The purpose of this study is to evaluate the legibility of fourth-grade elementary school students' handwriting and to examine the differences and relationships between two evaluators: a human researcher and artificial intelligence (ChatGPT). To this end, the study was conducted using the descriptive survey model, one of the quantitative research approaches. The study sample consisted of 67 fourth-grade students attending a public elementary school. The students' handwriting was evaluated using the Multidimensional Legibility Scale. Writing samples were collected from each student, including copying samples, dictated samples, and free writing samples. One class period was allocated for each writing task. The 201 handwriting samples obtained from the 67 students were evaluated by a researcher (the second author) and artificial intelligence (ChatGPT). According to the findings, no significant differences were detected between the artificial intelligence and the researcher in any writing type or subdimension, except for the slant subdimension of free writing. However, a high level of positive and significant correlation was identified between the two raters. Findings indicate that artificial intelligence can produce results comparable to those of expert raters when evaluating handwriting legibility. The fact that differences among raters are not statistically significant suggests that AI-based handwriting evaluations could serve as an objective and reliable alternative.

Students’ learning outcomes in Informatics remain a challenge when conventional instructional media offer limited interaction, contributing to passive engagement and difficulties understanding learning materials. This study examined changes in Grade X students’ learning outcomes after the implementation of Wordwall-assisted interactive learning media for the Computer Systems topic at SMAN 1 Sawahlunto, Indonesia. A quantitative approach was employed using a pre-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design involving 30 students from class X E4. Students completed a multiple-choice achievement test before instruction, participated in Computer Systems learning activities supported by Wordwall, and completed a posttest afterward. The intervention incorporated game-based activities to support practice and engagement; however, the research records did not specify its duration. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and a paired-samples t-test, with normalized gain (N-Gain) used to assess the level of improvement. The mean score increased from 53.67 on the pretest to 77.67 on the posttest, a difference of 24.00 points. The paired-samples t-test identified a statistically significant difference between scores (t = 8.664, df = 29, p < 0.001). The mean N-Gain was 0.538, indicating moderate improvement. These results show that students’ scores were higher after the Wordwall-assisted learning intervention. Nevertheless, the study did not include a control group, the observed change cannot be attributed to Wordwall alone; instructional or testing-related factors may also have contributed. Wordwall therefore be considered a useful supplementary medium for Informatics instruction, while further studies using control groups, larger samples, and documented intervention durations are needed to strengthen conclusions about its effectiveness.
Insecurity has become a significant threat to the effective delivery of basic education in Nigeria, particularly in communities affected by banditry, kidnapping, armed attacks, and communal violence. This study examined the influence of insecurity on teaching-learning outcomes in Universal Basic Education primary schools in Kagarko Local Government Area, Kaduna State, Nigeria. Specifically, it investigated the effects of insecurity on pupils’ academic performance and school attendance and identified strategies for reducing its adverse effects. The study adopted a qualitative documentary research design and relied on secondary data obtained from government publications, policy documents, institutional reports, international organisations, and peer-reviewed journal articles. The selected documents were analysed using qualitative content analysis and organised according to the study’s major themes. The findings revealed that insecurity negatively affects pupils’ academic performance by reducing instructional time, disrupting curriculum coverage, weakening concentration, and creating fear within the learning environment. It also reduces school attendance as parents may prevent their children from attending school because of kidnapping, attacks, unsafe travel routes, and instability within surrounding communities. Consequently, insecurity undermines the implementation of Universal Basic Education by limiting regular participation and disrupting stable teaching and learning conditions. The study concludes that ensuring school safety is essential for achieving the objectives of free and compulsory basic education. It recommends strengthening school security, implementing the Minimum Standards for Safe Schools, improving community participation, providing psychosocial support, protecting routes to school, establishing emergency response systems, and adopting flexible learning arrangements during periods of disruption.

Low learning interest in Natural and Social Sciences (IPAS) remains a concern in elementary schools, including SD Negeri 1 Jatimulyo, South Lampung, where a preliminary survey classified 47 of 77 fifth-grade students (61.0%) as having low interest. This study examined differences in IPAS learning interest between students taught with a joyful learning strategy supported by the game-based learning platform Wordwall and students taught with direct instruction using textbooks and worksheets. This quantitative quasi-experiment used a nonequivalent control group design with all fifth-grade students (saturated sampling; class VA as the experimental group, n = 39, and class VB as the control group, n = 38) across six meetings on ecosystems. Learning interest was measured with a questionnaire of 10 valid items (Cronbach's α = 0.814) and analysed with an independent samples t-test. The mean post-questionnaire score was higher in the experimental class (34.84) than in the control class (26.41), and the difference was statistically significant (t = −13.308, df = 75, p < .001). However, the experimental class also began with a higher mean pretest score (30.42 versus 23.15), so the result should be interpreted with caution. The strategy may serve as an alternative for IPAS instruction, and further studies that control for initial interest are needed.
implement the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model in an IPAS (Natural and Social Sciences) lesson on ecosystem harmony, aiming to enhance students' critical thinking skills. The study employed a Classroom Action Research (CAR) approach consisting of two cycles, with each cycle comprising the stages of "look," "think," and "act." Twenty-six fifth-grade students from SDN Tingkir Lor 02 Salatiga participated in the study. Students' critical thinking skills were assessed using a rubric based on the FRISCO indicators: Focus, Reason, Inference, Situation, Clarity, and Overview. The results indicate that students' critical thinking skills improved through the implementation of the PBL approach supported by the Science Escape Room medium. From an initial baseline score of 52.65%, the average critical thinking score rose to 70.94% in Cycle I and subsequently to 84.42% in Cycle II. This improvement reflects student progress in areas such as problem comprehension, reasoning, drawing conclusions, considering context, effectively communicating ideas, and reviewing their own thought processes. Thus, fifth-grade students at SDN Tingkir Lor 02 Salatiga were able to enhance their critical thinking skills while studying the IPAS topic of Ecosystem Harmony through the use of the Science Escape Room medium combined with the Problem-Based Learning model.
