Lived Experiences of Caregivers of Children With Neurodevelopmental Conditions in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia: A Phenomenological Study

Roman Alemu; Kumar Rajeev; Agezegn Asegid North American journal of psychology, 2026, Vol. 28, Issue 4 https://doi.org/10.65696/001c.173379

Caregivers of children with neurodevelopmental disorders experience significant multifaceted burdens. However, little qualitative research has been done to explore caregivers’ lived experiences in relation to the effect of burden and coping strategies in the study area. The study sought to investigate caregivers’ awareness problems, coping mechanisms, and support systems in caring for children with neurodevelopmental disorders in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The study was conducted in three public, non-teaching hospitals in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Using a descriptive phenomenological technique. In-depth interviews were conducted with 15 purposively selected caregivers. The data was analyzed using Braun and Clarke’s six-phase framework technique. The analysis found six interrelated themes: Awareness and Perception of Neurodevelopmental Disorders (NDDs), Emotional Responses to Diagnosis and Adaptation, Caregiving Roles and Responsibilities, Multidimensional Burden and Challenges, Coping Strategies and Adaptation Mechanisms, and Support Systems and Structural Barriers. Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory was used to explain how personal, institutional, and systemic factors explain participants’ experiences and interpret caregiving realities. These findings underscore the call for integrated and collaborative efforts to address individual and system-level challenges among caregivers. Enhancing support systems, mitigating stigma, and correcting systemic inadequacies can improve caregiver well-being and optimize care for children with NDDs.

Xiaoye Liu; Phoebe Barnett; Patrick Nyikavaranda; Laura Burley; Brynmor Lloyd‐Evans PLOS mental health., 2026, Vol. 3, Issue 10, pp. e0000740 https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pmen.0000740

Informal carers play a vital role in supporting individuals with mental health difficulties. To provide an overarching synthesis of available evidence, this umbrella review aimed to synthesise qualitative review evidence on informal carers’ (including family members, friends, or other unpaid supporters) experiences of mental health services regarding supporting the individuals with mental health difficulties they care for and seeking support for their own wellbeing. Following the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) methodology, a meta-aggregative umbrella review was conducted. Five databases were searched up to 9th May 2025: CINAHL, MEDLINE, PsycInfo, the Cochrane Library, and Epistemonikos. The quality of primary systematic reviews was assessed using a framework adapted from the work of SmithBattle and colleagues. Findings were extracted from eligible reviews and aggregated into categories, from which higher-order synthesised findings were developed. Twelve eligible qualitative reviews were identified covering a wide range of mental health service contexts. Six synthesised findings were identified: (1) emotional complexity in the caregiving journey; (2) recognition and coping with their loved ones’ mental health difficulties; (3) multiple barriers to accessing mental health support; (4) persistent responsibilities and roles in supporting service users; (5) complex experiences of engaging with services; and (6) relational strain during the caregiving process. While some carers reported positive experiences, most described exclusion, emotional distress, and structural barriers to support. This review highlights the urgent need for mental health services to recognise, involve, and support informal carers.

Support for the growing population of family caregivers in the United States remains a challenging public health issue. With a limited workforce to support families coping with chronic and degenerative conditions, caregivers are turning to individualized approaches to gain information and emotional support. One approach that may be gaining popularity in caregiving support is the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) chatbots. This study examined caregivers' awareness and general use of AI chatbots, their use of AI chatbots for caregiving purposes, and variations in these outcomes by individual characteristics (e.g., the Big 5 personality traits, internet literacy, cognitive ability) and caregiving contextual factors (e.g., caregiving relationship, caregiving stress, the health condition of the care recipient). To this end, we used one of the waves of the Understanding America Study-Caregiving Lifecourse Experiences Assessed in Real-time (UAS-CLEAR), a longitudinal study of caregivers in the U.S. The sample consisted of 1,300 caregivers, with data collected between August and October 2025. We employed a cross-sectional, mixed-methods design, combining quantitative analysis of structured survey items with thematic coding of open-ended responses. Of the 487 respondents who reported being AI chatbot users, 25% used the technology for caregiving. Those who were more likely to use AI for caregiving were higher in openness, lower in internet literacy, lower in cognitive ability, helped with more caregiving tasks, and were more uncertain in their caregiving role. Over half (58%) used AI chatbots for information about caregiving, 34% for emotional support related to caregiving, and 37% reported other uses. Open-ended responses about individuals' experiences using AI chatbots for caregiving also revealed that the most common reason for use was information seeking. In addition, caregivers found the chatbot support to be useful, while acknowledging some limitations of their use. Future research should examine perceptions of AI chatbots among non-users, the mechanisms linking individual traits to caregiving-related chatbot use, and the longitudinal effects of such use on caregiver well-being.

Understanding America Study-Caregiving Lifecourse Experiences Assessed in Real-time (UAS-CLEAR)، که یک مطالعه طولی درباره مراقبان در ایالات متحده است، مورد استفاده قرار گرفت.
