Hou; Wei Sun; Haochen Dai; Yang He; Guodong Xu; Xuefang Xie; … Frontiers in Digital Health, 2026, Vol. 8, pp. 2005262 https://doi.org/10.3389/fdgth.2026.2005262

Background Diabetes frequently co-occurs with depression, anxiety, and diabetes-related distress, and psychological status directly influences glycaemic control and the risk of complications. Traditional mental health assessment relies on subjective scales. With the growth of digital health, digital phenotyping offers a new paradigm for real-time, objective mental health monitoring and prediction. However, the pathways through which these technologies perform monitoring and prediction remain unclear. Objective This scoping review aimed to systematically map the application pathways of digital phenotyping for mental health monitoring and prediction in people with diabetes, and to use machine learning-assisted text mining to analyse the main research themes and hotspots, thereby informing the future development of individualised risk prediction models and monitoring systems. Methods A scoping review search was conducted in six English databases (PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, Web of Science, Scopus, and the Cochrane Library) and four Chinese databases (CNKI, Wanfang, VIP, and China Biomedical Literature Database[CBM]), covering studies published from database inception to 10 September 2026. The search strategy was built around terms related to diabetes, digital phenotyping, and mental health. Machine learning-assisted literature mining was used to identify thematic patterns in the included studies. The study selection process and overall workflow followed the PRISMA extension for scoping reviews (PRISMA-ScR). Results A total of 2,968 records were retrieved. After screening, 10 studies were included. The evidence indicated that digital phenotyping mainly enables real-time monitoring of mental health in people with diabetes through signals such as continuous glucose monitoring (CGM), passive smartphone sensing, voice, and ecological momentary assessment (EMA). Machine learning methods were widely used for risk prediction modelling, but most studies built models at the group level, with only a few adopting n -of-1 analysis or subgroup prediction to achieve individualised risk prediction. External validation of models was generally lacking, and no intervention studies were identified. Conclusions Preliminary evidence suggests that digital phenotyping has exploratory potential for mental health monitoring and prediction in people with diabetes, but research that genuinely achieves individualised risk prediction remains limited. Closed-loop monitoring-intervention design and multicentre external validation are the main directions for future research. Systematic Review Registration https://osf. io/6wsaj/ .

Investigating the role of mental health and lifestyle behaviours in the risk of adolescent suicidal behaviours through machine learning

Yanmei Ding; Yanzhao Lei PLoS ONE, 2026, Vol. 21, Issue 10, pp. e0358758 https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0358758

Background Suicidal behaviors among adolescents are a serious global public health concern and are closely linked to both mental health and everyday lifestyle behaviors. Suicidal ideation, planning, and attempts lie along a spectrum of increasing severity. However, how psychological distress and health-related behaviors interact to influence suicide risk is complex and not yet fully understood. This study aimed to identify key mental health and lifestyle factors associated with different stages of adolescent suicidal behaviors using interpretable machine learning methods. Methods Data were obtained from the 2021 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBS), a nationally representative survey of U.S. high school students. After data cleaning and multiple imputation, 16,946 adolescents aged 14–18 years were included in the analysis. Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) models were developed to predict suicidal ideation, suicide planning, and suicide attempts. Model performance was assessed using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) and related metrics. Feature importance was examined using gain-based measures, while SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) and partial dependence plots were used to explore the direction, strength, and nonlinear effects of key predictors. Results All three XGBoost models showed satisfactory predictive performance. Mental health factors, particularly persistent feelings of sadness and self-rated mental health, were the strongest predictors across all stages of suicidal behaviors. Lifestyle behaviors, including sleep duration, physical activity, diet, screen time, and substance use, also contributed meaningfully to risk prediction, although their relative importance differed by outcome. SHAP analyses indicated that greater sadness and poorer mental health were strongly associated with higher suicide risk, whereas adequate sleep and higher levels of physical activity were associated with lower predicted risk. Substance use, including alcohol, cigarette, and marijuana use, played an important role in predicting suicide attempts than suicidal ideation or planning. Partial dependence analyses showed nonlinear and threshold effects, especially for sadness, mental health status, and sleep duration. Conclusion Mental health factors, especially persistent sadness and overall psychological well-being, were among the most prominent factors associated with suicidal behaviors among adolescents, while lifestyle behaviors showed important and stage-specific associations. Interpretable machine learning approaches help identify complex and nonlinear patterns associated with adolescent suicide risk and offer valuable insights to guide targeted, evidence-based prevention efforts.

Ross Jacobucci; Taylor A. Burke; Ying Cheng; Brooke A. Ammerman npj Mental Health Research, 2026 https://doi.org/10.1038/s44184-026-00251-0

Suicidal ideation (SI) fluctuates rapidly within individuals, but standard ecological momentary assessment (EMA) uses fixed schedules that miss critical risk windows. We present ARES-SI (Adaptive Reinforcement-Enhanced Sampling for Suicidal Ideation), a reinforcement learning system that personalizes EMA timing to individual risk patterns. ARES-SI combines random forest models to predict active SI probability and non-response likelihood with a Q-learning algorithm to determine optimal assessment intervals (30 min for high-risk states, 3 h for low-risk states, and next day to reduce burden). We trained the system using EMA data from 98 participants across three studies with varied sampling frequencies (4–15 assessments per day; 2359 positive active SI responses) over 28-day protocols. In validation testing ( N = 34; 374 positive active SI responses), the random forest models achieved an AUC of 0.865 for active SI and 0.750 for non-response. ARES-SI demonstrated 65% higher action selection accuracy than random scheduling (0.781 vs. 0.474; macro F1 = 0.650 vs. 0.377), with stronger detection of high-risk windows (30-min recall = 0.810 vs. 0.392) and efficient low-risk scheduling (3-h precision = 0.972 vs. 0.876). These findings provide initial evidence that reinforcement learning can adapt assessment timing to momentary risk.

Bayesian, network, and cross-validated modeling of suicidal ideation in people with suicide attempt histories

Mohammad Soleimanian; Zahra Sayemiri; Sattar Kikhavani Scientific Reports, 2026 https://doi.org/10.1038/s41598-026-76642-2

Suicidal ideation in people with suicide attempt histories may reflect dispositional, contextual, and interpersonal factors. We examined associations among Dark Triad traits, life-event stress, perceived social support, and suicidal ideation in 235 adults with suicide attempt histories recruited from several hospitals and clinics in Iran (53.6% women, 46.4% men; mean age = 33.97 years, SD = 7.90). Participants completed validated self-report measures, and data were analyzed using Bayesian path models, regularized partial-correlation networks, and repeated nested cross-validated elastic-net regression. Across analyses, greater life-event stress was associated with lower perceived social support, and lower perceived support was associated with greater suicidal ideation. Narcissism showed the clearest positive association with suicidal ideation among the Dark Triad traits. The network placed perceived social support at a central position in the multivariable system, and cross-validation indicated that models including perceived social support performed better than models without it. These cross-sectional findings identify perceived social support and narcissism as consistent correlates of suicidal ideation but do not establish temporal or causal relations.

Artificial Intelligence in suicide prevention: promise, peril, and clinical implications for clinical practice

Bénédicte Nobile; Philippe Courtet Dialogues in Clinical Neuroscience, 2026, Vol. 29, Issue 1, pp. 15-23 https://doi.org/10.1080/19585969.2026.2745684

The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into psychiatry is progressing rapidly, with promising yet underexplored applications in suicide prevention. While most existing studies have focused on suicide risk prediction, AI could be applied more broadly across the suicide prevention continuum. This review explores AI's potential in improving the detection of suicidal ideation (SI), enhancing clinician training, and expanding patient access to psychotherapeutic support. Studies suggest that AI models may identify SI more sensitively than clinicians by detecting subtle linguistic or semantic cues. Furthermore, AI-based virtual patients have been shown to improve clinicians' confidence and accuracy in suicide risk assessments, particularly when used alongside traditional training methods. On the patient side, CBT-inspired AI tools offer scalable, on-demand support, but most remain unregulated and clinically unvalidated. Despite their perceived empathy and availability, such tools pose ethical and clinical risks. Many patients use AI tools without professional guidance, a trend clinicians often underestimate. This disconnect calls for urgent regulatory oversight and professional engagement. Without clear clinical validation, AI-based tools may evolve outside medical frameworks, exposing vulnerable individuals to preventable harm. Psychiatry must not only adapt but also lead, ensuring that innovation is harnessed responsibly to serve patients with empathy, safety, and scientific rigor.
