Wearable monitoring of pre-shot heart rate in youth golfers: a potential mental-load correlate in ecological putting practice

Jasper Gielen; Katrien Buysse; Elise Heirman; ROMAIN R. MEEUSEN; Jean‐Marie Aerts Frontiers in Psychology, 2026, Vol. 17, pp. 1939721 https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2026.1939721

Introduction Information and communication technologies, including wearable sensors, offer accessible and ecological ways to support psychological processes underpinning technical practice in sport, such as the regulation of attention, arousal and mental load. The aim of this exploratory study is to examine whether heart rate (HR) and physical activity (PA), recorded with a chest-worn wearable, can serve as a potential, indirect correlate of the mental load experienced during golf putting training. Two research questions were of interest: (i) Do pre-shot HR and PA differ between made and missed putts? (ii) Do pre-shot HR and PA differ following a made compared with a missed putt? Methods Seven youth golfing athletes (13–16 years old; handicap (hcp) index < 12) performed a putting training exercise in which the goal was to score five consecutive putts from 3-metre distance to the hole. HR and PA were recorded continuously and matched with putting performance using video footage. Pre-shot HR and PA were taken as the mean over the 5 s before ball contact. Because the putts are nested within sessions and athletes, the analyses combine within-athlete non-parametric tests, corrected for multiple comparisons and reported with effect sizes, with linear mixed-effects models treating athlete and session as random effects. Results Pre-shot HR and PA do not differ significantly between made and missed putts (mixed-model estimate for HR: +0.09 bpm, 95% CI [−0.46, 0.64]; p = 0.76). However, pre-shot HR is higher following a made putt and lower following a missed one (+5.08 bpm, 95% CI [4.54, 5.62]; p < 0.001), an association that persists after adjusting for the pre-shot HR of the preceding putt. PA shows the opposite trend. Discussion Because no subjective ratings of mental load, arousal or affect were collected, mental load remains one plausible interpretation of this pattern rather than an established one. Pending validation against such measures, the approach could offer coaches and athletes an exploratory starting point for conversations about how training situations are experienced, and illustrates how continuous monitoring of HR may provide a potential indirect correlate of mental load in youth golfers.

Elementary school is the first place where children systematically encounter questions about what it means to know, where knowledge comes from, and how a claim comes to count as true. Yet the epistemological assumptions underpinning everyday elementary teaching are seldom made explicit. This article examines the nature of children’s knowledge in elementary education practice by analysing two competing images of the child: the passive recipient (tabula rasa) and the active constructor of knowledge. Using conceptual-philosophical analysis of classical and contemporary works in epistemology, developmental psychology, and educational theory, the study finds that (a) the tabula rasa image persists in practice through initiation-response-evaluation talk, reliance on rote memorisation, and the treatment of error as failure; (b) constructivist traditions position the child as a builder of knowledge but are frequently misread as the absence of guidance; and (c) the two poles are better understood as a continuum than as a dichotomy. The article proposes an epistemological framework for simple learning built on five principles: prior knowledge as a starting point, simplicity as intellectual honesty, error as epistemic data, justification through dialogue, and graduated guidance. The framework is intended to help teachers, teacher educators, and curriculum designers examine the epistemological assumptions behind their practice.

Older adults’ beliefs about coping strategies for anxiety: A UK-based multicultural qualitative study informed by Leventhal’s Common-Sense Model of Self-Regulation

Aim Older adults experiencing anxiety disorders, particularly those from minority ethnic backgrounds, are less likely to use formal mental health services than younger adults. This UK-based multicultural qualitative study explored beliefs underpinning coping strategies for anxiety among White British, South Asian, African and Caribbean older adults who self-reported anxiety, informed by Leventhal’s Common-Sense Model. Methods Individual semi-structured interviews were conducted with 52 older adults aged ≥65 who self-reported current or past anxiety. Professional interpreters supported interviews with non-English-speaking participants (n = 10). Eight public contributors collaborated on different aspects of the study. Data were managed and analysed using the Framework Method. Findings The study drew on the perspectives of 27 participants with distressing anxiety and 25 with non-distressing anxiety. Across all cultural groups, participants adopted a range of coping strategies, with self-help strategies being the most prominent. Our findings suggest that coping strategy selection was shaped by factors extending beyond cultural background. Participants tended to adopt strategies that were congruent with their salient identities, perceived need for support, candidacy for healthcare, social relationships, and beliefs about the appropriateness and effectiveness of different responses. This complexity helps explain variation in perceptions both across and within cultural groups. Inductive analysis identified new dimensions not recognised in Leventhal’s Model: factors underlying the motivation to take action, beliefs about treatment providers and new treatment-related beliefs. Conclusions Interventions that support older adults to apply self-help strategies more effectively may represent acceptable adjuncts to formal therapy. Nevertheless, addressing barriers to formal help-seeking remains essential, particularly among those with perceived need for professional support. No one model can depict the complexity of coping behaviours. While applying Leventhal’s Model offered novel insights, it could not fully capture the motivational factors underlying engagement with specific coping behaviours. Cross-cultural research should attend to within-group heterogeneity rather than impose assumptions of cultural homogeneity.

Jack Holbrook; Cláudia Faria; Luca Szalay; Bulent Cavas; Kārlis Greitāns; Anne Mari Roost; … Science education international, 2026, Vol. 37, Issue 3, pp. 224-235 https://doi.org/10.33828/sei.v37.i3.2

The Erasmus+ acaSTEMy Teacher Academy project seeks to operationalize a future-oriented approach to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) teacher education that connects disciplinary learning with authentic societal challenges. This conceptual paper synthesizes research-informed principles underpinning the project and explains how they are translated into teacher professional learning. The framework positions integrated STEM education as problem-centered learning that combines scientific inquiry, engineering design, mathematical reasoning, digital technologies, and responsible societal decision-making. It brings together transversal and transformative competences, sustainability education, systems thinking, digital confidence, strategic thinking, and career awareness within a three-stage model that moves from socio-scientific relevance through inquiry and conceptual learning to reflection and evidence-informed action. These principles are operationalized through teacher-education modules, micro-credentials, job shadowing, mobility, and professional-learning networks. The paper argues that the main contribution of the acaSTEMy project lies not in proposing a single universal teaching model but in providing a coherent and adaptable framework for translating contemporary STEM-education priorities into teacher development and classroom practice across diverse European contexts. It also identifies implementation challenges related to disciplinary traditions, resources, institutional capacity, and the need for longer-term evaluation.

The increasing emphasis on measurable teacher competencies has intensified scholarly attention toward mathematics teaching skills (MTS). However, the indicators underpinning effective mathematics teaching remain fragmented across the literature. This study aims to map global research trends and identify key indicators of mathematics teaching skills through a systematic review and bibliometric analysis. Scopus-indexed publications published between 2015 and 2025 were searched. Studies explicitly addressing mathematics teaching skills were considered eligible for inclusion. A total of 212 records were identified and screened following the PRISMA 2020 framework through identification, screening, eligibility, and inclusion stages. After applying the selection criteria, 18 studies were included in the final review. To provide a broader overview of the field, bibliometric analysis was conducted on 59 records that passed title and abstract screening. VOSviewer was used to analyze publication trends, co-authorship networks, keyword co-occurrence, and citation patterns, while the included studies were synthesized thematically to identify mathematics teaching skill indicators. The findings reveal a steady increase in research output over the past decade, reflecting growing international attention to the professionalization of mathematics teachers. The most dominant dimension identified across the literature was the integration of Content Knowledge (CK) and Pedagogical Knowledge (PK), accounting for 53.7% of the studies. This was followed by Content Knowledge (CK) as a standalone dimension (20.9%). The third most prominent dimensions were the integration of Content Knowledge and Technological Knowledge (CK–TK), Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPCK), and Continuous Professional Development (CPD), each representing 7.5% of the studies.
