Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCD) serve as a foundational framework for the holistic growth and lifelong learning of young children. In the Philippines, its implementation is mandated by Republic Act No. 10410 and strengthened by Republic Act No. 12199, which emphasize quality early childhood education delivered by competent Child Development Workers (CDWs) and supported by strong institutional systems; however, implementation continues to face challenges related to limited resources, professional development gaps, administrative constraints, and varying levels of community and parental involvement. This study examined the level of readiness and the challenges encountered by CDWs in implementing the ECCD Curriculum in Barangay Child Development Centers in the Municipality of Mabinay, Negros Oriental. A quantitative descriptive-correlational design was employed, using a validated researcher-made Likert-scale questionnaire administered to ten (10) purposively selected CDWs during School Year 2025–2026. Data were analyzed using frequency, percentage, weighted mean, and Pearson product-moment correlation at the 0.05 level of significance. Findings revealed that the respondents were highly ready in their understanding of the ECCD curriculum (WM = 4.28) and in pedagogical skills and instructional practices (WM = 4.28), but only moderately ready in terms of resources and materials (WM = 3.80) and support, supervision, and professional development (WM = 3.84). Challenges were generally moderate, with insufficient toys and learning materials, varied learning needs of children, and heavy workload and administrative tasks emerging as the most notable concerns. ECCD-related training showed a strong, significant positive relationship with readiness (r = 0.795, p = 0.006), whereas age, educational attainment, and years of experience were not significantly related to readiness, no profile variable was significantly related to the challenges encountered, and readiness was not significantly related to challenges (r = 0.081, p = 0.824). The study concludes that while CDWs are generally prepared to implement the ECCD Curriculum, their effectiveness is constrained by largely systemic and environmental challenges. These findings imply the need for continuous professional development combined with improved resource allocation, reduced administrative workload, strengthened institutional support, and stronger collaboration among local government units, parents, and community stakeholders.
Sports betting has expanded across sub-Saharan Africa, increasingly intersecting with young people’s aspirations, technological accessibility, and economic insecurity. Although awareness of gambling-related risks may influence young people’s decisions, recognising such risks does not necessarily lead to cessation of betting. This study explored how young bettors understood betting risks in Shibai Street, Buhongwa Ward, Mwanza, Tanzania. A qualitative cross-sectional study employing ethnographic methods was conducted between July and August 2025. Data were collected from 18 purposively selected active bettors aged 18-29 years through in-depth semi-structured interviews, non-participant observation, and informal conversations. Interviews were conducted in Kiswahili, audio-recorded, transcribed into English, and analysed thematically following Braun and Clarke’s approach. The findings were interpreted using Verstehen, strain, and rational choice perspectives. Participants identified financial loss, difficulty stopping, stress and mental distress, relationship conflict, theft, reduced attention to work or learning, reduced work-seeking, dishonesty, deepening poverty, and loss of personal possessions as important betting-related risks. However, awareness of these risks did not consistently result in withdrawal from betting. Some participants continued because betting provided hope, expectations of quick financial gains, peer influence, and a perceived opportunity to escape poverty. The study concludes that understanding betting risks among youth requires attention to the meanings attached to betting and the economic and social circumstances within which participation occurs. Risk education should therefore be complemented by livelihood opportunities, community support, counselling, and appropriate harm-prevention measures.
Shared Reading (SR) is a communal well-being intervention in which a literary text is read aloud and discussed in a group. A form of emotion-centred close reading, SR emerged as a reaction against elitist academic norms and was developed in an attempt to emotionalise and democratise literary study by moving it outside of the confines of the university. This theoretical essay argues that humanities and social science lecturers might benefit from introducing SR praxis into their classes. Each section analyses an aspect of SR through emotionally engaged (hooks, Palmer), relational (Hickey, Riddle, Gravett), and critical (Freire) pedagogical and theoretical lenses, arguing that SR serves many of the aspirations of these pedagogies. I then consider how SR might be implemented in an academic setting and the kind of adaptations that might be necessary. This essay is a thought experiment which I hope will lay the groundwork for a more sustained and applied experiment in SR. Throughout, I argue that infusing SR into university settings has the potential to positively benefit student well-being and academic performance.
Background Stroke is a leading cause of disability worldwide and is frequently accompanied by psychological and functional impairments. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), a third-wave behavioral intervention focusing on psychological flexibility, has been increasingly applied in stroke rehabilitation. Although previous reviews have suggested beneficial effects of ACT in stroke patients, whether these benefits persist in the short term after the intervention ends, and the certainty of the evidence, remain unclear. Methods A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted according to PRISMA guidelines and registered in PROSPERO (CRD420261325108). Randomized controlled trials evaluating ACT in stroke patients were included. Pooled effects were calculated using random-effects models, with separate analyses for post-intervention and follow-up outcomes. Sources of heterogeneity were explored using subgroup analyses and meta-regression. Risk of bias was assessed using the Cochrane Risk of Bias 2 tool, and certainty of evidence was evaluated using the GRADE framework. Results Twenty-two RCTs involving 1,975 participants were included. ACT may be associated with reductions in depressive symptoms (post-intervention: SMD = −1.32, 95% CI: −1.80 to −0.84; follow-up: SMD = −0.76, 95% CI: −1.07 to −0.45) and anxiety symptoms (post-intervention: SMD = −1.36, 95% CI: −1.90 to −0.82; follow-up: SMD = −0.51, 95% CI: −1.42 to 0.40, not significant); depressive symptoms remained statistically significant at follow-up. Heterogeneity was considerable for both outcomes at post-intervention ( I 2 = 93.68% for depression and 93.60% for anxiety), so the pooled estimates represent average effects across studies. ACT may also be associated with improvements in psychological flexibility, quality of life, and sleep quality; however, these outcomes were based on a limited number of studies and showed considerable heterogeneity ( I 2 = 74.68 to 92.26%), so they should be interpreted cautiously. However, no statistically significant effects were observed for activities of daily living, neurological function, or hope. ACT did not appear to increase dropout rates in the available studies ( K = 16; RR = 0.99, 95% CI: 0.58–1.69). Meta-regression analyses indicated that intervention duration may not be a significant moderator of treatment effects. The certainty of evidence ranged from very low to moderate, mainly due to risk of bias and inconsistency. Conclusion Acceptance and Commitment Therapy may be a useful adjunctive intervention for improving psychological outcomes in people with stroke. However, evidence for functional recovery remains insufficient. Future high-quality RCTs with standardized protocols, larger samples, and longer follow-up are needed to confirm the long-term effectiveness of ACT. Objective This cross-sectional study (1) compared social support, psychological-capital dimensions, and both C-MLQ dimensions between students with and without visual impairments; and (2) among students with visual impairments, examined the association between social support and presence of meaning (C-MLQ-P) and tested the a priori hypothesized cross-sectional indirect association through hope. Self-efficacy, resilience, and optimism were examined exploratorily in descriptive/correlational and hierarchical-regression analyses. Methods Participants were 170 students with visual impairments and 294 students without visual impairments from a vocational college in China. They completed measures of social support, psychological capital, and meaning in life. Group differences were examined using MANCOVA with follow-up ANCOVAs. Among students with visual impairments, Pearson correlations and an exploratory hierarchical regression were conducted, and H3 was tested using a single cross-sectional indirect-effect model with social support (ASSS-Total) as the predictor, hope (PPQ-Hop) as the indirect variable, presence of meaning (C-MLQ-P) as the outcome, and age and sex as covariates. Results After adjustment for age and sex, students with visual impairments scored significantly lower on objective support, support utilization, self-efficacy, optimism, presence of meaning, and search for meaning than students without visual impairments, whereas no significant group differences were observed for subjective support, resilience, or hope. Among students with visual impairments, social support was positively associated with the presence of meaning (r = 0.56, p < 0.01). In the H3 model, the total association between social support and presence of meaning was 0.8912 (95% CI [0.6988, 1.0835]), the direct association was 0.3560 (95% CI [0.1655, 0.5465]), and the indirect association through hope was 0.5352 (BootSE = 0.0923, 95% bootstrap CI [0.3680, 0.7239]). Conclusions In this sample from a single Chinese vocational college, social support was positively associated with the presence of meaning, and a significant cross-sectional statistical indirect association was observed through hope. Because the data were cross-sectional, the observed indirect association does not establish temporal ordering or a causal mechanism. Longitudinal and experimental studies are needed to determine whether changes in social support precede changes in hope and presence of meaning.
Our study examines the mechanisms of retention for non-mechanized and unpaid teachers (NU/NP) in public schools or institutions under the Protestant conventionized system, not as an act of volunteerism, but as a dialectical phenomenon shaped by the tension between commitment and constraint. Based on a mixed survey conducted with NU/NP teachers, school principals, and Protestant coordinators, we showed that the permanence of these teachers cannot be explained solely by vocation, nor by the painful coexistence of these two logics. The dialectical thematic analysis of the respondents’ statements reveals pairs of opposing forces: vocation/exploitation, hope/slowness, divine service/survival. Thus, 74.8% of respondents simultaneously express a missionary attachment to the school and a feeling of experienced distributive injustice. This contradiction, far from causing a break, actually drives retention itself: the expectation, Legitimate faith, fear of losing accumulated seniority, but also the lack of job opportunities elsewhere; all prevent people from leaving. On the institutional side, managers maintain this paradox through a multi-valued discourse, mixing structural helplessness with the instrumentalization of faith. The study concludes that keeping NU/NP loyal is dialectical because it doesn’t rely on satisfaction, but on the impossibility of choosing between staying out of conviction and leaving out of dignity. It makes recommendations to the State: increase the number of schools, ensure retirement and mechanization for NU and NP; to the Church, to avoid reassuring NU and NP that their future mechanization is the State’s responsibility through religious discourse and unkept promises.
OBJECTIVES: This study examined whether the components of hope (agency and pathways) and self-compassion (self-warmth and self-coldness) moderate the relationship between poorer perceived physical health and depressive symptoms, and whether these moderating effects are conditional on place of residence. METHODS: = 8.16) completed the Adult Hope Scale, Self-Compassion Scale, physical health items of the Duke Health Profile, and short form of the Geriatric Depression Scale. RESULTS: Almost half (46.3%) of the sample had sub-threshold depressive symptoms. Pathways weakened the association between poorer perceived physical health and depressive symptoms for urban older adults. Self-coldness strengthened the association between poorer perceived physical health and depressive symptoms for rural older adults. CONCLUSIONS: Pathways are a protective factor for Nepali older adults experiencing poorer perceived physical health from urban areas, whereas self-coldness is an additional risk factor for those living in rural areas. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: Interventions aimed at reducing depressive symptoms among Nepali older adults with poorer perceived physical health should focus on increasing pathways in urban areas and reducing self-coldness in rural areas.
People with longstanding eating disorders (EDs) are often conceptualised as 'treatment-resistant' when they are not currently benefitting from established recovery-focused treatments. This may encourage a shift from recovery-focused treatments to care approaches that for many individuals do not foster recovery. As a result, the present article offers an explicitly hope-holding and recovery-fostering care (RFC) approach that neither demands recovery nor abandons the possibility of recovery, whatever recovery may mean to the individual being cared for. RFC is guided by the following principles, which were developed in response to limitations identified in current care approaches for people with longstanding EDs: [1] Holding hope for meaningful recovery and enabling opportunities for it; [2] Building therapeutic alliances; [3] Formulation-based and epistemically just care; [4] Unconditional safeguarding; and [5] Supporting caregivers. RFC is not a scientific model with the level of specification often demanded by academic frameworks. Rather, it is a creative, flexible, and person-led approach to care that prioritises people with lived experience over strict adherence to manuals, and values humanity-based care alongside evidence-based care.
Refugee communities across the world have long gathered to connect and support one another during times of crisis, and this has been well-documented. Despite the vast amount of literature pertaining to coping and resiliency among refugee communities, there is limited knowledge about refugee community healing. Approximately one in three refugees experiences depression, anxiety, or post-traumatic stress that can persist long after displacement. Dominant approaches within Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, Democratic (WEIRD) psychologies tend to conceptualize trauma through an individualistic lens, often overlooking social, historical, and collective dimensions of suffering. This can result in siloed findings with limited relevance to refugee communities. Addressing this gap, this paper reports on the third phase of a Decolonizing Participatory Action Research (PAR) study examining historical trauma and intergenerational healing among second-generation Tamil refugee young adults in Toronto. This community-driven study foregrounds a praxis of healing envisioned with, by, and for refugee communities. Two research questions guided the inquiry: (1) What elements are important for community healing among Tamil young adults? and (2) What do community healing practices and therapeutic interventions look like in this context? Using storytelling and participatory avatar-based community circles, alongside reflexive thematic analysis, seven key elements of community healing were identified: (1) agency and self-determination; (2) historical trauma-informed approaches; (3) cultural safety; (4) intergenerational connectedness and belonging; (5) destigmatized access and delivery; (6) holistic and authentic healing practices; and (7) truth-telling as justice. Findings highlight community healing as a dynamic, dialectical process, requiring both resistance to intersecting systems of oppression and the cultivation of radical hope for justice and liberation. Findings also emphasize the importance of culturally grounded, community-led interventions in promoting mental well-being. This study contributes innovative, participatory methodology and actionable insights for practitioners and policymakers, advancing a shift toward liberatory approaches to refugee health.
Public speaking is a skill that develops individuals, impacts the surrounding world, and promotes one's career. Now, public speaking is practiced in various societies, regardless of the individual's position. For the millennial generation, whose lives are highly intertwined with technology in every aspect, such as learning, shopping, communication, and booking transportation, face-to-face interaction with the general public is limited. However, through mastering public speaking skills, millennials can enhance their social communication and boost their self-confidence. This training activity was conducted for millennials using the lecture, discussion, practical (role-playing), and mentoring methods. Lectures and discussions helped expand knowledge, while practical exercises (role-playing) trained and motivated the participants, enabling them to gain the courage and familiarity to address an audience. The training results showed that most of the presented material was understood by the participants. Most of the participants' questions served to reinforce or clarify the concepts discussed. Practical sessions ran smoothly; although the participants initially felt fearful or lacked confidence to stand before the group, this nervousness dissipated after subsequent opportunities to practice. Moreover, participants successfully explored their own potential, demonstrating organized and focused speech, clearer vocal delivery, and even the use of humor and engaging body language. All participants appeared more at ease but serious in demeanor. They expressed a hope for continued public speaking training, realizing that it was significantly beneficial for millennials, especially the university students, who are expected not only to excel in academics but also to possess excellent public speaking skills.

This article examines the narrative of Adam and Eve from the perspectives of psychology of religion and spiritual counseling and care, drawing on the therapeutic functions of sacred texts. Grounded in the long-standing healing power of narratives, bibliotherapy is discussed within the context of sacred texts, with particular attention to spiritual bibliotherapy’s capacity to access individuals’ moral, emotional, and existential processes. Within this framework, the study relates the Adam and Eve narrative to the concept of moral injury, which has gained increasing prominence in contemporary psychological literature, and explores the potential of sacred narratives in processes of spiritual repair. The research adopts a qualitative approach, employing purposive literature review and conceptual analysis. Classical and modern interpretations of the Adam and Eve narrative in the Torah and the Qur’an, together with literature on psychology of religion and moral injury, were analyzed using Braun and Clarke’s thematic analysis framework. Four core themes were identified: will and responsibility; transgression and rebellion; shame and alienation; and hope and redemption. The findings demonstrate that the narrative makes visible the moral and spiritual ruptures following value violations and offers a meaningful foundation of hope for spiritual healing through confrontation and repentance. The study concludes that the Adam and Eve narrative can serve as a bibliotherapeutic resource in spiritual care.
To synthesise the efficacy of digital third-wave process-based interventions (e.g., ACT, Mindfulness, Compassion) for improving wellbeing and ameliorating mental health symptoms in adults. A prospectively registered systematic review (OSF: 10.17605/OSF.IO/5RMU2 ) and random-effects meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials (RCTs) was conducted across six databases through January 2026. Certainty of evidence was assessed using the GRADE framework. Interventions ( k = 147; N = 26,391) yielded small-to-moderate immediate post-intervention improvements in wellbeing ( k = 46, g = 0.36), depression ( k = 110, g = 0.44), anxiety ( k = 93, g = 0.40), stress ( k = 66, g = 0.46), quality of life ( k = 32, g = 0.30), and psychological flexibility ( k = 51, g = 0.41). Heterogeneity was substantial across most outcomes ( I2 > 75%). Benefits were observed across healthy (61 trials; n = 15,770), mental health (41 trials; n = 6,130), and medical samples (46 trials; n = 4,491), with population type not significantly moderating immediate post-intervention effects. Comparator type significantly moderated several analyses, with smaller effects against active than inactive controls. Guidance did not significantly moderate immediate post-intervention effects, although it predicted larger short-term depression effects ( QM = 4.17, p = .048). At short-term follow-up, effects remained statistically supported across all outcomes, while only depression, anxiety, and stress remained statistically supported at medium-term follow-up. GRADE certainty was moderate for most immediate post-intervention outcomes and low for quality of life. Digital third-wave interventions produced small-to-moderate average benefits across symptom-focused, wellbeing-focused, and process outcomes. Effects were smaller against active comparators, indicating that pooled benefits should be interpreted in relation to comparator intensity. Future research should prioritise rigorous active controls, longer follow-up, and direct tests of whether changes in psychological flexibility mediate improvements in symptoms and wellbeing.
Adolescents living with HIV (ALHIV) in Eastern and Southern Africa experience challenges around medication adherence, mental health and wellbeing. Although interventions such as Zvandiri aim to strengthen mental health and wellbeing to impact HIV treatment outcomes, available measures often focus on negative outcomes or rely on positive psychology instruments developed in high-income settings. These tools may not adequately capture culturally embedded and relational dimensions of wellbeing. We describe the development of the Zvandiri Character Strength (ZCS) scale and draw methodological lessons for culturally grounded wellbeing measurement. The multi-stage scale-development process (2022–2025) comprised a scoping and systematic review, qualitative discussions, expert panel input, construct and item prioritisation, cognitive interviews, iterative item reduction, and exploratory factor and Rasch analyses. We reduced an initial item bank to a 53-item candidate scale, then to the ZCS 38 (38 items) and finally, the ZCS 25 (25 items), based on quantitative analyses and participant feedback. We subsequently assessed the ZCS 25 using retrospective pretest, post-test and follow-up administration. The review identified conceptually overlapping positive psychological constructs, many of which are measured using instruments developed in high-income settings and not adequately validated for ALHIV in Africa. Qualitative work highlighted connectedness, hope, self-acceptance, self-efficacy, purpose, and flourishing as key. Discussions also highlighted that wellbeing was relational, contextually situated, and often co-occurring with distress. Quantitative testing showed highly positive responses, disordered thresholds, ceiling effects, weak internal structure, and fluctuating retrospective ratings. Participant feedback suggested that positive responses likely reflected affirmations, and were partly linked to social desirability. In conclusion, the ZCS scale did not support a single interpretable total score, but its development offers important methodological lessons. Future measurement should begin with clearer construct definition, response-process validation, domain-level testing and explicit decisions about whether the measure aims to capture lived wellbeing, domain-specific positive outcomes or intervention-relevant change.
