Background: Examination periods can coincide with psychological stress, sleep difficulties, and uncertainty about academic performance. Students may continue to feel tense while waiting for results or further assessment, particularly when they are unsure how well they answered the examination questions. Objective: To describe students’ reported stress and sleep difficulties before and after examinations at Gori State University and European University, and to explore themes appearing in anonymous open-ended questionnaire responses. Methods: The study is described as a comparative questionnaire study involving 50 students, with 25 participants from each university. Anonymous questionnaires were administered before and after an examination. The questionnaire asked about stress, sleep, feeling tired or sleepless, waiting for further assessment or results, and students’ perceptions of how they had answered the test. Results: The preliminary account supplied for this draft indicates that sleep difficulty associated with stress and concern while waiting for further assessment were recurring concerns in open-ended responses. The initial estimate was approximately 5% of students reporting satisfaction with their answers. With 50 participants, the closest possible whole-person counts are 2 students (4%) or 3 students (6%); the original questionnaires must be checked to establish which count is correct. No further frequency estimates or statistical tests are reported because participant-level data were not provided for analysis. Conclusion: Anonymous pre- and post-examination questionnaires may help educators identify students’ concerns about sleep, stress, and uncertainty. Findings should be interpreted as preliminary until response counts, scoring procedures, ethics information, and the exact number of students reporting satisfaction are verified.
Background Sleep problems are common among university students due to academic stress, lifestyle factors, and psychological distress and may adversely affect physical and mental health, academic performance, and social functioning. Mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) have increasingly been used as a non-pharmacological approach to improve sleep health; however, previous findings remain inconsistent, and evidence specifically addressing sleep quality in university students remains limited. This study aimed to systematically evaluate the effects of MBIs on sleep quality in university students and explore factors that may account for variations in intervention effects. Methods We searched seven databases—PubMed, Web of Science, EBSCO, the Cochrane Library, Scopus, Embase, and ScienceDirect—from inception to June 26, 2026. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating MBIs for sleep quality in university students were included. Two reviewers independently conducted study selection, data extraction, and risk-of-bias assessment using the RoB 2 tool. Meta-analysis was conducted in Stata 17.0 using a random-effects model. Subgroup analyses, sensitivity analyses, publication bias assessment, and GRADE assessment were also performed. Results Ten RCTs involving 638 university students were included, with 335 participants in the intervention groups and 303 in the control groups. MBIs significantly improved sleep quality [SMD = −0.97, 95% CI (−1.43, −0.51), p < 0.001], although substantial heterogeneity was observed ( I 2 = 85.1%). Subgroup analyses revealed statistically significant between-group differences with respect to sleep-outcome measurement instrument ( p = 0.001), intervention type ( p = 0.009), and session duration ( p = 0.030), indicating that these variables may partially account for the observed heterogeneity. Sensitivity analyses supported the robustness of the pooled results. Egger’s test revealed no evidence of significant publication bias ( p = 0.270). The certainty of the evidence was rated as low according to the GRADE framework. Conclusion MBIs may improve sleep quality in university students. However, given the substantial heterogeneity and low certainty of evidence, further high-quality RCTs are needed to confirm these findings. Abstract Objectives We hypothesized that benzodiazepine/z-drug (BZRA) dose, insomnia symptoms, and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) risk are associated with cognitive performance above and beyond other modifiable dementia risk factors. Methods In this cross-sectional study, we used baseline data from recruited patients without dementia from one VA site and one academic site to analyze regression models based on previously published risk factors for cognitive impairment, adapted to include sleep and benzodiazepine usage interactions. Changes in R 2 and model fit (F-tests) were examined for four nested regression models predicting Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), Trail Making Test (TMT)-A, TMT-B, and Digit Symbol Substitution Test (DSST). Base Models included common dementia risk factors. Model-2 = Base + Insomnia Severity Index; Model-3 = Model-2 + dose; Model-4 = Model-3 + OSA risk; and Model-5 = Model-4 + OSA-BZRA. Results R 2 for the base model predicting MMSE was 0.139 (n = 313), 0.241 for TMT-A (n = 298), 0.229 for TMT-B (n = 287), and 0.189 for DSST (n = 285). Model-5 R 2 was 0.142 for MMSE, 0.246 for TMT-A, 0.238 for TMT-B, and 0.190 for DSST, with all F-test p-values >.145. Conclusions Sleep disorder variables did not significantly explain additional variation in cognition performance. Studies with a wider range of cognitive performance are needed.
Sleep and circadian disturbances in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) affect patients and caregivers, but clinical action depends on the syndrome, measurement, and outcome under consideration. This narrative review links sleep assessment to indication-based care while distinguishing symptomatic benefit, physiological target engagement, and disease modification. A purposive literature search was supplemented by targeted checks of PubMed-indexed and original publisher records through 4 October 2026. Selected studies are described by population, AD ascertainment, comparator, and measured endpoint rather than assigned formal evidence-certainty grades. Actigraphy characterizes behavioral rest–activity patterns; melatonin timing and temperature rhythms address endogenous circadian physiology under controlled conditions. Polysomnography and quantitative electroencephalography characterize respiratory events, sleep architecture, and oscillatory activity. These measurements inform different questions and do not independently assign AD etiology or cognitive-functional stage. Clinical priorities include confirmed obstructive sleep apnea, cognition-adapted insomnia care, irregular sleep timing, medication-related effects, parasomnias, limb symptoms, and excessive daytime sleepiness. Interpretation incorporates hypoxemia, treatment exposure, comorbidity, caregiver support, and competing diagnoses. Randomized sleep benefits remain distinct from observational cognitive associations or exploratory imaging and cerebrospinal fluid changes. Human and animal studies of arousal circuits, protein dynamics, inflammation, and fluid transport provide mechanistic context, with conflicting results interpreted according to the actual experimental endpoint. The review provides a clinically organized account of selected evidence, not a comprehensive treatment ranking. Sleep care and cognitive-etiologic assessment should proceed in parallel, with follow-up matched to patient function, safety, and the specific treatment goal.
Background Sleep disturbances and oral health problems are both prevalent public health concerns with substantial impacts on quality of life and systemic health. However, population-based evidence examining the independent associations between multiple dimensions of oral health and multiple sleep outcomes remains limited. This study investigated the associations between oral health indicators and sleep disturbances among Canadian adults using nationally representative survey data. Methods We utilized data from adults aged 18 years and older who completed the 2017–2018 Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS). Four oral health indicators were assessed: self-reported oral health, oral pain, bleeding gums, and dry mouth. Four sleep outcomes were examined: short sleep duration, insomnia symptoms, unrefreshing sleep, and difficulty staying awake. Multivariable logistic regression models were used, with progressive adjustment for sociodemographic factors, health status, and health behaviors. Results All four oral health indicators were significantly associated with most sleep outcomes in the full adjusted model. For short sleep duration, the strongest association was observed for poor oral health (AOR: 1.623). For insomnia symptoms, dry mouth (AOR: 1.904) and oral pain (AOR: 1.826) exhibited the strongest associations. For unrefreshing sleep, oral pain (AOR: 1.937) and dry mouth (AOR: 1.808) were associated with higher odds of reporting unrefreshing sleep. For difficulty staying awake, dry mouth (AOR: 1.720) and oral pain (AOR: 1.701) showed the strongest associations. Conclusion Oral health problems are associated with multiple dimensions of sleep disturbance. These findings highlight the need for integrated care and complementary screening between dental and sleep medicine.
This study aimed to develop a Japanese version of the Sleep Problem Acceptance Questionnaire (SPAQ-J) and assess its reliability and validity. The SPAQ-J was developed through a forward-backward translation procedure with permission from the original authors. The sample included 861 adults with insomnia who completed questionnaires on experiential avoidance, insomnia symptoms, dysfunctional beliefs about sleep, sleep-related safety behaviors, insomnia catastrophizing, and pre-sleep arousal. Confirmatory factor analysis confirmed that the SPAQ-J retained the two-factor structure of the original version (CFI = 0.972, TLI = 0.958, RMSEA = 0.082, SRMR = 0.059): Activity Engagement and Willingness. Although internal consistency was adequate (Activity Engagement: α = 0.868, ω = 0.870; Willingness: α = 0.895, ω = 0.895), test-retest reliability was below the recommended threshold (Activity Engagement: ICC = 0.586, Willingness: ICC = 0.589). In terms of construct validity, Willingness moderately correlated with all scales, whereas Activity Engagement showed moderate-to-weak correlations. Hierarchical multiple regression analysis revealed that adding the SPAQ-J subscales significantly enhanced the explanatory power. Measurement invariance analysis across sex and age groups showed no significant changes in the fit indices, indicating stability. These findings suggest that the SPAQ-J is a valid and partially reliable measure of psychological flexibility related to sleep problems in the Japanese population.
Insomnia is a prevalent sleep disorder with growing evidence implicating immune and inflammatory processes. Elevated C-reactive protein (CRP), a marker of systemic inflammation, is frequently observed in individuals with poor sleep, yet the genetic basis of this relationship remains unclear. This study aims to characterize the shared genetic architecture between insomnia and CRP using large-scale genomic data. CRP levels were significantly elevated in 130 611 individuals with insomnia compared with 327 375 controls in the UK Biobank. Genome-wide genetic correlation, pleiotropic analysis, colocalization, Mendelian randomization (MR), and functional annotation were used to characterize shared genetic architecture and biological pathways. Insomnia and CRP showed a significant positive genetic correlation. We identified 125 pleiotropic loci jointly associated with insomnia and CRP. Functional annotation implicated chromatin organization and nucleosome assembly, while pathway analyses highlighted immune signaling, cellular senescence, and programmed cell death. Colocalization analysis provided support for shared causal variants at six loci in or near APOE, HLA-B, NLGN1, AK5/DNAJB4, FAM114A2/GRIA1, and SATB1. Bidirectional MR provided stronger evidence for a directional relationship from insomnia liability to elevated CRP than in the reverse direction. This study uncovers shared genetic mechanisms linking insomnia and systemic inflammation. The directional genetic relationship from insomnia liability to elevated CRP suggests that sleep dysfunction may contribute to inflammatory processes.
Abstract Youth irritability, characterized as proneness to anger/frustration, is associated with negative mental health outcomes. This study identified irritability trajectories across the transition to early adolescence and applied machine learning to identify preadolescent predictors of irritability trajectories. Data are from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study, a large longitudinal study that tracks youth development from preadolescence ( n = 11,862, ages 8.92–11.08 years, M = 9.91, SD = 0.62). The baseline sample was 47.83% female ( n = 5,680), 63.35% White, 15.74% Black, 12.07% Biracial or Multiracial, 2.32% Asian, and 20.30% Hispanic. Using parent-report youth irritability scores across four years, latent class growth analysis (LCGA) identified four distinct irritability trajectories: low stable ( n = 8,692, 73.28%), high decreasing ( n = 1,083, 9.13%), low increasing ( n = 1,449, 12.22%), and high chronic ( n = 638, 5.38%). Machine learning approaches generated predictive models for irritability trajectories, including baseline youth psychopathology, physical health, neurocognitive abilities, psychosocial environment, demographics, parent psychopathology, and brain structure metrics. The models demonstrated strong performance in detecting probability of being in the high chronic and low stable trajectories but poorer performance in classifying the irritability trajectories characterized by change. The most prominent predictors included youth externalizing and internalizing problems, parent psychopathology, and sleep problems. Findings provide insight into preadolescent predictors of irritability across a critical developmental period.
Background: Sleep disturbances impact outcomes in major depressive disorder (MDD). This cross-sectional study evaluated subjective sleep quality and habits in adolescents with MDD and their associations with suicide attempt (SA) and non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI).Methods: Sixty-eight adolescents aged 13–18 years with MDD were classified as NSSI-only, SA-only, and combined. Clinical severity and depressive symptoms were measured with Clinical Global Impression– Severity scale and Children’s Depression Rating Scale–Revised (CDRS-R). Self-harm and suicidality were evaluated using Inventory of Statements About Self-Injury and Columbia-Suicide Severity Rating Scale. Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and Children’s Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ) assessed past-month sleep quality and past-week sleep habits. Results: Participants had poor sleep quality (89.7%) and disturbed sleep habits (83.8%), without group differences. CSHQ scores correlated moderately with lifetime NSSI frequency (r = .36, P = .003), whereas PSQI scores correlated weakly (r = .28, P = .023). PSQI scores were modestly related to past-month suicidal ideation severity (r = .28, P = .022). In hierarchical regressions controlling for sedative medications and CDRS-R scores, CSHQ (β = 0.299, P = .022) and PSQI (β = 0.248, P = .047) accounted for incremental variance in lifetime NSSI frequency. Conclusion: Sleep problems are common among adolescents with MDD, suggesting a clinical feature rather than a subgroup-specific trait. Sleep disturbance was associated with lifetime NSSI burden beyond depression severity, indicating a clinically relevant assessment domain. Prospective longitudinal studies should clarify temporal and bidirectional relationships with self-harm outcomes.
Inventory of Statements About Self-Injury و Columbia-Suicide Severity Rating Scale ارزیابی گردید.
Background: As the war in Ukraine has become protracted, civilians have been forced to adapt to chronic danger, uncertainty, and repeated military threat. This prospective study examined mental health symptom change during a pivotal six-month period in 2023, encompassing the high hopes surrounding the rise of the Ukrainian counteroffensive and the subsequent disappointment of its stall. Methods: We conducted a two-wave online longitudinal study of 208 Ukrainian civilian adults (80.8% female; mean age 29.4 years) assessed in June 2023 and November 2023. Primary outcomes were generalised anxiety, depression, and somatic symptoms. We further examined whether symptom change was associated with baseline sleep disturbance, trait resilience, and sociodemographic factors. Subjective threat perception, confidence in military success, and objective indicators of military threat were included as contextual variables. Results: Confidence in military success declined significantly across the two waves, while objective indicators of military threat, including artillery attacks and air raid alarms, increased. Subjective threat perception remained stable. Despite this unfavourable context, generalised anxiety, depression, and somatic symptoms decreased on average over time. Individual differences in symptom change were partly associated with baseline characteristics. Higher baseline sleep disturbance predicted smaller reductions in anxiety and depression. Female sex was associated with smaller reduction in depression, and older age with greater reduction in anxiety. Trait resilience and socioeconomic factors were not significantly associated with symptom change. Conclusion: The findings suggest that anxiety, depression, and somatic symptoms may decrease over time even under worsening objective wartime conditions. This pattern is more consistent with partial adaptation under chronic threat than with improvement in external circumstances. Sleep disturbance emerged as a robust predictor of less favourable symptom change, highlighting sleep as a potentially important target for mental health support under prolonged war-related stress.
Primary insomnia is a common sleep–wake disorder characterized by impaired sleep initiation and maintenance with associated daytime dysfunction, while current pharmacological treatments are often limited by safety and tolerability concerns. This study examined the independent and combined effects of a sensory-mediated non-pharmacological intervention using Viola odorata L. and an oral botanical preparation derived from Papaver somniferum L. seeds in adults with primary insomnia. This exploratory, prospective, randomized, three-arm, component-based integrative trial enrolled 90 participants aged 18–65 years, randomized equally to Viola odorata –based Natūl therapy, Papaver somniferum seed powder, or combination therapy and treated for four weeks. Sleep outcomes—including Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), daytime dysfunction (VAS), and number of nocturnal awakenings—were assessed at baseline and post-intervention and analysed using a per-protocol framework with non-parametric methods. Recurrence rate has been assessed after three months of treatment. All three interventions were associated with significant improvements across all sleep parameters (all p < 0.001), with large within-group effect sizes (r ≈ 0.86 – 0.89). Between-group comparisons of change scores demonstrated significantly greater improvements with combination therapy compared with either monotherapy (η 2 ≈ 0.21–0.26). Viola odorata –based Natūl monotherapy produced improvements comparable to oral Papaver somniferum therapy for most outcomes. No clinically meaningful safety concerns were observed. Sensory-mediated therapy using Viola odorata L. and oral administration of Papaver somniferum L. seeds are effective in the management of primary insomnia, with combination therapy providing additive sustained with less recurrence rate and supporting a graded, personalized integrative treatment approach.
Background and Objective Sleep problems are common in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and may contribute to behavioural difficulties. In this study, sleep problems were examined to determine whether they predict behavioural symptoms independently of autism severity. Methods This retrospective study included children with ASD followed at a child and adolescent psychiatry outpatient clinic. Sleep problems were assessed using the Children’s Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ), autism related behavioural symptoms using the Krug’s Autism Behavior Checklist (ABC), and autism severity using the Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS). Multiple linear regression and correlation analyses were performed. Results Significant differences were observed between ASD severity groups in ABC sensory, relating, and total scores (all p<0.05). CARS scores were positively correlated with CSHQ total scores (r=0.243, p=0.018). CSHQ total scores were also positively correlated with ABC subscale scores (all p<0.05). In hierarchical regression analyses, autism severity significantly predicted behavioural symptoms in the first model (β=0.426, p<0.001). After adding CSHQ total scores, both autism severity (β=0.385, p<0.001) and sleep problems (β=0.354, p=0.001) remained significant predictors of behavioural symptoms. Conclusions Sleep problems were associated with both autism severity and behavioural symptoms in children with ASD. Furthermore, sleep disturbances remained an independent predictor of behavioural symptoms after controlling for autism severity. In children with ASD, identifying and addressing sleep problems may be important.
Background and Objective Sleep disorders are common and frequently under-recognized in clinical practice. Existing screening instruments are often disorder-specific or require lengthy assessments. This study aimed to develop and validate the Seoul Sleep Questionnaire (SSQ), a brief screening instrument for common sleep disorders. Methods We retrospectively reviewed data from 1,726 adults who underwent polysomnography at a tertiary sleep clinic between November 2018 and February 2020. Participants completed the SSQ and established sleep questionnaires. Item reduction, exploratory factor analysis (EFA), reliability testing, validity analyses, and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analyses were performed. To address diagnostic imbalance, sensitivity analyses were conducted using a diagnosis-balanced subsample. Results Item reduction yielded a final 7-item questionnaire. EFA supported a three-factor structure representing obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), insomnia, and parasomnia domains, with good model fit (comparative fit index=0.999, Tucker–Lewis index=0.997, root mean square error of approximation=0.013). Internal consistency was acceptable (McDonald’s ω=0.83). SSQ scores showed significant correlations with subjective and polysomnography-derived sleep measures. The OSA subscale was associated with apnea-hypopnea index (r=0.429, p<0.01), while the insomnia subscale correlated with sleep onset latency and wake after sleep onset. ROC analyses demonstrated acceptable diagnostic performance for OSA (area under the curve [AUC]=0.787) and insomnia (AUC=0.741), and high discriminative ability for parasomnia (AUC=0.919). Comparable results were observed in the diagnosis-balanced subsample. Conclusions The SSQ demonstrated acceptable psychometric properties and diagnostic performance as a brief screening questionnaire in an OSA-dominant tertiary sleep clinic population. Further validation in primary care, community-based, and independent external populations is warranted before broader implementation.
Aim: This study aimed to explore women's self-reported paranormal experiences during the postpartum period, examine the cultural meanings attributed to these experiences, and descriptively assess levels of paranormal belief using the Paranormal Beliefs Scale (PBS).Methods: A convergent mixed-methods design was employed. Qualitative data were collected through face-toface, semi-structured interviews and analyzed using Braun and Clarke's thematic analysis. Quantitative data were collected using the PBS and analyzed using descriptive statistics. Forty-three postpartum women who reported paranormal or unusual visual experiences within the first 42 days after childbirth were recruited through snowball sampling. Results: Five themes emerged from the qualitative analysis: beliefs associated with the experiences, descriptions of perceived visual experiences, physical responses, psychological responses, and preventive practices. Participants commonly reported seeing black shadows, unfamiliar human-like figures, or animals, usually at night during transitions between wakefulness and sleep. Physical responses included immobility, palpitations, breathlessness, and sensations of suffocation, whereas psychological responses included fear, anxiety, sleep disturbance, and persistent distress. Participants also described religious, traditional, and medical coping practices. The mean PBS score was 27.6 ± 3.26.Conclusion: The findings suggest that women's interpretations of these experiences are shaped by cultural beliefs. Healthcare professionals should acknowledge such experiences without automatically attributing them to psychiatric pathology and provide culturally sensitive, evidence-based counselling to reduce fear and anxiety, discourage potentially harmful traditional practices, and promote maternal and infant wellbeing.
This study investigated the extent to which number of psychiatric disorders and specific comorbidities in patients receiving the Transdiagnostic Intervention for Sleep and Circadian Dysfunction (TSC) predicted symptom/impairment severity and treatment outcome. This secondary analysis drew from a subset of 489 patients in Community Mental Health Centers (CMHCs) with serious mental illness (SMI) and sleep/circadian problems who had participated in a randomized controlled trial of TSC. Of these patients, 253 received Immediate TSC and 236 received usual care followed by delayed treatment (UC-DT). Some patients received Standard TSC (N = 149) while others received Adapted TSC (N = 340). Patients' baseline/pre-treatment and post-treatment scores for psychiatric symptoms, sleep disturbance, sleep-related impairment, overall sleep health, and functional impairment were analyzed. Patient-reported data on history of psychiatric diagnoses were also used. At baseline, patients with more disorders had significantly worse psychiatric symptom scores (b = 2.27, SE = 0.39, p<.001), marginally greater sleep disturbance (b = 0.57, SE = 0.32, p=.073) (but only at the nominal level), significantly greater sleep-related impairment (b = 1.25, SE = 0.34, p<.001), significantly worse overall sleep health (b=-0.20, SE = 0.06, p=.001), and significantly greater functional impairment (b = 0.32, SE = 0.11, p=.005). Number of psychiatric disorders was not associated with treatment outcome or differences in benefits between Standard and Adapted TSC. When analyzed independently, the most common psychiatric disorder groups all demonstrated significantly more improvement in the Immediate TSC group than in the UC-DT group on sleep disturbance and sleep-related impairment. These results build on strong evidence that transdiagnostic sleep treatment is an important approach to treating populations with comorbid SMI and sleep/circadian problems.

Mood follows a well-documented circadian rhythm. Sleep timing and duration are similarly shaped by biological and social factors. However, large-scale, real-world data on how these patterns vary across demographic groups remain limited. Prior studies often rely on laboratory data or social media linguistic analysis, which lack direct self-reports. This study examines hourly, weekly, and demographic trends in mood and sleep duration reports using one of the largest online datasets of directly self-reported behavioral health: 468,092 Lumosity users (aged 20–79) who reported daily mood (−2 to +2 scale) and sleep duration (≤5–9 + hours). We assessed variation by time of day, day of week, and interactions of age, gender, and race/ethnicity using ANOVA and linear regression. Mood was higher among users reporting in the afternoon and evening, and lower from late night through morning. Mood showed a U-shaped pattern with age, consistent throughout the week, and longer sleep duration was linked to better mood reports throughout the day and week. Sleep duration varied by time of report and by day of week, with longer durations in the afternoon/evening and on weekends. Women reported longer sleep overall, Black users reported shorter sleep, and sleep duration declined from young adulthood through midlife before rising slightly among older users. Higher mood was associated with longer sleep, and the weekday-weekend mood difference was larger among users reporting longer sleep. These findings demonstrate the value of large-scale digital data for public health insight, highlighting demographic disparities in sleep and the importance of midlife as a key intervention period. Because the sample is likely skewed toward higher educational attainment and health engagement, disparity estimates may understate true population-level differences. The late-night peak in negative affect aligns with literature on nocturnal suicide risk, though this nonclinical sample cannot directly speak to clinical risk or crisis-service need.
