Problem-solving skills are essential to develop in early childhood so that children can identify problems, consider alternatives, and determine solutions independently. However, teacher-centered learning may limit children's opportunities to explore and experiment with different problem-solving strategies. This study aims to describe the implementation of the Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) approach using loose parts materials and the development of early childhood problem-solving skills. A qualitative descriptive method was employed at RA Nurhayati, Medan Tembung, involving teachers and 30 children aged 5–6 years. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, with credibility supported by triangulation of techniques and sources. The findings indicate that constructing a bridge for toy cars provided opportunities for children to identify problems, select materials, design solutions, test alternatives, revise constructions, and evaluate outcomes. Children also engaged in experimentation, communication, collaboration, and creative material use. These findings suggest that the STEAM approach using loose parts can support the development of early childhood problem-solving skills through active, contextual, and child-centered learning experiences.
The purpose of this study is to determine pre-service early childhood teachers’ views and perceived competency levels regarding neurolinguistic-based science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) applications in phonemic skills instruction, and to examine whether these perceptions differ significantly according to demographic (gender, age, and grade level) and professional/experiential (having received phonemic awareness training, STEAM experience, and familiarity with the concept of neurolinguistic programming [NLP]) variables. Adopting a descriptive survey design, one of the quantitative research methods, the study group consisted of 179 pre-service teachers enrolled in an early childhood education undergraduate program at one university in Kazakhstan. The research data were collected through a demographic information form, a structured views questionnaire, and a data collection tool measuring pre-service teachers’ perceived competency. The findings show that participants’ overall perceived competency was high. However, 36.9% of participants regarded phonemic awareness as a naturally developing process and 31.3% viewed STEAM as unrelated to language skills, which may indicate conceptual gaps; and although 41.9% stated that the art component made phoneme discrimination more concrete, 53.6% considered art either unrelated to phonemic awareness or merely entertaining. Perceived competency did not differ significantly by gender or age, whereas third-year pre-service teachers reported lower perceived competency than first- and second-year students; a “reality shock” after practicum is a possible but untested explanation, as practicum was not measured. In addition, pre-service teachers who had previously received phonemic awareness training, who had STEAM experience, and who were familiar with the concept of NLP reported significantly higher perceived competency. The findings suggest that teacher educators may consider adding applied, STEAM-integrated phonemic awareness modules supported by microteaching, including a critical examination of the evidence on NLP and learning-styles claims. The findings are limited by self-report data and a single-university convenience sample.
Twenty First Century Skills (21st CS) are considered to be a pathway of STEM/STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) Education, yet there is limited evidence at a large scale of the implementation of STEM/STEAM pedagogy in secondary schools of Pakistan. The research sought to understand the self-reported classroom practices of secondary school teachers across nine domains of pedagogical and infrastructural practices associated with STEM/STEAM learning, and to examine the differences in practices by teachers from different localities and males and females. The design of the study was descriptive, cross-sectional survey. The respondents comprised 1,099 STEM/STEAM engaged secondary teachers from all seven administrative provinces/territories of Pakistan who filled an 8-item Yes/No Resource Availability index along with a structured 51 item questionnaire on a 5-point Likert scale, which measured 8 practice constructs: Project- and Problem-Based Learning, Hands-On and Model-Making Practices, Inquiry-Based Learning, Use of Digital Tools and Technology, Arts Integration, Collaborative Learning, Problem-Solving and Design Thinking, and STEM/STEAM Competitions and Achievement Exposure. The instrument was expert validated and showed great internal consistency (α overall was .905). Results: Teachers indicated that they were implementing Project/Problem Based Learning (PBL) at a high level (M = 3.57), Competitions and Achievement Exposure at a high level (M = 3.48), and Arts Integration at a moderate level (M = 3.42), while they were implementing Collaborative Learning at a moderate level (M = 3.39), Problem Solving and Design Thinking at a moderate level (M = 3.34), and Inquiry Based Learning at a moderate level (M = 3.32), and Hands On/Model Making at a comparatively low level (M = 3.05). In general, 49.5% of cases, material and infrastructural resources were available. There was no significant difference between the availability of resources available to teachers by gender, but there was a significant difference by urban and rural (χ² = 22.449, p < .001), with teachers from urban schools saying they had less available in their classroom than teachers from rural schools, possibly because of the overcrowding of urban schools, rather than the fact that rural school resources are superior. Conclusion: relatively high levels of engagement with teacher-directed/low material cost practices and practices depending on sustained student autonomy or on physical materials or infrastructure or on the digital are relatively limited, with the exception of practices that rely on physical materials and infrastructure. Implications: The results justify investing more in infrastructure and professional development in hands-on, inquiry, and technologically focused practice and in the reallocation of resources based on per-capita classroom load instead of on an urban/rural administrative classification.

The growing use of digital technologies in mathematics education highlights the need to develop students’ digital literacy alongside their mathematical knowledge and problem-solving skills. In Presidential Schools in Uzbekistan, Cambridge International A Level Mathematics courses emphasize mathematical reasoning and the presentation of worked solutions, whereas digital examinations such as the Digital SAT require students to interact effectively with digital testing environments and technological tools. This difference creates an opportunity to integrate digital technologies more systematically into A Level mathematics teaching. This study aims to examine the potential of selected digital learning platforms, including College Board resources, Save My Exams, and Desmos, and to propose a STEAM-based framework for their integration into A Level Mathematics lessons. The comparative analysis focuses on curriculum alignment, opportunities for independent practice, mathematical visualization, feedback, and the development of digital problem-solving skills. The proposed framework seeks to connect conceptual mathematical understanding with purposeful technology use while preserving the emphasis on rigorous mathematical reasoning and worked solutions. The study offers practical recommendations for integrating digital resources into mathematics education and identifies directions for further empirical investigation of their contribution to students’ digital literacy.
STEAM education in early childhood settings requires not only teaching and learning resources but also organizational conditions that support their use in educational practice. This study examined resource provision and the broader organizational context associated with STEAM implementation in Lithuanian early childhood education institutions using a sequential mixed-methods design. The quantitative component drew on national survey data from 831 institutions and examined teaching and learning resource provision. The subsequent qualitative component involved open-ended responses from 38 educational leaders from institutions included in the quantitative dataset and explored their perspectives on resources, professional learning, collaboration, leadership practices, and barriers associated with STEAM implementation. The quantitative findings revealed variation in resource provision levels across curriculum areas and resource types. Within “Exploring and Understanding the Environment,” several resources showed provision levels above 70%, whereas the provision level for specialized STEAM laboratory kits was 30.01%. Qualitative findings showed that material resources and digital technologies were the most frequently identified resource subcategory ( n = 27), followed by teachers’ STEAM competencies ( n = 23). Leaders also identified learning environments, professional learning, collaboration, leadership practices, partnerships, and organizational conditions. Material barriers were prominent, particularly limited specialized STEAM resources and digital technologies ( n = 17) and lack of dedicated STEAM learning spaces and laboratory equipment ( n = 15), alongside pedagogical, organizational, and financial barriers. Integration of the findings indicates that material provision is an important but not isolated dimension of STEAM implementation. The qualitative findings situate national patterns of resource provision within a broader organizational context involving professional capacities, leadership practices, collaboration, learning environments, and institutional conditions. A data-informed conceptual framework synthesizes these dimensions without implying causal or hierarchical relationships. The findings suggest that efforts to support STEAM implementation may benefit from addressing material provision and broader organizational conditions in combination.

Purpose of the study: This study explores the impact of incorporating the interdisciplinary STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) framework into innovative pedagogical models on primary students' academic achievements in science and their practical Science Process Skills (SPS). Methodology: This study used a quantitative approach with a 2x2 quasi-experimental factorial design. Two intact classes were selected via cluster random sampling as the experimental group (STEAM-oriented) and control group (conventional). Main Findings: The STEAM approach significantly improved students' cognitive outcomes and 21st-century skills compared to traditional methods. Reflective students scored higher due to deep analytical traits, but the STEAM model also drove substantial gains for impulsive students. Novelty/Originality of this study: This study bridges the gap between multidisciplinary STEAM frameworks and psychological profiles. Its primary novelty lies in demonstrating how a konstruktivistik STEAM design can accommodate and mitigate the limitations of diverse internal cognitive styles (reflective vs. impulsive) in elementary science education
This paper presents an innovative interdisciplinary teaching model based on the integration of acoustic phonetics into STEAM education (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics). This study is based on the premise that the interdisciplinary nature of acoustic phonetics, connecting language with physics, mathematics, and digital technologies, provides a suitable basis for designing STEAM-oriented educational activities that engage students in scientific inquiry, acoustic measurement, data analysis and programming. The paper presents a pilot classroom implementation in English language instruction in which students used Praat-based acoustic analysis together with a Python-based supervised machine-learning classifier to investigate whether speakers could be differentiated on the basis of measurable acoustic characteristics. The computational component employed a Random Forest classifier based on selected acoustic features, while supplementary manual analysis of the F3–F2 distance was used to examine/r/ realizations in cases of acoustic overlap. The classroom implementation involved 30 seventh-grade students, while the acoustic speaker dataset consisted of recordings from six students selected for the speaker-differentiation component of the project. A special section of the paper is devoted to the development of educational projects combining phonetic analysis, physical models of the vocal tract, and artificial intelligence algorithms, with the aim of bringing the scientific method closer to students and enabling active learning through research. The paper demonstrates that phonetic research can serve not only as a component of language teaching but also as a powerful instrument of interdisciplinary education. The conclusion emphasizes that phonetics represents an authentic STEAM discipline in miniature and that its systematic implementation in teaching contributes to the development of functional knowledge, an investigative mindset, and students' digital competencies.
The United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4) position creativity as a critical competency in 21st -century STEAM education, highlighting the urgency of cultivating students’ capacity to navigate complex transdisciplinary challenges. Although problem-based learning (PBL) has become a prevalent instructional approach, empirical evidence regarding its specific efficacy for fostering creative thinking remains inconclusive. This systematic review and meta-analysis investigated whether PBL is associated with improved creativity outcomes among undergraduate STEAM students, with particular relevance to international education contexts. Following PRISMA guidelines, fifteen peer-reviewed articles (2015–2025) were included, with six providing sufficient data for meta-analysis (k = 6). The pooled effect size (Hedges’ g = 1.64, 95% CI: 0.96–2.32) suggests a positive association between PBL and creativity outcomes compared to traditional instruction. However, given the small study count and substantial heterogeneity (I² = 88.5%), these results should be interpreted as preliminary and exploratory. Assessment priorities diverge across disciplinary contexts, with arts and humanities foregrounding aesthetic originality and self-expression, while science and engineering fields emphasise solution feasibility and collaborative problem-solving. Pure PBL and its variants demonstrate relevance for creative skill development, though subgroup comparisons remain descriptive due to limited study numbers. Notably, the included studies employed diverse, non-standardized creativity instruments across different disciplines, which significantly limits comparability and generalizability. These findings offer preliminary empirical insights for educators, and curriculum designers, yet the high heterogeneity and measurement variability underscore the need for future research with validated standardized assessments.
