Music has been investigated as a potential influence on exercise performance, perceived exertion, recovery, and sleep. However, studies vary in their interventions, populations, exercise contexts, and measured outcomes. This scoping review aimed to map experimental evidence on music interventions in resistance, isometric and handgrip, aerobic exercise, acute recovery, and sleep, and to identify evidence gaps. PubMed/MEDLINE, SPORTDiscus, Scopus, and Web of Science were searched for studies published between 1980 and October 2026. Eligible studies involved human participants, compared a music intervention with a control or alternative condition, and reported exercise performance, perceived exertion, psychological responses, physiological recovery, or sleep outcomes. Screening was conducted using Rayyan. Findings were synthesised descriptively across four domains. Thirty studies involving 1,183 participants were included. Studies were published between 1981 and 2021 and examined resistance exercise (n=11), isometric and handgrip exercise (n=8), aerobic exercise and acute recovery (n=7) and sleep (n=4). The evidence maps a broad range of music interventions and outcomes, with variable findings across exercise and sleep contexts. Research gaps include limited participant diversity and insufficient investigation of sleep and recovery in athletic populations. Further studies are needed to clarify how music characteristics, individual preferences, and task demands relate to outcomes.
The dance piece “Luka Pulih” (Healing Wounds) is a contemporary dance work that explores the emotional experiences of individuals who have been bullied and subjected to social pressure from their surroundings. This work was created as an effort to visualize the psychological process of a person when facing adversity until they are able to rise again through inner strength. The purpose of this work is to convey the message about the impact of bullying on mental health and to describe the healing process as a form of courage and determination in living life. The creative method in this work includes the stages of idea gathering, movement exploration, concept formation, composition, and evaluation. The movements were developed from observations of human body expressions under emotional pressure, which were then processed into contemporary movements with varying dynamics. The accompanying music, makeup, and costumes were designed to reinforce the emotional character in each part of the work. The results of the creation show that the processing of movement, tempo dynamics, and changes in spatial composition are able to present a representation of the character's emotional transition from a phase of despair and indecision to a phase of awakening. Through the work “Luka Pulih”, the choreographer hopes that the audience can understand that the healing process from the experience of bullying requires time, acceptance, and determination. Background and Objectives: Architectural spaces are often designed with a strong visual focus, yet their sonic potential remains underexplored. Inspired by the concept of “breathing” that symbolizes life, movement, and vitality, the research project Prana aimed to create a responsive sound installation that enhances the sonic environment in architectural spaces by utilizing efficient wireless communication, sensors, and algorithms, which can evoke the feeling of breathing life into a space, providing visitors with a novel and engaging sensory experience. The designed system offered flexibility for placement and adaptation across various locations. Conducted within the tunnel of Wat Umong in Chiang Mai, Thailand, the exhibition was presented to the public, and the author collected data from visitors for the evaluation. This project serves as an example of how interactive sound design can revitalize architectural environments by creating a dialogue between sound, space, and audience. Methods: The study adopts both research-led and practice-led approaches, examining the interplay between technical design and aesthetic expression. The author collected ideas and designed the technical process of developing interactive sound installation, environmental sound design, multi-channel sound system, and wireless communication to develop the installation. The process of developing and installing the work was closely documented, while visitor experiences were assessed through direct observation and questionnaires during the exhibition period for the evaluation. The collected data was analyzed and presented as results in two aspects, sound design and system design. Results: The sound installation utilized microcontrollers (Arduino) and radio transceivers to process signals from two selected sensors (photoelectric sensor and electric gyroscope) encapsulated in small bells as triggers for algorithmically projecting prepared sounds through a multichannel sound system. The electric gyroscope has been proven to be more effective in representing the movement of the bell in the form of digital data. The collected data from the exhibition reveals that a coherent relationship between sound installation, spatial context, and environmental soundscape forms a vital foundation for innovative sound design. Audience responses emphasized that engagement and satisfaction largely depend on the immersive and experiential qualities of the work, highlighting the significance of site-responsive experimentation and clear design intentions. Conclusions: The Prana project demonstrates how interactive sound design can meaningfully enrich architectural environments by integrating technology, spatial awareness, and aesthetic intention. The findings show that when sound, space, and audience interaction are thoughtfully aligned, architectural settings can be transformed into dynamic, sensory experiences that evoke vitality and presence, much like the metaphor of breathing that inspired the work. Technically, the use of microcontrollers, wireless communication, and motion-based sensing proved effective in creating a flexible and responsive sonic system, with the electric gyroscope offering particularly reliable data for movement-triggered sound generation in this project. Audience feedback confirmed that the success of such installations depends not only on technological capability but also on the experiential coherence and immersion they create. This highlights the importance of site-specific testing, deliberate sound selection, and a clear conceptual foundation. Ultimately, the project offers a practical and artistic framework for future interactive sound installations, highlighting how responsive technologies can animate architectural spaces and foster deeper engagement through sound. Furthermore, developing simple and user-friendly interfaces can extend the accessibility of interactive sound installations.

Achieving equality in music education for people with disability calls for transformative changes to attitudes, structures and norms. Segregation and streaming remains prevalent in instrumental music education, gatekeeping access and opportunity to mainstream education opportunities. The United Nations’ Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD, Article 24) ascribes access to inclusive education for people with disability on an equal basis, with the aim of fully developing human potential. Despite this, academic theorising about inclusive education still limits how this may be practically and philosophically applied in music education. Inclusion in instrumental music education is further limited by a culture of performance excellence rather than equity and enrichment of all, and a focus on music performance outcomes rather than a deep and holistic education experience gleaned from music making and participation. Significant EDI initiatives that aim to foster inclusive environments and practices are considered and drawn to music education contexts, in particular instrumental music education in Australia, where access for students with disability at the secondary level is severely limited. Our critique extends to praxial and philosophical considerations concerning the role of education in instrumental music in schools, accessibility, and social justice considerations educators should consider in devising of inclusive curricula, pedagogies and engagement.
Background There is no general consensus on which music genre is most effective for a specific condition. The impact of music on subjective pain perception during intravenous cannulation for a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan was investigated. Methods 204 patients were assigned to one of four groups: listening to Mozart, favorite music, relaxation music, or no music (control). Pain was assessed using the Visual Analogue Scale at four time points. Results Favorite music significantly reduced pain perception both 30 s and 2 min after puncture while Mozart showed a trend towards reduced pain perception 2 min after puncture. When including only patients with baseline pain ( n = 71), a significant pain reduction was also observed in the Mozart group 2 min, with borderline significance 30 s after puncture, whereas the favorite music group not only intensified reduced pain perception 30 s and 2 min but also caused significant pain reduction immediately after puncture. No effect on pain was found for the relaxation music and control groups. Conclusions Music may be effective for pain relief in unpleasant settings involving short painful interventions. Favorite music should be considered first, whereby patients with baseline pain could also benefit from listening to Mozart, indicating a potential “Mozart effect” in this subgroup. These exploratory results need to be validated in future studies including a higher number of patients.
Music is affirmed as an entitlement across the European Union, yet what children receive varies with the resources their schools and regions can command. This paper applies Universal Design for Learning at a level where it is rarely employed: not the individual lesson, but the statutory curricular minimum itself. Taking Spain as a case study, it examines what minimum of musical participation a state could guarantee in a form from which no school and no learner could be excluded. Joining universal design with the capability approach, the article argues that such a minimum must be defined as a capability rather than as a resource and specified in competencies rather than materials or gestures. It proposes an instrument-independent curricular floor: a legally protected minimum of rhythmic, ensemble-based and improvisatory participation achievable with the body and voice alone, complementary to instrumental provision and never a substitute for it. Body percussion serves as the analytical test case rather than as the content of the entitlement. The article presents a normative and doctrinal analysis, not an empirical evaluation. It advances a central hypothesis and four derived propositions, states the observations that would confirm or disconfirm each, and specifies the research programme required to test them. Its principal claim is conditional and structural: the current architecture permits variation in what children receive, an entitlement defined in capability terms would remove one mechanism through which that variation operates, and whether it does so in practice is a question for empirical evaluation rather than for theoretical argument.
Legal challenges to affirmative action in college admissions practices are on the rise, in the US and elsewhere. Defenders of the practice tend to point to affirmative action’s efficacy as a means of creating more equal societies, or to the political motivations of those who would stop it. This article takes a different approach. It argues that college admissions procedures are a cultural practice of adjudication, and as such share key attributes with other cultural practices of adjudication, such as sporting and musical competitions. The articles advocates for analogous thinking between these different adjudication sites as a way to understand affirmative action as fundamentally fair. It draws comparisons between affirmative action in college admissions and mechanisms for fair competition in two ‘serious leisure’ sites: crown green bowling competitions, and brass band contests. In so doing, the article argues that affirmative action is not a radical proposition, but one deeply embedded in everyday ideas about fairness.
Background This paper presents an ethnographic multi-case study exploring how musical encounters in healthcare contribute to experiences of connection, focusing on the perspectives of care professionals and musicians. In addition to studies on music in healthcare that primarily examine music as an auditory stimulus and its effects on care recipients, this study focuses on performative music and considers its impact on the professional level and within the broader organization as well. Methods A variety of musical encounters were observed in three healthcare settings. The encounters were examined ethnographically by open observations and open interviews, enhanced by an elicitation technique. Results Inductive analysis revealed two major themes: threshold experiences and connective experiences , organized across three levels: within the musical encounters, among involved professionals, and within the broader organization. These themes comprise a total of 19 subthemes. Precariousness emerged as an overarching construct, articulating the dynamics between threshold and connective experiences. These findings demonstrate that musical encounters have the potential to foster connective experiences. However, the occurrence of positive impact appears to be precarious, and this precariousness is twofold: In a positive sense, it reflects the delicacy of the process within the musical encounters, due to their artistic nature. In a negative sense, it highlights the vulnerability of musical encounters, arising from insufficient sustainable support at the organizational level. Conclusions To strengthen the potential of musical encounters in healthcare to impact connective experiences, it is recommended to pay greater attention to their precarious nature – by cherishing the delicacy of the encounters themselves, while actively addressing the threats posed on the organizational level.
IntroductionThe therapeutic effects of classical music in reducing stress have been well documented, particularly in healthcare settings. However, classical music has also been used to discourage unhoused individuals from remaining in public spaces. For example, loud classical music is sometimes played at gas stations and train stations to deter unhoused individuals from lingering in these areas. Our study sought to answer the question of whether exposure to live classical music in an unhoused or homeless population would lead to a similar reduction in anxiety levels compared with staff, patients, and patients' families in a hospital setting. MethodsBrief anonymous surveys were based on the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), a validated anxiety questionnaire.A shortened five-item survey was administered to participants seated in the cafeteria of the hospital and also in dining areas of facilities serving the unhoused.A single musician played the violin/viola for 60 minutes, while audience members were asked to rate themselves on a scale of 1 to 4 in categories including content, worried, tense, calm, and upset before and after listening to at least 15 minutes of classical music. ResultsTwo groups were surveyed, including the Hospital Group (N = 47) as the comparison group and the Unhoused Group (N = 66).A Student's t-test was used for analysis.Classical music was associated with improved feelings in both groups. When comparing change scores between groups, improvements were similar for "calm" (p = 0.092), "tense" (p = 0.678), "upset" (p = 0.183), and "content" (p = 0.123)."Worried" feelings decreased significantly more in the Unhoused Group than in the Hospital Group (p = 0.037).When stratified by gender or duration of housing insecurity, there was no difference in the improvement scores. ConclusionsThis observational study suggests that exposure to live classical music is associated with a self-reported short-term improvement in anxiety levels in the unhoused population.
Abstract Maintaining minoritized expressions in the face of persecution has long been a subject of scholarship. In the Basque Country, dancers whose lives were deeply marked by the Franco dictatorship and its aftermath regularly attend plaza dances. Drawing on extensive ethnographic research in Donostia-San Sebastián, I argue that (through strict adherence to norms) these events become “breathing spaces” for participants: spaces in which language, music, and dance are vehicles for social life. Breathing spaces allow people to temporarily create the world in which they want to live, one in which the Basque language, music, and dance are predominant and secure.
Abstract In this article, I examine how I embed algorithms in instrumental and electroacoustic compositional practices to organise numerical data drawn from extra-musical environmental and cosmological contexts within musical materials and structures. I explore such material-semiotic exchanges between music and surrounding environments to sonically reconfigure the matter of the life stories suggested by Ursula Le Guin, stories that challenge anthropocentric narratives. The aim of telling life stories aurally is to both explore Baradian new materialist feminist deployments of technologies and encourage conversations and reflections on the forms, causes and effects of the relationship between humanity and its environments as proposed by Donna Haraway. Through the integration of environmental and astronomical data into musical materials and structures, real-time sound processing, octophonic spatialisation and generative interactions, the works I composed and discuss in this article unravel the sonic textures of the displacement of vegetal species across the Earth, the formation of galaxies, the physical dynamics of bird flight and the pollution of the seas, creating meaningful intersections of different media to examine how sonic practices developed within hypermedial settings may narrate more-than-human processes.
Drawing on the mutual constitution framework in cultural psychology, this study explores how three generations of an Oroqen family construct ethnic identity through nostalgic narratives elicited by family photographs. The Oroqen, one of China’s smallest ethnic minority groups, with a population of only 9,168, offer a rare example of rapid cultural change. In the span of only three generations, or roughly 80 years, they moved from a forest-based hunting and gathering way of life into full participation in a digital society. Using reflexive thematic analysis, the analysis examined in-depth interviews with five members of the family and identified three core themes. First, the main anchors of ethnic identity shifted across generations. For the grandparents, Oroqen identity was rooted in embodied memories of hunting and gathering. The parent generation centered it on preserving traditions that were fading away. The grandchild generation, by contrast, reconstructed identity through selective symbols and digital communication. Second, the link between language ability and ethnic identity changed across generations, moving from essentialist claims to pragmatic compromise and then to more fluid forms of reconstruction. Each generation also bore its own emotional burden in this process. Third, digital media created new possibilities for the grandchild generation to reshape ethnic identity. This gave rise to an intergenerational dynamic in which a decline in lived experience was accompanied by a widening range of communication. These findings extend the mutual constitution framework by showing how generational position and media environments shape identity construction. The study also highlights the value of photo-elicitation interviews for capturing generational differences in identity construction in culturally endangered contexts.
This study aims to comprehensively examine the concept of Darbeyn usûl within the broader framework of usûl theory, which essentially constitutes the foundational rhythmic architecture of traditional Turkish music. Conducted on the primary hypothesis that the phenomenon of Darbeyn usûl inherently provides composers of Turkish music with highly expansive and theoretically open-ended temporal dimension, the research initially explores the traditional classification of usûl and meticulously explicates the underlying theoretical framework of Darbeyn usûl. Historically, the established theoretical literature defines Darbeyn merely as the sequential combination of two or more distinct usûls, strictly confining its practical application to eight specific, formalized combinations. However, the empirical findings of this study critically demonstrate that such a rigid limitation is neither historically accurate nor theoretically conclusive. Driven by these crucial observations, the present study actively seeks to develop a novel, more inclusive approach to the conceptualization and theorization of Darbeyn. Employing a rigorous historical research design, the investigation meticulously analyzes primary sources, specifically examining historical musical scores preserved within the prestigious Cüneyd Kosal and Kemal Batanay archives currently housed at the İSAM Library. Through this detailed archival analysis, the research successfully identifies numerous previously undocumented Darbeyn usûl combinations that constructively challenge conventional rhythmic paradigms. Ultimately, the study concludes that the phenomenon of Darbeyn usûl, by offering composers innumerable and complex rhythmic combinations, in fact generates a vast and combinatorially open-ended rhythmic domain. This expansive domain significantly broadens the compositional palette, thereby enabling profoundly greater flexibility, structural innovation, and relative expressive freedom in the intricate process of aesthetic musical creation.
When an individual is harmed by someone in power, such as a workplace manager, it can help to identify allies—people who would offer advice or supportive action. However, ally discovery is fraught because the very people who might be most relevant—e.g., someone who reports to the same manager—might not be sympathetic and could exacerbate the harm. We examine this problem in the context of PhD students navigating advising challenges and present a social media platform called “Moa” that brings together a number of features for facilitating ally discovery. Moa’s most novel element is an audience selection process that uses what we call consent boundaries , which allow users to flexibly define each post or comment’s audience based on factors such as common social identity or lived experience, all while preserving mutual anonymity. A 3-week field study with 47 real-world users showed that Moa’s features in combination facilitated sensitive conversations about advising, with 7 out of 31 posters (22.6%) using consent boundaries. We discuss both our overall “recipe” for systems for ally discovery and the benefits of a consent-centered approach to design.
Work-integrated learning (WIL) is increasingly conceptualised as a curriculum-embedded process that may include non-placement activities designed to make professional practice visible early in a degree. This study evaluates a first-year, community-engaged WIL model embedded within a sport development degree. The curriculum integrated practitioner interaction, site visits, applied learning tasks, and structured reflection to support students’ early engagement with professional and community contexts. Using a convergent mixed-methods design (n = 89), the study examined whether participation in this curriculum was associated with students’ vocational identity and sense of belonging during transition to university. Health-related degrees, in which professional exposure is typically deferred, were used as a contextual comparison. Students who experienced the first-year WIL curriculum reported stronger vocational identity, particularly in relation to professional belonging and identification with a future profession. Qualitative findings indicated that practitioner interaction, authentic tasks, and guided reflection helped students visualise professional roles and develop clearer understandings of career pathways, whereas students without structured early exposure described a more exploratory first-year experience centred on disciplinary learning and peer connection. The study contributes to WIL scholarship by positioning first-year, non-placement, community-engaged WIL as an identity-forming process rather than solely a late-stage employability intervention. It proposes a scalable curriculum model for supporting transition, belonging, and career development through practice-visible learning.
