Tinatin Iosebidze; Laura Eliauri; Salome Omiadze; Tekla Rtveladze ГРААЛЬ НАУКИ, 2026, Issue 78, pp. 222-227 https://doi.org/10.36074/grail-of-science.30.10.2026.024

Background: Examinations can trigger stress related to performance expectations, uncertainty, and the consequences of receiving a particular grade. Stress may be especially salient for students seeking the highest grade and for students who need a minimum passing grade to complete a course. Objective: To outline a comparative investigation of pre-examination stress among students at Gori State University and European University, with particular attention to students aiming for an A (91–100 points) and students for whom an E-range result (51–60 points) may be sufficient to complete the subject. Methods: The proposed cross-sectional study includes 50 students, 25 from each university. A brief questionnaire should record perceived stress before the examination, grade-related expectations, perceived consequences of the result, and basic demographic/academic variables. Results: The numerical example in this draft is illustrative only and does not represent verified participant data. It demonstrates a reporting structure in which stress scores are compared by university and by grade-related concern. Conclusion: Grade-related expectations and fear of failing may represent different pathways to examination stress. Actual conclusions require analysis of the completed dataset.

Stigmatisation can undermine participation, belonging and well-being in higher education. This study examined how students represent stigmatisation and connect it to diversity, inclusion and perceived institutional responsibility. Grounded in social representations theory, it used a cross-sectional qualitative textual design. A non-probabilistic snowball sample of 519 students from one Spanish university completed an online free-association task based on the Grid Elaboration Method, providing four words and brief explanations in response to “stigmatisation”. Spanish-language responses were analysed in IRaMuTeQ using similarity analysis and descending hierarchical cluster analysis (Reinert method). Seven classes formed two broader branches. The first constructed stigmatisation as categorisation and discrimination affecting LGBTQ+ people, migrants, and people with mental health conditions or functional diversity, with perceived consequences including emotional suffering and academic harm. The second connected stigmatisation to unmet support needs, rigid assessment practices and insufficient institutional responsiveness. By mapping spontaneous associations across multiple forms of difference, the study shows how social marking, psychosocial and educational consequences, and perceived institutional responsibility are organised within a shared representational field. The findings suggest that responses to stigmatisation may benefit from combining awareness-raising with attention to support provision, pedagogical and assessment practices, staff preparation, and communication about inclusion initiatives.

Although khat chewing is common among university students in Yemen, evidence on dose–response relationships between khat chewing frequency and sleep duration, perceived effects, and academic performance remains limited. This study examined these associations among medical students at Thamar University, Yemen. A cross-sectional study was conducted among undergraduate medical students. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire. Khat chewing frequency was categorized as non-use, 1–2 days/week, 3–4 days/week, and 5–7 days/week. Multivariable logistic and linear regression analyses were performed to assess associations, and ordinal trend analyses were used to evaluate dose–response relationships. Adjusted odds ratios (AOR) and regression coefficients (β) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were reported. Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. Increasing khat chewing frequency was independently associated with higher odds of short sleep duration (< 6 h). Compared with non-chewers, the adjusted odds of short sleep increased progressively, reaching an AOR of 7.83 (95% CI: 3.70–16.57; P < 0.001) among daily chewers.A significant linear dose–response relationship was also observed (AOR = 1.97, 95% CI: 1.54–2.52; P < 0.001). Perceived-effects scores increased progressively with khat-chewing frequency, with adjusted mean differences of 3.36, 3.73, and 4.94 for 1–2, 3–4, and 5–7 days/week, respectively (all P ≤ 0.001), with a significant linear trend (adjusted β = 1.61, 95% CI: 1.29–1.92; P < 0.001). In contrast, academic performance showed no significant association or linear dose–response relationship with khat chewing (adjusted β = 0.22, 95% CI: −0.46–0.89; P = 0.532). Khat chewing frequency showed clear dose–response associations with short sleep duration and perceived effects among medical students. However, these associations did not translate into measurable differences in academic performance. These findings suggest that the effects of frequent khat use are more evident in sleep and perceived behavioural outcomes than in academic achievement. These findings are consistent with known stimulant-related effects and may extend to similar student populations in comparable settings.

Medical and dental care experiences among transgender people: a consensual qualitative study

2026, Vol. 50, Issue 3, pp. 116-126 https://doi.org/10.11149/jkaoh.2026.50.3.116

Objectives: Transgender individuals, as social minorities, often face healthcare disparities and discrimination that negatively affect their health. This consensual qualitative study aimed to identify and categorize transgender people's gender identity-related experiences in medical and dental care, including perceived changes in staff attitudes, healthcare encounters, coping strategies, and perceived consequences for healthcare seeking, to advance the understanding of transgender healthcare utilization. Methods: Ten transgender adults in South Korea (six women and four men) were recruited using snowball sampling and participated in semi-structured in-depth interviews. The research team analyzed the data using a consensual qualitative research (CQR) methodology to enhance analytic credibility and reduce individual researcher bias. Results: The interview data were organized into six domains and 12 categories, with negative interactions emerging as a universal phenomenon. All participants reported negative experiences, including misgendering, derogatory remarks, and administrative systems centered on legal sex designations. These transphobic experiences were perceived to adversely affect oral and general health by prompting avoidance of healthcare visits.Consequently, such encounters were a key factor in decisions to delay future treatment or seek care exclusively from LGBT-friendly providers. Conclusions: The participants' accounts suggest that transphobic experiences in South Korean healthcare settings may arise from structural, interpersonal, and individual factors. This study provides exploratory evidence that well-intentioned behaviors may be perceived as microaggressions.Non-response to discrimination may function as an adaptive response to perceived systemic barriers. These findings suggest that negative healthcare experiences may contribute to healthcare avoidance and perceived adverse health and well-being consequences, highlighting the need for multidimensional interventions.
