Assessment in Arabic language learning as a foreign language (Arabic as a Foreign Language) is currently undergoing a significant paradigm shift. This transformation is influenced by the development of digital technology, the utilization of Artificial Intelligence (AI), and the implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum in Indonesia, which emphasizes flexibility, differentiation, and learning personalization. This article presents a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) aimed at identifying, examining, and synthesizing developments, innovations, methodological approaches, and various challenges in the assessment of the four Arabic language skills, namely listening, speaking, reading, and writing, during the period from 2020 to early 2026. The review employed the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) protocol to identify and analyze relevant literature. The findings indicate a shift from conventional evaluation systems based on discrete tests toward the implementation of Technology-Enhanced Assessment (TEA) and more authentic forms of assessment. The literature synthesis reveals several key findings. First, diagnostic assessment, encompassing both cognitive and non-cognitive aspects, plays an important role in designing differentiated learning within the framework of the Merdeka Curriculum. Second, the development of assessment instruments for Arabic language maharah is increasingly oriented toward measuring higher-order thinking skills (Higher Order Thinking Skills/HOTS). Third, the utilization of Generative AI, including ChatGPT, as well as various gamification-based learning platforms, has introduced new approaches to providing faster, more adaptive, and interactive feedback. Based on the synthesis, the effectiveness of modern assessment is not determined solely by the sophistication of the technology employed, but also by the alignment between technology and pedagogical objectives, the transparency of assessment procedures, and its ability to comprehensively represent learners' communicative competence while maintaining the principles of academic integrity.
The emergence of generative artificial intelligence (Generative AI), such as ChatGPT, has brought significant changes to higher education, including Arabic language learning for non-native speakers (Arabic as a Foreign Language). Writing skills (Maharah al-Kitabah) are considered a relatively complex productive skill. Learners are required not only to master word formation (Sarf) and Arabic grammar (Nahwu), but also to organize ideas coherently and logically. This article employs a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach based on the PRISMA 2020 standards to map the use of ChatGPT in Arabic writing, examine the reliability of AI in Arabic grammar, and identify research gaps that remain underexplored. The review findings indicate that ChatGPT can serve as a useful writing partner (human-AI co-writer), particularly for generating ideas, enriching vocabulary, and correcting basic grammatical errors. However, AI still frequently produces errors or “hallucinations” when dealing with morphologically complex words, variations in Arabic dialects, and unvocalized texts. As a result, AI-generated writing may appear linguistically polished on the surface while containing grammatical inaccuracies. Furthermore, excessive reliance on AI may pose risks to academic integrity, while AI detection tools themselves often produce inaccurate results when identifying Arabic-language texts (false positives). This review also finds that existing research remains overly focused on English, tends to examine only the final writing outcomes without investigating students’ cognitive processes, and has paid limited attention to AI models specifically developed for the Arab region, such as ALLaM and Jais. Therefore, the approach to AI-assisted learning needs to shift from merely using AI toward purposeful and reflective utilization through frameworks such as the Spiral Learning Model and Genre-Based Pedagogy, so that AI functions as a scaffold without diminishing students’ autonomy and critical thinking.
The rapid proliferation of generative artificial intelligence in educational contexts has transformed how students encounter academic content, yet a fundamental question remains underexamined: Do English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners possess the critical literacy competencies needed to evaluate AI-generated texts? This study investigated whether students in Morocco’s Classes Préparatoires aux Grandes Écoles (CPGE)—one of the nation’s most academically selective post-secondary programs—demonstrate readiness for AI-era literacy demands. We developed a diagnostic assessment instrument, the Critical Reading Diagnostic Assessment (CRDA), designed to mirror common characteristics of AI-generated academic content: a confident, authoritative tone, a logical structure with subtle gaps, claims requiring verification, and culturally embedded assumptions. Thirty first-year CPGE students (M age = 18.6 years) evaluated argumentative passages across five critical dimensions: argument identification, evidence evaluation, assumption recognition, multi-source synthesis, and source criticism. Metacognitive self-assessment data were also collected. Results revealed systematic evaluation failures across all dimensions, with mean accuracy rates of only 18–39% and large effect sizes confirming substantial deficits (d = 1.11–2.25). Metacognitive analysis showed that students overestimated their abilities by 11–38 percentage points across all dimensions, indicating profound self-assessment inaccuracies.
Generative AI, and more precisely large language models, have nowadays rapidly become useful in education, professional work, and everyday tasks. While these systems offer notable benefits to make work efficient and improved accessibility, the recent evidence suggests that their usage has cognitive costs. This paper presents a structured review of 16 reviewed studies investigating the impact of Gen AI usage on cognitive offloading, metacognitive engagement, automation bias, and human skill. By studying experimental, survey-based, qualitative, and theoretical research, this review synthesizes several findings across several fields to identify recurring mechanisms through which GenAI usage reshapes cognition. Our analysis reveals a consistent pattern, where GenAI often improves short-term task performance, but it frequently minimizes effortful cognitive processing, diminishes self-regulation, and changes skill developments. Rather than constant de-skilling, this paper points out reconfiguration of skills, favoring efficiency-oriented competencies such as prompting and verification over generative reasoning and critical reflection. Our study further highlights these outcomes are not unavoidable but are strongly mediated by interaction design, educational practices, and socio-technical environments. By showing these effects as the “cost of convenience,” this paper contributes an integrative perspective on the cognitive effects of Gen AI and highlighting the ways to make AI design, education, and governance cognitively sustainable.
Generative artificial intelligence is fundamentally reshaping the cognitive conditions of knowledge innovation. While human–AI collaboration improves the efficiency of knowledge production, it may also induce creators to outsourcing cognitive work to AI systems. This study conceptualized this tendency as task-level metacognitive disengagement, defined as the immediate reduction of planning, monitoring, and reflection within a specific AI-assisted task, and, drawing on metacognition theory, cognitive offloading theory and self-regulated learning theory, examined its impact on knowledge innovation quality, its psychological mechanism, and boundary conditions through four complementary experiments. Experiment 1 showed that higher AI assistance significantly increased metacognitive disengagement. Experiment 2 revealed that cognitive offloading partially mediated the relationship between AI assistance and metacognitive disengagement. Experiment 3 confirmed the negative effect of cognitive offloading on knowledge innovation quality, specifically on novelty, usefulness, and developability, with metacognitive disengagement partially mediating this effect. Experiment 4 tested the proposed moderated mediation model and found that task complexity strengthened, whereas individual AI literacy weakened, the negative indirect effect of cognitive offloading on knowledge innovation quality through metacognitive disengagement. These findings reveal a hidden cognitive cost behind the efficiency gains of human–AI collaboration and provide empirical evidence and theoretical implications for cultivating innovative talent and designing human–AI collaborative mechanisms in the era of artificial intelligence.
Digital media has evolved from passive screen viewing into an algorithmically curated ecosystem of social platforms, short form video, games, generative artificial intelligence (AI), conversational agents, connected toys and educational technologies. These systems can support learning, creativity, communication, disability access and healthcare; however, engagement optimized design, commercial surveillance and synthetic content create risks that are not adequately captured by screen-time measures alone. This narrative review examines the effects of contemporary digital ecosystems on child and adolescent health and outlines implications for pediatric practice. PubMed/MEDLINE, Google Scholar and guidance from the World Health Organization, United Nations Children's Fund, UNESCO and the American Academy of Pediatrics were reviewed, with emphasis on evidence published from 2019 to June 2026. Associations have been reported between problematic digital media use and sleep disruption, reduced physical activity, visual and musculoskeletal symptoms, obesity related behaviours, anxiety, depressive symptoms, cyberbullying, disordered eating and impaired attention. Causal interpretation remains difficult because effects are heterogeneous, often small, bidirectional and strongly modified by age, content, context, displacement, family relationships and pre-existing vulnerability. AI adds distinct concerns: persuasive personalization, inaccurate health information, anthropomorphic dependency, deepfakes, sexual exploitation, biased outputs, privacy loss and erosion of learning through uncritical outsourcing. Benefits are also substantial when technologies are developmentally appropriate, evidence-based, inclusive and used with adult support. Pediatric counselling should shift from counting hours alone toward assessing the child's digital ecosystem, sleep, function, content, compulsivity, safety and relationships. Effective protection requires shared family practices, school digital literacy, safety by design, age-appropriate assurance, transparent algorithms, data minimization and independent research. The goal is not a screen free childhood but a child centred digital environment that supports health, agency and development.
Higher education has historically operated under a paradigm of information scarcity, positioning universities as premier institutions for curating and transmitting knowledge. The convergence of digital hyper-abundance, algorithmic curation, and generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) has disrupted this model, producing what educators increasingly describe as a crisis of critical thinking in higher education. The purpose of this review is to examine how information abundance, algorithmic curation, and GenAI use may influence university students’ critical thinking, and to synthesise what this evidence implies for what universities teach and how they assess. Using a critical narrative review design with thematic synthesis, the review analyses 45 verified sources (empirical studies, systematic reviews and meta-analyses, conceptual works, and policy guidance) identified through citation chaining and targeted searches; empirical GenAI studies date from November 2022 to 2026, and foundational theoretical works from 1976 onward. The synthesis is anchored in an integrative framework that combines cognitive load and dual-process theory, cognitive offloading, scaffolding theory, self-regulated learning, and epistemic cognition, with critical thinking as the principal outcome. Five themes emerged: (1) information abundance appears to shift the central cognitive challenge from retrieval to evaluation; (2) unguided GenAI use is associated with reduced cognitive engagement and, in several experiments, with weaker independent performance once AI support is removed, although guardrailed designs appear to mitigate this; (3) fluent AI output can be mistaken for validated knowledge, and AI-detection tools are unreliable and biased; (4) lateral reading, guided AI use, and process-visible assessment have promising but uneven support; and (5) workload, equity, and policy constraints limit adoption. From these themes, the review derives the Fade–Visibility Matrix, which crosses AI support structure (persistent versus fading) with assessment design (product-only versus process-visible) to yield four diagnostic states. The evidence is early and methodologically uneven, but it is most consistent with a structural rather than individual explanation. Universities should therefore teach evaluation, verification, and metacognitive regulation explicitly, design AI support to fade, and redesign assessment so that the learning process, not only the finished product, can be observed.
Background The emergence of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI), particularly ChatGPT, offers new possibilities for mathematics learning in higher education. Although ChatGPT can provide explanations, examples, guiding questions, and feedback, its use in Abstract Algebra courses has largely been limited to answering questions and verifying mathematical answers or proofs. This study analyses pre-service mathematics teachers’ mathematical communication when interacting with ChatGPT through seven indicators, including: interpreting formal definitions; using mathematical terms, symbols, variables, and notation appropriately; constructing examples, non-examples, and counter-examples; explaining relationships between algebraic objects and their properties; justifying arguments or proofs; evaluating the validity of mathematical responses; and formulating coherent conclusions. Method A qualitative case study involved 18 pre-service mathematics teachers enrolled in an Abstract Algebra course in the department of mathematics education at a public university in Bandung City, West Java, Indonesia. Data comprised written dialogues between the pre-service mathematics teachers and ChatGPT while solving Abstract Algebra problems and were analysed using the seven indicators. Results The findings indicate that the pre-service mathematics teachers’ mathematical communication generally ranged from developing to adequate. They performed relatively well in using terminology and notation, constructing examples or counter-examples, and explaining relationships among algebraic objects and properties. However, justification, critical evaluation of ChatGPT responses, and independent conclusion-making remained weak. While some pre-service mathematics teachers accepted inaccurate AI responses, others identified and connected them. Conclusion The findings suggest that GenAI should serve as a dialogue partner and scaffolding, rather than an authority on mathematical truth. Mathematics course should emphasise verification, justification, critical evaluation, and argument reconstruction to foster independent mathematical communication skills.
Generative AI tools that condense texts into summaries have become a routine part of student reading routines, and educators increasingly worry that convenient summaries displace the effortful processing on which deep comprehension depends. This study drew on cognitive offloading theory and the levels-of-processing framework to test a moderated mediation model in which elaborative processing statistically links generative AI summarization tool use to deep reading comprehension, and reading motivation moderates the negative association between tool use and processing. Undergraduate students ( N = 608; 53.6% female; mean age 19.9 years) from three universities in Changchun, China, completed a six-item scale of generative AI summarization tool use, an eight-item elaborative processing scale adapted from the deep-processing subscale of the R-SPQ-2F, a seven-item reading motivation measure adapted from the Motivation for Reading Questionnaire, and a researcher-developed deep reading comprehension test. Scale reliabilities were satisfactory (Cronbach alpha = 0.88, 0.87, and 0.86). Tool use correlated negatively with elaborative processing ( r = −0.41) and comprehension ( r = −0.24); elaborative processing correlated positively with comprehension ( r = 0.59). PROCESS analyses (Model 7) with 5,000 bootstrap resamples showed that tool use negatively predicted elaborative processing ( b = −0.310, p < 0.001) and that this association weakened as reading motivation rose (interaction b = 0.433, p < 0.001). Elaborative processing, in turn, predicted comprehension ( b = 10.097, p < 0.001), whereas the residual direct path of tool use did not reach significance. The indirect effect of tool use on comprehension through elaborative processing was significant and negative at low (−6.142, 95% BC CI [−7.353, −5.091]) and average (−3.130, [−3.851, −2.497]) reading motivation but nonsignificant at high reading motivation (−0.117, [−0.876, 0.629]); the index of moderated mediation was 4.374 [3.428, 5.402]. These results are consistent with an account in which elaborative processing statistically links summary reliance to lower deep reading, with reading motivation associated with a weaker negative indirect association; given the cross-sectional design, the modeled paths represent associations rather than established causal effects. They suggest that motivation-oriented reading instruction should accompany, rather than follow, the integration of AI tools into academic reading.
Complex social processes like migration are frequently understood via metaphors. In right-wing media and far-right political discourses, two metaphors that abound draw on flood and invasion frames to problematise immigration and legitimise hostile attitudes and actions towards it. In so far as metaphor involves the construction of mental imagery, it is intimately bound with visual experience, including semiotically mediated visual experience. In a semiotic landscape increasingly populated by synthetic images, I argue that the meaning of metaphors may be modulated by AI-generated visual content and that this is especially important in contexts of political communication. The study investigates images generated by prompts instantiating an immigration is flood versus an immigration is invasion metaphor to inquire if and how they differ by source-frame and what are the ideological implications of the images returned. Following an initial pilot study, several specific semiotic features are analysed, including colour, properties of the figure (size, shape, orientation) and ground elements (environment, securitising features and frame-consistent features like fire and water). Results show significant differences between metaphorical frames and highlight the potential that AI-generated images have to reflect and reinforce ideological positions.
Despite scientific argumentation being a fundamental competency of the PISA assessment framework, prospective biology teachers often demonstrate insufficient development in evidence-based reasoning and rebuttal construction skills. Considering the limitations of large-scale implementation of individualized approaches in higher education, this study evaluates the effectiveness of Generative Artificial Intelligence (ChatGPT-4) configured as a “Socratic tutor” in developing argumentation skills among future educators. An 8-week quasi-experimental study involving 124 students from a pedagogical university employed traditional peer discussion methods in the control group ( n = 62), while the experimental group ( n = 62) utilized an AI agent that induced cognitive dissonance regarding socio-scientific issues. Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) of data obtained through Toulmin's Argument Pattern (TAP) and PISA rubrics confirmed that the experimental group achieved statistically significantly higher overall argumentation quality compared to the control group (F (1,121) = 14.23, p < .001, η 2 = .105). Particularly, participants who received AI-assisted instruction showed marked improvement in forming rebuttals and evaluating counterevidence, which are considered among the most cognitively demanding components within the PISA scientific literacy framework (OECD). These findings suggest that a Generative AI-mediated Socratic instructional package can be an effective and scalable approach for developing epistemic cognition, and they propose a pedagogical model for integrating structured AI-based tutoring into teacher preparation systems aligned with international assessment standards. These findings should be interpreted as evidence for the effectiveness of the structured, AI-mediated Socratic instructional package as a whole, rather than as evidence of AI's inherent superiority over other methods; the relative contribution of the AI medium versus the structured pedagogical protocol it delivers was not directly tested in this design.
Artificial intelligence (AI) is now part of everyday academic work in higher education, including feedback. However, AI feedback does not automatically lead to learning. It can help students rethink a concept, improve a draft, and notice gaps in their work, but it can also create a false sense of progress when students accept suggestions without understanding them. This Perspective article argues that responsible AI feedback depends on faculty readiness and students’ evaluative judgement. Readiness is not mainly technical. It involves pedagogical judgement: knowing how to design tasks in which students work with feedback, compare it with evidence, revise with purpose, explain their choices, and remain responsible for the final submission. The article focuses on generative AI feedback and uses metacognitive calibration as a central concept. Calibration refers to the relationship between students’ confidence or self-judgement and independently evaluated evidence of performance. Evaluative judgement concerns students’ capacity to judge the quality and relevance of feedback and work, whereas calibration concerns the accuracy of their judgements relative to independently evaluated performance evidence. The article shows how ideas from feedback literacy, evaluative judgement, and self-regulated learning need to be adapted when feedback comes from systems whose accuracy and educational value cannot be assumed. It proposes a conceptual responsible AI feedback design cycle linked to assessment integrity, university policy, and faculty development. Although the cycle requires empirical testing, it offers a practical way to support reflection, calibrated judgement, and accountability without replacing students’ thinking.
Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) creates a distinctive problem for outdoor geoscience learning: it can broaden questioning and explanation, yet it can also pre-structure what learners notice and displace their interpretation of field evidence. Existing field-learning frameworks explain how conceptual, geographical, psychological, technical, and social novelty shape participation, but they do not fully explain this redistribution of epistemic work and authority. Extending established accounts of technological mediation to field settings, this Hypothesis and Theory article interprets GenAI as an epistemic reorganization of field inquiry rather than as technical novelty alone. It advances the central hypothesis that GenAI is more likely to augment, rather than displace, learners’ epistemic agency when it is introduced after direct observation and an initial learner interpretation, restricted to generating questions and candidate explanations, and subjected to human adjudication against field evidence. On this basis, the article proposes a six-stage human-centered model: preparing for field and GenAI use; attending to and recording field evidence; constructing an initial learner interpretation; engaging GenAI as a dialogic challenger; conducting human evidence-based adjudication; and completing reflective synthesis and epistemic accounting. Field evidence functions as an epistemic constraint, GenAI outputs remain provisional objects of scrutiny, and learners and teachers retain interpretive authority and responsibility. Six testable propositions specify expected effects of sequencing, initial interpretation, challenger-oriented prompting, explicit adjudication, substitution, and teacher orchestration. Operational criteria for distinguishing support, mediation, and substitution, and a thought experiment at a basalt outcrop, show how the model can be applied and tested. The model offers a falsifiable agenda for research in physical, hybrid, and virtual geoscience field learning while defining conditions under which GenAI use should be limited or withheld.
Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly reshaping higher education assessment through applications such as automated feedback, adaptive testing, learning analytics, automated scoring, and generative support. Yet scholarship on AI-enabled assessment remains fragmented across technical, pedagogical, ethical, governance, and professional perspectives, limiting the field’s capacity to explain how these dimensions interact in practice and how misalignment among them affects educational legitimacy. This paper develops the AI-Assessment Ecosystem Model, a conceptual ecosystem framework for analysing AI in higher education assessment as a sociotechnical and institutional phenomenon rather than a discrete technical intervention. Drawing on a conceptual synthesis of literature published primarily between 2019 and 2024, and informed by foundational work on assessment validity, feedback, institutional legitimacy, organisational change, inclusive design, and computer-supported collaborative learning, the paper identifies five interdependent domains that shape AI-enabled assessment: technological innovation, pedagogical alignment and learner needs, institutional strategy and governance, faculty and professional readiness, and ethical and inclusive implementation. The paper theorises legitimacy as a relational and contested process through which AI-supported assessment must be justified to students, faculty, institutions, regulators, and other stakeholders as educationally valid, professionally defensible, ethically acceptable, inclusive, and organisationally accountable. The framework argues that AI in assessment cannot be adequately evaluated by technical capability, implementation success, or ethical compliance alone; it must be understood through the relations, tensions, and potential misalignments among educational purpose, organisational conditions, professional practice, student agency, and technological design. The model is offered as a conceptual ecosystem framework for guiding future research, critique, and institutional decision-making.
The rapid adoption of generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools such as ChatGPT in second language (L2) writing instruction has produced a fast-growing body of research on AI-generated written corrective feedback. Two recent scoping reviews have mapped this literature broadly, focusing on feedback quality, learner uptake and pedagogical integration. However, neither review specifically examined how this literature treats grammatical and lexical development as distinct, measurable constructs, nor how it addresses the moderating role of learner proficiency over time. This scoping review synthesizes 30 empirical and methodological sources, identified through a targeted, PRISMA-ScR-informed search of Google Scholar, Scopus-indexed journal content and ERIC, together with citation networks, to map the state of longitudinal research on generative-AI-mediated feedback and grammatical-lexical development in L2/EFL writing. The review finds that most intervention studies remain limited to a single semester or shorter, that grammatical accuracy and lexical development are rarely measured as separate, co-tracked outcomes and that only a small number of very recent studies (2025-2026) have applied longitudinal growth-modelling techniques, none of which disentangle grammar from vocabulary or systematically test proficiency level as a moderator of developmental trajectories. No such study appears to have been conducted in the Vietnamese EFL context, based on the sources identified in this review. The review proposes a research agenda for longitudinal, multi-proficiency-level, construct-differentiated research on generative-AI-mediated feedback and outlines implications for instructional design and future primary research.
Generative artificial intelligence (AI) has intensified longstanding questions about teachers' roles and the pedagogical conditions under which technology supports learner autonomy. This qualitatively driven embedded mixed-methods study examined practices reported and represented by Israeli teachers during an eight-week professional development program on AI, self-regulated learning, and learner-centered pedagogy. The primary qualitative strand drew on reflections, open-ended questionnaire responses, lesson plans, and pedagogical artifacts and used a hybrid deductive-inductive analysis. An exploratory quantitative strand compared 61 consenting pre-program submissions with 26 consenting post-program submissions. Because submissions were anonymous and unlinked, Welch independent-samples tests were used. Post-program means were descriptively higher for reflective teaching, AI-supported planning, and inquiry-oriented design, and essentially unchanged for differentiated instruction; none of the four comparisons was statistically significant after Holm adjustment. Qualitative analysis generated five interconnected dimensions: designing for learner agency, self-regulated teaching and reflection, AI-supported learning design, designing for capability development, and critical AI literacy. The findings support a dual-layer interpretation in which teachers' reflective regulation and critical judgment mediate the design of opportunities intended to support learner agency and capability. Because the study measured teachers' reports and artifacts rather than students' experiences or outcomes, its contribution concerns pedagogical intentions and professional learning, not demonstrated gains in learner agency.
Introduction Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) is increasingly used by students to obtain explanations, generate ideas, improve written responses and prepare assessment tasks. However, limited evidence exists on how students in open-distance alternative-access programmes experience GenAI in mathematics assessment. Methods This qualitative study examined how 27 Higher Certificate students at a South African open and distance learning institution described the role, benefits and limitations of GenAI while preparing fraction-related portfolio activities. Data were collected via a single open-ended questionnaire item, completed voluntarily after all assessment activities had been submitted. The responses were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis. Results Four overlapping themes were identified: support for understanding and approaching tasks, support for constructing written responses, conditional trust and evaluative engagement, and non-use, resistance and ambiguous engagement. Students reported that GenAI assisted with clarification, examples, organisation, and language, but they also described outputs they perceived as inaccurate, overly general, or insufficiently explained. Ten participants expressed concerns about reliability or described checking, adapting, limiting or rejecting GenAI use, although the study did not verify the quality of these practices. Discussion The findings suggest that the educational value of GenAI is shaped by students' capacity to exercise judgement and retain responsibility for the reasoning represented in their work. Verification is therefore positioned as a potentially important epistemic practice in GenAI-supported mathematics assessment. The study recommends explicit discipline-specific guidance and assessment designs that make students' mathematical reasoning visible.
Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) is increasingly embedded in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) instruction, with self-regulated learning (SRL) and learner autonomy positioned as key outcomes of interest. A growing evidence base reports positive effects of GenAI on self-regulatory strategies, alongside a parallel and largely separate literature warning that GenAI use may foster dependency, cognitive offloading and the externalization of self-monitoring. This scoping review maps this apparent paradox, in which GenAI appears simultaneously as scaffolding and as substitution, across the SRL and learner-autonomy literature, with particular attention to its implications for EFL learners. Following a PRISMA-ScR-informed approach, 12 empirical and review studies published between 2025 and 2026 were thematically synthesized alongside four foundational theoretical works. As a result, four thematic clusters emerged: (1) evidence of GenAI functioning as scaffolding for SRL; (2) evidence of GenAI functioning as substitution, fostering dependency and cognitive offloading; (3) design and timing features that moderate which role GenAI plays; and (4) existing reviews and meta-analyses, together with their methodological limitations. Across clusters, a consistent pattern emerges, in that nearly all studies rely on short-term or cross-sectional designs, and several recent reviews explicitly call for research measuring learners’ delayed, unsupported performance so as to distinguish durable internalization from temporary dependency. No identified study has applied a longitudinal design incorporating a structured AI-withdrawal phase to directly test this distinction among EFL learners. This review argues for such a design and outlines its theoretical and methodological implications for Vietnamese EFL contexts.
Reflective freewriting holds a distinctive place in ESL writing pedagogy as a low-stakes, exploratory practice in which learners articulate tentative thinking before it is shaped by evaluative demands. The rapid integration of generative AI (GenAI) into second language (L2) writing now threatens to absorb reflective freewriting into a wider regime of AI-mediated production, reducing reflection to one more output to be generated, polished or summarised. This article argues that this loss is not only pedagogical but ontological. Drawing on Biesta’s theory of subjectification, the article conceptualises reflective freewriting as subjectifying writing, functioning as a site of existential encounter with the world, where the learner uses language to respond in their own name. The article introduces the construct of algorithmic foreclosure to describe the structural tendency of GenAI systems to short-circuit this existential response, substituting generated text for the indeterminate work of subjectification. Together, these constructs support a case for protecting reflective freewriting as a non-AI-mediated space within L2 writing pedagogy.
Background Against the backdrop of digital empowerment, generative artificial intelligence has been widely applied in school-age children’s reading education, and digital reading has become one of the primary types of environmental exposure for school-age children. However, school-age children face challenges such as insufficient age-appropriate content and uncontrollable physical and mental strain. There is an urgent demand for a public health intervention model that balances reading-related health benefits, prevents and controls digital exposure risks, avoids physical and mental health impairments, and adapts to school-age children from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds. Methods A retrospective control study design was used in this study. A total of 100 cases of school-age children aged 6–12 were collected from the standardized intervention archive of our institution from September 2025 to December 2025. According to the intervention plan actually accepted in the archive records, they were divided into the collaborative intervention group and the AI-only reading group with 50 cases in each group. In the AI-only reading group, the recorded intervention is purely generative AI independent reading intervention (college students are only responsible for equipment operation and maintenance, and do not participate in reading guidance and emotional intervention), while in the collaborative intervention group, the recorded intervention is the structured auxiliary collaborative intervention of the whole process of generative AI voice multi-round interactive reading combined with standardized training for college students. The intervention period is 12 weeks, three times a week, and each time is 20–25 min. Retrospective analysis of longitudinal data at baseline, 6 weeks of intervention, 12 weeks of follow-up and 4 weeks of follow-up, with the comprehensive score of early reading as the only preset main outcome index, repeated measurement analysis of variance, independent sample t -test and chi-square test were used to analyze the inter-group and time effects, Cohen’s d was used to evaluate the effect, and the test level was α = 0.05. Results Retrospective archive data shows that, after intervention, the collaborative intervention group achieved significantly higher composite early reading scores, phonological awareness, vocabulary comprehension accuracy, reading attention duration and reading interest scores than the AI-only reading group ( p < 0.05). The main effects of group, time and the group-time interaction were all highly statistically significant ( p < 0.01), with an effect size of Cohen’s d = 0.50 representing a moderate intervention effect. The collaborative intervention group also showed significantly higher intervention adherence rate, AI interaction completion rate, reading task completion rate and frequency of active participation than the AI-only reading group ( p < 0.05). In terms of digital health-related outcomes, the collaborative intervention group had significantly lower incidence of adverse psychological states, incidence of prodromal signs of visual fatigue and digital eye strain symptoms, and study dropout rate ( p < 0.05). Among the digital health-related safety indicators, the incidence of negative emotions, visual fatigue and research dropout rate were significantly lower than those of the AI-only reading group ( p < 0.05). The archived records showed that the whole screen duration was strictly in compliance, and there was no privacy leakage and serious adverse events. The 10% lost visit rate was controllable, and the complete rate of informed consent and the qualified rate of implementation were all 100%, and there was no privacy leakage and serious adverse events. Conclusion The generative AI interaction mode paired with college student auxiliary support is associated with sustained improvement school-age children’s core early reading ability via cumulative short-term follow-up effects. Meanwhile, this collaborative model enables effective management of digital environmental exposure risks and may reduce risks related to visual and psychological health among school-age children. The intergroup differences remained stable with reliable effect sizes. This intervention model can be may provide a reference for future implementation as a digital public health intervention targeting school-age children’s early reading, and provides preliminary empirical evidence for the standardized application of AI-supported education for school-age children. This retrospective study only reflects the differences between groups of compound intervention programs in archived cases, and cannot establish strong causal inference.
This Hypothesis and Theory paper addresses a design problem at the center of AI-assisted research writing: which cognitive demands should AI reduce, and which must remain the writer’s own work. Generative AI can absorb the effort of drafting, organizing, and synthesizing prose, but that same effort is where understanding takes shape. Recent empirical work documents reduced neural engagement, weaker recall of one’s own writing, and a diminished sense of authorship among writers who rely heavily on AI assistance. The paper grounds this problem in cognitive load theory, which distinguishes intrinsic load (the element interactivity a task inherently requires) from extraneous load (demands that do not contribute to learning), and which treats germane processes as the working memory resources a writer allocates to intrinsic load. It draws on productive struggle and generative processing to explain why germane processing cannot be offloaded: when a tool performs the work, the processing does not transfer to the writer; it does not occur. Two research questions are posed. First, which cognitive demands in research writing constitute extraneous load that AI could reduce, and which require germane processing that must remain the writer’s own. Second, how can human-in-the-loop AI collaboration be designed across the phases of research writing so that this distinction is operationalized through human judgment? The contribution is a nine-phase conceptual framework mapped to the sections of a research paper, from curiosity and inquiry through references and submission. Each phase specifies the dominant cognitive demand, the AI role (ranging from minimal involvement to full collaboration), and design guidelines for tools and interactions. The framework addresses research writing from secondary school (grades 9–12) through postdoctoral and professional research, across disciplines. It treats phase-aware AI use as responsive pedagogy applied to research writing: instruction and tool design that respond to the cognitive demands of the task rather than to the tool’s capabilities. The paper draws implications for the design of responsive digital education, including tool selection, assessment, equity, and support for writers with cognitive differences. The framework is intended to preserve the cognitive work that makes research meaningful.
Community-engaged Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) is increasingly positioned as a mechanism for advancing graduate employability and social responsibility, yet the frameworks used to evaluate it remain anchored to countable proxies: employment rates, satisfaction scores, and placement completions. This provocation argues that these metrics are structurally misaligned with what WIL practitioners actually know about placement quality: knowledge that is relational, contextually rich, and routinely invisible in institutional reporting. As Generative AI enters WIL evaluation, this misalignment becomes urgent. Automating existing frameworks will not resolve their limitations, and risks further marginalising the evidence that most reliably signals whether community-engaged WIL is working. Drawing on research into practitioner agency in learning analytics, this provocation calls for evaluation frameworks that legitimise practitioner judgement, centre community partner perspectives, and deploy GenAI in service of relational knowledge rather than as a substitute for it. Effective WIL evaluation is not primarily a measurement problem, it is a question of whose evidence counts.
Background Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly changing education through generative AI, adaptive learning systems, automated assessment, intelligent teaching, and data-driven learning support. More and more AI-powered systems are mediating learning, communication, information searching, and, in some cases, emotional support. These technologies offer great promise for enhancing access, personalization, efficiency, and learner engagement, but they also present substantial psychological, ethical, and developmental problems. These challenges are exacerbated in Sub-Saharan Africa by inequalities in digital access, inadequate regulatory capacity, insufficient data-protection systems, language and cultural under-representation, and uneven institutional preparation. Policy and implications In this policy brief, we look at AI in education from the perspective of educational psychology, with a special emphasis on student well-being, learner agency, and resilience. It proposes that AI governance should extend beyond considerations of technology adoption and academic efficiency to explore how AI impacts autonomy, motivation, critical thinking, creativity, social relationships, psychological safety, and autonomous learning. The report emphasizes the importance of learner-centered national AI policies, age-appropriate safeguards, increased teacher capacity, inclusion of AI literacy in curricula, safeguarding of learner data, equal access to digital technology, culturally relevant artificial intelligence systems, and meaningful student participation in AI governance. Policies should ensure that AI is used to promote learning, yet safeguard student well-being, autonomy, privacy, dignity, and cognitive growth. It also underscores the need for African-led research and cross-sector collaboration to generate context-specific information on the long-term implications of AI for learners. Recommendations The brief argues that the success of AI integration in Sub-Saharan African education should be gauged not just by the acceptance of technology, but by its contribution to psychologically healthy, critically thinking, resilient, and autonomous learners. Conclusions A human-centered approach is therefore very important to ensuring that AI is a help and not a hindrance to the developmental and relational underpinnings of education.
