ABSTRACT The Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) program provides learning experiences that require students to adapt, learn from experience, and develop innovative ideas. Individual differences in personality may be associated with variations in these abilities, making further investigation of personality dimensions necessary. This study aimed to analyze the role of the five Big Five personality dimensions in predicting learning agility and innovative behavior among MBKM participants. A quantitative approach with a cross-sectional correlational design was employed, involving 303 students who were currently participating in or had previously participated in MBKM activities. Participants were selected using a non-probability sampling technique. Data were collected through self-report questionnaires and analyzed using Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) and multivariate regression with Mplus 8.4. The results indicated that openness to experience was the strongest positive predictor of innovative behavior (β = 0.422; p < 0.001) and learning agility (β = 0.361; p < 0.001). Conscientiousness and extraversion were also positively associated with both outcomes. In contrast, agreeableness was negatively associated with innovative behavior (β = −0.116; p = 0.016) but was not significantly associated with learning agility. Neuroticism showed no significant association with either outcome. These findings highlight the relevance of personality characteristics in understanding variations in student competencies and support the development of adaptive MBKM mentoring programs without using personality profiles as the sole basis for student selection.
Background Simulated interviews could provide behavioral information for young-adult mental-health research, including studies of social-evaluative anxiety. Their value depends on reliable observer impressions and interpretable links to participants’ self-reports. We examined personality expression, affective communication, self-observer correspondence, and competence impressions in emerging adults. Methods Two video-interview protocols were administered to participants aged 18–23 years: an occupationally framed protocol ( n = 55 ) and a broader personality-oriented protocol ( n = 33 ); 30 participants completed both. The protocols covered parallel HEXACO-related domains but differed in both framing and question content. Participants completed HEXACO self-reports and selected one of five valence-arousal categories after each response. Four observers rated personality expression, affective communication, and competence. We distinguished focused domain-matched tests from secondary question-level tests and exploratory correlation matrices, reported 95% confidence intervals, used permutation tests, and controlled the false-discovery rate within analysis families. Results Self-reported HEXACO scores were similar across protocols except for lower Agreeableness in the broader protocol (mean difference = − 0.23 , 95% CI [ − 0.35 , − 0.12 ] , q = 0.004 ). Global valence was more positive in the broader protocol (mean difference = 0.30 , 95% CI [ 0.15 , 0.45 ] , q < 0.001 ), whereas the arousal difference was uncertain. Reliability was heterogeneous: personality and competence ICCs ranged from 0.27 to 0.65 and 0.35 to 0.64 in the occupational protocol and from 0.33 to 0.58 and 0.22 to 0.73 in the broader protocol. Question-level affect ICCs were approximately 0.00 to 0.60 and − 0.91 to 0.03, respectively. Occupational self-observer correlations for Extraversion and Agreeableness survived correction; no broader-protocol personality correlation did. Strong same-observer personality-competence associations survived correction in both protocols, but broader-protocol affect-competence associations did not. Conclusions Affective reports differed between protocols, but question content also differed, precluding a pure context effect. Observer-rating reliability and self-observer correspondence identify conditions for future mental-health studies pairing simulated interviews with validated symptom and functioning measures.
Understanding how individuals evaluate social content in affective scenes is crucial for research in emotion, social cognition, and decision-making. However, standardized image databases often lack fine-grained ratings of social dimensions beyond basic emotional content. We present a normative dataset of 296 affective scenes rated by 424 adult participants across six social-affective dimensions: social relevance, emotion sharing, action sharing, interpersonal equality, scene pleasantness, and participatory arousal. Each image was independently coded for objective features such as number of people, face visibility, and gaze direction. All rating dimensions showed excellent interrater reliability. Pleasantness ratings demonstrated strong convergent validity with established valence norms from the International Affective Picture System (IAPS), while arousal ratings differentiated between experienced and participatory arousal, suggesting that the latter captures a distinct affective component. Correlation analyses revealed that social relevance was strongly associated with scene pleasantness and a composite “engagement” factor combining emotion sharing, action sharing, and equality. Notably, the association between pleasantness and social relevance was especially pronounced in scenes depicting single individuals. Linear mixed models further indicated that extraversion showed a tentative positive association with the engagement–social relevance relationship, which did not survive correction for multiple comparisons and requires replication. Other personality traits and empathy did not significantly moderate these relationships. This open-access dataset provides a reliable, multidimensional tool for selecting affective scenes based on both emotional and social-interpersonal features. It supports improved stimulus control and design in a wide range of behavioral and neurocognitive research. By systematically mapping social meaning in static affective scenes, our study advances existing methodological resources and offers empirical insight into the structure of social-affective appraisals. All image codes, mean ratings, and analysis scripts are publicly available via the Open Science Framework.
Empirical evidence indicates that societal crises and adverse conditions can negatively impact population mental health. The Big Five personality traits – neuroticism, extraversion, openness, agreeableness, and conscientiousness –significantly influence stress responses. In this article, we examine how personality traits were associated with mental distress during and in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. Based on data from the Understanding America Study, we find that, since the pandemic began, individuals with high levels of neuroticism were more likely to experience mental distress. By contrast, the remaining personality traits exhibited weaker, inconsistent, or statistically insignificant associations with mental health trajectories. Further analyses indicate that the heightened vulnerability among individuals high in neuroticism was accompanied by elevated risk perceptions, differential adoption of protective behaviors, and less adaptive coping patterns. Taken together, these findings suggest that personality-linked differences, particularly driven by the level of neuroticism, help explain heterogeneity in mental health responses to large-scale societal stressors. Our findings point to the relevance of personality traits (particularly neuroticism) for identifying individuals who may benefit from targeted mental health support during future crises.
This study examines whether Big Five personality traits are associated with grit among Ghanaian teacher trainees, applying regularisation assisted econometric estimation within a double machine learning framework. Using survey data from 288 students at Jasikan College of Education, three complementary post lasso estimators were applied, namely ordinary least squares with CHS lasso orthogonalised variables, CHS post lasso orthogonalised variables, and PDS selected variables alongside the full regressor set, each employing lasso purely for covariate selection and orthogonalisation within an OLS framework. A cross validated predictive lasso model corroborated these estimates. Across specifications, openness and conscientiousness consistently predicted higher grit, with openness exceeding conscientiousness in effect size, while extraversion, agreeableness and neuroticism showed no significant association. These specific findings suggest that personality dimensions relevant to grit may depend on resource constrained teacher training conditions, offering targets for interventions strengthening grit among prospective educators in Ghana.
OBJECTIVE: The present study used the Pairfam longitudinal dataset to examine the effects of Big Five and Dark Triad personality traits on the probability of being single. METHOD: Generalized linear mixed models with a within-between decomposition distinguished stable individual differences (between-person component) from wave-to-wave fluctuations (within-person component). RESULTS: For the Big Five, higher between-person Openness was associated with greater odds of being single, particularly for women, while higher between-person Conscientiousness, Extraversion, and Agreeableness were each associated with lower odds, with the Extraversion effect more pronounced for men. Higher mean Neuroticism was associated with greater odds of being single for men but not for women. For the Dark Triad, higher between-person Machiavellianism was associated with lower odds of being single, while Psychopathy and Narcissistic Admiration were associated with higher odds, the latter particularly for women. Narcissistic Rivalry was a risk factor concentrated among men. Within-person fixed effects were largely non-significant, consistent with the rank-order stability of personality, but significant random slopes indicated substantial heterogeneity across individuals. CONCLUSIONS: The findings indicate that personality predicts singlehood primarily through stable dispositional channels, with selective and heterogeneous contributions from within-person dynamics.
Background The Big Five Personality (BFP) model is an established dimensional framework, whereas the Quantum-8-Personality (Q8P) model is an emerging culturally grounded framework derived from Chinese philosophical traditions. This study explored dimension-level relationships between the two frameworks. Methods Network analysis was conducted using data from 1,052 Chinese adults who completed the Quantum-8-Personality Scale (Q8PS) and Big Five Inventory-2 (BFI-2). Results The largest cross-framework connections involved Q8P Contradiction and BFP neuroticism, Q8P Extraversion and BFP extraversion, and Q8P Yanggang and BFP conscientiousness. These associations were small to moderate in magnitude. Conclusion The findings identify preliminary areas of correspondence between the Q8P and BFP dimensions but do not establish equivalence, convergent validity, or incremental validity of the Q8PS. The results should be interpreted as exploratory because the factorial validity of the Q8PS remains provisional.
Background The current research assesses whether students can achieve better academic performance through the proposed collaborative learning management system (C-LMS) developed as the primary virtual collaborative learning environment. It is intended to examine the relationship between students’ personality traits and their technological, pedagogical, and content knowledge (TPACK) proficiency and to determine their continued use of technology. Methods The current research initiated an investigation of the issue from psychological perspectives, using students’ Big Five Personality Traits (BFPT) as predictors and extending the study by grounding it in the TPACK framework. It aimed to explain the relationship between BFPT and TPACK among students regarding their continued use of technology. The research experiment was conducted using the developed proposed C-LMS integrated into the virtual collaborative learning environment. Participants completed the provided pre-module knowledge-checking test after completing the BFPT questionnaire. Then, they needed to complete a post-module knowledge-checking test, a TPACK questionnaire, and course feedback. Their course feedback indicates their intention to continue using technology. Results Based on the findings, the students’ BFPT had a significant effect on their TPACK and continued use of technology, except for extraversion, neuroticism and TCK towards TPACK. Using PLSpredict, the proposed model demonstrated substantial predictive power over the LM model, consistently achieving lower RMSE and MAE across most indicators. Engagement within the C-LMS was positively associated with students’ academic performance, suggesting that collaborative features align with higher academic outcomes Conclusions The current research demonstrated the proposed structural model, adopting the Big Five Personality Traits (BFPT) and the TPACK framework, and integrating the proposed C-LMS to improve students’ collaborativeness through a dedicated online course. Moreover, students’ understanding of the enrolled online course improves significantly when the proposed C-LMS is integrated as the primary virtual collaborative learning environment. The phenomenon explained the positive impact of the proposed C-LMS on students’ academic performance in collaboration and knowledge co-creation.
