Purpose: This study aimed to examine the relationships between teacher leadership components and students’ academic responsibility and academic self-regulation, with particular emphasis on the mediating role of self-directed learning among lower-secondary school students. Methods and Materials: This descriptive-correlational study was conducted among lower-secondary school students in Salah al-Din Governorate, Iraq, and their teachers during the 2025 academic year. Using multistage cluster sampling, 400 students and 400 of their teachers were selected. Data were collected using the Hoveyda et al. Teacher Leadership Scale, Lewis Student Responsibility Questionnaire, Zimmerman and Pons Self-Regulation Scale, and Fisher and King Self-Directed Learning Questionnaire. The hypothesized relationships among the study variables were analyzed using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM), which enabled simultaneous assessment of the direct and indirect effects specified in the proposed conceptual model. Findings: The inferential results demonstrated significant relationships between teacher leadership and self-directed learning, academic responsibility, and academic self-regulation. Self-directed learning was also significantly related to both academic responsibility and academic self-regulation. Furthermore, the structural model supported significant indirect effects of teacher leadership on academic responsibility and academic self-regulation through self-directed learning, confirming the mediating role of self-directed learning in the proposed relationships. Thus, stronger teacher leadership was associated with enhanced student responsibility and self-regulatory functioning both directly and through the development of self-directed learning. Conclusion: The findings indicate that teacher leadership represents an important educational factor associated with students’ academic responsibility and self-regulation, while self-directed learning serves as a meaningful mechanism through which these relationships operate. Strengthening teacher leadership competencies and simultaneously developing students’ self-directed learning skills may therefore provide an effective educational pathway for promoting greater responsibility, autonomous learning, and academic self-regulation among lower-secondary school students, with potential benefits for their broader academic and psychoeducational outcomes.

Insecurity has become a significant threat to the effective delivery of basic education in Nigeria, particularly in communities affected by banditry, kidnapping, armed attacks, and communal violence. This study examined the influence of insecurity on teaching-learning outcomes in Universal Basic Education primary schools in Kagarko Local Government Area, Kaduna State, Nigeria. Specifically, it investigated the effects of insecurity on pupils’ academic performance and school attendance and identified strategies for reducing its adverse effects. The study adopted a qualitative documentary research design and relied on secondary data obtained from government publications, policy documents, institutional reports, international organisations, and peer-reviewed journal articles. The selected documents were analysed using qualitative content analysis and organised according to the study’s major themes. The findings revealed that insecurity negatively affects pupils’ academic performance by reducing instructional time, disrupting curriculum coverage, weakening concentration, and creating fear within the learning environment. It also reduces school attendance as parents may prevent their children from attending school because of kidnapping, attacks, unsafe travel routes, and instability within surrounding communities. Consequently, insecurity undermines the implementation of Universal Basic Education by limiting regular participation and disrupting stable teaching and learning conditions. The study concludes that ensuring school safety is essential for achieving the objectives of free and compulsory basic education. It recommends strengthening school security, implementing the Minimum Standards for Safe Schools, improving community participation, providing psychosocial support, protecting routes to school, establishing emergency response systems, and adopting flexible learning arrangements during periods of disruption.

Low learning interest in Natural and Social Sciences (IPAS) remains a concern in elementary schools, including SD Negeri 1 Jatimulyo, South Lampung, where a preliminary survey classified 47 of 77 fifth-grade students (61.0%) as having low interest. This study examined differences in IPAS learning interest between students taught with a joyful learning strategy supported by the game-based learning platform Wordwall and students taught with direct instruction using textbooks and worksheets. This quantitative quasi-experiment used a nonequivalent control group design with all fifth-grade students (saturated sampling; class VA as the experimental group, n = 39, and class VB as the control group, n = 38) across six meetings on ecosystems. Learning interest was measured with a questionnaire of 10 valid items (Cronbach's α = 0.814) and analysed with an independent samples t-test. The mean post-questionnaire score was higher in the experimental class (34.84) than in the control class (26.41), and the difference was statistically significant (t = −13.308, df = 75, p < .001). However, the experimental class also began with a higher mean pretest score (30.42 versus 23.15), so the result should be interpreted with caution. The strategy may serve as an alternative for IPAS instruction, and further studies that control for initial interest are needed.
implement the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model in an IPAS (Natural and Social Sciences) lesson on ecosystem harmony, aiming to enhance students' critical thinking skills. The study employed a Classroom Action Research (CAR) approach consisting of two cycles, with each cycle comprising the stages of "look," "think," and "act." Twenty-six fifth-grade students from SDN Tingkir Lor 02 Salatiga participated in the study. Students' critical thinking skills were assessed using a rubric based on the FRISCO indicators: Focus, Reason, Inference, Situation, Clarity, and Overview. The results indicate that students' critical thinking skills improved through the implementation of the PBL approach supported by the Science Escape Room medium. From an initial baseline score of 52.65%, the average critical thinking score rose to 70.94% in Cycle I and subsequently to 84.42% in Cycle II. Achieving Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4) requires elementary science instruction that develops not only conceptual understanding but also students’ learning independence. However, previous studies have predominantly examined Outdoor Study and Problem-Based Learning as separate instructional approaches, leaving limited empirical evidence on their integrated application in elementary science education. This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of integrating Outdoor Study with Problem-Based Learning in supporting conceptual understanding and learning independence. A quasi-experimental pretest–posttest control group design was conducted at SD Negeri 3 Nglengkir (n = 19) and SD Negeri 2 Nglengkir (n = 17), Blora Regency, Indonesia. Data were collected using a conceptual understanding test and a learning independence questionnaire, analyzed using paired-samples t-tests, independent-samples t-tests, and MANOVA. The experimental group demonstrated significantly higher conceptual understanding and learning independence scores than the control group (p < .001). MANOVA also revealed a significant simultaneous difference between groups, Wilks' Λ = .241, F(2; 33) = 52.061, p < .001, partial η² = .759. These findings indicate that the integration of Outdoor Study and Problem-Based Learning offers a promising approach for strengthening science learning outcomes and learner autonomy. The study contributes empirical evidence for competency-oriented elementary science instruction aligned with SDG 4.
Although Kurikulum Merdeka promotes flexible, student-centered learning, the implementation of Natural and Social Sciences (IPAS) instruction in elementary schools continues to face various challenges. This study aimed to describe the challenges in implementing IPAS instruction under Kurikulum Merdeka in Grade V at SD Negeri 005 Desa Baru, Kampar Regency. The study employed a descriptive qualitative approach involving two fifth-grade teachers and six purposively selected students. Three students had IPAS scores above 75, and three had scores below 75. Data were collected through nonparticipant observation, structured interviews, and documentation and analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. Data trustworthiness was assessed through triangulation of sources and data collection techniques. The findings identified three domains of challenges related to students, teachers, and learning assessment. Student-related challenges were the most prominent, including differences in understanding, declining attention after approximately 15–20 minutes of lecturing, interest that depended on the type of activity, uneven participation, dependence on external motivation, inconsistent task management, and varying levels of learning readiness. Teacher-related challenges included the breadth of integrated science and social studies content and classroom management during group activities. Assessment involved oral quizzes and student worksheets, supplemented by remedial instruction and enrichment. Achievement scores ranged from 60 to 96, with a mastery threshold of 75. These findings underscore the need for differentiated instruction, concrete and contextually relevant instructional media, clearly assigned group roles, time management, and the use of assessment results to improve instruction. This study provides a contextual account of challenges in IPAS instruction and the need to adapt fifth-grade teaching practices. Its restriction to one school and a focused observation period highlights the need for further research covering more lessons and IPAS topics.
Integrating traditional Bugis-Makassar games into physical education has the potential to support the development of elementary school students’ fundamental movement skills and physical fitness. However, its effectiveness requires empirical testing. This article presents a simulated analysis to illustrate the evaluation of physical education instruction based on traditional Bugis-Makassar games. The research scenario follows a quasi-experimental design involving two groups of fifth-grade students, with 30 students each in the experimental and control groups. The simulated data represent fundamental movement skills and physical fitness test scores before and after the intervention. The analysis includes descriptive statistics, normality tests, homogeneity of variance tests, independent-samples t tests, and normalized gain (N-gain) calculations. The simulated results show that the experimental group’s mean fundamental movement skills score increased from 58.40 to 82.30, while the control group’s mean score increased from 59.10 to 69.20. The between-group difference in the simulated data was significant (t = 5.842; p < .001). For physical fitness, the experimental group’s mean score increased from 61.20 to 79.40, while the control group’s mean score increased from 60.80 to 68.50, with a significant between-group difference (t = 4.763; p < .001). The experimental group’s N-gain values were 0.57 for fundamental movement skills and 0.47 for physical fitness, both classified as moderate. These simulated patterns may inform hypothesis formulation and the design of evaluations for Physical Education, Sports, and Health (PJOK) instruction based on local wisdom. Conceptually, this approach connects the development of students’ motor skills with the use of traditional games in instruction. Its effectiveness requires verification through field research using appropriate instruments and documented data collection procedures.
Student engagement positively influences academic achievement, yet instruments suited to the Indonesian cultural context remain limited. This study aimed to develop a valid, reliable, and user-friendly student engagement scale for high school students. Using a quantitative descriptive design, the study involved 295 male and female students aged 15–18 years recruited through convenience sampling. The scale comprised three dimensions: behavioral, emotional, and cognitive engagement. The results showed that the scale demonstrated a good model fit based on the goodness-of-fit indices (χ2/df = 1.60; CFI = 0.966; TLI = 0.962; SRMR = 0.074; RMSEA = 0.045) and good reliability, with Cronbach’s alpha values of 0.844 for emotional engagement, 0.753 for behavioral engagement, and 0.782 for cognitive engagement. The developed scale can be used by teachers, counselors, and educational researchers to identify students’ levels of engagement and inform the development of programs to improve student engagement.
This study examined the relationship between innovative and inclusive teaching practices and student motivation and academic performance among Grade 5 and Grade 6 pupils in selected public elementary schools in Lutayan, Sultan Kudarat, Philippines, during the School Year 2025–2026. Specifically, it determined the level of innovative teaching practices in terms of teaching strategies, use of instructional materials and technology, and student engagement activities; assessed inclusive teaching practices in terms of respect for learner diversity, equal participation, and support for diverse learning needs; identified the level of student motivation; and examined the relationships between these variables and academic performance. A descriptive-correlational research design using a quantitative approach was employed. Data were gathered from 97 Grade 5 and Grade 6 pupils through a validated researcher-made questionnaire with a reliability coefficient of 0.892, indicating strong internal consistency. Descriptive statistics and correlational analysis were used to analyze the data. Findings revealed that School administrators should provide sustained professional development to strengthen teachers’ innovative and inclusive instructional approaches and allocate resources to enhance access to technology and learning materials. Teachers should consistently apply differentiated, student-centered strategies and foster welcoming, diversity-affirming classrooms to boost student motivation and equitable achievement further further. Parents and guardians should reinforce school learning at home by encouraging curiosity, effort, and consistent study habits, and maintaining open communication with teachers. Future researchers should conduct experimental or longitudinal studies to examine cause-and-effect relationships and explore additional factors influencing academic performance beyond those investigated in this study. Innovative teaching practices, inclusive teaching practices, and student motivation were rated at a high level, which means teachers effectively practice inclusive teaching by recognizing learner diversity, promoting equal participation, and providing support to students with different learning needs; teachers also frequently use innovative teaching practices, apply engaging teaching strategies, integrate instructional materials and technology, and promote active student engagement in classroom learning activities. Furthermore, significant positive relationships were found between innovative teaching practices and academic performance, inclusive teaching practices and academic performance, and student motivation and academic performance, with a moderate correlation coefficient (r = 0.57). Overall, the findings indicate that these educational variables are positively associated with academic performance among the respondents.
The ability to understand concepts is one of the important aspects in social studies learning because students are not only required to remember information, but also to be able to explain and apply concepts in various situations. However, the learning process that is still teacher-centered causes student involvement and motivation to learn is not optimal. This study aims to analyze the influence of the Teams Games Tournament (TGT) learning model assisted by Quizizz Paper Mode (Q-Card) on learning motivation and students' ability to understand concepts in food chain materials. This study uses a quantitative approach with a pre-experimental design method through a one-group pretest-posttest design. The research sample consisted of 30 students in class V of SDN Cisiram who were selected using saturated sampling techniques. Data were collected through concept comprehension tests, learning motivation questionnaires, and documentation, then analyzed using Wilcoxon, N-Gain, and effect size tests. The results showed an increase in concept comprehension ability with an average score increasing from 39.73 to 87.70, an N-Gain value of 0.78 with a high category, and an effect size of 0.617 which showed a strong influence. The application of TGT assisted by Q-Card was also able to increase students' involvement and learning motivation. Thus, the Quizizz Paper Mode (Q-Card)-assisted TGT model is effectively used as an alternative to IPAS learning to improve students' understanding of concepts and learning motivation.
Bullying is a behavior that can affect students’ sense of safety and comfort in the school environment. This activity aimed to increase elementary school students’ awareness of the forms, impacts, and prevention of bullying through a Community Service Program (Kuliah Kerja Nyata/KKN). The activity was conducted at SD 1 Way Gubak involving fifth- and sixth-grade students. A qualitative descriptive method was applied through observation, question-and-answer sessions, and documentation. The results showed that students were able to recognize bullying, particularly teasing, hitting, and hurting others, although their initial understanding mainly focused on physical actions. Materials presented using simple language and concrete examples helped broaden students’ understanding of bullying and its prevention. The activity also identified bullying experiences related to students’ social and economic conditions.
The rapid integration of digital technologies into teaching, learning, and assessment has created new avenues through which technology-facilitated gender-based violence (TFGBV) may occur in school settings. Existing scholarship has examined TFGBV mainly through the lenses of cyberbullying, digital safety, and student well-being. At the same time, emerging work has also begun to conceptualise digital assessment systems as sites of structural and institutional gendered risk. Building on this systems-level perspective, this conceptual paper shifts attention to the pedagogical and interactional layer of digital assessment, examining how teachers' assessment design and oversight decisions may shape the conditions under which TFGBV becomes more or less likely. Developed through a critical interdisciplinary literature review, the paper draws on Bronfenbrenner's ecological systems theory, digital citizenship frameworks, and classroom assessment scholarship to examine how learning management systems, peer assessment tools, collaborative online assignments, and social media-integrated assessment activities may create conditions conducive to gendered harassment, image-based abuse, and exclusionary behaviour among learners of all genders. The paper proposes the Assessment-Mediated Digital Ethics (AMDE) framework, a theoretically grounded but not yet empirically validated model integrating gender-responsive assessment design, embedded digital behavioural expectations, and structured teacher oversight. AMDE is presented as a complementary pedagogical extension of existing justice-oriented approaches to digital assessment and TFGBV, rather than as a claim of first conceptualisation. The framework provides a basis for future empirical research examining teacher-mediated assessment practices and their relationship to digital safety, ethical participation, and TFGBV risk across diverse educational contexts. Responsibility for TFGBV prevention is understood as shared among teachers, learners, schools, families, technology providers, and policymakers.

Students’ learning outcomes in Informatics remain a challenge when conventional instructional media offer limited interaction, contributing to passive engagement and difficulties understanding learning materials. This study examined changes in Grade X students’ learning outcomes after the implementation of Wordwall-assisted interactive learning media for the Computer Systems topic at SMAN 1 Sawahlunto, Indonesia. A quantitative approach was employed using a pre-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design involving 30 students from class X E4. Students completed a multiple-choice achievement test before instruction, participated in Computer Systems learning activities supported by Wordwall, and completed a posttest afterward. The intervention incorporated game-based activities to support practice and engagement; however, the research records did not specify its duration. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and a paired-samples t-test, with normalized gain (N-Gain) used to assess the level of improvement. The mean score increased from 53.67 on the pretest to 77.67 on the posttest, a difference of 24.00 points. The paired-samples t-test identified a statistically significant difference between scores (t = 8.664, df = 29, p < 0.001). The mean N-Gain was 0.538, indicating moderate improvement. These results show that students’ scores were higher after the Wordwall-assisted learning intervention. Nevertheless, the study did not include a control group, the observed change cannot be attributed to Wordwall alone; instructional or testing-related factors may also have contributed. Wordwall therefore be considered a useful supplementary medium for Informatics instruction, while further studies using control groups, larger samples, and documented intervention durations are needed to strengthen conclusions about its effectiveness.
The advancement of digital technology and the evolving demands of the professional landscape require vocational high school (SMK) students to possess a level of work readiness that aligns with the needs of the business and industrial sectors. However, preliminary research involving students in the Office Management and Business Services (MPLB) program at SMKN 2 Tuban indicates that their work readiness is not yet optimal; this is evidenced by limitations in seeking and utilizing information, as well as a mismatch between the competencies they possess and the requirements of the workplace. This situation underscores the importance of this study, which aims to identify the factors influencing the work readiness of MPLB students at SMKN 2 Tuban. Specifically, this research analyzes the impact of digital literacy, independent learning, and the use of information technology on the work readiness of these students, both individually and collectively. The study employs a quantitative approach with an explanatory research design. The population consists of MPLB students at SMKN 2 Tuban, with a sample of 207 respondents selected via simple random sampling. Data were collected using a Likert-scale questionnaire and analyzed through multiple linear regression, t-tests, F-tests, and the coefficient of determination. The findings reveal that digital literacy, independent learning, and the use of information technology each have a positive and significant impact on work readiness. Furthermore, these three factors, digital literacy, independent learning, and the use of information technology collectively exert a positive and significant influence on work readiness. Among these, independent learning emerges as the most dominant variable, highlighting that a student's ability to manage their own learning process is a crucial aspect of fostering work readiness. An adjusted R-squared value of 0.624 indicates that the three independent variables account for 62.4% of the variation in work readiness, while the remaining 37.6% is attributed to factors outside the scope of this study. In conclusion, digital literacy, independent learning, and the use of information technology collectively have a positive and significant effect on the work readiness of MPLB students at SMKN 2 Tuban. The sample included 146 students from three schools: MTs Aisyiyah Sungguminasa 47 students, MTs Madani Pao-pao 87 students, and MTs Guppi Samata with 12 students. The indicators of critical thinking skills analyzed consisted of five aspects: providing simple explanations, building basic skills, drawing conclusions, providing further explanations, and organizing strategies and tactics. The data collection technique used was a critical thinking ability test in the form of multiple-choice questions, and the data were analyzed using descriptive statistical analysis. The results show that students’ critical thinking skills in science learning at MTs in Somba Opu District are categorized as low, with an average score of 7.40. The percentage of achievement shows that providing simple explanations reached 42.61% (fair), building basic skills reached 39.72% (low), drawing conclusions reached 31.41% (low), providing further explanations reached 41.93% (fair), and organizing strategies and tactics reached 27.33% (low). These results indicate that students’ critical thinking skills need improvement.
Online learning can improve access to educational materials, but it may also create additional demands for school-aged learners who experience learning disabilities. This study examined perceived academic, emotional, behavioural, and adaptation-related outcomes of online classes among students in Grades 1-10 with learning difficulties, drawing on student, parent, and teacher reports. The dissertation describes a quantitative, cross-sectional survey involving 95 participants and the use of the Learning Disabilities Checklist (LDC), Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), Online Learning Readiness Scale (OLRS), and a researcher-developed questionnaire. Reported findings indicate difficulties with attention, comprehension, task completion, and motivation in online settings, alongside lower perceived academic performance than in traditional classrooms. Parent and teacher reports were associated with students? reported learning difficulties. A significant association was reported between student and teacher reports, χ2(1, N = 95) = 20.5, p < .001, φ = .465; a similar association was reported for student and parent reports, χ2(1, N = 95) = 21.0, p < .001, φ = .471. Student and parent reports of emotional wellbeing were also positively correlated, ρ = .674, p < .001. The findings suggest that online learning requires structured routines, accessible teaching materials, trained educators, and coordinated family-school support to better accommodate learners with learning disabilities. Results should be interpreted cautiously because detailed descriptive scores and an effect estimate for the academic comparison were not reported consistently in the dissertation.
The massive penetration of digital transactions among adolescents presents real financial vulnerability due to low understanding of Islamic economic contracts and ethics. Conventional fiqh learning is often isolated in textual normative memorization without honing students' critical reasoning skills against contemporary realities. This study aims to comprehensively analyze the implementation of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model in the learning of Fiqh Muamalah and its impact on strengthening students' critical reasoning and sharia financial literacy on digital economy issues. The research design adopts a qualitative approach with a bounded system case study at SMK Darul Musyawirin Cirebon. The research participants include Fiqh Muamalah teachers, vice principals for curriculum, and grade XI students who are directly involved in the learning cycle. Data collection was carried out through semi-structured in-depth interviews, classroom participatory observations, and review of learning portfolio documentation. Data analysis was carried out cyclically through an interactive model of open coding-based data reduction, presentation of thematic matrix data, and conclusion drawing and verification that were validated through source triangulation, member check, and trail audit. The results of the study revealed that organizing learning through the stages of authentic problem orientation (such as paylater, online loans, and digital investment), legal literature investigation, intergroup discussion-rebuttal dialectic, and value reflection succeeded in transforming students' mindsets from textual-reproductive reasoning to contextual-analytic based on postulates. Students showed a surge in competence in distinguishing murabahah margins from time-based interest, identifying the elements of riba, gharar, and maisir, and compiling simple legal arguments of istinbath al-ahkam. In addition, the structural understanding was internalized into behavioral financial literacy that encourages transaction prudence and verification of sharia legality. This instructional model proves that the integration of real issues of the digital economy into the PBL syntax effectively bridges classical fiqh doctrine with modern challenges, while offering a transformative pedagogical framework for vocational Islamic education curriculum.
