The educational inclusion of students with Down syndrome requires support systems capable of addressing diversity without replacing the student's own participation or shifting the pedagogical responsibility away from the classroom teacher. This study aimed to interpret the experiences of shadow teachers in providing inclusive educational support to students with Down syndrome in General Basic Education, within the framework of the university outreach project "El nuevo desafío de la inclusión universitaria: estrategias de refuerzo académico para jóvenes con diversidad funcional (discapacidad)". The research employed a qualitative approach, grounded in an interpretive paradigm and a hermeneutic-phenomenological design. Three shadow teachers (MSA1, MSW2, and MSB3) participated, selected through purposive, criterion-based non-probability sampling. Data were collected through individual, asynchronous semi-structured interviews via WhatsApp and analyzed using initial and analytical coding, alongside interpretive memos. Thematic sufficiency was assessed across the entire dataset. The participants' experiences were then compared and triangulated with the theoretical framework. The analysis yielded eight thematic axes: the value of the experience; the reality of educational inclusion; methodology and strategies; the role of the shadow teacher; challenges in providing support; support and collaboration networks; vocation and motivation; and proposals for improvement. The experiences analyzed suggest that this support functions as a mediating pedagogical practice that fosters student autonomy, the adaptation of strategies, and collaboration between families and teachers, though challenges persist regarding resources, teacher training, school pacing, and time constraints.
Family co-responsibility links family involvement with students' socioemotional needs and with the actions carried out by the school. This study aimed to understand, from the perspective of education professionals, family co-responsibility for the socioemotional support of basic education students in public schools. A qualitative study with a descriptive design and an interpretive orientation was conducted. Data were collected through an asynchronous, self-administered open-ended questionnaire completed by three professionals with different profiles and were examined through qualitative content analysis and source triangulation. The results show heterogeneous family involvement and support practices that combine educational monitoring with emotional support. Participants distinguished between having communication channels available and sustaining ongoing coordination with families. The barriers identified were mainly located in family and socioeconomic conditions, and no barriers were explicitly attributed to the school. Family-school collaboration was recognized as relevant to addressing socioemotional needs. Based on the professionals' perceptions, the study concludes that family support integrates educational and socioemotional dimensions and gains meaning through its connection with the school, within a co-responsibility in which both settings play distinct and complementary roles.
Insecurity has become a significant threat to the effective delivery of basic education in Nigeria, particularly in communities affected by banditry, kidnapping, armed attacks, and communal violence. This study examined the influence of insecurity on teaching-learning outcomes in Universal Basic Education primary schools in Kagarko Local Government Area, Kaduna State, Nigeria. Specifically, it investigated the effects of insecurity on pupils’ academic performance and school attendance and identified strategies for reducing its adverse effects. The study adopted a qualitative documentary research design and relied on secondary data obtained from government publications, policy documents, institutional reports, international organisations, and peer-reviewed journal articles. The selected documents were analysed using qualitative content analysis and organised according to the study’s major themes. The findings revealed that insecurity negatively affects pupils’ academic performance by reducing instructional time, disrupting curriculum coverage, weakening concentration, and creating fear within the learning environment. It also reduces school attendance as parents may prevent their children from attending school because of kidnapping, attacks, unsafe travel routes, and instability within surrounding communities. Consequently, insecurity undermines the implementation of Universal Basic Education by limiting regular participation and disrupting stable teaching and learning conditions. The study concludes that ensuring school safety is essential for achieving the objectives of free and compulsory basic education. It recommends strengthening school security, implementing the Minimum Standards for Safe Schools, improving community participation, providing psychosocial support, protecting routes to school, establishing emergency response systems, and adopting flexible learning arrangements during periods of disruption.
The article offers a comparative analysis of the concept of pedagogical mastery in Uzbek, Russian and international scholarship and systematises official statistical data on the teaching workforce in Uzbekistan's general secondary education. The study uses a documentary-analytical review, comparative analysis and descriptive statistics; no experimental component was conducted. According to the National Statistics Committee, the number of teachers in general secondary schools grew from 486.6 thousand in 2019/2020 to 577.7 thousand in 2025/2026 (+18.7%), women account for 72.5% of the workforce, and regional differences reach a factor of 4.6. International evidence (Shulman; Hattie; Kunter et al.; Darling-Hammond et al.) indicates that teaching quality depends less on workforce expansion than on the integration of knowledge, practice, personal-value, reflective and digital-methodological components. The author proposes a five-component integrative conceptual model and formulates recommendations for qualitative monitoring of teacher capacity and for the design of professional development
This study determined the administrative strategies employed by school leaders in implementing enhanced digital-based literacy instruction in selected public elementary schools in the City of Naga, Cebu (Region VII), and Calubian, Leyte (Region VIII), during School Year 2025–2026. It examined the respondents’ demographic and professional profiles; the level of implementation of digital-based literacy instruction in terms of curriculum integration, technological infrastructure and resources, and teacher pedagogical competence; the administrative strategies employed in resource allocation and maintenance, capacity building and professional development, and instructional supervision and monitoring; and the issues and concerns encountered. The study employed a quantitative descriptive-correlational and descriptive-comparative research design. The respondents comprised 110 school heads and teachers from six public elementary schools, consisting of six school heads (5.45%) and 104 teachers (94.55%). Data were gathered using a researcher-made structured questionnaire anchored on the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) framework and the Philippine Professional Standards for School Heads (PPSSH). Frequency, percentage, weighted mean, and standard deviation were used for descriptive analysis, while an independent-samples t-test or analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Pearson’s correlation coefficient were proposed for examining differences and relationships. The findings revealed that digital-based literacy instruction was implemented to a great extent (overall weighted mean = 3.45, SD = 0.42), while administrative strategies were employed to a great extent (overall weighted mean = 3.51, SD = 0.39). Instructional supervision and monitoring were revealed to be the most frequently implemented administrative strategy, whereas technological infrastructure and resources were revealed to be the area requiring the greatest improvement. A significant positive relationship was revealed between administrative strategies and the level of implementation (r = 0.62, p < 0.001). Limited internet connectivity, insufficient digital equipment, and the need for continuous teacher training were revealed to be the major implementation concerns. These findings suggest the value of an enhanced digital-based literacy instruction framework emphasizing strategic resource allocation, sustained professional development, reliable technological infrastructure, and consistent instructional supervision.
Education in Yenagoa LGA, Bayelsa State, faces persistent vulnerability to environmental, infrastructural and socio-economic shocks-annual floods, riverine isolation, poor school infrastructure, and weak community ownership-leading to disrupted learning continuity and low retention. The paper contends that resilient education extends beyond the confine of a school-centric model and requires a robust, strengthened learning ecosystem. Through an integrative review of literature and the theoretical synthesis of Bronfenbrenner, Ecological System Theory, Epstein, Overlapping Spheres of Influence, and Resilient Theory, conceptualized as Yenagoa Resilient Learning Ecosystem Model (YRLEM). The model places the learner at the Centre of six interconnected pillars/layers: Immediate Learning Environment/Resilient learner: (1) Community Engagement Pillar, (2) Technology and Digital Access Pillar, (3) Environment and Climate Resilience Pillars (4) Infrastructure and Schools Pillars (5) Governance and Policy Pillars (6) Livelihood and Skills Pillars. It argues that by intentionally engaging indigenous institutions-traditional rulers, CDCs, women and youth groups, and SBMCs-and fostering structured multi-stakeholder collaboration between government, oil and gas companies, tertiary institutions, NGOs, and faith based-organizations, educations can be transformed from a fragile service into a community owned resilient system. The paper contributes a context-specific framework for policymakers, the Bayelsa State Universal Basic Education Board, and development partners, and advances propositions for future empirical validation in the Niger delta context
Justification: Reading comprehension difficulties among basic education students have driven the search for pedagogical strategies such as gamification; however, their effectiveness depends on the specific characteristics of the context in which they are implemented. Ghana's Junior High School (JHS) mathematics curriculum expects teachers to use concrete manipulatives. In the Amansie Central District, Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) mathematics failure rates exceeded 55% each year from 2022 to 2024; this underachievement provides the context, rather than the object, of the present study. Drawing on a curriculum-enactment perspective, this convergent mixed-methods, cross-sectional study examined JHS teachers' reported use of manipulatives, sources of supply, teaching methods, perceived benefits and challenges, and compared reported use with observed classroom practice. Data were collected through a questionnaire completed by 97 mathematics teachers in 56 public schools, semi-structured interviews with 31 participants, and classroom observations of 16 teachers. Across 13 syllabus topics, between 85.6% and 96.9% of teachers reported using manipulatives, yet only 2 of the 16 observed teachers (12.5%) used them during instruction, a marked discrepancy between reported and enacted practice. Although 67.0% reported using activity methods, observed lessons were predominantly lecture- or discussion-based. Improvisation was the main source of manipulatives (78.4%), and 78.4% of teachers reported never receiving manipulatives from the Ministry of Education/Ghana Education Service. One-sample chi-square goodness-of-fit tests showed that responses to every benefit and challenge statement were unevenly distributed across the agree, disagree, and uncertain options (all p < 0.001); most teachers perceived manipulatives as beneficial. The most frequently endorsed challenges were lack of continuing professional development (71.1%), the cost of improvised materials (66.0%), and non-availability (61.9%). The findings point to the need for resourcing, professional development, and supervision that attend to classroom enactment rather than lesson-note compliance.
This review explores the role of science laboratories in strengthening science education within resource‑limited contexts, with particular attention to Timor‑Leste. Drawing on peer‑reviewed studies and policy documents published between 2019 and 2025, the synthesis highlights how laboratory access fosters students’ conceptual understanding and inquiry skills through hands‑on engagement. Yet, many schools continue to depend on low‑cost experiments due to infrastructural constraints, creating a persistent gap between curriculum aspirations and classroom realities. The analysis underscores the importance of expanding laboratory infrastructure, investing in teacher professional development, and adopting context‑appropriate experimental strategies to advance science learning in basic education settings.
The progress of a nation depends heavily on the quality of its human resources, with basic education playing a crucial role as the primary foundation for character development. However, the tide of globalization often triggers moral degradation and traps education in a purely cognitive orientation. In response to these challenges, this study aims to describe the implementation of an integrated teaching module based on the Panca Cinta concept which encompasses love for Allah SWT, the Prophet Muhammad SAW, the homeland, fellow human beings, and the natural environment as an effort to foster character development among students at Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Wali Songo Sumberrejo in Bojonegoro. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data collection was conducted through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, and analyzed using the Miles, Huberman, and Saldana model. The research results show that the implementation of the integrated “Panca Cinta” teaching module was carried out in a structured manner through intracurricular and cocurricular activities in relevant subjects by applying systematic learning stages. The character-building process was carried out through three phases of value internalization, namely transformation, transaction, and transinternalization of values, which were integrated with the Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) approach and daily habit-forming methods. The success of this program was supported by the quality of the materials, teacher competence, student motivation, and synergy between the madrasah and parents.
Despite growing recognition of technology as a catalyst for improving mathematics teaching and learning, its integration in basic school classrooms remains inconsistent, particularly in developing contexts where teachers often face pedagogical and contextual constraints. This study examined basic school teachers’ perceptions of technology incorporation in mathematics instruction, assessed their readiness for technology integration, and explored the challenges influencing its implementation. The study adopted an explanatory sequential mixed-method design involving 150 basic school mathematics teachers selected through stratified random sampling for the quantitative phase and five purposively selected teachers for the qualitative phase. Data were collected using an adapted structured questionnaire and a semi-structured interview guide. Quantitative data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics in SPSS (Version 27), while qualitative data were analysed thematically. The findings revealed that teachers generally held favourable perceptions of technology incorporation in mathematics instruction. However, overall readiness was significantly below the neutral midpoint, whereas willingness to integrate technology was significantly above it; technological competence and confidence were also significantly below the midpoint. The qualitative findings further identified inadequate technological resources, limited professional development, insufficient technical support, workload demands, and pedagogical uncertainties as the major barriers to effective technology integration. The study concludes that although teachers recognise the instructional value of technology and demonstrate a willingness to adopt it, meaningful classroom integration requires strengthening teachers’ technological and pedagogical capacities alongside improved institutional support and infrastructure.

Abstract The study is aimed at enhancing access to quality basic education in kebbi state. Universal Basic Education (UBE) policy in Nigeria aims to provide free and compulsory education to all children aged 5-16. Despite these efforts, approximately 20 million children were out of school in Nigeria in 2022 alone. Recent statistics indicated that Kebbi is among the states with the highest rates, having about 60% of its young population out of school. Kebbi state located in north-western Nigeria has been plaque by emerging security challenges including banditry, insurgency, kidnapping, climate related disaster (flooding) and communal clashes contributing to the high index of the poor thus, having a devastating effect on the educational sector particularly at the basic level. Six research questions and six objectives were formulated to guide the study. One of the objectives of the study was to determine the emerging security threats affecting access to quality basic education in Kebbi State. The target population of the study consist of principals, teachers, students, Parents, out of school children and staff of the zonal Education offices from ten (10) local government areas of Kebbi State. The main instruments for data collection were a questionnaire titled “Enhancing Access to Quality Basic Education Questionnaire”, Face to Face Interview and focus group discussions. The reliability of the instrument was realized using test-retest method. Quantitative data collected was analyzed using descriptive statistics of Mean and standard deviation with the help of SSPS 20.0 version, while the qualitative data was analyzed and presented using thematic areas. One of the findings of the study indicated that the emerging security threats experienced at the basic education level are kidnappings for ransom, Lack of adequate security personnel, natural disasters such as flooding experience during raining season, armed Robbery and banditry in or near the school compounds, poverty, bullying and sexually assault by Kidnappers. This study assesses the rationality of public policies for the spatial allocation of primary schools in the West region of Cameroon, in the context of ongoing crises and economic shocks. Using cross-sectional data of 2022 from the Ministry of Basic Education, the Central Bureau of Censuses and Population Studies., and the National Institute of Statistics, the analysis applies Ripley’s K function to examine whether the spatial distribution of public primary schools follows a clustered, random, or dispersed pattern relative to population distribution. This spatial statistical approach is complemented by Monte Carlo simulations to test the significance of observed patterns. The results show that, while school locations are generally aligned with population concentration, some districts exhibit random spatial allocation. These findings suggest the need for more rational and demand-driven school placement policies, particularly through prioritizing densely populated areas to improve access and educational outcomes.
Foundational literacy and numeracy (FLN) skills are the cornerstone of educational development, yet in Nigeria, the pathways to achieving them at the basic education level are fraught with challenges. This study explored teacher variables in relation to addressing gaps in foundational literacy and numeracy (FLN) among pupils in basic schools in Kano State, Nigeria. The study adopts exploratory sequential mixed-methods research design which combines qualitative and quantitative investigation. The qualitative phase involved interview of 18 FLN teachers which generated themes around the issues of teachers’ qualifications, teachers’ perception of their roles, teachers’ instructional practices, professional training, continuous professional development, and challenges affecting effective FLN instruction. The quantitative phase was a survey which explored the perspectives of 360 basic school teachers in Kano state on the themes generated during the qualitative phase. Findings revealed that some teachers lacked the required educational background for teaching literacy and numeracy, with only 58% having studied English Language or Mathematics in college. The teachers demonstrated strong commitment to supporting struggling learners and expressed positive perceptions of learner-centred approaches. The findings also indicated a gap between teachers’ pedagogical knowledge and their actual classroom practices, particularly in the limited use of interactive instructional methods. The study further revealed that institutional challenges were perceived as major constraints, while opportunities for workshops and seminars that focused on FLN remained inadequate. The study concludes that improving FLN requires more practical initial teacher preparation, sustained professional development, learner-centred pedagogy, and stronger institutional support for teachers.
