While existing literature recognises mentorship as an important strategy for leadership development, there is limited empirical understanding of how women experience and negotiate mentorship as they advance into school leadership in the South African context. Despite policy efforts to promote gender equity, women remain underrepresented in school leadership, and the role of mentorship in addressing this disparity remains insufficiently understood. This study explores mentorship as a relational mechanism through which women negotiate access, leadership identity, and social capital in their advancement into school leadership. An interpretive qualitative design, underpinned by a narrative phenomenological approach and informed by Social Capital Theory, was used to explore the experiences of six purposively selected women leaders from township schools in a single district in KwaZulu-Natal. Data were generated through semi-structured interviews and were analysed thematically. Participants reported that supportive mentoring relationships provided them with confidence, professional visibility, networking opportunities, leadership guidance, and encouragement to pursue leadership positions. Participants with limited access to mentorship described feelings of isolation, reduced access to leadership guidance, and fewer opportunities for professional development. They also reported seeking mentorship through external professional networks and women-centered spaces when support within their immediate school environments was limited. Some participants described mentoring relationships characterised by unequal power dynamics, limited trust, or inappropriate behaviour. Based on these accounts, the researchers interpret mentorship as an uneven, relational, and context-dependent mechanism through which women negotiate access to professional resources, leadership identity, and social capital. The findings suggest that mentorship can facilitate women's leadership development when relationships are supportive and trusting, but may also constrain agency when mentoring relationships reproduce hierarchical and gendered power relations. The study, therefore, extends understanding of mentorship by shifting attention from the mere availability of mentors to the relational, institutional, and power conditions that shape how mentorship is experienced and mobilised. Although limited by its small, context-specific sample, the study provides contextually grounded insights into mentorship and women's advancement into school leadership. It highlights the need for structured, responsive, and gender-sensitive mentoring opportunities.
This study explores examines the role of expert educators in leading cross-school professional learning networks (PLNs) that are intentionally embedded within a professional development program designed to which cultivate future-ready and inclusive school leaders in Hong Kong. Drawing on a qualitative, open-ended questionnaire-based report from 26 expert educators, including 21 expert principals (EP) and 5 senior expert principals (SEP), the research examines their roles and the challenges they face in fostering cross-school collaboration. The study identified five interrelated leadership practices employed by the EPs and SEPs, including (1) fostering intense collaboration; (2) facilitating reflection; (3) developing a shared sense of purpose; (4) supporting cross-boundary learning; and (5) embodying reciprocal learning. The study contributes to the growing literature on leadership development grounded in PLNs. The findings argue the significance of experts and their independent leadership strategies to establish cross-school PLNs, pointing out that trust and embodying reciprocal learning reinforce their sustained engagement in cross-school PLNs. This study prompts further exploration of how leadership can establish and sustain cross-school PLNs for leadership development. The findings inform policymakers and educational leaders about how to develop meaningful learning across schools. Recommendations are offered to educational policymakers and school management bodies to prioritize the strengthening of professional networks for leadership development through active participation and expert guidance in the field.
Effective school leadership is vital to school management, teacher performance, and quality education. This study examined the leadership skills, core behavioral skills, and administrative practices of public secondary school heads in the Schools Division of Cagayan de Oro City during the school year 2025–2026. It assessed key leadership and behavioral competencies and determined their relationships with administrative practices. A descriptive-correlational design was used, with universal sampling of 105 school heads. Data were gathered through a standardized questionnaire anchored on the Results-Based Performance Management System and the Philippine Professional Standards for School Heads. Frequency, percentage, weighted mean, standard deviation, and Pearson correlation were used. Findings showed high levels of leadership skills, core behavioral skills, and administrative practices. People development was the strongest leadership dimension, while teamwork and innovation were the most evident core behavioral competencies. Managing school operations and resources, and focusing on teaching and learning, were among the strongest administrative practices. The study found significant positive relationships between leadership skills and administrative practices, and between core behavioral skills and administrative practices. The study concludes that effective school leadership requires a combination of people leadership, professional behavior, instructional leadership, strategic management, and administrative competence. It recommends needs-based leadership development, mentoring and coaching, stronger results-focused practices, ongoing instructional leadership training, stakeholder engagement, reflective practice, and individualized professional development plans to support the continued growth of school heads.
Self-leadership and self-efficacy are theoretically and empirically linked, yet limited research explains how individuals interpret self-leadership experiences as evidence of personal capability. Although self-leadership practices and mastery experiences contribute to self-efficacy, the cognitive process through which performance experiences become evidence of competence remains insufficiently understood. Attribution theory explains how individuals infer the causes of performance outcomes but offers limited insight into how these interpretations inform subsequent judgements of personal capability. This paper proposes responsibility attribution as a cognitive mechanism that may explain how performance experiences are incorporated into self-efficacy beliefs. Responsibility attribution is conceptualised as an evaluative appraisal through which individuals determine whether a performance outcome should be interpreted as evidence of their own capability. Outcomes perceived as personally attributable may therefore acquire psychological significance for subsequent self-efficacy judgements. Integrating self-leadership theory, social cognitive theory, and attribution theory, the proposed framework explains how individuals may transform performance experiences into capability judgements that support self-directed behaviour. The paper contributes to attribution theory by specifying a potentially under-theorised function of attributional processing: evaluating whether interpreted outcomes constitute evidence of personal capability. The framework also offers a theoretical basis for future research into self-leadership development and interventions that strengthen learning from experience.
Leadership development is essential for Islamic educational institutions seeking to improve educational quality while preserving their religious and ethical foundations. This study aims to examine leadership development strategies, identify factors influencing their implementation, and explore the integration of Islamic ethical principles into leadership development. A systematic literature review (SLR) is designed using the PRISMA 2020 reporting framework and thematic synthesis. The review focuses on individual leadership competencies, organizational practices, and Islamic ethical orientation. The proposed analytical framework encompasses professional development, mentoring, succession planning, and distributed leadership, alongside organizational support, institutional culture, and opportunities to apply professional learning. It also examines how amanah (trustworthiness), ‘adl (justice), and syura (consultation) can connect leadership competence with ethical responsibility. The study’s intended contribution is an integrated conceptual framework for understanding leadership development in Islamic educational institutions and informing context-sensitive leadership programmes. Its practical implications concern leadership preparation, institutional policy, and professional learning. However, the strength of these conclusions will depend on the completeness and quality of the studies identified and included in the review. The study’s originality lies in bringing professional competencies, organizational conditions, and Islamic ethical principles into a common analytical framework.

This study aims to determine the formation of student leadership at Junior High School of 2 Sorong Regency, teacher strategies in improving leadership through OSIS, and supporting and inhibiting factors in the process. The method used is a descriptive qualitative approach with Miles and Huberman model data analysis techniques. The results of the study indicate that the formation of leadership is carried out through real practices in the OSIS organization, such as the selection of administrators through internal elections, the provision of operational responsibilities, and character building through social activities. Supporting factors for the success of this program include participatory principal leadership, progressive OSIS mentors, a functional organizational structure, parental involvement, and the diversity of OSIS activities. The inhibiting factors are the absence of structural training such as LDKS, the high workload of mentoring teachers, and the lack of student understanding of the concept of leadership. Therefore, the development of student leadership requires a structured, consistent strategy and support from various parties.
Introduction Socially responsible leadership (SRL) encompasses individual, group, and societal values relevant to college student development. This study identified SRL profiles among Chinese undergraduates, examined profile similarity across gender, and investigated factors associated with profile membership. Methods A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 1,248 students from eight higher education institutions. Latent profile analysis was performed using seven SRL dimensions, followed by multigroup comparisons and three-step analyses of profile membership. Results Three SRL profiles were identified: low SRL (18.67%), average SRL (57.45%), and high SRL (23.88%). The profiles differed mainly in overall SRL, with broadly parallel patterns across the seven dimensions. Women and men showed the same low–average–high ordering, although corresponding profile means were not fully equivalent. Place of origin, financial hardship, family socioeconomic status, and first-generation status were associated with selected profile contrasts. Leadership efficacy, extracurricular engagement, and perceived teacher support were positively associated with higher-profile membership in separate models. Discussion The findings characterize SRL profiles among Chinese college students and reveal both similarities and differences across gender. The associations with extracurricular engagement, leadership efficacy, and teacher support highlight relevant personal and educational resources for student leadership development.
Global warming and climate change severely impact ecosystems and human safety, positioning the carbon credit market as a vital tool for emission reduction. This study aimed to identify necessary skills, develop a strategic plan, and construct a handbook for digital-age leaders in industrial carbon credit trading. Utilizing the Delphi method and a focus group discussion, data were gathered from 19 experts and stakeholders. Analysis combined qualitative thematic sorting with quantitative median and interquartile range (IQR) metrics. The findings revealed five core management skills (planning, organizing, commanding, coordinating, controlling), detailed into 25 sub-parts and 125 minor parts. This model integrates environmental knowledge with digital technology to enhance measurement, reporting, and verification efficiency. Experts verified the model's appropriateness, resulting in a two-part handbook outlining 12 execution pathways. Specialists confirmed the handbook is highly suitable for leadership development.

Purpose of Study: This study examined the influence of efficiency on the leadership development of Sunday school teachers in Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK) churches in Nairobi Diocese. It sought to establish whether teachers’ effective use of time, lesson preparation, reliability, and commitment contribute to leadership growth and identify areas requiring institutional support. Methodology: The study adopted a descriptive survey research design targeting approximately 616 Sunday school teachers across 77 parishes in nine archdeaconries. Stratified random sampling selected 268 teachers, of whom 179 completed structured questionnaires, yielding a 68% response rate. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and regression analysis in SPSS. Findings: Teachers rated their efficiency positively (mean = 3.79, SD = 1.09), particularly their reliability and recognition for teaching effectiveness (mean = 4.37). However, lesson preparation and children’s spiritual progress received lower ratings. Leadership development was also rated positively (mean = 3.57, SD = 0.89), although opportunities for formal leadership roles and participation in strategic planning remained limited. Regression analysis established a positive and statistically significant relationship between efficiency and leadership development (B = 0.180, β = 0.193, t = 2.625, p = .009). Efficiency explained 3.7% of the variation in leadership development (R² = 0.037), indicating that additional factors also influence leadership growth. Conclusion: Efficiency contributes significantly to leadership development among Sunday school teachers in ACK churches in Nairobi Diocese, although its explanatory influence is modest. Churches should recognise efficient teachers, provide regular training and mentoring, improve teaching resources, and create opportunities for participation in leadership, planning, and decision-making to strengthen leadership development.

As women's participation in higher education is increasing, their representation in leadership positions is still limited, especially in Indonesia. This study examines how educational design, including classroom pedagogy, co-curricular engagement, and experiential learning, can shape female students' leadership aspirations. This qualitative study is based on Social Cognitive Career Theory and Transformational Learning Theory. The analysis applied a systematic thematic coding procedure, supported by code-frequency mapping, theme co-occurrence analysis, and researcher triangulation, in order to strengthen the transparency and rigor of the analysis. The findings show that gender-inclusive learning climates, active learning methods such as discussions and presentations, and micro-leadership roles within group assignments can improve leadership self-efficacy and identity formation. Co-curricular and experiential learning opportunities can serve as mastery experiences, which can strengthen confidence and relational leadership skills. However, cultural expectations and family norms still influence how women translate their educational experiences into leadership ambitions. This study highlights the role of higher education and also digital and interactive learning environments as spaces that can support inclusive leadership development in non-Western contexts.
Over the past decades, school leadership has become a central element in educational reform, school improvement, and organizational effectiveness across education systems worldwide. Nevertheless, European education systems continue to reflect diverse governance arrangements shaped by national trajectories and institutional legacies. Although school leadership is widely recognized as a key determinant of educational effectiveness, comparatively limited research has examined how mentoring for school leaders is configured within distinct governance contexts. Addressing this gap, this study undertakes an analysis of six leadership trajectories from four European countries selected for their contrasting governance orientations: Portugal and Spain as cases reflecting traditions that tend to be more centralized, and Belgium and the Netherlands as cases characterized by a tendency toward greater decentralization and stronger school-level autonomy. Drawing on a critical examination of legislative and regulatory frameworks, complemented by in-depth interviews with school leaders, the research analyses how institutional configurations shape both access to leadership positions and the design, enactment, and perceived value of mentoring practices. Across the six leadership trajectories analyzed, participants consistently highlighted the importance of structured mentoring as a mechanism for reducing professional isolation, supporting leadership learning, and facilitating sustainable transitions into leadership roles. By integrating governance analysis with leadership development processes, the study advances a governance-sensitive conceptualization of mentoring as a structurally embedded mechanism for professional learning, contributing theoretically and empirically to contemporary debates on educational leadership in Europe.
University programme leaders occupy a pivotal position in shaping teaching and learning, yet their responsibilities are complex. Despite the significance of this role, programme leaders (PLs) frequently report limited access to structured leadership development (Cahill et al. Citation2015; Lawrence, Morón-García, and Senior Citation2022), prompting higher education institutions (HEIs) to introduce institutionally led interventions.Academic developers, educational developers and other higher education professionals (referred to from this point as academic developers) are often tasked with supporting programme leaders, but there are even fewer development opportunities available to support them in their roles. The Supporting Programme Leadership Development Network (SPLDN) was established to create a collaborative space for academic developers supporting programme leaders to share practice, foster connections and enhance support. This study aims to identify the need for and value of this network for staff in such roles.University staff supporting PL development were invited to complete a short online survey, reflecting the support they need and the benefits of belonging to a peer network.Findings from 30 respondents indicate a demand for opportunities to share practice, benchmark institutional approaches and develop evidence-informed support for programme leaders. Participants valued the SPLDN as a source of sector insight and as a space to create connections with those in a similar role. Importantly, engagement with the network was not limited to those new to supporting PLs; many participants had substantial experience in the area yet still noted benefits from engaging. These findings suggest that a peer network can offer academic developers access to peer learning, sector comparison and practice sharing throughout their career.
Educational leaders are increasingly expected to communicate and enact innovation within volatile and uncertain conditions. Yet strategic initiatives frequently stall because leaders struggle to articulate new ideas in ways that stakeholders can understand, trust, and meaningfully differentiate from past practice. This study examined how design-based professional learning using scenario planning can build innovation literacy-the communicative, imaginative, and symbolic capacity to describe emerging futures. Using a design-based research methodology, the study examined 161 educational leaders across six leadership groups who participated in a 10-month professional learning series incorporating scenario planning, futures thinking, and iterative design cycles. A graduate student cohort ( n = 11) completed a single adapted scenario-planning activity and provided a comparative case through which to examine the development of scenario literacy and innovation literacy in relation to leadership experience. Data sources included scenario artifacts, participant journals, field notes, session transcripts, and pre- and post-self-assessments. Quantitative data were analyzed descriptively and interpreted alongside qualitative evidence of shifts in participants' language, metaphors, and communicative practices. The triangulated findings indicated that leaders initially lacked scenario literacy and required explicit scaffolding to imagine plausible futures rather than reproduce current realities. As shared understandings of trust, disruption, and innovation developed, participants generated new metaphors, icons, and linguistic structures that enhanced communicative clarity. Participants also reported increased confidence and efficacy in describing innovations to stakeholders. The findings indicate that scenario planning, when embedded within a design-based professional learning structure, can expand educational leaders' communicative repertoires and strengthen system-level sensemaking. The study offers implications for leadership development, professional learning design, and the cultivation of the communicative capacities needed to lead innovation in complex educational environments.
