This article examines the differences between human judgment and algorithmic decision-making in critical logistics systems, focusing on the implications for the concepts of trust and control. The aim of the study is to determine whether AI-based systems can perform functions equivalent to human judgment and what implications this has for operational safety and accountability in complex logistics systems. The study is based on an interdisciplinary analysis, including a review of the literature on artificial intelligence, system safety, and human factors research, as well as a philosophical analysis. This is supplemented by a case study of selected incidents related to the operation of automated systems in high-risk environments, which allows the identification of practical limitations in integrating humans and algorithmic systems. The results indicate that decisions generated by algorithmic systems are statistical and optimization-based, which distinguishes them from human judgment, which takes into account context, uncertainty, and emotions. Consequently, trust in AI systems takes the form of an indirect, user-dependent relationship rather than an autonomous property of the technology. At the same time, increasing levels of automation lead to a diffusion of responsibility and a reduction in direct control over decision-making processes. The findings indicate that full automation of decisions in critical safety systems. Consequently, trust in AI systems takes the form of an indirect, user-dependent relationship rather than an autonomous property of the technology.

Advancing Mental Health Support Through Orange Technology and Empathetic Artificial Intelligence

Dwi Julianingsih; Tasya Syafira; Sheila Aulia Anjani Health Empathy and AI Learning (HEAL), 2026, Vol. 2, Issue 1 https://doi.org/10.68012/heal.v2i1.272

Mental health systems face a persistent gap in accessible, continuous, and person-centred support. Conversational AI can expand access to psychoeducation, emotional check-ins, self-management, and service navigation, but may also introduce risks of digital exclusion, cultural mismatch, privacy concerns, unsafe advice, and overreliance on automation. This paper develops a conceptual framework integrating Orange Technology, which promotes emotional wellbeing, cultural sensitivity, social connectedness, and resilience, with empathetic AI for mental health support. An integrative literature review examined peer-reviewed systematic reviews and WHO and UN guidance published from 2021 to 2026. Evidence suggests that conversational AI can improve depression, distress, anxiety, and engagement, although effects are heterogeneous and may decline over time. Personalization and empathic interaction may enhance engagement, while the framework's effects on community resilience, cultural sensitivity, and community resource integration require further empirical validation. The framework therefore positions AI as a supportive, human-in-the-loop layer rather than a replacement for clinicians, families, peers, or communities. It connects emotional sensing, empathetic dialogue, personalized support, escalation pathways, community connection, inclusive access, and governance, while aligning mental health innovation with SDG 3, 9, and 17.

The Cost of Convenience in Human-AI interaction: Cognitive Offloading and Skill Reconfiguration

Samriddhi Gautam; Samarth Dubey; Praveena Joshi Praveena Joshi; Shreyas Pagare International Journal of Research and Review in Applied Science Humanities and Technology, 2026, Vol. 3, Issue 4, pp. 35-43 https://doi.org/10.71143/eyz05m97

Generative AI, and more precisely large language models, have nowadays rapidly become useful in education, professional work, and everyday tasks. While these systems offer notable benefits to make work efficient and improved accessibility, the recent evidence suggests that their usage has cognitive costs. This paper presents a structured review of 16 reviewed studies investigating the impact of Gen AI usage on cognitive offloading, metacognitive engagement, automation bias, and human skill. By studying experimental, survey-based, qualitative, and theoretical research, this review synthesizes several findings across several fields to identify recurring mechanisms through which GenAI usage reshapes cognition. Our analysis reveals a consistent pattern, where GenAI often improves short-term task performance, but it frequently minimizes effortful cognitive processing, diminishes self-regulation, and changes skill developments. Rather than constant de-skilling, this paper points out reconfiguration of skills, favoring efficiency-oriented competencies such as prompting and verification over generative reasoning and critical reflection. Our study further highlights these outcomes are not unavoidable but are strongly mediated by interaction design, educational practices, and socio-technical environments. By showing these effects as the “cost of convenience,” this paper contributes an integrative perspective on the cognitive effects of Gen AI and highlighting the ways to make AI design, education, and governance cognitively sustainable.

Foundations of operator state monitoring system development in aviation

Katharine Woodruff; Andrew Thatcher; Güliz Tokadlı; Tyler Gandy; Nicholas Jones Frontiers in Physiology, 2026, Vol. 17 https://doi.org/10.3389/fphys.2026.1887848

The role and responsibilities of pilots have been evolving as advanced automation systems are being integrated for flight operations. Operator state monitoring (OSM) helps ensure safety and improve performance by detecting and predicting degraded operator state during operations. Despite growing interest in OSM, no unified framework exists that integrates impairment definitions, sensor criteria, and interface design requirements. This work is presented as a conceptual analysis that establishes a foundational framework for operator state monitoring system (OSMS) development, addressing what an OSMS should monitor, what types of operator state changes should be detected, the characteristics of sensing and communication needed to support these functions and the operational considerations that should inform future development. A literature review establishes potential impairment and incapacitation events for pilots, identifies relevant physiological features to support detection of these events, and assess the possible impact of such events on flight operations to inform a system response. Existing work concentrates on military and automotive contexts and on workload, fatigue, and drowsiness rather than the acute-event end of the impairment continuum; the framework developed here spans the normal to impaired to incapacitated range required for in-flight operations. OSMSs should be developed based on a multi-modal data approach consisting of physiological features, pilot performance and activity, aircraft state and environmental data, as well as contain a means for pilots to self-report input. Heart, breathing, and behavioral features are affected across the widest range of events, making them broad-coverage candidates for sensor selection, though breadth of coverage is distinct from diagnostic specificity and no single feature is treated as a standalone indicator. The remaining recommendations address the engineering of sensing and processing for the flight deck. Design guidance for the alert and notification interface is presented alongside the recommendations. As OSMSs mature, this framework can serve as a critical reference for developing robust, reliable, and widely accepted solutions in aviation.

Driver Responses to Mismatches Between Expected and Experienced Automated Vehicle Driving Styles

M. J. Lee; Brandon J. Pitts International Journal of Human-Computer Interaction, 2026, pp. 1-25 https://doi.org/10.1080/10447318.2026.2739750

Automated vehicles (AV) can exhibit diverse driving behaviors that deviate from driver expectations. More research is needed to understand drivers’ preferred driving styles when navigating safety-critical situations as well as their responses to unexpected AV driving behaviors. Forty-eight participants experienced simulated automated driving scenarios where an AV navigated a construction zone while exhibiting four different predefined driving styles that varied in terms of cautiousness and efficiency. After each trial, participants provided feedback to adjust the AV’s driving style toward their preferences, which was successfully implemented in 80% cases. Drivers’ trust, workload, voluntary takeover decisions, eye movements, and skin conductance were measured. Overall, participants preferred driving styles balancing cautiousness and efficiency. When AV behavior matched driver preferences, they reported higher trust and more stable visual scanning patterns, while unexpected behaviors were associated with broader ocular scanning. Findings can inform the development of adaptive systems that intelligently modify AV behaviors.

Automated vehicles drive safer but induce riskier behavior in human drivers in car-following scenarios

Yueying Chu; Ying Gao; Zhigang Xu; Peng Liu Communications Engineering, 2026 https://doi.org/10.1038/s44172-026-00793-3

To enhance traffic safety, automated vehicles (AVs) are usually programmed to operate more smoothly and follow traffic rules better. Whether these operational characteristics achieve their intended safety benefits, however, also depends on how non-human-like AVs influence nearby human drivers. Using three real-world datasets of Lyft and Waymo driverless AVs and adaptive cruise control-driven vehicles, we assess their safety impacts in car-following scenarios. Unlike previous studies, we align car-following events by similarities in lead-vehicle speed profiles and conduct quasi-experiments. Lyft AVs exhibit smoother and safer car-following, with longer time-headways and higher time-to-collision than human drivers when following aligned manual vehicles. Paradoxically, human drivers behave more riskily, with shorter time-headways and smaller time-to-collision when following aligned Lyft AVs versus manual vehicles, partly due to AV leaders’ greater stability. Similar changes appear in the other two datasets. Our work provides an in-depth understanding of how AVs influence traffic safety. Yueying Chu, Ying Gao and colleagues analyze three real-world datasets of automated vehicles using a quasi-experimental design that aligns lead-vehicle speed profiles in car-following scenarios. They found that automated vehicles drive more smoothly and safely but paradoxically induce riskier car-following behavior in human followers.

ARAM: a threshold model for understanding occupant acceptance of architectural robot adaptations

Alex Binh Vinh Duc Nguyen; Rania Christoforou; Ilaria Pigliautile; Verônica Martins Gnecco; Anja Pogladič; Sara Arko; … Frontiers in Computer Science, 2026, Vol. 8 https://doi.org/10.3389/fcomp.2026.1896307

Physical interior elements are increasingly becoming roboticised to support occupant needs. Partitions, ceilings, and furniture can now physically and autonomously change shape or move to architecturally “adapt” indoor spaces, with the aim of improving occupant comfort, satisfaction, and wellbeing. However, occupants sometimes reject these adaptations when they are perceived as disruptive, unpredictable, or difficult to control. Motivated by the goal of making architectural robots more acceptable, we involved an interdisciplinary team of experts in human-building interaction, human-robot interaction, psychology, anthropology, and human comfort to qualitatively re-analyze how occupants accepted adaptations across three previous studies on robotic partitions. We found that an occupant tended to accept an adaptation when they recognized a personal need that the architectural robot was capable of addressing in a socially justifiable way. Accordingly, we developed the Architectural Robot Acceptance Model (ARAM), in which three qualitative thresholds along a continuum of perceived stress severity define four distinct acceptance responses to a specific adaptation. As the positions of these thresholds may vary across occupants and situations, ARAM supports testable estimates of how an occupant may respond to different appraisal states of personal need, adaptation capability, and social justification. Because architectural robot adaptations may simultaneously be experienced as robotic behaviors, building automation, and socially situated environmental adjustments, ARAM is particularly relevant to individual adaptations that enter occupants' spatial experience and may affect co-located others. We then discuss how the model can inform situated estimates of occupant acceptance of architectural robot adaptations, and outline how its broader relevance to other robotic, automated, intelligent, and smart technologies embedded in the built environment may be evaluated in future work.

Transformation of the teaching role through educational automation and intelligent technologies: a systematic review

Danny Santiago Delgado Togra; Grethy Quezada-Lozano Frontiers in Education, 2026, Vol. 11 https://doi.org/10.3389/feduc.2026.1876239

Introduction Educational automation is increasingly used in teaching, but its implications for teachers' tasks, responsibilities, and professional agency remain insufficiently synthesised across educational levels. This review examined how automated and intelligent technologies are transforming the teaching role. Methods Empirical studies indexed in Scopus and Web of Science from 2020 to 2024 were reviewed following PRISMA 2020. Eligibility was structured using PICO, and methodological quality was appraised with the 2018 Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT). Results Fifty-eight studies met the eligibility and quality threshold: 41 quantitative, eight qualitative, and nine mixed-methods studies. Three domains emerged: teachers' adoption perspectives and constraints; technology-mediated models that redistribute teaching work; and educational outcomes conditioned by teacher competence, institutional support, and governance. Twenty-four studies met five MMAT criteria, 20 met four, and 14 met three. Sensitivity analysis retained the three domains but reduced confidence in claims about performance, motivation, and inclusion. Discussion Educational automation primarily redistributes teaching tasks rather than replacing teachers. Its educational value depends on teacher competence and agency, institutional support, and governance.

Psychometric applications of generative artificial intelligence: Lifecycle, risks, and research agenda

David Villarreal‐Zegarra; Yscenia Paredes-Gonzales; Jackeline García-Serna PLOS mental health., 2026, Vol. 3, Issue 9, pp. e0000702 https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pmen.0000702

Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI), including large language models and large multimodal models, is increasingly used to support psychological assessment and digital mental health measurement. This review proposes a lifecycle framework for evaluating these uses without weakening psychometric standards. The framework covers construct definition; item, prompt, indicator, or signal generation; evaluation of content, response processes, usability, and data quality; piloting and calibration; validation; fairness and measurement invariance; scoring and interpretation; documentation; and post-deployment monitoring. We argue that digital traces from smartphones, chatbots, ecological momentary assessment, wearables, social media, clinical notes, and multimodal systems should not be treated as psychometric measures by default. They should remain raw data, candidate indicators, or algorithmic scores until their construct interpretation and intended use are theoretically specified, technically verified, empirically calibrated, and validated with human data. GenAI may help generate candidate items, refine wording, classify open-text responses, extract structured information, support multimodal integration, and assist scoring under explicit rules. These uses may improve efficiency and scale, but they do not establish validity, objectivity, fairness, or clinical meaning. We distinguish two complementary facets: GenAI for psychometrics, in which models support measurement development and scoring, and psychometrics for GenAI, in which psychometric methods evaluate model behavior when LLMs are part of measurement workflows. Key risks include construct drift, face validity without structural validity, compressed variability in synthetic respondents, algorithmic bias, lack of invariance, prompt sensitivity, model drift, automation bias, data-security and privacy failures, and loss of subjectivity and disagreement. Responsible use requires human oversight, transparent reporting, validation with human data, fairness evaluation, secure data governance, and continuous monitoring. GenAI should augment, not replace, psychometric science.
