Teacher Professional Identity is critical for rural teacher recruitment and retention, but effective pathways for its construction remain limited. This study examines whether and how a holistically designed English pedagogy course, integrating theoretical learning and micro-teaching practices with guided reflective discourses, shapes the professional identities of rural pre-service teachers. A longitudinal study spanning one academic year was conducted with three rural pre-service teachers enrolled in the Excellent Teacher Program at a normal university in western China. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and reflective journals. Drawing on Varghese et al.'s identity-in-practice and identity-in-discourse as a conceptual lens, and Wenger's three modes of belonging as explanatory tools, our dual-layered framework reveals two key transformations. First, the course significantly transformed participants' initially underdeveloped Teacher Professional Identity (self-doubt, narrow grammar and vocabulary focus) into a broader, more confident and committed identity. Two patterns of change were identified: broadening of pedagogical vision from discrete skills to holistic design, and affective repositioning from fear and doubt to confidence and clarity. Second, the course functioned as a discourse-rich community of practice wherein three mechanisms operated to facilitate identity (re)formation: engagement through micro-teaching and peer collaboration, imagination through exposure to contemporary theories, and alignment through guided reflections linking practice to professional standards. The study demonstrates that a campus-based, holistically designed pedagogy course can serve as an effective pathway for the professional identity construction of rural pre-service teachers, particularly in contexts where quality field placements are not feasible. It also highlights the need to integrate such on-campus training with authentic rural experiences (e.g., short-term placements) to translate identity gains into sustained commitment to rural teaching. These findings offer insights for teacher education policy and practice, with implications for addressing global challenges in rural teacher retention.
This study is an exploration of the cultural and traditional practices of the Atswean-Asi people of Kwambai, a distinct subgroup of the Kuteb ethnic group in Taraba State, Nigeria. It interrogates the continuity and transformation of practices such as child-naming ceremonies, menstrual segregation, male circumcision, and associated taboos in the face of external influences. The main argument is that the interaction between Christianity, modernity, and indigenous practices has led to a lively mix of cultures. This has created a 'Third Space' for expression that helps maintain community identity through Selective Cultural Brokerage. The objective is to historicise and analyse these cultural practices within their socio-political and spiritual frameworks, utilising the Theory of Cultural Hybridity to interpret the data as evidence of active cultural resilience rather than passive reception. The study adopts the historical method, relying on oral traditions, ethnographic observation, and documentary sources. The paper concludes that these traditions are being restructured in a focused way. This gives us a new theoretical idea: Selective Cultural Brokerage. Community leaders work together to manage the rules of cultural continuity, which helps maintain the stability of a new, hybrid communal identity.
Ethnic social movements have long been associated with militant activities in post-independence Nigeria and identity is one of the mechanisms with which they mobilise for collective action. Using data from primary and secondary sources, this paper examines the construction and utilisation of collective identity by the Ombatse movement for the mobilisation of support in Eggonland, and the deployment of militancy in Nasarawa State of Nigeria. The Ombatse identity was built around the Ashim religious belief system of the Eggon people and portrayed as a revival of ancestral practices aimed at cleansing the Eggon people from moral vices and misfortunes. This identity attracted many Eggon people because it converged with their other identities, including as practicing Christians and Muslims. It also promised to clean out social vices, witchcraft, evil and misfortunes from Eggonland. Symbolic rituals and practices were used by the movement to build group solidarity and demarcate insiders from outsiders. The resultant widespread support attracted by the movement enabled it to mobilise its members for collective action in protecting the interests of the Eggon ethnic group. This resulted in their assumption of a sustained militant posture that brought the movement into violent conflicts with other ethnic groups and the Nasarawa State government. The paper concludes that collective identity was a powerful mechanism for the mobilisation for support by the Ombatse movement as well as for the deployment of militancy in Nasarawa State. Nonetheless, the resultant growth, popularity and militant activities of the movement also contributed towards its eventual decline.
