Eleftherios P. Diamandis F1000Research, 2026, Vol. 15, pp. 1732 https://doi.org/10.12688/f1000research.191633.1

As conversational artificial intelligence models become ubiquitous fixtures in professional and personal workflows, the nature of human-tool interaction has the potential to gradually shift from mechanical utility to parasocial dependency. While existing literature frequently addresses adverse events related to data privacy, algorithmic bias, and intellectual deskilling, the pathopsychological sequelae of sustained AI integration remain largely unexamined. Here, we describe and preliminarily characterize the AI Assistant Syndrome, a human psychiatric construct encompassing acute chatbot-induced anxiety and mental exhaustion. This preliminary description will guide future systematic investigations to recognize, prevent, and treat this syndrome.

AIMS AND METHOD: Daridorexant is a dual orexin receptor antagonist recently licensed for chronic insomnia disorder. Guidelines recommend it as a second-line treatment for insomnia, after cognitive-behavioural therapy. Initial trials excluded common comorbidities despite comorbid insomnia being the norm, not the exception. The long-term benefit from daridorexant remains unclear, with few long-term trials. We aimed to assess long-term outcomes in those with comorbid insomnia. This was a retrospective analysis of 38 patients with insomnia who commenced daridorexant. Mental health disorders were common in those referred. Adverse events and a range of insomnia outcomes were assessed. RESULTS: The mean follow-up period was 10.5 months. Of the 38 patients in the study, 95% had comorbid insomnia; 55% experienced benefit from the daridorexant, but 24% discontinued because of side-effects, including vivid dreams, fatigue and worsening anxiety. Three patients experienced worsening mood, one of which included suicidality. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: Daridorexant can be effective for those with comorbid insomnia, but side-effects may be more common than previously reported.

Background Emotional distress is common around clinical procedures, cancer supportive care, and health-professions training. Aromatherapy and music are easy to deliver, yet it remains unclear when combining them is worthwhile and whether the combination offers more than either component alone. Objective To synthesize experimental studies of aromatherapy combined with music or sound published from January 2019 through September 7, 2026; identify the populations and settings in which benefits were most consistent; and separate benefit over inactive care from incremental benefit over a single sensory intervention. Methods We searched PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, APA PsycINFO, Scopus, Web of Science Core Collection, CENTRAL, CNKI, and Dentistry & Oral Sciences Source from January 1, 2019, to September 7, 2026. Randomized trials and controlled nonrandomized or quasi-experimental studies were eligible when they included an identifiable arm combining aromatherapy with music or sound and reported emotional-distress or related physiological outcomes. Two reviewers independently screened records, extracted data, and assessed risk of bias. Clinical and methodological heterogeneity precluded meta-analysis; findings were synthesized narratively using SWiM guidance. Results Twenty-four studies involving 2,530 participants from 12 countries or regions were included. Of these, 21 were randomized studies and three were controlled nonrandomized or quasi-experimental studies. The evidence covered procedural and perioperative care, dentistry, nursing education and occupational stress, and cancer or palliative care. Results were most consistent in pediatric dentistry, magnetic resonance imaging, nursing examinations or skills testing, and some repeated cancer-support programs. Two lithotripsy trials and the adult endodontic study did not show a clear benefit. Although combined treatment often outperformed inactive care, it frequently failed to outperform aromatherapy or music alone. Adverse events, acceptability, and economic outcomes were poorly reported. Conclusion Combined aromatherapy and music or sound showed the most consistent reductions in anxiety or distress in pediatric dentistry, MRI examinations, nursing examinations or skills training, and some perioperative and cancer-support settings. Clear benefit was not demonstrated in lithotripsy or endodontic care; in general surgery, pregnancy non-stress testing, coronary angiography, palliative care, and outpatient oncology, the combination generally did not outperform a single modality. Future adequately powered factorial trials should standardize the interventions and use prespecified between-group comparisons, longer follow-up, and systematic reporting of adverse events and costs. Acupuncture combined with transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation for chronic postpartum insomnia comorbid with emotional disorders: a case report

Qin Lyu; Re-Yi-Han-Gu-Li Ju-Lai-Ti; Shumin Wang; Miaomiao Jing; Yi-Fei Li; E. Zhou; … Frontiers in Medicine, 2026, Vol. 13 https://doi.org/10.3389/fmed.2026.1918028

Postpartum women constitute a vulnerable population in whom insomnia comorbid with emotional disorders such as anxiety and depression is disproportionately prevalent, attributable to hormonal fluctuations, environmental changes, and social role transitions. This comorbidity significantly increases their long-term risk of mental health disorders. Given the safety concerns of sedative-hypnotic medications, non-pharmacological therapies are the first-line treatment for this population. We report the case of a 34-year-old woman with chronic postpartum insomnia comorbid with emotional disorders, who provided written informed consent for the publication of her de-identified clinical data and received 4 weeks of combined acupuncture and transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) treatment. Clinical assessments were performed at baseline, week 2, week 4 (end of treatment), and week 8 (4-week post-treatment follow-up) using validated scales including the PSQI, ISI, and HAMA, among others. After 4 weeks of treatment, the patient demonstrated significant improvements in objective sleep quality and anxiety symptoms, while subjective insomnia perception and depressive symptoms remained partially unresolved. Notably, all clinical outcomes continued to improve to near-normal levels during the follow-up period without any additional intervention, and no adverse events were recorded. This case demonstrates that combined acupuncture and taVNS is a safe and effective intervention for chronic postpartum insomnia comorbid with emotional disorders, with a favorable sustained therapeutic effect after treatment cessation, offering a valuable alternative for non-pharmacological management in this population.

Objective Insomnia causes daytime impairment and reduced quality of life. We evaluated the comparative efficacy and safety of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) treatment strategies for insomnia. Methods Nine databases (PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane CENTRAL, ClinicalTrials.gov , CNKI, Wanfang, VIP, SinoMed) were searched through January 2026 for randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Primary outcomes were ISI and PSQI scores; secondary outcomes included clinical efficacy and adverse events (AEs). Data were synthesized using frequentist network meta-analysis. Results Twelve RCTs involving 1,260 participants were included, evaluating five strategy nodes: TCM alone, TCM plus Western medicine (WM), WM alone, placebo, and CBT-I. For ISI, TCM plus WM ranked highest (SUCRA 89.7%) and significantly improved scores versus placebo (OR 2.84, 95% CI 1.42–5.68) and WM (OR 1.96, 95% CI 1.08–3.56). For PSQI, TCM plus WM showed the highest probability of improvement (SUCRA 71.9%) with greater reduction versus placebo (MD −2.31, 95% CI −3.65 to −0.97). For clinical efficacy, SUCRA values were 86.6% for TCM plus WM, 77.2% for TCM, 20.9% for WM, and 15.3% for placebo. For AEs (higher SUCRA indicating better safety), SUCRA values were 94.8% for WM, 43.9% for TCM plus WM, 31.1% for placebo, and 30.2% for TCM. Sensitivity analysis excluding secondary insomnia confirmed robust findings. Conclusion Integrated TCM-WM and TCM therapies demonstrate clinical efficacy and acceptable safety for insomnia management. Systematic review registration The review protocol was prospectively registered in the International Platform of Registered Systematic Review and Meta-analysis Protocols (INPLASY) (Registration number: INPLASY202680041; DOI: 10.37766/inplasy2026.8.0041 ).

۶۸) و WM (OR ۱.

Research on the impact of generative AI interaction modes on the improvement of school-age children’s early reading ability and college students’ auxiliary intervention

Yanjiao Dong; Guoyan Li Frontiers in Public Health, 2026, Vol. 14 https://doi.org/10.3389/fpubh.2026.1926167

Background Against the backdrop of digital empowerment, generative artificial intelligence has been widely applied in school-age children’s reading education, and digital reading has become one of the primary types of environmental exposure for school-age children. However, school-age children face challenges such as insufficient age-appropriate content and uncontrollable physical and mental strain. There is an urgent demand for a public health intervention model that balances reading-related health benefits, prevents and controls digital exposure risks, avoids physical and mental health impairments, and adapts to school-age children from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds. Methods A retrospective control study design was used in this study. A total of 100 cases of school-age children aged 6–12 were collected from the standardized intervention archive of our institution from September 2025 to December 2025. According to the intervention plan actually accepted in the archive records, they were divided into the collaborative intervention group and the AI-only reading group with 50 cases in each group. In the AI-only reading group, the recorded intervention is purely generative AI independent reading intervention (college students are only responsible for equipment operation and maintenance, and do not participate in reading guidance and emotional intervention), while in the collaborative intervention group, the recorded intervention is the structured auxiliary collaborative intervention of the whole process of generative AI voice multi-round interactive reading combined with standardized training for college students. The intervention period is 12 weeks, three times a week, and each time is 20–25 min. Retrospective analysis of longitudinal data at baseline, 6 weeks of intervention, 12 weeks of follow-up and 4 weeks of follow-up, with the comprehensive score of early reading as the only preset main outcome index, repeated measurement analysis of variance, independent sample t -test and chi-square test were used to analyze the inter-group and time effects, Cohen’s d was used to evaluate the effect, and the test level was α = 0.05. Results Retrospective archive data shows that, after intervention, the collaborative intervention group achieved significantly higher composite early reading scores, phonological awareness, vocabulary comprehension accuracy, reading attention duration and reading interest scores than the AI-only reading group ( p < 0.05). The main effects of group, time and the group-time interaction were all highly statistically significant ( p < 0.01), with an effect size of Cohen’s d = 0.50 representing a moderate intervention effect. The collaborative intervention group also showed significantly higher intervention adherence rate, AI interaction completion rate, reading task completion rate and frequency of active participation than the AI-only reading group ( p < 0.05). In terms of digital health-related outcomes, the collaborative intervention group had significantly lower incidence of adverse psychological states, incidence of prodromal signs of visual fatigue and digital eye strain symptoms, and study dropout rate ( p < 0.05). Among the digital health-related safety indicators, the incidence of negative emotions, visual fatigue and research dropout rate were significantly lower than those of the AI-only reading group ( p < 0.05). The archived records showed that the whole screen duration was strictly in compliance, and there was no privacy leakage and serious adverse events. The 10% lost visit rate was controllable, and the complete rate of informed consent and the qualified rate of implementation were all 100%, and there was no privacy leakage and serious adverse events. Conclusion The generative AI interaction mode paired with college student auxiliary support is associated with sustained improvement school-age children’s core early reading ability via cumulative short-term follow-up effects. Meanwhile, this collaborative model enables effective management of digital environmental exposure risks and may reduce risks related to visual and psychological health among school-age children. The intergroup differences remained stable with reliable effect sizes. This intervention model can be may provide a reference for future implementation as a digital public health intervention targeting school-age children’s early reading, and provides preliminary empirical evidence for the standardized application of AI-supported education for school-age children. This retrospective study only reflects the differences between groups of compound intervention programs in archived cases, and cannot establish strong causal inference.
