The Role of Childhood Traumatic Experiences in Cognitive Flexibility During Early Adulthood

Tsania Nadhira; Satwika Rahapsari; Kwartarini Wahyu Yuniarti Gadjah Mada Journal of Psychology (GamaJoP), 2026, Vol. 12, Issue 2, pp. 162 https://doi.org/10.22146/gamajop.105406

Cognitive flexibility enables individuals to navigate unpredictable situations and rapid changes. Because the prefrontal cortex governs both cognitive flexibility and emotional input, lifetime traumatic experiences may influence its development. Despite this, research examining the impact of childhood trauma on cognitive flexibility in early adulthood remains limited. This study investigates the relationship using a sequential explanatory approach. A total of 275 undergraduate and diploma students (ages 18–25) from Gadjah Mada University completed the Adverse Childhood Experiences-International Questionnaire (ACE-IQ) and the Cognitive Flexibility Scale (CFS). Simple linear regression and thematic analysis indicated that childhood trauma predicts cognitive flexibility in early adulthood. These findings highlight the importance of understanding the long-term impact of childhood trauma on cognitive adaptability, which may inform interventions to enhance resilience in early adulthood. Future research should consider developmental timing, sociocultural environment, education, socioeconomic status, and spirituality, as well as experimental performance measures.

Independent predictors of non-suicidal self-injury among adolescents: a logistic regression model development study based on coping styles

Qiuyu Yuan; Chenlu Yao; Changping Zhai; Xiaoqin Zhou Frontiers in Psychology, 2026, Vol. 17, pp. 1930200 https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2026.1930200

Objective Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is an urgent and substantial public health concern among adolescents. This study is aimed at identifying the independent psychological predictors of NSSI and developing and validating a logistic regression-based risk discrimination model focused on coping styles. Methods A cross-sectional study involving 206 adolescents (104 with NSSI and 102 healthy controls) was conducted. All the participants provided general demographic data, and completed the Experiences in Close Relationships Inventory (ECR), the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire-Short Form Version (CTQ-SF), and the Coping Styles Questionnaire (CSQ). Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to identify the independent predictors of NSSI. A nomogram was constructed in accordance with the final multivariate model. Model performance was evaluated using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves, calibration plots, the Hosmer-Lemeshow (HL) test, and a decision curve analysis (DCA). Results Multivariate logistic regression revealed that a higher level of self-blame (OR = 1.062; 95% CI: 1.023–1.102; P = 0.002) was an independent risk factor, whereas a better problem-solving capacity (OR = 0.911; 95% CI: 0.867–0.957; P < 0.001) was an independent protective factor for adolescents with NSSI. Attachment dimensions and childhood trauma did not retain independent significance after adjustment. The nomogram showed excellent discrimination (AUC = 0.951, 95% CI: 0.922–0.980), good calibration (HL test P > 0.05), and superior clinical net benefit across a wide threshold (0.01–0.99). Conclusion Targeting self-blame and enhancing problem-solving skills may be effective styles for the prevention of adolescent NSSI. As a preliminary finding, the nomogram developed in our study is a useful tool for exploratory differentiation.

Psychometric properties of the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire–Short Form (CTQ-SF) in adolescents from the Peruvian Amazon

Marita Mily Paz-Vilchez; Yosmeli Moreno-Acosta; Julio Cjuno; Jhordan Jhonny Mayta Llanos Frontiers in Psychology, 2026, Vol. 17 https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2026.1939936

Childhood trauma is a significant public health problem owing to its effects on the socioemotional development of adolescents, which calls for validated assessment instruments. This study aimed to adapt and examine the psychometric properties of the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire–Short Form (CTQ-SF) in adolescents from the Peruvian Amazon. An instrumental, cross-sectional study was conducted with 878 adolescents aged 12–17 years (M = 14.0; SD = 1.46) from public secondary schools in the San Martín Region, Peru, randomly divided into two subsamples of 439 participants each for exploratory (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA); reliability, convergent and discriminant validity, and measurement invariance across sex were also examined. The original five-factor model did not show adequate performance. After removing items with weak loadings or redundant content, a three-factor, 18-item structure emerged—lack of perceived family support/neglect, sexual abuse, and physical–emotional abuse—which showed adequate fit (CFI = 0.958; TLI = 0.951; RMSEA = 0.051; SRMR = 0.067) and satisfactory internal consistency (ordinal α and ω = 0.76–0.95). Convergent validity was adequate for sexual abuse and physical–emotional abuse (AVE = 0.81 and 0.50) and borderline for lack of perceived family support/neglect (AVE = 0.42), whereas discriminant validity was supported for all factor pairs (HTMT = 0.262–0.626). Full scalar invariance across sex was also established (ΔCFI ≤ 0.002; ΔRMSEA ≤ 0.003). These findings indicate that the Peruvian CTQ-SF is better represented by a three-factor correlated structure, yielding a brief version that allows comparisons between sexes; nevertheless, because its temporal stability and external validity remain to be examined, its use should currently be restricted to research and preliminary screening purposes.

Adverse childhood experiences are linked to pre-pregnancy stressful life events across generations

Huafei Yang; Zifan Zhang; Weijie Ding; Hui Wang; Yue Zhang; Yangyang Cheng; … Communications Medicine, 2026 https://doi.org/10.1038/s43856-026-01931-w

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) shape the lifecourse psychosocial well-being, yet evidence linking ACEs to pre-pregnancy stressful life events (pre-PSLEs) across generations remains limited. This study examined the associations between ACEs and pre-PSLEs across two generations of women and explored pathways of intergenerational stress transmission. A total of 2,235 mother-offspring pairs were obtained from the Grandmothers, Mothers, and Their Children’s Health study. Maternal and offspring ACEs were assessed using the Childhood Trauma Screener. Offspring pre-PSLEs included conflict with partners, conflict with family members, physical/sexual/emotional abuse, deaths of friends or relatives, and financial stress. We used multivariable logistic regression to examine associations between ACEs and pre-PSLEs, and structural equation modeling to explore mediation by offspring ACEs. Overall, 18.17% of mothers and 14.27% of offspring report ACEs; 29.49% of offspring report pre-PSLEs. Both maternal (OR = 1.79, 95% CI: 1.41–2.27) and offspring ACEs (OR = 2.23, 95% CI: 1.73–2.89) significantly increase the odds of offspring pre-PSLEs, showing dose–response relationships. These patterns persist across all ACE subtypes. Offspring ACEs mediate 79.64% of the association between maternal ACEs and offspring pre-PSLEs. ACEs are associated with pre-PSLEs both within and across generations, suggesting a pathway of stress transmission from early life into adulthood. These findings highlight the importance of early identification and intervention for ACEs within pre-pregnancy health management. Difficult childhood experiences, such as abuse or neglect, can affect health and wellbeing throughout life. We investigated whether these experiences, known as adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), are associated with stressful life events (SLEs) before pregnancy and whether a mother’s childhood adversity is linked to her daughter’s stress before pregnancy. We studied 2,235 mother–daughter pairs in China. Mothers and daughters reported their childhood experiences, and daughters also reported SLEs during the year before pregnancy. We found that both maternal and offspring ACEs were associated with greater pre-pregnancy stress. Most of the association between maternal ACEs and daughters’ pre-pregnancy stress was explained by daughters’ own ACEs. These findings highlight the importance of identifying and supporting women with childhood adversity before pregnancy to improve maternal and child health.

Childhood trauma and suicidal ideation in female prisoners: serial mediation via intolerance of uncertainty and emotional problems

Kunyan Wang; Jue Deng; Xianghui Lai; Ruo-Heng Wang; Xiao-Li Zhu Frontiers in Psychology, 2026, Vol. 17 https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2026.1935504

Introduction Given the high risk of suicide among female prisoners, investigating the internal risk factors and pathways associated with suicidal ideation holds substantial clinical and practical significance. Childhood trauma, a critical distal risk factor, is closely associated with suicidal behavior. However, the specific cognitive and affective mechanisms through which childhood trauma links to suicidal ideation remain underexplored. Drawing on Emotion Dysregulation Theory and related research, this study constructed a serial mediation model to explore the relationship between childhood trauma and suicidal ideation in female prisoners, as well as the mediating roles of intolerance of uncertainty and emotional problems. Methods A cross-sectional survey using standardized questionnaires was conducted with a sample of 1,086 female prisoners. Results The results indicated that childhood trauma showed a significant indirect association with suicidal ideation through intolerance of uncertainty and emotional problems. Specifically, emotional problems showed a significant independent mediating effect, and intolerance of uncertainty was involved in a significant serial mediation pathway linking childhood trauma to suicidal ideation. Furthermore, the direct paths from childhood trauma and intolerance of uncertainty to concurrent suicidal ideation were not statistically significant. Both variables were positively associated with emotional problems, which were associated with higher levels of suicidal ideation. Discussion This study delineates the cognitive-affective pathways through which early trauma is indirectly associated with suicidal ideation, providing empirical evidence for targeted suicide risk assessment and psychological interventions in correctional settings.

Trauma, the Fragmented Psyche, and the Cycle of Repetition in Narratives of Maya Angelou

Maya Angelou

Elli May Ella GPH-International Journal of Social Science and Humanities Research, 2026, Vol. 9, Issue 8 https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.23079766

Abstract This paper examines trauma as a psychological wound that can affect memory, identity, behaviour, relationships, and the individual's sense of safety. It focuses particularly on childhood trauma, maternal abandonment, dissociation, repression, traumatic memory, repetition, sexual violence, and the struggle to return to a sense of wholeness. Drawing on the ideas of Revital Goodman, Sigmund Freud, Susan L. Bloom, Cathy Caruth, George Hartman, Sándor Ferenczi, Jay B. Frankel, and Kali Tal, the paper considers how traumatic experiences can remain active long after the original event has ended. It argues that childhood trauma is especially significant because it can shape the developing sense of self and influence how individuals respond to later experiences. Maternal care is considered an important source of security, while parental failure and abandonment can leave the child vulnerable to further trauma. The paper also examines dissociation as a protective response to overwhelming experiences and explores how repressed memories may return through repetition, flashbacks, behaviour, and storytelling. The idea of a Sisyphean cycle is used to describe the repeated struggle of the trauma survivor to escape the past while continually returning to it. Particular attention is given to sexual violence and the experiences of women, especially African American women, whose psychological wounds may be intensified by racial and social oppression. The paper concludes that trauma may fragment the psyche, but remembering, narrating, and confronting painful experiences can also become part of the movement towards healing and psychological reintegration. Keywords: trauma, childhood trauma, maternal abandonment, dissociation, fragmented psyche, memory, repression, repetition, sexual violence, African American women, healing

Building Resilience: Evaluating the Impact of Trauma-Informed Instruction Interventions on Preservice Teachers’ Efficacy in Classroom Management and Student Engagement

Benjamin N. Lathrop; Ofelia Castro Schepers The New Educator, 2026, pp. 1-23 https://doi.org/10.1080/1547688x.2026.2726185

Many teachers feel unprepared to meet the challenges childhood trauma presents in classrooms. Using a convergent parallel design, we explored the results of several interventions designed to help preservice teachers (PSTs) understand and apply trauma-informed instruction principles and strategies during student teaching. Qualitative findings included a growth in confidence for PSTs who participated in the interventions. Using the Teacher Sense of Efficacy Scale, quantitative results showed a modest change in efficacy in classroom management and student engagement. Although some participants attributed this change to the interventions, the relationship between their growth and the interventions is inconclusive, suggesting a need for large-scale mixed-methods studies that employ random sampling.

Lucinda Grummitt; Sasha Bailey; Kirsty Rowlinson; Isobel Ivison; Louise Birrell; An Nguyen; … Journal of Applied Developmental Psychology, 2026, Vol. 107, pp. 102009 https://doi.org/10.1016/j.appdev.2026.102009

Objectives This study examined whether school belonging moderates associations between childhood trauma and internalising and externalising mental health symptoms among Australian adolescents. Methods Data came from baseline of a school-based prevention program trial in 9 Australian schools. Participants were 750 students (Mage = 13.8 years; 60.4% male; 36.9% female; 91.3% Australian-born). In 2023, students completed self-report measures of lifetime trauma, school belonging, anxiety and depressive symptoms, conduct problems, and hyperactivity. Linear mixed-effects models tested interactions between trauma and school belonging, adjusting for school clustering, age, and gender. Results Trauma exposure and greater number of traumatic events were associated with lower school belonging and higher symptoms across all domains. School belonging moderated associations between trauma and depression and anxiety, and between number of traumatic events and depression, anxiety, and conduct problems, but not hyperactivity. Conclusion Higher school belonging buffered symptoms of depression, anxiety, and conduct problems, underscoring the importance of school environments.

Anxiety as a Mediator Between Childhood Trauma and Social Competence Among Adolescents and Young Adults

Khadija Fatima; Sadia Niazi; Anam Yousaf; Saba Ghayas; Anam Khan Journal of korean Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, 2026, Vol. 37, Issue 4, pp. 177-185 https://doi.org/10.5765/jkacap.260013

Objectives: This study aimed to examine anxiety as a statistical mediator of the association between childhood trauma and social competence among adolescents and young adults. It also aimed to examine whether the proposed model varies across adolescents and young adults. Methods:The study sample consisted of 300 participants, including adolescents (n=150) and young adults (n=150).Participants were recruited through purposive sampling from educational institutions and community settings in the Sargodha District. The age range of the patients was limited to 15-30 years.A cross-sectional survey design was employed. The translated versions of the Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale, Childhood Trauma Questionnaire, and Social Competence Scale were used to assess anxiety, childhood trauma, and social competence, respectively.Maximum likelihood estimation in IBM SPSS Amos was used to test the proposed statistical mediation model. Results:The results indicated that childhood trauma was positively associated with anxiety and negatively associated with social competence among adolescents and young adults.Anxiety statistically mediated the association between childhood trauma and social competence, suggesting a significant but small indirect association rather than a causal pathway.Given the cross-sectional design, the findings should be interpreted as associations and not as evidence of temporal or causal relationships.Exploratory multigroup analyses suggested that structural associations may differ across age groups, with comparatively stronger associations observed among adolescents. However, because formal measurement invariance has not been established, these between-group differences should be interpreted with caution. Conclusion:The results highlight the importance of the early identification of trauma-related anxiety and the need for school-, university-, and community-based interventions that strengthen emotional regulation, coping skills, and social competence.
