Understanding Undergraduate Students’ Willingness to Engage in Conventional and High-Risk Activism

Taylor Payne; Lillian Nguyen; Allison Zengilowski; Flor Castellanos Sanchez; Jendayi Dillard; Ashley M. Bennett; … Innovative Higher Education, 2026 https://doi.org/10.1007/s10755-026-09970-w

Over the last decade, there has been a visible surge of students participating in and leading different forms of activism. Following the cultural reckoning of 2020, the United States saw a rise in awareness and engagement in activism among young individuals. Continuing this trend, higher education institutions have seen an increase in on-campus demonstrations in recent years. Given the recent increase in activism, political engagement, and the globalization of social issues, this study examined how attitudes, beliefs, individual factors, and prior behaviors relate to undergraduate students’ willingness to engage in different forms of activism (i.e., conventional and high-risk). Across both forms of activism, institutional advocacy (i.e., the behavioral targeting of institutional racism) was the most consistent unique predictor of a student's willingness to engage in activism. Need for cognition and individual advocacy were significantly and positively related to conventional activism, whereas political orientation was negatively related to it. Social justice orientation was significantly and negatively related to high-risk activism.

Intersectional Barriers to Academic Access and Success for Rural Students in South African Higher Education: A Systematic Review and Social Justice Perspective

Cele Siyanda Mluleki Kenneth International Journal of Learning Teaching and Educational Research, 2026, pp. 626 https://doi.org/10.26803/ijlter.25.10.26

Rural-origin students in South African higher education face multiple, overlapping forms of marginalisation that collectively hinder their academic access and success. Despite significant policy reforms aimed at expanding access and addressing historical injustices, the educational paths of these learners are still disproportionately affected by a combination of socio-economic deprivation, linguistic exclusion, gendered vulnerabilities, and technological marginalisation. This systematic review synthesises current empirical evidence to clarify how these intersectional barriers merge to obstruct the educational journeys of rural-origin students in South African higher education. It also critically examines how institutional policies and technological interventions may unintentionally reinforce or potentially alleviate these inequities. The study followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, conducting a comprehensive search across multiple academic databases for studies published between 2018 and 2026. After a rigorous screening and eligibility process, 52 studies met the inclusion criteria and underwent thematic analysis guided by Nancy Fraser's trivalent social justice framework. Five overarching themes emerged: The multidimensional digital divide; linguistic exclusion and the devaluation of vernacular knowledge; gendered vulnerabilities and the burden of social reproduction; algorithmic bias and the risks associated with technological solutionism; and governance gaps alongside the failure of participatory parity. The findings revealed that existing equity frameworks inadequately address the structural dimensions of rural marginalisation. Achieving educational equity necessitates a fundamental shift towards intersectionality-aware, context-sensitive institutional policies that prioritise resource redistribution, cultural recognition, and the meaningful representation of students from rural backgrounds in decision-making processes.

RECONSTRUCTING SUFI BASED ISLAMIC EDUCATIONAL MANAGEMENT: A SCHOOL GOVERNANCE MODEL INTEGRATING PERFORMANCE, VALUES, WELL BEING, AND SOCIAL IMPACT

Ahmad Halid; Yunus Hamdani; Siti Aisah; Muhammad Indarto FAJAR Jurnal Pendidikan Islam, 2026, Vol. 6, Issue 2, pp. 306-322 https://doi.org/10.56013/fj.v6i2.6519

School management in an era of rapid change faces increasingly complex challenges. Schools are required to deliver measurable academic performance, meet quality standards, develop teacher competencies, adaptively utilize technology, and produce graduates capable of contributing to society. However, management orientations that rely too heavily on performance indicators, administrative efficiency, accreditation, and academic achievements risk overlooking the inner human dimension, the quality of relationships, moral values, the well-being of the school community, and the social impact of education. This article aims to reconstruct value-based education management through a Sufi perspective by developing a school governance model that integrates four key dimensions: performance, values, well-being, and social impact. The study employs a qualitative-conceptual approach, drawing on a literature review of Sufi thought, spiritual leadership, education management, learning organizations, distributed leadership, educator well-being, and leadership for social justice. The study yields the "Sufi School Governance Model," a framework that establishes tazkiyat al-nafs (purification of the soul), muraqabah (spiritual vigilance), amanah (trustworthiness), ihsan (excellence/spiritual sincerity), shūrā (consultation), ‘adl (justice), tawāḍu‘ (humility), mahabbah (love/compassion), and khidmah (service) as its foundational values; performance as the professional dimension; well-being as the human dimension; and social impact as the orientation toward the common good. This model operates through a cycle of niyyah (intention) tazkiyah (purification) amanah (trust) shūrā (consultation) ihsan (excellence) khidmah (service) muḥāsabah (self-reflection) iṣlāḥ (reform), which translates into planning, organizing, leadership, human resource development, supervision, evaluation, and continuous improvement. This reconstruction positions the school principal not merely as an administrator, but as a murabbī (spiritual educator/mentor), khādim (servant-leader), and uswah (role model), while the school itself is positioned as a community for learning, character building, well-being, and social transformation. This model offers an expanded definition of school success, moving beyond mere "school performance" toward performance that is meaningful, ethical, human-centered, and socially impactful

Inclusive of whom? Access, equity and instrumental music education for those with disability

Leon Rene de Bruin; Anthea Skinner International Journal of Inclusive Education, 2026, pp. 1-16 https://doi.org/10.1080/13603116.2026.2748494

Achieving equality in music education for people with disability calls for transformative changes to attitudes, structures and norms. Segregation and streaming remains prevalent in instrumental music education, gatekeeping access and opportunity to mainstream education opportunities. The United Nations’ Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD, Article 24) ascribes access to inclusive education for people with disability on an equal basis, with the aim of fully developing human potential. Despite this, academic theorising about inclusive education still limits how this may be practically and philosophically applied in music education. Inclusion in instrumental music education is further limited by a culture of performance excellence rather than equity and enrichment of all, and a focus on music performance outcomes rather than a deep and holistic education experience gleaned from music making and participation. Significant EDI initiatives that aim to foster inclusive environments and practices are considered and drawn to music education contexts, in particular instrumental music education in Australia, where access for students with disability at the secondary level is severely limited. Our critique extends to praxial and philosophical considerations concerning the role of education in instrumental music in schools, accessibility, and social justice considerations educators should consider in devising of inclusive curricula, pedagogies and engagement.

From transaction to dialogue: engaging with student voice to co-produce inclusive policies and practices in higher education

Holly White; Ruth L. Healey; Kim Ross; Chantal Worsdell; Melanie Crofts; Chantal Davies International Journal of Inclusive Education, 2026, pp. 1-19 https://doi.org/10.1080/13603116.2026.2734939

As universities, within the UK and internationally, strive to promote equality, diversity and inclusion in their practices, policies and, ultimately, cultures, it is imperative to prioritise student voice and co-production with equity-denied groups. This study examines students’ views, particularly those of equity-denied groups, on student voice mechanisms and explores opportunities to develop more inclusive approaches to policy and practice design in higher education. This article draws on the literature on co-production and student-staff partnerships to critically explore the process of moving from transactional to dialogical approaches to eliciting and responding to the ‘student voice’, emphasising how relationship builiding in policy design can facilitate a more inclusive environment. The article is underpinned by student-led focus groups with students, a survey and roundtable discussions with Equality, Diversity and Inclusion leads nationally. The findings emphasise the importance of moving from transactional feedback methods towards adopting a dialogical, partnership-based approach to policy and practice design and evaluation. The article contributes a framework for when and how to co-produce with students in higher education, particularly those from equity denied groups. We contend that when conducted meaningfully, promoting dialogical student voice mechanisms and co-producing change with students can enhance student experience and ultimately inclusion, while promoting social justice in higher education.

“Figure out who I am as a person and then go from there”: youth insights on humanizing education

Dena N. Simmons; Shauna L. Tominey; Miriam Miller; Meiko Lin Frontiers in Education, 2026, Vol. 11 https://doi.org/10.3389/feduc.2026.1951520

Over the past decade, there has been a surge in mental health challenges among adolescents. While social and emotional learning (SEL) programs are positioned to bolster young people's social, emotional, and academic success and mental health, too few SEL programs center adolescent development in the present context, largely ignoring the realities and needs of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC), LGBTQ2SIA+, and students with disabilities. To fill this gap and need for transformative SEL, we hosted a series of focus groups with fifteen BIPOC middle schoolers to ask what they need to belong and thrive at school, given our belief that the youth most marginalized carry the genius to transform schools for every student. In this paper, we share their insights on how educators can create learning environments that ensure their safety, honor their humanity, cultivate joy, and foster their social, emotional, and academic well-being through transformative SEL and liberatory teaching practices. Youth shared easy-to-implement examples of how educators can nurture relationships with students, create safe and caring classroom environments, humanize education, and advance social justice and civic engagement. Based on what we learned from youth, we urge SEL program developers and educators to start by discovering who young people are and what they need to flourish socially, emotionally, and academically, then to use what students share to inform instructional practice, create and select academic content, guide interactions, and build communities where students feel a sense of trust, belonging, and care.

A debate for inclusive community development: Uncovering marginalized perspectives

Lindani Sthembele Maphumulo Community Development, 2026, pp. 1-19 https://doi.org/10.1080/15575330.2026.2746105

The paper draws on participatory development, social justice, and decolonization frameworks, emphasizing inclusive development as a tool to address historical and ongoing exclusions. Using a desktop qualitative literature review, the paper collected secondary data from publicly available sources. The paper uses case studies from South Africa and other African nations to illustrate the successful implementation of the identified guides, demonstrating how they align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 2023 (SDGs), the African Union Agenda 2063, and the South African National Development Plan 2030 (NDP). Thematic content analysis is employed; the paper identifies five key themes and proposes five key guides for advancing inclusive community development in Africa. The main argument the paper maintains is that Participatory Action Research (PAR) empowers marginalized communities to identify issues and co-create solutions. The paper concludes by proposing a shift in Integrated Development Plans (IDPs) to prioritize inclusivity and equitable participation.

Envisioning Norwegian teacher education for public good professionalism: a curriculum policy analysis

Ciara Solheim; Tobias Christoph Werler Nordic Journal of Studies in Educational Policy, 2026, pp. 1-17 https://doi.org/10.1080/20020317.2026.2742560

Teacher education (TE) policy is often caught between preparing teachers as agents of social change and a narrow ‘teacher effectiveness’ paradigm. This article examines this tension in Norway, where egalitarian traditions meet global neoliberal accountability discourses. Analysing the pivotal Norwegian TE curriculum policy document, Stortingsmelding nr. 11 (Minstry of Education and Research, 2008–2009), the study uses the Public Good Professionalism (PGP) framework as an analytical lens to assess the extent to which the policy enables the development of teachers as transformative public good professionals. We employ an AI-assisted deductive content analysis using a multi-coder ensemble of nine GPT-4 assistants configured with diverse parameters (temperature and top_p) to provide a parametric stress-test of the coding scheme. Findings reveal a significant discrepancy between stated social equality goals and substantive content. Capabilities explicitly addressed in policy (e.g. Informed Vision) show high ensemble convergence but are instrumentally reframed, stripped of their transformative potential. Conversely, capabilities essential for social justice (e.g. Social and Collective Struggle) show the lowest convergence, reflecting their marginalization. The study concludes that the policy prioritizes a ‘proficient technician’ over a ‘public good professional’, revealing a fundamental structural barrier to socially just teacher education in Norway.
